Mens Long Hair: Ponytail How-To / Tutorial

A quick tutorial on how to make a ponytail, by request. Also covers a quick "man bun," though lower on the neck than most tutorials.

Everybody, it's Patrick, it is Tuesday morning which means that it's time to do another hair update. Luckily I have an easy one that came from somebody who watches these videos and had a request, so I can do it before I head off to work last night. I showered and wash my hair, which is means that it's in that sort of day one phase where it's a little bit kind of unmanageable, not enough oils have kind of made their way down into the hair. So it's a little bit dry at the ends and whatever so I got a request a couple of times from a couple of viewers who said that they just wanted a quick, a tutorial on how to put your hair up in a ponytail, which it seems like. Second nature, but I guess if you have never grown up your hair before it might be something that you're not used to doing, and you don't really even know how to do so. I figured I would show you that, and that's like I said it's a real, quick and easy one, so I get off the hook really really simply today. So anyway, what you're going to need to put your hair in a ponytail is basically just one of these they're just called hair bands. Hair ties, hair elastics, whatever don't use a regular elastic. I'M sure that you know this already, but regular elastics with no protection on them. They are going to snag your hair as you pull them out, because the elastic itself is kind of porous and it can catches on it can catch on the individual hairs and rip them out. So you want something with a little bit of a protective coating. They come in a million different styles and colors and stuff and million different features. I like to use these when I'm doing a bun. They are they're kind of textured, because my hair is very fine and slippery. It tends to fall out of regular hair bands. If I tie it up in more than just a ponytail, but I'm just showing you a ponytail, don't tend to wear just the ponytail that often just because my hair is so long and it's in layers. I have the front layers which are this length and then the back layers, which, even if I pull it to the front, are a good half inch longer. So when I just do a basic ponytail, you can see that the hair is a little bit wider at the top and then it just sort of trails off. I haven't gotten it cut in almost two years now, so when I got it even off I'll, probably do a regular ponytail, more often plus it's summertime and it's kind of hot to even have that on the back of your neck and pulling it up makes it Cooler so anyway, what you do for ponytail is make sure that your hair is brushed out, which I did just before this. You don't need to watch me brush my hair, and then I usually just take my thumbs and I pull them over. You know like the the temples right here and then pull back all your hair and you don't necessarily need to pull it especially tight. I kind of like it a not so tight because it throughout the day can become annoying. So I pull it smooth. As a Estimates, I can but not like really hard and tight against the back of my head, the more hair you have, the less tight. You have to pull it anyway and then I'm going to turn around. So hopefully you can hear me and you can see. What'S going on so now, you've got your hair just in a bunch in your in your hand, here make sure that the hair tie is already around your wrist here and then you just pull it pull the hair through the tie once twist, the tie pull it Through a second time and then as many times as you need to to tighten it as much as you want for me, it's usually three with a regular hair tie and then you have a basic ponytail, and so that's it like there, like. I said it's super long in certain points and it's also very very uneven for me, so I tend to put it up into a bun after that, and I have a couple tutorials on that. But since I'm already filming, I will show you my hair is finally to the point where I can just kind of roll it into a quick bun at the back back of my neck really quickly. So let me do that so then after you have your ponytail, I take it and you're going to turn it in the direction that you are making the button. So you kind of twist it in this direction in the direction of the hand that I'm making the bun not too tightly. That'S one of the things that I've learned is that it doesn't have to be perfect, so basically roll it around itself. I hope you can see this and then I cover the whole thing with my hand and pull the elastic over twice just making sure that everything's kind of flatten down and then it will kind of unloosen itself just a little bit. And there are hairs that come out of it, it's one of the things that I've learned to actually there's a lot of hair, so that are there but then again and just take the loose hairs and tuck them up. Underneath one of the things that I've learned is that if you try to make the bun at the back of your neck or at the top of your head to perfect um, it's it's, it's just not a work. You could, I suppose I mean, but it's not really the style to have a perfect round little circle at the back of your head. So I just kind of pull it up messily and throw it into the a bonnet the back of my head, and then I'm done. Oh my god, I'm swag, it's very hot here today and I'm wearing flannel because at work it's very cold. You don't need to hear that anyway, so that's my tutorial, hope you liked it. I here every Tuesday talking about long hair on men and giving you my experience and the things that I do for my hair. I will talk to you again later in the week with other subjects or back here next Tuesday, for more hair stuff.

KivonsClipz: Im so glad you made this video. As im getting older is seems like i get more and more self conscious and slowly getting annoyed at how many people get my gender wrong. It wasn't a problem up until now because my hair is also long and i have to put into a pony tail. I already knew how to do this but watching someone else do it and UPLOAD TO TO THE INTERNET d\shows im not alone and i dont have anything to worry about.

Bo M: Great demo! I don't think I've ever seen a textured hair tie before. I haven't tried the bun yet but when or if I do I will remember this tutorial. Wasn't it great when you discovered that you only needed two loops instead of three to tie your hair in a tail? As always, your hair is flawless and it looks fantastic :)

Alex Anderson: Looks sweet ! I'm growing out my hair from an undercut so right now my top hair is like 8 inches but the sides are only maybe 3-4. I'm just going for shoulder length though

Spirit Soul: great tutorial and such beautiful beautiful hair;-) thanks for sharing.

Jonathan Meola: Growing hair and making a ponytail are both so much fun. I cannot wait until my hair is long enough to make it that length.
