Growing Out My Pixie Cut: How To Dutch Braid Short, Awkward, Mullet Hair

♥ In today's video, I show you how I Dutch braid my short pixie/mullet hair that I've got going on. The plan right now is to let my hair grow longer so it is looking a bit awkward in this particular phase. The neck hair is awkward, the front is awkward... it's just really nice to get it all out of the way by braiding it. As always it doesn't turn out great on camera hehe, but with some practice, you will be able to do this as well in a way that suits your hair!

Hey guys welcome to a new video here on my channel. This has been a super requested video for the past few days because I posted this photo on my Instagram the other day and people were like do a tutorial. How do you braid your short hair and I'm like? Okay, that's what I'm gon na do these braids that I created today in today's video are not exactly like the ones in the picture, because the one in the picture they followed. My like my ear more and went down behind my ear, and these are more on top of my head, but it's exactly the same thing. You just steer it in a different direction when you do it, so I hope you guys are going to enjoy this tutorial and hopefully you'll get some hair inspiration for your pixie cut. So the first thing we want to do is basically prep the hair so that it's the way we want it before we start working with it, and this can be different for different people. It'S totally up to you how you want to prep some people use like wax on their fingers when they start braiding. For some reason, I go the other route and I use dry shampoo partially because I don't want it to be like or look kind of greasy. I guess I think, I'm on day three now they two or three since I washed my hair and another reason why I use dry shampoo is because it kind of deals a little bit with my dark roots. Let'S see it makes it a little bit more like a she looking, something that I totally get is a negative or econ if you have dark hair. But for me this just gives my hair a tiny bit of like bleach on the roots without it being permanent and then I'm gon na go ahead and brush through my hair, because it's really annoying when you start cuz. It'S really annoying when you start braiding and you can't like separate out the hairs. It'S tough on your fingers as it is to braid, especially this short hair. It gives like really crampy in your hands, so you don't want to add extra extra difficulty to it by not brushing your hair before I'll. Have my mirror right here and another con of the dry shampoo is that it kind of this is extra volume dry, shampoo. So it like kind of gives the hair a texture that makes it more difficult to separate, but in my opinion, it's worth it for the like for evening out the look of my hair. The other things I will be using today are probably some bobby pins. I just got new ones, I'm also using these hair ties. I found blonde ones. I do know that there are these clear hair ties, these really small ones, but I find that some of them have like no elasticity in them whatsoever, and I just it just annoys me so I sometimes I use black ones and then they're super visible in my Hair I found these like beigey blonde ones and I was like oh get those and see how it goes and some hairspray, because once we put all this effort into braiding our hair, we want it to stay. We don't want it to fall apart. So that's all! I'M using and step two, I guess, is to divide the hair down the middle or wherever you want party, of course, but for this look I'm doing it in the middle. If you've ever seen me do any kind of hair tutorial before you know that I'm not super picky, I'm not a perfectionist. I just want to get it done. So I would say: that's pretty much down the middle. Wouldn'T you! I look like one of Sweden's. First kings: here's a comparison I feel like this chair, I'm sitting on, is extremely squeaky today, but work and now usually, I have to kind of choose between two looks like normally. When I have long hair, I would braid the braids down the middle. It'S following the parting down the back now, since my long hair, this hair is way longer than my short hair, and I do want my short hair to be a part of the braid. I can't really braid it too high. Let'S see if I can kind of measure I mean this hair does reach up here. Does it reach all the way around like here? You can tell like I'm going to have to do it a little bit towards the ear. I don't know how far back I'm going to make it today before my hands cramp, but I definitely want all of these hairs to be a part of the braid. So I need to make sure it kind of follows a distance from this short hair so that it sticks start with a really like it depends. I have noticed that I prefer, when the braid starts really really small and then grows. So that's why I start with a super super small section in the front and split it two to three. I will be doing Dutch braids today and not French braids, because I prefer the like when they are on top of my head. Instead of integrated into my head and the big difference, if you're not familiar with Dutch versus French braids, is the French braids you braid? On top all the time the outer section, on top the outer section on top Dutch braids, go outer section under outer section under to