Today'S video, I'm gon na show you guys how to start dreadlocks or get dreadlocks with short hair like like how mine is now you guys. I got this message on Twitter out of all things. It'S from a man named art, nailless armas excited exactly but resist a man love your stuff. I'Ve got a question. Do you have any method? You would recommend for someone trying to start dreads with straight hair and a bus cut hair being like a couple of centimetres. Long, I remember you saying: sponge rubbing won't work on straighter, but I don't really want to wait for my hair to get longer to start the locking and I can't really twist around or anything similar, yet thanks in advance. This was on Thursday, so it's hair is still at a buzz cut, really short hair and bringing it to the bottom of it today his hair is most likely shorter than mine, so it's gon na be quite interesting. Not only that, but his hair is straight. So, let's talk about how you can do it and then I want to try some methods or method either way on my hair today. So I can show you guys, not only just tell you but show you what would possibly work alright guys, so the best way to figure out how to get your locs for yourself is to first off understand how dreadlocks work. Dreadlocks is essentially just a bunch of knots in your hair if you've ever had a knot in your hair and like you're picking your hair out. If you have curly hair or if you're combing it and then it seems to get stuck, that's enough. But what a dreadlock is is a continuous not from your scalp, all the way to the tip of your hair of multiple hairs. So with that being said, if there's a section of hair, so you take a little square section and that is knotted up and then you keep nodding up all the new growth or the roots that grow out. Then you'll eventually have some long dreadlocks. So, just to reiterate, take ten fingers. If you have ten fingers - and you section these fingers out from these fingers and then you knock these together and then they roll out the fingers. The roots are going to be loose, so you lock those up in order for them to keep locking up separately and if you don't lock them up separately, they will lock up together and that's just how you get free forms. Other things like that, but yeah. That is the basics of dreadlocks, is locking up the hair and allowing it to continue to lock up with maintenance and other things like that. Now that this guy mentioned that he has straight hair because with every hair type becomes a different way to actually get the dreadlocks now, if you have a 4c hair type, then it's different than person, who has a one hair type, I'm gon na give you guys A quick breakdown of hair types, I'm telling you it's one of the most key parts to getting rid locks so I'll break it down. Really quick for you guys. You got one all the way to four see over here. You can see the different hair types, I'm breaking it down for you guys and then, if your hair looks like this, this is most likely your air type, and this is the quick version. I have a link down below that, tells you your exact hair type and it breaks down the methods you can get with each hair type, but, like he asked in today's video, we're mostly gon na, be looking at some of the straight hair methods and how to Do those versus any of these ones because he does have straight hair? But I can't talk about a bit of these as well as I'm talking about the methods for this. Oh yeah straightener, which is the one plus the twos. Just these four right here and then you have your curly hair, which is the threes. Then you have your tight curls, which is the force you see. This is straight. This is a little wavy gets more wavy and then once it gets into threes, you have a little bit of curl in there versus waves and then the curls just keep getting tighter all the way to the tightest crocotta, and that is a simple breakdown for hair Types, if you have any questions on this and telling you click the link down below it'll help you guys out a whole bunch. So let's talk about the hair type that Arne Ellis has he has the straight hair type. Now, with the straight hair type, you noticed that there's not a curl so with dreadlocks, it's better. If your hair has a curl to it, because curls naturally want to lock up even waves, one two, but curls typically want two more because you can see right here. If you look at the diagram, you can see that these don't have anything to grab onto it's. It'S, of course these are wavy, and this is probably best as you're gon na get, but this one is straight so with that there's not much you can do, but there is a lot that you can do. I'M telling you, and with these you can see that it almost looks as if there are already dreadlocks, because if you compress this, it's gon na be like a coil. So picture like this. Take a straight piece of metal and trying to combine it with another piece of metal, but if you take a spring and another spring and you push them together and you're intertwine them, it's really hard to pull them apart. So that's a really good description of taking hair type and seeing how it applies to drum now, with our Nellis, with him being somewhere right here. There'S a few methods that you can do, especially with short hair in order to get your dreadlocks now, let's face it. If your hair is only a few centimetres long, there's really nothing. You can do besides be patient I'll talk more about that later on. If your hair is about an inch, maybe two inches you're still, you know it's. It'S gon na be tough because your hair is straight, but I want to walk you through a method that you can do if your hair is about two to four inches. Speaking of you directly. If your hair is only a few centimeters long, you're just got the weight. It'S it's impossible for your hair to lock up if it's not even long enough to touch other hairs around it now take my hair, for instance, it's getting pretty long. I feel like it just hit a growth spurt, but I feel like that's what happens like after a month of growth, it hits like a growth spurt for some reason, but maybe it's just how I see things. But if you take my hair link, for instance, I could possibly start dreadlocks now and we're gon na figure out today. So let's actually go try some methods and I'll walk you through some methods, as well of things that you can try with your straight hair and then I'll also tell you the methods that won't work so stay away from those, but those methods that I say that Won'T work will work for other hair types now before we get into I'm not gon na torch, you guys any longer by making you look at my overgrown hair line, so I'm gon na line myself up really quick, alright guys, that's waiter, alright, guys, I'm going to Check really quick: if I have these tools to make dreadlocks, I should have a crochet hook somewhere, so I'm a chicken here. I definitely need to reorganize. I just got a bunch of do-rags and brushes everywhere, needle guys