What is up family, it's a girl T and the vlogmas chain rolls on today is Saturday, which makes its style day and for this style day rather than doing fashion, I'm doing hair styling, which you already know, because you saw the title of this video. This is all about how I made this very drawstring ponytail that you see on my head my day. Ones know that my go-to protective style is a drawstring ponytail. I love to wear wigs on camera and stuff, but realistically I simply don't wear them all that much in my real life, it's just a practicality, slash convenience thing, it's more convenient for me to just wear my own hair and some sort of bun or protective style, And if my own hair isn't a bun, then I can easily throw a phony puff on top, which is kind of my signature. Look, if you see me in the street, my hair is probably in a puff, except it's not my real hair, because I don't want to be dealing with all the tangles girl. Long story short. I love a drawstring pony. It is a clutch item in my ability to protect my ends, thereby preserving my length and letting my hair grow longer. The issue with drawstring ponytails is there isn't as much variety and choice as you get with wigs, I feel like the wig market is so huge. You can basically find any wig your heart may desire and even if not you can go and get custom units, I've done that, but ain't nobody out there making custom drawstring ponies. You guys may remember. I did a couple of videos last year where I wore a drawstring pony that looked a hell of a lot like this. That one was a cheapy synthetic and I love love loved the look as a synthetic though it has its drawbacks: lots of shedding tangling, etc, and I really thought it might be worth it to me to upgrade that to a human hair version of a dumb long. Kinky straight ponytail, I wanted one in human hair couldn't find it, and I was like you know what maybe it's time I finally take a crack at making my own dress during ponytail, and I will link where I got this hair in the description box. That says: luxury tresses by fab hair, which is pretty much the only place. I seem to get human hair these days because I don't know a whole lot about slaying, hair and bundles and all that so once I tried her hair and recognize the obvious quality. I basically haven't the back. This is two bundles of her kinky straight texture. I purchased 128 inch bundle over the summer realized. It wasn't going to be enough for my dress during pony, but then she had a Black Friday sale and I was able to get a second bundle for $ 40 less than what I paid. In any event, this is two bundles because, as I said earlier, I like my hair, dumb full if I want a realistic density I'll, just wear my own, damn hair, the synthetic pony tail version that I have is 30 inches long, and I will link that as Well, in the description box in case you want to just try out the look, because it is quite an investment to buy human hair, so I always recommend trying to find a synthetic version that is very similar to the look you're going for just to see. If you even like it before you go ahead and drop hundreds of dollars on human hair that you may end up not liking the look it gives you. That being said, let's jump into the demo of how I actually made this drawstring pony, let's run through everything, we're going to need today. First off, you of course need your weave. I have two bundles of kinky straight hair from luxury tresses by fab. This is the hair company from fabulousity. As me, she is a youtuber and she's got a really really great quality hair, at least in my opinion, as a rube who is no expert whatsoever. One of these bundles I bought during her Black Friday sale, the other one. I have bought previously to make this ponytail and then realize it wasn't enough hair for my liking, because I am greedy and like unrealistically thick hair, even when it's just a ponytail. So I have two bundles of the 28 inch kinky straight, which are actually 26 inches. 25 inches or so cuz. I measured it because I bought these bundles at separate times. The textures are slightly different, but I actually think that that's going to be just fine, because it'll give a little bit more of a realistic appearance. I think to my finished product when I have a little bit more of a blending of textures, because my own hair isn't all exactly the same text. I'M going to use at least one and a half bundles, if not both of these bundles. But if you're going shorter and or if you use a curly texture pair, you can probably get away with just one bundle. Instead of two or one and a half, I'm also going to be using some leaf thread in a weave needle. Obviously, I'm also going to be using a regular needle and thread just some black thread trusty a styrofoam mannequin head. These are usually about five bucks at a beauty. Supply store a balled up sock, which is going to basically represent my hair in a bun as I'm building this ponytail a light, colored eyeliner or if you actually have like a proper like fabric marking shelf. You can use that I'm just using an eyeliner elastic for the drawstring. Now this is probably about half an inch thick. This is thicker than what you get in a regular drawstring ponytail that you would buy premade, but this is what I have and I don't feel like going out just to buy elastic. So I'm going to use this for the actual cap of the ponytail. You have some options here. I had sort of a vision, an idea of how I was going to do this in my head and that's more or less what I'm going with. But I did consult YouTube to see if there were any tutorials on how to make a DIY, drawstring ponytail - and there are a few, so I will link those below in the description box most of the ones I watched, used a weave net and basically just cut It to create a cap from scratch more or less, I think, there's an easier way and that is to use a mesh dome cap. This is what it looks like out of the package. This is what most people use when they're, making a wig, it even says, make your own wig on the front of this. This is about four