kind of braid, so that the braid comes upward. So, let's get started. I hope you guys can see kind of what I'm doing. At least I've been going back and forth. I know that I've been me. Thank you. I know I should, but I don't wan na fall. I know if you all have to flirt. Oh, whenever goblak home, you always be around gosh, I've been going back and forth and all that I've been you with questions, and now I should for so. This is the first side, not the best braid I've ever made because well, I think I did it too high up this hair, obviously is not long enough to reach all the way up here. Just yet so I'm just going to have to tuck that behind my ear last time I did this a few days ago, I followed, like I, followed down behind my ear instead and that worked a little bit better, but then again it doesn't matter the point like The reason I do this hairstyle is to just like get my hair tied up, then this be able to leave it on there for like two or three days and I'd sleep with them, and it's just nice to not have to worry about my hair. For a few days, so it's really nice and what's also great about doing a hairstyle like this, often which I do like. If I find a hairstyle that works for me, I do it all the time and then one day I don't do it. I'M like wow. My hair has grown so fast because I don't notice it growing when I keep doing the same hairstyle so now the difficult part is trying to do the same thing on the other side, and also my back is always going to be like chaos. It'S always going to be a kind of mullet ish, so don't expect my neck to look good now. I just hide this part up here and it's not really sentence in the center. So when I do this braid down, there's going to be hair in the middle that doesn't get to be put in either braid and that's fine. I just leave it sometimes. I will do a little ponytail in the back as well. Whatever whatever works in the moment, I will do it so now. Let'S do the other side try to make it look the same. No, it looks like I have like dandruff and stuff, but it's just a dry shampoo. I promise you always be Cartwright, you go up when knuckle down and you say clear now go bad when I fall hard. You'Ve done me around. I know how you always be. I would say this is as good as I can do it on camera. You guys know that it always turns out crappy on camera and less crappy when I do it off camera. So I am perfectly like satisfied with what this looks like, even though it's not like a super impressive and perfect hairdo. It does what it's supposed to do and I think it it looks decent, so something I could do now if I wanted to, was basically to pin this hair up with the hair like these bobby pins. So I could pin it up upwards just for it to look more like it's supposed to look. That'S one alternative and one alternative is just putting it behind my ears and letting it be this back hair. I know it probably looks terrible from the back, but this doesn't look very nice, but I mean this is a I'm growing out my pixie cut hairdo. After all, so we have to be a little bit forgiving when there's hairs in places. We don't want them. I could always try to pin these parts upward a little bit more. I mean we have stuff falling down here already, and what I'm going to do is spray my hair a little bit first, so that everything grips on a little bit better. You always be around. I kind of like youtuber youtuber symptom symptom of being a youtuber is that I, like, even in my like regular life, I only care about what my hair looks like from the front, because what I do YouTube. Nobody sees me from the back, so I'm always just like. Does it look okay from the front that I'm happy if it looks weird from the sides or the back doesn't really matter? The problem here is that that these parts of my hair are so like I've bleached that they stand out so much up here that it just looks weird if I were to like pin them up, so maybe I can pin them back and down instead, something like That my point with this video is not like it's not a super flashy and advanced an amazing hairstyle, where I'm like. Now I'm going to teach you guys something new and cool, but a lot of you when I have my hair like this, you guys want to see how I do it and my point with this. Video is just showing you guys that it's difficult for me to I'm struggling when I'm doing it. I have practiced a lot. My fingers know what motions to do as I braid and how to grab on to new hair. That'S just something. I'Ve learned by doing like four years ago I had never like done a Dutch braid or a French braid in my entire life I started practicing. I started getting the hang of it and now I'm just applying it to my short hair. It'S not easy. It'S super! Frustrating and difficult, then things fall out and it's like super crampy and you're holding on to dear life, but it can be done obviously, and it's super comfortable to have my hair like to me it's comfortable to have my hair braided like this, and I can't wait For my hair to grow a little bit longer again so that I can start braiding, that's the thing: I've missed the most after shave, my head, its de braiding, so I'm happy to be back doing it. I hope you guys have enjoyed this video and, if you did give it a thumb up subscribe, if you haven't already and I'll see you in the next video goodbye

