Pixie Haircut Tutorial - Meg Ryan

Fun and Easy Meg Ryan Haircut Tutorial

SUBSCRIBE: http://goo.gl/aWSkjE

In this video I demonstrate how to cut a Meg Ryan haircut. This haircut has been one of my favorites for many years and still is. This haircut is great for women's short hairstyles, short messy haircuts and short layered haircuts.

Ryan became a star when she appeared in When Harry Met Sally.... Over the next 15 years, she played leading roles in several romantic-comedy films, including Sleepless in Seattle, French Kiss, Addicted to Love, City of Angels , You've Got Mail, and Kate & Leopold, films which together grossed a total of more than $870 million worldwide. In 1995, Time critic Richard Corliss called her "the current soul of romantic comedy."

This was a special request, and if you have any requests for the Total Request Live segment, please leave them in the comments below or message me directly.

Hey guys Steven is salon guy here and welcome to Total Request hair. I recently got a request for one of my favorite haircuts of all time: meg Ryan, so I'm gon na show you guys to get the meg Ryan inspired. Look, let's get started. The first thing. I'M going to do is going to create the outline or the base which is going to establish the face framing. So what I want to do is - and, as you can see, this is pretty short already, I'm going to establish how short I'm going to cut the fringe and then I'm going to angle that all the way around through the back. Alright I've got the base established. Now, which pretty much is the length that you're going to see into the front and the side, so I want to create the base first, so I know what the length is and the framing is going to be all right. So this here was relatively short as it is, so it wasn't too difficult to start, but once I have the base all the way through the back, oh, I did again hold it straight down and face frame all the way around both sides. Alright and now what I'm going to do is start the layering process. Here'S what I want to start the layering process. First thing I want to do is take a section horizontal section straight across right in the the top back of the head right here, and I'm going to cut it straight across this right. Here is going to be my guide throughout the top and throughout the back. Here now, what I'm going to do is I want to take sections I'm going to follow the head shape around to kind of just keep, keep it nice and consistent and also follow the pattern of the layering. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to create this pattern throughout the whole back of the head and then we'll come back and then we'll cross like everything, now that the whole back is pretty much layered here. What I want to do is I want to not only cross-check, but I want to pull everything out horizontally and chip into it, but also, at the same time, I'm cross-checking and what this is doing. It'S given me good balance, but it's also creating a nice texture into the sides here and just keeping everything pretty much on the same length as those you can pretty much killing two birds in one stone: cross-checking as well as doing the cutting. So I'm just going to continue this all the way throughout the back of the head and I'm going to continue all the way up here, pulling everything out horizontally and chipping in to it. Now you might you know if you're cutting a lot more. That means some parts are a little unbalanced and need to be cross-checked. All right now remember you're, having cut into the sides here the corners, so this is going to be a lot longer and heavier. So don't worry about that. We'Re focusing just payment from behind here. The ear and out so just continue this all the way throughout the back of the head until you reach the top up here. As you all know, I like to connect the back here with the top cutting towards the face. So what I'm going to do is just the first section which is here connecting these two I'm going to cut towards the face. This way that I'm blending and I'm preventing any sort of harsh lines instead of bringing up and cutting it straight across horizontally. Because that could cause harsh lines in the hair so continue this throughout the top half of the head here until you get to the parietal Ridge here, which is the corners and then we're going to change the pattern and cut everything horizontally again, we haven't gotten to The sides yet, but what we are doing is we're blending this into the top here great now, it's time for the very very top. So what we're going to do is pick up where we left off and now we're going to cut everything straight across or horizontally. I'M going to continue this to the whole top of the head, leaving these corners and leaving the sides pick up your guide. You can see it right underneath and continue all the way to the front now it's time to connect the sides here with the top - and we haven't even touched this yet so here's what we're going to do with the sides, I'm going to actually push this out Of the way I'm going to come to where the corner of the eye is the eyebrow here and push all this hair up forward and get it out of the way, alright just push it out of the way and section it. So you have a section like this: okay, just get this out of the way if you spray it down a little more spray it down. Now, we've got this the length in the back all this back here to connect with this. So now, what do we do? All right, what we do is we find water layers are and make sure that everything is even as far as our base again, you have to reconnect a couple of things now. What we're going to do is by keeping it out of the way going to come in, like so vertically now and connect everything, here's your length, you don't want to get rid of this. Let that drop out and cut everything straight up, you're going to continue this! All the way, through the front again let the length drop out, don't cut that. Then you get holes in the head and repeat this all the way. It'S the very, very front, there's the length, let that drop out you'll, see your guide right underneath and you're. Basically, cutting everything square straight up and the last piece in the front, not much which should come off now. What I want you to do is again section this off and here's what we're going to get that fun flip that PC look so now. We'Ve got the layers in there connected from the back now we're going to chip in to everything horizontally, cross-checking and also keeping the layers balanced, and you do that by holding everything out pulling it out horizontally. This is, this is one of my biggest tricks here and it's worked all the time, pull everything out horizontally and chip into it again: you're not going to have much hair coming off, but this really ensures that balance and also those flips that you get in there. So continue this all the way to the top right in through here now the sides are done, we're simply going to connect this in through this here and you'll, see it right there, that's the corner, we're going to cut that corner you now everything is connected together. Nicely again just make sure you go through everything double-check it so now what I'm going to do is going to continue this on the exact same thing on the other side and they'll come back and check everything for balance all right. Now that the length is done and the layers are done, it's now time for my favorite part, which is the texturizing and again I'm going to do this by hand. You see we do this a million times. You want you to have fun with this. Take the hair chip into it. Just really really have some fun, because this is all about texture. The haircut so just go throughout the whole head. I'M going to come back and use thinning, shear as well, and just really really soften this up. Add some texture and have a lot of fun. We'Re going to now is going to blow-dry it and then finish it off with some paste and then we'll be good to go all right here we have a meg Ryan. Inspired haircut, looks pretty close to you know. She'S had her hair in very different ways, and you can really style this as many ways as you want. I mean I've seen her with this kind of like all the way over this way and this kind of spiked and messy. But you know this is pretty much it. This is her look from from for quite some time. You know the shorter versions of this as longer versions of it, but I think you guys get the general idea well. I had a lot of fun doing this and thank you so much guys I'll see you next time for more tutorials and requests, keep them coming thanks. So much you guys soon.