dollars at a beauty, supply store, as you can see, and this is what I'm going to be using. There are also these mesh wig and weave caps out there. I personally wouldn't recommend this because it seems like it would be too flimsy, in my opinion, to actually be durable and long-lasting. I don't want to have to remake my ponytail again in a month, so I'm gon na go with the mesh dome cap. I'M also going to be using some straight pins these here. These are usually used more for a dress making and things like that, but I prefer these two tee pins, because I find that T pins the opening, where the metal kind of curves around in feed to the tee shape. I always get hair strands caught under there and it's very annoying, so I prefer these and, of course, some scissors starting off with my mesh cap. The first thing I'm gon na do is cut off this thick elastic band around the bottom and then the remaining part is going to be the cap of my ponytail. So there we go. We don't need that. Okay. So now we have our wig cap. I think that will be plenty big enough and I have it flipped inside out, as you might be able to see now what I'm gon na do is I'm going to create the portion where the actual elastic is going to go inside I'm gon na fold. This probably about half an inch up so that I have enough room for that elastic to fit, but also making sure that I leave plenty of room in the cap for my hair to go and I'm gon na start pinning. And here we go, we're pinned all the way around and we have the kind of canal through which the elastic will go so now. All I have to do is sew right around the edge of this. To close that up and remember, I do still have the cap inside out right now. This is where I'm gon na be using the regular needle and black thread, because it's just gon na be easier for me to sew without a curved needle hook. Cuz, that's also just more what I'm used to this is also where I want to mark off just where I'm going to actually have the opening, be. This isn't really necessary to do, but I'm doing it anyway. So I'm just gon na take my eyeliner here and make a mark which is gon na, be where I'm actually going to put the hole for the elastic ends to come through one site and straw install the drawstring. But for now I'm just going to be sewing down this edge. I think most of us probably know how to do basic sewing at this point so time for a time lapse. All right. We have created the band of the cap for our drawstring ponytail. Now I'm going to flip the cap back out to the side that will actually be the top, so this is the way it will fit on to my bun. This is the outside. This is the inside. I marked off my little spot where I wanted. The opening for the elastic to be so I'm gon na make it, I think, more toward the bottom rather than up here on the side. So I'm gon na snip right down here toward the very edge of the cap. Then I'm just gon na sew around that opening a bit so it doesn't fray so snip. Now I need a little bit more room than that. There we go so you can hopefully see there's my little opening. That is what the elastic is going to feed through, and I'm just going to stitch that to basically hang it so that it doesn't completely fray and unravel okay. So this is probably going to be impossible to see on camera, especially on my little, not so great quality, vlogging camera, but I've more or less just kind of secured those edges of the opening for the elastic by just sewing them so that you know it'll be A little bit less likely to unravel - or at least it will unravel, not quite so soon. So now I'm going to take the elastic and a safety pin and just put that through the end of it like such as just slid the safety pin into opening there, and that is how I will pull the elastic through. Pull that on through. Don'T need the safety pin anymore and there we go. We'Ve got. We'Ve got a drawstring ponytail cap completed now. As far as the little bungee that usually comes on brushing ponytails, I'm probably not going to have one for this for the time being, because I don't have anything that will fit in elastics this thick, so I'll just have to tuck in pin. But eventually, I probably will switch out this elastic for the normal kind of rope, thin rope, style, elastic and then I'll steal, a bungee off of one of my old drawstring ponytails and use that so our cap is completed for the drawstring Pony, which is great. The next thing I want to do is actually start sewing the hair on, so we don't have a bald drawstring ponytail before I start sewing the tracks on for the ponytail itself, I'm going to sew a track to the inside of the cap so that if the Ponytail moves around or the wind blows. You don't just see the band that way there will be hair coming from underneath to help conceal it. This will probably make more sense after I've done this step, so bear with me. Alright, I've got my mannequin head. Looking pretty crazy right now, as you can see, but what I've done here is I've put the sock in to represent my real hair and I'm just going to sew a track around this portion. I mentioned earlier that the texture of my bundles is not exactly the same. They don't quite match, so I'm going to take the coarser one, the one that's a bit thicker and I'm going to just measure around this edge and figure out how much hair I need there. We go okay, close our little loop here whenever I am at the very beginning of a track. I do so through the weft just to have it really angered and secure for the start, and then, following that I will sew around the web. As I work my way around the cat, whenever you are sewing through a wife to be careful not to stab yourself with your weave needle, because that does hurt I'm going to do that - maybe two more times just to really really anchor this going through the weft. On each time, by the way before I transition to going from I've just finished sewing down that inside traffic and as you can see, I've actually still got some space to cover. I cut the track a bit too short, rather than leave it, because this is still far wider at the