Katrin Berndt: ♥ Thinking about shaving your head? Watch this video: https://youtu.be/HSjqwSqQ6Nw

Diyana N: I swear, every type of hairstyle suits you so much. How is this possible? <3

vickytime: These braids turned out super cute. I can never get my fingers to cooperate when I try to do my own hair. Your brows also look great today

O_M525treble: I actually commented on your Instagram awhile ago talking about how I wanted to shave my head too. And you were very encouraging! I have not done that yet and in fact my hair is really long now. But it makes me want to try it even more seeing how well you dealt with the awkward phases of growing it out!

暗いザンダリコ: I m so happy watching you making a braid tutorial, I first got into hair with your casual tutorials like 4 years ago and it's one of my passions ^^ since then I adored your tattoo content and actually got one this year :) When you shaved your hair I was so proud that you experimented with it and were so liberated! Watching you now doing a braid out tutorial is like looking back at the good influence you had in my life (you're so inspirational!) as well as both of our hair journeys ^.^

Aaron Gardenia: This is a really weird question, I'm sure, but I am genuinely curious. When you read a book, do you prefer to read it in Swedish or English? Can you comfortably read both languages? When you think, do you first think of it in one language and then translate it over into the second language?

Abbie Hartley: Thanks for the tips! I'm growing out my pixie as well, and my length is just a little shorter than yours. Definitely at the weird mullet phase. Thankfully, it's a stage, and we have Bobby pins and hairspray!

Sam Lyden: I'm excited to try this out! Growing my hair out and didn't even think braiding my hair was an option yet, fab tutorial!

Faith Clarke: As someone who is growing out their pixie cut (11 months into growing it out) this was so helpful!

Meghan: I feel inspired to grow out my buzzed pixie that I’ve had for the last seven years. One of the things I miss about having long hair is braiding. It seems unlikely that I will grow out my hair though, because summers in Japan are awful. The torture will begin around the end of May.

Miranda: I’m growing out my short hair and it’s a nightmare. Lots of hair ties and bobby pins. Now that it’s a bit more even, but still short, it’s a little easier. This will really help, thanks!!!

Tracy Mack: Thank you so much for this tutorial. I had hair well beyond my waist in length and I cut it 6 months ago to above my ears. I used to always braid it. Now that my hair is growing out again i have been trying to figure out how to braid the longer and shorter pieces together. This video helped alot. I measured the shortest pieces like you said in order to know where to start the braid. Thank you.

BloodRaynez: Omg, This is a life saver! Been looking for a way to get hair out of my face and have considered re-shaving it a hundred times, now i dont have too! Thank you thank you thank you <3 (Btw älskar kanalen, så sjukt enkelt att tappa bort tiden när man tittar)

TheHeroSaver: I've never been good at braiding and my hair never sits right in standard braids, this is inspiring me haha

MrsPokits TheRiot: Your quick description of the difference between a French braid and Dutch braid is probably the most concise I've heard. Im gonna steal that. I taught myself how to french and Dutch braid when I was like six. My mom has fine, thin, straight hair and I have thick af and curly hair. Moms hair also leaned oily and mine is dry. She didnt know how to do anything with my hair. So I taught myself how to do "protective styles" while having no idea that was a thing. My sister is 6yrs older than me and she still can barely manage a normal braid. When I was living on the same property as them I was awoken many morning at 7am because my niece wanted me to do her hair. My sister would frequently have me to her hair. I however didn't realize there was a difference in the two braids. Id do one on myself (I think french but I could be backwards) and would do the other when doing someone else's hair. Took me a long time to figure it out. Weirdly enough I find myself in my moms shoes. My daughter has fine, thin hair, and ive caused breakage in her hair which makes me feel horrible and im struggling to learn how to deal with her hair type

Amanda Akerman: My hair is in almost exactly the same stage of growing out! I've been doing this and pig tails and pony tail with 1,000 bobby pins. That's all I got. I haven't done the Dutch braiding though. I have to try that ❤️

carnalucious: Thank you so much!!!! I will need this soon with all the salons all closed. Stay well! ❤

Samuel Godwin: Hair style no hair style, hair or totally shave down you still looks pretty and cute, you are perfectly created

Tussinussi: it's fascinating how the colors on your chest piece is matching your eye color perfectly. You have great humor. And you're really good at braiding. I think braiding is a good alternative to all the crazy things people do to their hair these days, which they might regret in a few weeks.

Rachel Bauman: I JUST got passed the mullet look after growing out my undercut! I feel the hair troubles haha

Amelia: Dude, I am sporting a nice mullet from shaving my head too. Looks like we are about at the same length! I'll definitely give it a go. :)

Alice Mortimer: Legit needed this hair tutorial! ❤ My hair is in such an awkward ugly stage atm

Hayley Alena: I shaved my head a few days ago! Lockdown life. I’ve been stalking your Instagram to see how you styled it growing it out

M: You look good in anything and everything, you’ve had so many different hairstyles and all of them have suited you so well. I’m jealous.

