How To Crochet A Messy Bun/Polytail Hat For Beginners

Check out this Messy Bun hat - made with an elastic hairband at the very top to keep it nice and snug to your bun! It's perfect when you don't have a huge bun to cover up a whole at the top of the hat. It is easy to either stretch the top as you pull on over your bun or simply pull your hair through the top and make your messy bun once the hat is on.

Sarah Johnson: This was soooo easy to follow. Every other tutorial had me stumped. Thank you!

HoniBear64: I just found your video and thought it was great. I’ve been crocheting for many many yrs and in my opinion this is by far the easiest and best video on making a messy bun hat. (the rubber-band is perfect). I’ve searched for a pattern and stumbled upon yours. happy days.

lynne boulanger: Wow great tutorial and pattern ... thank you for sharing this!

Barb Smith: thank you, thank you ! This was so easy and looks really cute !

laurie Wurster: di used to crochet about 25 years ago, but made a lot of potholders, and having to refresh and relearn a lot of what i knew. This is a simple fun pattern that you made easy to make. i would make it a little longer than 6" next time to cover my ears better, but it looks great, and will impress many! thanks!

Rebecca Cormier: Thank you so much for this video.i was finally able to make this hat.it was so easy!

Eboni: I loved the video. It was very clear and easy to follow. The pattern doesn’t disappoint, but my head was too big. That’s ok, I’ll gift it to someone else ( with a smaller head ). Thanks! Great job.

Callie L. Smith: I can't wait to try this!! Seems super simple!! And I am definitely in need of those markers and the fray glue!! Thanks so much!!

INANNA Shu: Did one right along with you, turned out great, thanks.

Hannah Rose: Awesome I going to give this a try looks so easy

Tina Harding: Thank you for sharing ❤️ the great step by step instructions

Shellie Kinsey McCombs: Thank you. This is easy and awesome. I made one so far.

Colette Green: Hello! I am working on making a messy bun hat for my daughter, using your tutorial. Great job on the instruction. It was very easy to follow. I too did use a bobby pin as a stitch marker. Worked well. Here is my quandary. The circumference of my hat seems to be small and tight. I am at the point of adding another color, so maybe it will seem bigger, once it is longer, but I'm pretty sure it's too small for her head. Is there an easy way to have made this bigger than yours. I don't know do more adding of stitches or something. Its going to be so cute, but not if it doesn't fit. Thanks so much. I look forward to your response. Colette

Sylvia Jones: Love the pattern and video.  Super easy to follow with a beautiful finished project.

Carly Johns: For anyone wondering, this pattern works just fine with a smaller hook and yarn. Best results are following it with a doubke crochet, but if you want to use single, you have to create more increase rounds. It does take some eyeballing and measuring to get the size right doing it with the single, but it is possible

Sasha Hodson: Love this! I tried to make one with the big open hole before and it just seemed like too big of a hole! I grabbed some yarn with the intent of making this today, but I grabbed a 6/Super Bulky yarn instead of a 5/Bulky, what sort of modifications do you think I should make to make sure it's about the same size as yours? Thanks so much in advance x

Aim Mcq: Great tutorial. Thanks so much!

Marisol Cruz: Love it! I did one for my daughter. Winter it's around the corner!! Tell hi to your little boy. He's cute! Thanks for the tutorial!

Dawn Hart: Great video! Easy to follow for beginners. Great instructor!

Tnok Mhamad: Thanks for giving us that information I made that hat and it was so beautiful

WV Cowgirl: You are an awesome teacher! Your video was great!!! So easy to follow and see exactly what your doing.... that’s just absolutely wonderful!!! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!

Nicole Williams: Wow, great directions and super easy to follow. Directions are clear and the video was easy to understand and follow along with. You are definitely my favorite person to watch. Thank you

Michelle Munn: I was looking a messy bun for my daughter and tried a couple and this was the nicest most simple pattern I found with the elastic! And checked ur blog and love the monkey hat!!! Naturally I subscribed. Love the video. Will definitely be sharing this video

Cynthia Dowling: Thank you for showing me how to do this. I wasn’t able to do the double ring of yarn you did in the beginning so I just crocheted around the hairband. It turned out very nice!