base, then my ponytail or bun will ever be. I still just want to close that gap, so I'm gon na cut up a small piece just to cover up this last two and a half inches or so, and one thing I should have mentioned earlier is to make sure you're careful to not sew through your Elastic bands, if you're going to follow this step-by-step, one thing you want to make sure is you're not sewing through the elastic band since that's already in here, if you sew through you're, not gon na be able to move it and pull it freely. So just be wary of that. I'M gon na go ahead and finish sewing down just this last little piece to cover up what I miss measured and then we'll be back for the next step, all righty. We have course-corrected and we have covered the entire inside of the ponytail cap. So let's get these pins out actually, so I can show you guys what I meant when I was saying. I don't want the ponytail caps snitching on me, anytime, the wind blows or the hair just moves a certain way or anything. This is the actual outside of the cap. I flipped it back right side out and just to kind of give you guys a better idea of what I was trying to explain this track is for this is the edge of the cap. So now that we've got this hair on the inside, if we flip it over, it gets concealed. If say, the wind were blowing or whatever. Instead of seeing this edge of the cap, we're seeing hair and then my real hair would be inside here, where my fist is, the last step will be to actually just sew the ponytail hair on to the ponytail cap. We are ready to get busy sewing on the actual ponytail hair. I put the sock back in just to keep things stretched and kind of to accommodate for my hair that will eventually be inside of this cap. I have pinned down the edges and stretch those out as well, so that I can fit the hair on more easily and I'm just gon na again be careful, never so through the actual drawstring elastic, as I'm sewing down this first track at the bottom. I'M gon na start off with, what's left of the more coarse bundle of my kinky straight hair and I'm going to sew in a circular pattern. I hope I don't live to regret this because I have not ever seen any of the drawstring ponytails that I purchased sewn circularly. They sew straight across, but I don't want to cut my wess because that encourages shedding from the West once you cut them and I feel like if I were to fold over, it would probably creating a lot of bulk on the sides, because it's a ponytail. It'S not a wig and folding over the West at the sides is fine on a wig, because you kind of have more wiggle room because it's such a bigger surface, but this is going to be scrunched up smaller than this as a ponytail, and I feel like Going around is probably my best bet, since this is the most straightforward step. I'M just going to be sewing the weft around and around in a circle. I'M not going to show a ton of this because it's just going to be repetitive and boring, and also because I want to be able to play music while I'm working here and I can't have music playing in the background. While I'm talking to you guys or else my video will get a copyright claim sewing through the weft itself, like I did before, just to get things started and anchored really well on this tab, and my plan is to sew round and round keeping things spaced about A finger width apart as I move up and up in this kind of beehive pattern. So in the Westside okay, you guys, as you can see, I've made quite a bit of progress, I'm just about at the very end of that first bundle. One thing I wanted to mention, though, is for the sock, make sure you. I was careful to pick one that was light and color, so it would be easy to see as I was sewing and not sew through it. I actually had meant to put the sock inside of a plastic bag, so it wouldn't even be as likely to catch on my needle as I'm sewing through, but I forgot and the felt pin down now and I'm too lazy to take it off and repin it. So I'm just gon na have to be careful but do not use a black sauce, because then it will be nearly impossible to see if you're sewing to the saw as you're sewing your track down. So I'm going to go ahead and anchor the end of this. First bundle and then move on to bundle, numero, dos and I'll do a little bit more of a time-lapse of situation so that I can unpause my outcast, which I put on hold for you guys have this quick interlude? Okay, you guys another change of plans on the fly you guys are just experiencing this in real time with me, because this weft is rather flexible and thin. I'M actually, rather than sewing it down the way I still the first one I'm going to keep it doubled. So I'm gon na basically have the entire track here fold it in half and keep it like this. I was just measuring to make sure that if I keep it doubled will I be able to keep my spacing about the same and reach the top, and I think I'll be just fine and we'll also take me less time than sewing. All of this as a single weft to do because then I would have to space it closer to jam while this hair in here - and I do want all of his hair on here this time I have paused, my ends are sent back, so I could talk To you guys, but I will go ahead and just anchor this down right, quick, I'm gon na keep the actual the two open ends of the weft here and then the closure at the top will have the folded portion for the folded end. I should say so. Let me just tack this baby down sewing through both of these ends of the weft trying not to stab myself and the finger mostly y'all know that I am no weave or wig expert. I can barely style my hair at all, so you guys are just kind of watching me problem-solve as we go through this cuz. I approach all problems pretty much the same way whether it has to do with my hair or anything else in life. I just try to think logically and use reason and rationality to come up with the best and most efficient solution to achieve my goal. So that's what I'm doing here, Dublin these webs means less sewing and I still get to get all the hair on to this. Ponytail cap, which is