BeaBea 1776: My sister is planning to shave her head at some point and this seems like a good video to have just in case honestly, I don’t get the negative connotation with shaving your head and then having to grow it out. There are plenty of styles, if not the save all- a hat- that can help with growing your hair. People place too much on their outward appearance to others and not living their own experiences

Wioletta Żuchowicz: Cant wait till my hair is this long. Yes, I think your hair is long, because I buzzed mine for the last time 2 weeks ago using 12mm guard and today I hit 2cm lenght Fingers crossed I dont buzz it again during this lockdown, but Im super focused on growing it out so I will even be ok with a mullet stage

Lauren Aked: I'm growing out a mullet & it's long enough now to do 2 braids. I used to part my hair in 3 sections & do one braid at the top and one on each side or do 4 sections with 2 braids on each side. Doing more smaller braids made it easier to get all of the short pieces on top tucked in

Lorainne: Why didn't I watch this when my hair was growing 2 years ago? I really went through 2018 looking like and old broom

Rabb: Ah funny, I started letting my hair grow out from a short hair cut at the same time. :D Especially the short hair on the sides is such a pain to me atm ;___;

Mossycryptid: I love when you do these videos, im about the same place with hair length and love looking your videos when i don't know what to do with my hair!

S B: I literally shaved my sides and back a few days ago after trying to grow out my hair drove me crazy. I couldn't tie it up and the mullet look was driving me crazy.

Bmg501: I love the braided look on you. It's so beautiful.

Luna5094: Braids look so great on you, I am a braid obsessed person and I braid my hair in every way possible. Can you do a tutorial on how you style your bangs sideways?

Sandrilyona Doe: Still looks complicated))) I grew out my pixie with bangs in about a year. Bangs were a nightmare to grow out, I basically toughed it out until I finally could put them in a half up-half down Ned Stark style XD Rocking the long bob now. I hope I never get into bangs again)))

Lina Leo: I could watch every braid your own hair tutorial in the world and would still fail. I have used the volumize Batiste dry shampoo on my brown hair and the white cast goes away as soon as I work it in with my fingertips. Glad it's working for you! I have no desire to grow out my pixie. I have the kind of pixie where the longer hairs are on the top of my head and the back and sides are super short. Luckily I am with my parents during this stay at home order and my dad has a number 3 guard and he shaves my head. So cute.

Aimee Cooper: I recently grew out my horribly damaged hair and I basically did this too for 4/5 months aha! one tip I have is to trim the nape section as often as possible until it is all the same length/ growing it out at the same length is much easier! x

Robyn May: Ya know the description of “awkward mullet hair” I have never related to more.

Kiri Rodway: jealous of everyone who can braid their own hair! Went through college doing hairdressing so I just end up doing everyone else’s

Mareike M: Maybe if you do four braids you will be able to integrate all of your hair already now! :)

pale_emo_princess: I'm growing out a pixie too so i have similar hair to you- except my top hair is longer than yours but my underneath hair is shorter than yours soo I wonder if it'll work on my head haha I'll have to try it out !

Alicia lynn: 2021Your natural hair (roots) is such a unique colour

Claralee Fung: Don't worry about your roots, the entire world has roots now. Also grown out nails

Lulu LD16: I can't wait that my hair grow a little more so I can breed them too !!

Rainy Midnight: Love your videos! New subscriber

Yas Cabôt: I also dutch braid my hair and leave it in for days. Perfect hairstyle for lockdown.

Crocks Yo: A good idéa for the little hairbands! If you want really good ones, you should buy some that are made for horsehair! They are very elastic, and hard to break!

Teresa Moritz: Well, I was kinda in the mood for buzzing my hair off, because I have a weirdly outgrown pixie cut now, that I can't get trimmed due to the virus situation... But now I might wait a bit for it to grow even longer, so I can braid it

Alexa Me: I Don't have short hair and i know how to do Dutch braids but i'm still watching

MinaArnon89: Tipp: Spray the dry-shampoo on your hair-brush und brush your hair with it. No white spots, same hair-feeling

Joshua Michael Cook: looks good!! your hair looks super dope in that white/bleach colour!!

MrsPokits TheRiot: When growing out short hair I found it better to do 3 or 4 braids instead of two.

dirty dan: my sides are shorter than the rest of my hair (used to shave em, growing them out to do a wolf cut) and im hoping i can achieve this

Tracy Woods: Whoa love this look!!

bcbro: You look good with any hairstyle

Maria Alice Camargo: You're such an inspiration... I love your videos . kisses from Brazil.

Brianna Watkins: I swear that dry shampoo trick was genius

Mr a: I actually really like the look of the grown out roots

Kristina von Brömsen: Älskar inbakade och utbakade flätor

Alan Katz: You have a face that can rock any style you want so enjoy having different styles.

Selah Telfer: “I look like one of Sweden’s first kings”

Merrycrisis: If you have braces with those rubber bands you can ask your dentist for an extra bag of them (i got mine for free when i had braces in case they broke off) and now I have like 1000 of them and they’re great for tying small braids and pigtails!

