How To French Braid, Hair4Myprincess

French braiding instructions step by step, and how to hold the strands!

Awhile ago, we put out a "how to do a french braid" for beginners video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1GjaNA... (which basically showed the mechanics of how a french braid is made.) I'm hoping today's tutorial will help to show how to hold the strands while you are french braiding hair.

Keep in mind that there really is no "right or wrong" way to hold the strands in your hands. Whatever works for you to get the job done is just fine. I actually have learned 2 different ways of holding the strands with your fingers that I like to use while french braiding and switch things up often, but I believe the technique shown in this video tutorial is the easiest to learn.

I realize that learning to french braid can be frustrating, and it is going to take some practice. The more you practice, the easier it will become. Soon, you will be braiding in your sleep! ;) When you are first starting out, you might try having someone help you rewind the first part of the video over and over for you as you are braiding, until you get the hand positioning down. I really tried to go slowly and break down each step of the plaiting in this video, and hopefully it will help someone. If you already know how to braid, this tutorial will most likely drive you nuts, lol. I find this a hard thing to teach!

Hey everyone we've been wanting to do this, video for a while, but just haven't gotten around to it, and I'm going to try to do it as slow as I can and explain everything so that hopefully you'll be able to front braid after watching this, I have Started just by putting half of her hair in a ponytail, and that is just so that you can see what I'm doing better just on this side of her head. So to begin, you just want to grab a section at the top of the braid, and then I like to spray a little bit of water just so that we don't have flyaway okay. So to begin, you want to split this section of hair into three. This first part is just like a regular braid, so it really doesn't matter how you're holding the strands or anything like that, but just make sure you're crossing the same strands over as I am so that we start in the same spot with the French braiding. So I'm going to take this strand on the left and I'm crossing it over the middle strand and then I'm going to take the Strand on the right and cross it over the middle. And now, at this point, I'm going to show you how I hold my hands. There really is no right or wrong way, but this is the way that has been easiest for me, so this strand, that is here on the right, I'm going to place it over. My forefinger, so my palm is up, and this is laying down basically across my whole hand, and then I'm going to pinch this strand, that's here in the middle with my pointer finger and my thumb just like that, so I'm still holding this Strad with my hand. I'Ve just taken this finger underneath here and I'm holding that with my thumb. Now, this middle finger is going to catch the strands coming across, so you want to kind of hold this middle finger out and now I'm going to bring this strand. That is on the left over the middle strand and catch it with that middle finger after you do that you can grab a strand here from the top, and just add it right in with that same strand. So, as you can see, is all now coming across over my middle finger as if it was one strand all along so now you're going to have to switch hands and to do that, I'm going to hold the strands the same way. It'S just on the opposite side, so I'm taking my left hand I'm going to grab this entire strand, put it across my four fingers and then I'm going to take my pointer finger and my thumb and pinch that off right there this round, that's in the middle! Now I can put this middle finger out and I'm going to catch it with this strand, so the Strand on the right is coming over the middle into my middle finger and now I'm ready to add in some more hair here from the side. So I'm taking a section from the side on the right and I'm bringing it across my middle finger again: okay, so now we're going to switch hands again, I'm bringing my right hand under the Strand on the right, I'm grabbing the whole section and then I'm taking My pointer finger and my thumb from the right side and I'm catching off the middle strand, I'm holding my middle finger out and I'm bringing the strand from the left over the middle into that middle finger. Now I can grab another strand here from the left and add it in so hopefully this is making sense you're just going to keep repeating this all the way down. Another thing that you may have trouble with is the ends getting tangled up and as you're braiding, you can fix that just kind of get it to a stopping point, and then you can go through with your comb and comb out those ends so that you don't Have tangles, and also if you don't like our pieces, laying when you bring it in, you can always smooth it out before you finish, braiding, it's easier to fix it as you're going than it is to fix it at the end. Also another thing you could do if you're having problems getting things smooth, is to take your comb and bring in the sections with the comb. I actually do that quite a bit. It takes a little bit longer, but the braid does end up looking a little bit nicer in my opinion anyway. So when you get down here to the bottom, where you've added in all of the hair from both sides, you can just finish it off with a regular braid, so that is all there is to it. I hope this helped it's kind of hard to explain. I would suggest maybe playing the first of this video over and over as you're trying to start the braid and hopefully at some point. You will figure it out and then it will just become easy for you.

It's always the edges up front and the base of the neck that end up looking like a wreck. But she does love it when I braid her hair it's a struggle though. Cornrows and the Dutch braid are my favorites. I noticed some people use edge control gel, I need that desperately her hair flies away like crazy.