Susan Jones: Great tutorial!! I'm new to crocheting and have trouble keeping the yarn tension, especially on foundation chains. Do you have any tips? Thanks so much

Beverley Gavin: Thanks so much, this is my first hat, that I can get my long plait through the top. New to crochet, love to have more patterns

Karie Jo: OMG!! Just attaching the yarn to the rubber bands gave me an anxiety attack!! I was so stressed that I actually made 37 stitches. I'm VERY new to crocheting and looking for some easy videos to practice all the stitches on. After I got over the anxiety attack, I was able to finish the hat and I'm very proud of myself, lol! Not too shabby. I'm subbing and thank you for the great video. Looking forward to more.

DeAnne Klimes: Absolutely LOVE your video! (in my opinion) It's by far the best and easiest 'how to(crochet) video' on YouTube! What kind of camera are you using? It's amazing. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with everyone!

Barbara OConnor: I also like the stitch marker you are using. Can't wait to get started on this project. Thank you so much.

Esther Ludwig: You are an awesome teacher, I completed the hat, and changed the bottom to a double stitch, because I did not have another color yarn , and it turned out adorable, but I don’t know how to add a photo.

Anita Napier: I think this is the pattern for me! Thank you and Merry Christmas!!!

Taylor Raymond: You’re very easy to follow!! Can you please do a mitten one!!

Kim Scott: I made this hat for my daughter and she absolutely loved it! I did use charisma yarn as it's my favorite anyway!

Rachel Kimball: I used different colors but your tutorial was great!

Alt Laina: Thanks! This was my very first project and it turned out perfectly.

Heather Eilenberger: Love it. Can't wait to try

Graciela Duenas: Thanks, so pretty combination of the colors. I’ll try it soon ! Happy Holidays to you!

Elizabeth Vallely: WOW! Awesome quick and easy! Enjoy the vide thank you for sharing!!! Just subscribed to your channel!

Susan Gieski: Thank you. That's lovely.

sonya procacci: I love this hat. Trying to figure out what went wrong. I made this for my great niece who is 10 so I started my 2nd color when at 5.5 inches. Then continued with the color change as directed. I have completed it but it is very small. The inside circumference is only 15.5 inches. I used the same exact yarn as you did. It is adorable but seems to be infant size. Please help!

Linz82: This is a good tutorial. Thanks :)

Karen Sandoval FlacaA7: Thank you! Loved the video

Teresa D: Awesome instructional video. Very easy to follow along with. I have one question. I have really thick hair, so if I wanted to make it a bit wider, how many should I start off with on the hair tie? I know if I just increase it by a few, it will throw off the ending of each row. Or does it not matter as long as I keep to the pattern? Thanks again for sharing!!!

Tracey Randell: Beautiful hat. I love your color choices.

CS Richardson: Love the idea of enploying the rubber band! That's really thinking out if the box, so kudos to you! I also like single and half double crochet much better than the doubles so many others use. I'm going to try this with a lighter #3 weight yarn for the warmer months, as well. Your child is adorable! Thank you for easily understood instructions.

Debra's Crazy Life!: I just made a hat using the elastic and it turned out great! I'm going to run out and get that yarn and make another for my daughter to match her monkey socks I picked up from Roots. I think I'll drink my coffee before I start though lol. Merry Christmas

Christine S: Excellent video! Thank you for sharing!

Kim Hernandez: Thank you, you're video, is easy yo follow, hat is a gem... thank you, again. Blessings to you, for sharing.

Big Wanda Knows: Thanks for posting. Great video!!!!

Mom4two: I love that you used a hair tie! Would this work just as good using double crochet stitch? Do you have a pattern for the DC stitch or could I use any pattern and if so how many stitches would I start out with? Thank you so much

Randi LaRocca: Thank you for sharing. The hat is very cutie. Nice work.

Michelle Bruce: Thank you for sharing! ❤️

Robert McPheeters: I did the same I followed right along. I didn't have no problems thanks for your excellent teaching skills...

_HollowHaven_: This is adorable! Definitely will have to try making a messy bun/ponytail beanie! Would I be able to finish off the last grey row and attach a ribbed cuff and it still work out fine?

Madeleine Engel: Thanks for your time, very beautiful

Kay Clayton: Wonderful tutorial! I found iit very easy to follow. Could I use this pattern doing half double crochet stitches instead of single crochet?