Adie E Liz: I twist my baby hairs against the scalp, and then pin it back behind my ear!

Isabell Vajda: I have really long hair but I can't manage to do a dutch braid to save my life. My brain refuses the movement. :'(

Olivia Englund: Du passar jättefint i din naturliga hårfärg, kanske fundera på att spara ut det? Jag har exakt samma längd på håret med en lång mullet där bak så det ska bli underbart att klippa av den nästa månad till en page! ‍♀️

Debra Morgan: My hair is now exactly the same lenght this is the only style that can save my days... otherwise it’s horrifying i can’t stand. i was wondering how long will it take for my hair to become bob agin

Karolina: It looks super difficul to me, I can't braid to save my life ‍♀️

Vegan Squared: I feel like this haircut is actually goals is the back is trimmed tbh lol!

Ducklingscap: Braiding starts at 5:45

BoredDreamland: I love your mullet like hair! I probably will grow them into a mullet xD

Carlos Martínez: Could you please make a tutorial to get such beautiful eyes? They look unreal!!

Sydney: My forearms are crying from me trying this on my 11 months of growth from a shave

Diana Silva: Always beautiful

Rose G: gotta perfect this b4 beach vacation!

SilvaManVids: It looks good on you

Deborah Clarke: Growing my hair currently from a buzz cut.

JusDoin-Meh: Your are a genius! Can you help with hair thinning?? I use Nioxon Shampoo and Conditioner. I take biotin a good multivitamin, Vivascal and MSM. I get ingrown hairs in my head, causing it to swell and split open down the middle. I then care for it with Coconut oil until it heals. Thanking You In Advance, I won't have much more if it keeps coming out. I have had a major weightloss of 40lbs without trying. I am completely finished with Menopause. Thought I'd mention that iť seems to affect everything! Stacy

Raul Hernandez: Hey, just wanted to write that I miss you and your youtube videos. Hope you are doing fine for yourself and I hope to see you soon, bye-bye.

Sisi Black: I wish I had more Scandinavian friends

Indalecio Gómez: 6 minutes of talking till you finally show how to braid... thanks for that part

Anita Shah: Please upload videos in both swedish and english language subtitle together

Lujain Al-Farhan: Video starts at 5:57

Julz Alta: There are dry shampoos for dark hair. I have like a level 2 almost black hair and it works for me when I'm doing braids so.

Shieldmaiden Sway: I have to get my friend to braid mine. I have shaved back and sides and long top that I can have as a parted Bob, but usually have pulled to one side of a side shave. But I always get so many compliments when it's braided like that. I just wish I could do it myself. I'm going to have to try now!

Nicole Cedervall: See I can do this for sure but my hair is dark and I can't see the different strands. Lol.

Freddie: my hair is sooo slippery and I feel like on the 2nd day of washing it's always too greasy ugh and my hands cramp SO QUICK when braiding my own hair :(

A DSP: Oh the things you do before you have kids. Now I watch others braid hair on highspeed while doing 29 other things

Aldred spacepusher: Is your hair colour naturally grey like your roots here? It's nice, it just you look young.

sari taylor: Love ya work hun

lili edser: Really random but I think you’d really suit wearing like a cute bandana or headband, and pull two front strands of your hair to the front end leave the rest in the hair style

LaFlora166: This is me now and I am not able to do any kind of braid, I suck!

Dovie: You. Are. Stunnnnnning. Inside and out.

Ana Sofia Martins: Thank you!

Nabranes TwistyPuzzler: You have an undercut and not a mullet in this video because your hair is shorter at the bottom, and if you want it to be shorter in the back so that it falls more bluntly and down to the same place with the bottom way shorter instead of it being the same length, just cut the bottom shorter, and although this was quarantine, you could’ve just used a double mirror or asked someone else to just trim a straight line at the bottom.

Katja: Oh wow you sleep with your braids? I love doing Dutch braids but when I sleep with them they look so horrible the next day that I have to redo them. Maybe I should just try using some hairspray because I never thought of doing that oops

D Just: I legit just chopped off my mullet n it looks so bad cuz I needed to even or my hair OOPS

Matthew Fetherston: Your still amazing

janska: my hair is still shorter than yours but i'll try anyways

Rellen Iro: i feel like she could do a bomb af spider gwen cosplay

debbiestar123: I have short hair and I can never can braid it the bottom of my hair is shorter so I can never fit it in the braid so I have to pin it haha

M S: U r the cutest ✨
