Gardening: Repotting, Care, Pruning Of A Ponytail Palm || Nolina || Elephant Foot

We will take a look at how to repot Ponytail palm which looks very similar to a fountain.

It is also known as Nolina, Elephant foot but the spread of its leaves makes the most popular name "Ponytail Palm".

The large caudex at the bottom of its trunk stores water. Its rough texture makes it look like foot of an elephant, hence it is also known as "Elephant Foot".

In some parts, it is known as Nolina.

A new little plant straight from the nursery can be planted in 8 to 10 inches pot.

Ponytail palm grows very slowly hence repotting is not required very frequently.

While planting, special care must be taken that it sits right in the center of the pot or else its stem can bend.

A correctly planted Ponytail palm will remain beautiful and straight.

My plants are 6 years old and the roots have started to surface up above the soil level...and it needs a repotting now or else its growth will get hampered.

While repotting Ponytail palm, be very careful from its razor sharp leaves which can hurt you.

Pull the root bowl out of the pot.

gently remove the soil using your sickle's butt.

The huge mesh of roots need a pruning. For pruning please use a sharp cutter or scissors.

The soil separated from the roots can be reused, just filter the soil using a seive.

Soil for Ponytail palm has to be very well drained.

The use of fertilizers can harm the plant.

The soil mixture to be used is 50% soil, 30% coarse sand and 20% compost.

The new pot should be bigger than the earlier pot atleast by 3 to 4 inches.

I am going to use a shallow cement pot.

Ensure that there is a drainhole in the pot.

Put the mixture in the pot so that the pot is almost full because the bulbous stem should always be over the soil.

I have top dressed it with pebbles which add to the beauty of the plant and will help soil to retain moisture.

Now its time to make it super beautiful by removing the dry portion of the leaves. For which, use a sharp cutter or scissors to trim the dried out portion of leaves.

If you can plant Nolina (Ponytail palm) straight in the ground, it can grow upto 18 feet tall. A mature plant gets white or cream flowers.

Nolina doesnt require much of care and is usually invincible of insects and diseases.

Theresa: Beautiful, what should I do if I have put too much water? The leaves are about 3-4feet long but they are looking sad, they are not standing so I watered them and they still do not look better. I was thinking of taking it out of the pot and letting it dry out, do you think that may help?

mardel3: I bought this plant from someone that had it potted up in a 20 inch ceramic pot with only one stem, it's a big plant. Since I brought it home I did lift it from the pot to see how root bound it was and I had to add a little soil to it which i kept in the same pot and I also watered it right after. The lower leaves on the stem are browning up and falling the new leaves on top are looking great but the stem is starting to look more bare, is that normal? I dont water it till its bone dry and than I still wait another week before I do it's on my deck with full sunlight, any idea why its losing leaves rapidly?