Kim Ward: I’ve already made one of these by this pattern, and I measured the hat. It measures 16.75” I’m going to venture to say that might be a infant maybe a preemie size hat. It turned out adorable but way too small for my head which measures 23”. I’m still relatively new to crocheting. So I was wondering if you could explain to me how to increase each round to make the hat fit my big head? Or maybe even do a new video showing us how to make a adult size hat? PLEASE!

4nikkimay: Love it love it love it thanks a million

Magda Ruiz: Nice and easy, thank you for this tutorial!!!!

Tammy Perkins: Love this pattern. Easy to follow. Would love to send you pic of my hat. Where can I send it too?

Tabithia Williamson: Love the pattern and the video I’m working on mine currently. It seems pretty small though so I hope it actually fits in my head haha

Karen Mackin: very good video, and very clear, and easy to understand. How would you go about using a worsted weight yarn please??? thank you :)

Morgaine LeFey: When I did this pattern, my hat just got bigger and bigger toward the end. How did you get yours to pull in at the last rows? Thank you!

Nicole: It was a very helpful first timer video. Although I got super confused when increasing the stich to a larger round. I tried slowing down the video but then I get the youtube pause button on my screen and I can't see. I used regular yarn - in the end, my hat was way too small - either I have a big head or too much hair (my husband says too much hair lol) it would have been nice to know if you can increase the loops (from 33) on the start of the elastic to make a bigger size...? My bad - regular yarn leaves too many gaps on the finished product - so I will try again with a thicker fuller yarn or wool. Lots of useful tips

Evette Samuel: BEAUTIFUL thank you so much for the beautiful tutorial

Mary Hecht: So sweet at the end when your little one says hello. Hugs to your family

Jodi Burns: Thank you, love this hat. I would love this pattern in a regular beanie, not sure how many stitches to.add at at the top. Please and thank you.

wynetta80: Thanks for making this as easy as singing my ABCs! I know this video is 4 years old, its new to me! I love crocheting but sometimes no motivation or inspired. But this video kept me in a happy space and place to finish!! Anyway thanks!!

Joy Bradford: You are a great teacher.... Only if I would have teachers like you in school!!! But back in the 50-60s, with me having ADHD!! School was impossible, for me...Bless you and your family, always...Joy Bradford

Audrey Smith: I was able to make a ponytail beanie thanks to you! You're video is so easy to follow as I'm fairly new to crocheting. I've have people at my moms church ask for me to make their daughters some and my next batch is for 2 older kids and a 3 year old. If you could make a video on how to make one for a 3 year old that would be awesome cause I can't find one except the normal beanies and they want the ponytail beanies.

Goldie Barrett: So happy to see a smaller hole for thinner hair! The holes are always too big! TY!

Heather M: I love the tutorial! I do have a question though. For the band could I switch to a back loop only sc to give the ribbed look to the band?

Brittney Hink: Thanks for the easy tutorial!

Queenmom313: Can you advise on what size to make for a 10 year old girl? (ie: # of stitches per round, increasing round #'s etc.). I was also wondering about doing a ribbed cuff and attaching it to the hat body, also. Thank you for any information you can provide! : ) Great video!

Lexi Rae: This was such an easy video to follow. Maybe it’s just the yarn I used or i messed up somewhere but it doesn’t fit my head

Linda Taylor: Love this video. Thanks

D LB: Awesome video, no time wasted for advanced crocheters, can this pattern be done with a double crochet if we stick to the measurements? Also I used 2 hair bands in case one breaks it would give the hat a longer life. Thanks

Joyce Schoen: Thank you, Thank you for this!!! What a blessing you are!!! How do I save this video for future?

Lilia Baker: This for the darn adorable lady. I just recently joined ur channel & I love it. I have a question? i love the hat & I've already made a couple of messy bun ones. How can i start the crown& make a regular beanie from there.? Thanks. Lily Baker U r very talented & easy to follow.

Jlo C: Mine turned out so so small, I totally went by the pattern to a T! I have no idea what went wrong

fabiana alonso: Thank you can’t wait to try it.

Pamela Eikleberry: I love your voice it is very coming, and you do a perfect tutorial. Thank You so much.

Lori Cook: Love this, I'm not having all the good luck tho. Lol mines curled still at row 7.. should I pull out?.. Lol Yep in new but love love this and the color.. Thank you