Lori Weiser: As a hairdresser, I love what you are doing! Using unprocessed hair, like that of a mannequin, allows viewers to see a nice clean cut, lines are visible. Real people, with processing, and split ends are harder for you to show the clean lines, and partings for the cut. I would like to see more styling tips...blow outs, ...Thank you!

Paula Mele: Had my hair exactly like this for a few years Stephen! Love the tutorial and cut!

mamamiablambia: Awesome!  Have loved this cut for years, now I'm going to have my daughter do it!!  YAY!!  Great tutorial!!

Cynthia Jimenez: This is Just one of those timeless cuts and styles, Great Job!!

TheSalonGuy: Thanks so much! The principles remain the same if you are looking to achieve the same or similar look even if it's a longer style. Some of the layering may change a bit in the back however this can be done on longer hair as well.

Gina Loeb-Flanders: Love your work! It would be very helpful if you would use a contrasting backdrop, including your shirt or jacket to the color of the hair you're working on so we can really see all the wonderful techniques you're sharing...Thanks so much!

Rocklyn Hamilton: You're a great teacher! I have cut my 85 years young mom's hair, have for years. Always likes it very short, but now she wants a haircut to cover her hearing aids, and this is it! Thanks so much! It's great!

I was actually able to get the choppy look I always ask for but never seem to get when I go to the salon so thanks!

mymiksang: Just what I needed, profound gratitude ;))

Damnedgirl: Isn’t this the Lisa Rinna hair cut and mannequin? Would you then recommend doing that cut first, then transition into the Meg Ryan cut? I love your videos and advice by the way, you are so talented! Appreciate you sharing.

Kate Redsull: Can I ask, is this he same as the Lisa Rinna cut just a shorter version? Thanks x

Justin W: Looks very late 70's early 80's kind of hairstyle,  layered hair was very popular at that time.  This look is also close to Lisa Rinna's hairstlye,  the rounded layering.

Stephanie Persin: I have short hair and it is very hard to find someone to cut layers and if you have coarse hair the stylist has to use a razor to thin out the hair.

tonia milewski: How long is the top layer?

Antia Ruiz: Si igualito que el de Meg Ryan

Londoner Nugget: What hair comb you are using in this video? Looks like the long sized Kobe one ?

aircoolbill: Where can I get a appointment with you. I am a older woman but I love this cut

Ginger Jurjevich: USING BLACK BACKGROUND ON DARK HAIR MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT TO SEE WHAT THE HECK YOU ARE DOING AND TO SEE FINISHED STYLE.

方歡: 好棒.謝謝您

sislau: What would have made this video better would have been either a lighter haired mannequin, or a lighter background. Just saying, the lack of contrast made details harder to see.

Louise Fält: This is the haircut I want

b l u e p i n k t e a a r t s t u d i o: It’s nice.. but what makes that Meg Ryan hair cut so special is the color blond (for me)

Claudia Armendariz: Hola, me gusta mucho el tipo de corte que trae esta artista pero no se que tanto me favorezca, me podria aconsejar.??  Gracias anticipadamente.

dave ritz: Can u Pls show Robert Pattinson signature haircut

Aneta Rutkowska: Its grate

perth45: not sure this resembles the picture.....and on straight hair it needs to be deep point cut to encourage movement...club cutting eliminates movement and renders the hair more helmet like....

SaRa Claws: Are you over directing when connecting the front side to the top layers? 6:12

Lolii Gimenez: EL FONDO ES OSCURO EL CABELLO A CORTAR OSCURO SU JERSEY OSCURO Y LOS DETALLES DE EL CORTE TAN APENAS SE APRECIAN ..HAUN A PESAR DE ESAS COSAS. GRACIAS POR CONPARTIRLO .

Jessica Costi: Need better camera angles for the side. Was tricky to see how the sides where done.

Em *: You're teaching is super confusing you are amazing stylist but I wish I understand better what you are doing

Lolii Gimenez: PORQUE NO PONEIS MAS LUZ SE VE MUY OSCURO:(