what I want cuz, I do want it to be dumbull, okay, we are anchored so now, I'm probably gon na change, my stitching just a bit and go back to. I was actually knotting through each time like that on each stitch, just because I've got to Wes here that I'm trying to hold down rather than just the one. So I want it to be a little bit more secure just so you can see this a bit better. Let me tilt the fourth I've sewn under the cap here, and I just take my needle through and pull, and that just gives me a little bit more security I'll. Do that couple more times for you guys and then we're going time up. So I can put my music back on it's gon na, be time for me to get some new threads soon, because I am running low on this needle. So you guys can watch me struggle so a bit more now timeline style. Alright, we are nearly there she's off the mannequin head. I'Ve taken my hair aka, the sock out of there, and I just need to close it up. I'Ve got just a little bit left here that I need to close up so to make life easier. I went ahead and sewed together this last remaining bit of the weft. Those two halves are now basically joined as one and I'm probably just gon na do my best to roll this up like this stitch that and then stitch it down, and that will be my closure because I'll be able to just fan things out from the middle And not have visible tracks, so let me go ahead and do that next, all right, hopefully you guys can see clearly I basically just sewn up that last bit of weft into this little cinnamon roll here, and that is my closure. So now I just have to tack this down into the opening here that I still have left in the center, and this will be done all right. It is down. So I'm just going to do some knots here on the inside of the cap to make sure everything is nice and secure, and we are done here, you guys can see the closure. This is the very top of the drawstring ponytail, no obvious signs of we vigil s. You really have a trained eye and you're looking for it, and I've got my hand inside the cap. For now, I'm just going to work with this elastic until I can replace it. I just put two knots in the end to keep it from sliding all the way inside the cap. It'S easy enough to work with. I can make the cap smaller by just pulling probably see it just got quite a bit smaller and tighter just fit my entire fist in there. So be big enough for my bun and there you go drawstring, ponytail, DIY style, and there you have it. I am so pleased with the fact that I was actually able to make this thing, because I am I ain't, no chic natural, my ineptitude at wig, construction and general hair slayage, I think, is quite obvious, but I wanted to share this with you guys, because I Feel like, if I can do this, you can, if you wanted to I'm, certainly going to consider making. Perhaps a human hair afro puff version of a drawstring ponytail for myself, because that would allow me to experiment with colors and by colors I mean purple. Y'All know my writer does know: purple is my power color, but for now I'm really really really excited about this. So happy out. As you can see, I can throw it up into a bun for another look, and I love that it's an obnoxiously, huge bun, because that is what I do. I do plan to eventually get like the thinner elastic for it, but for now this is just fine. I haven't put any combs in, as you probably notice, mainly because combs often rip my hair out with wigs. I often even remove them with drawstring ponies. Sometimes I do remove them from the sometimes I don't, and this feels very secure as it is because I do have that extra thick elastic in there cell at the moment. So perhaps once I switch out the elastic, then I'll add combs, but we will see here's a quick little clip of me applying it. As you can see, my hair was just in a ponytail. I had just taken it down from some flat twists and put it up quickly once you seal my ends so that I can do my baggy method and then I go ahead and throw on my new drawstring ponytail and it felt very, very secure as soon as I tightened the elastics and I'm really happy that I use that mesh dome cap because the little openings in the mesh allow me to actually fit the tips of my hair pins through to really secure it down. Because that's what I normally do with my pre-made drawstring pony's that I buy, I really like to go through that cap and really secure it to my head properly. So if you were to get a regular dome cap, you obviously wouldn't be able to do that. So I wouldn't really recommend using a regular dome cap for now, though, I am pleased as punch, and I hope that this was helpful if you were interested in maybe switching up your protective style game and protecting your ends experimenting with the bag method. That you saw me doing where I was applying the wig. Now I've just thrown it up in a messy bun. To give you another look, and I'm I love this. That is it. That is how I made my very own drawstring ponytail, with these hands. I tend to default to protective styles. I don't really wear my hair loose all that much because I can't be bothered with the drama and tangles that comes with it. So I'm really excited about this. I know I'm gon na be wearing a lot, so just get ready to see it in a lot of upcoming videos and I'm also considering doing another protective style challenge, because I'm pretty much always doing a protective style challenge, albeit informally, because that's just the way I Live my life, but if you guys are looking to retain a little bit more length in the new year, maybe you could do like a three month challenge or something might protect. Your ends. Challenge could be resurrected. Let me know what you think: either leave a thumbs up if you're not a commenting, type or leave a comment, if you'd be interested in that and other than that, I will see you guys tomorrow for another vlog. Miss video, except it'll, actually be laughing in person. Cuz, it's gon na be my Sunday stream, so I'm really excited to hang out with you guys live and I will see you there. Bye, bye, nappy-headed. Oh sir