I'd be lying. If I told you that this isn't everything that you need for dreadlocks no matter, the hair type is a crochet needle. This is linked down below I'm telling you guys pick yourself up one of these two of these three of these they last pretty long. So I mean you could even just get one, but I'm telling you. This is the only thing you need. If you want to get dreadlocks for any hair type is a crochet needle because it just helps out a whole bunch. I have the size of 0.5 millimeter, so you guys can see that right here and I'm linking this exact one down below it's perfect because it has a handle on it. You can pick these up from I mean you can try to find them at Walmart or you know a local store, but it's best to get one online because they come with a handle and it's easier to handle it like this. It'S easy to it's easier to keep and not break and not lose and all kinds of things like that. So get yourself one of these, and this is for any hair type and I'm gon na show you guys how to use this on shorter hair. So I'm gon na see if it works on my actual hair, so this is method number one crochet needle Inc. All you do with this is you're create a section, and then all you do after that is going with quotient link, I'm linking a crucian mewling technique down below a video on how to actually use it step-by-step in today's video I'm gon na try it on my Hair see if my hair is long enough to actually use the Kirsch needle and we'll go from there. There are other methods, I'm gon na, be mentioning in today's video, so stay tuned for that, and let's just try this out alright guys. First and foremost, can we just appreciate the waves right now sheesh they're, coming in like the moment they're like on point. I want to start my dreadlocks, so I want them to look really good before I actually get into the old wrecking process, but as far as today, I believe we can actually start out a dreadlock. I'M gon na grab the comb all these do-rags. So for the Christian cooking method, you want these two products. Obviously number one is gon na, be the crushed. Needle second is going to be a comb. It could be a regular comb. I'M just gon na use this one firmly a rat tail comb and, to be honest, you could eliminate the comb and use just the push. Needle being my hair is lookin, so good man, while making me do this just playin. I decided that I was gon na. Do it because I wanted to try it on short hair, because my hair is really short just to show you guys if it works and definitely if it's gon na work, for which I'm just going to take this out and then twist it a little bit, which I think it will work my hairs about close to two inches, so all I'm doing is I'm going to do the crochet needle method and a full tutorial on that is going to be linked down below, like I said, but I just want to see if it's Possible with the hair link that I'm at so I'm not going to explain it fully, I'm just going to show you me actually doing it and be able to tell you if it's working or not at this hair length and I'll tell you the best method. I think would be for this feather length. Okay, it's definitely doing something try to get a better angle, for you guys, all right guys. Here we go so you can see up here like if this is just a little ball and that's what I'm expecting to get out of. This is just a ball and a lot of you're wondering what are you gon na do about the waves right now? The cool thing about this is since it's such a small section, it's not gon na be tough to comb out if it even locks up at this at this length, and I'm gon na tell you like basically everything you know like I'm noticing that nothing's even catching And I'm gon na tell you what nothing is catching right now, because my hair is too short for it to actually pull together and lock together, because it's so short, if you've noticed if you've had an afro or if you've had curly, hair or kinky hair or Whatever you want to call it very coarse and bring a tight curl pattern, you notice your hair doesn't start to knot up when you're picking it out or combing it or brushing through it, whatever you're doing until it's a little bit longer. So I'm telling you longer here lots of way better, but I can definitely tell you there's a prime length. They want your hair and I would say, for any, hair type is about two to four inches. Even with longer, hair could be four to six inches, but with this it's a bust, it's too tough to actually start your locs with a crochet needle. But I can say this that you can do this all the way throughout your hair, because you can see that yeah. This is here and it's not going anywhere. You know what I mean like I'm messing with it and, of course it's getting kind of frizz tough, but you see that it's still there, but we'll see how easy it comes through to see if it was even effective and yeah. Just like. I felt it kind of tug a little bit, but literally just like that like and it's already back, you know I mean so it's kind of a bust trying to start dry docks at this hair link. My hair is only at about maybe two inches which it's going into its prime season of starting dreadlocks. So I'm telling you in about a month, I'm gon na be ready at two months. It'S gon na be prime, but I do want to start as soon as possible. I can tell you a method that will work on this, and that is sponge, but with that, it's not gon na work with straight here'sh. Sponge is just not recommended for straight hair types, because it's not going to be effective and it's not gon na be most efficient for you. Your your hair's gon na turn a little bit messy. It'S not gon na look as clean as you would like it to, and that's just really how the cookie crumbles when it comes down to using a sponge on straight hair. Now, with my hair type, I think I have a prime hair type for sponge rub and I think the prime hair link to start is now, but I don't want to start with sponge rub. So that is a spoiler for you guys that I'm not gon na. Be starting out with sponge rope, I might end up testing it to see what it looks like on my hair, but that's not what I want to go with so we'll see, but in the future video I'll most likely try it. I want to purchase myself one and test it out on myself with an actual dread sponge, not just a curl sponge and see what the difference is, because I've used this curl sponge before. But I do in a triad red sponge to be able to tell you guys the difference but, like I said this went back in like normal, and I mean it was no effect, because my hair is too short to actually start dreadlocks and a lot of people Fail at starting their dreadlocks because their hair is too short or it's not in the right parameters. In order to start them - and this shouldn't be discouraging, for you should be encouragement for you to grow your hair out to the prime length and you know know where to actually start with straight hair, I would recommend you to start with about four to six inches. It'S a prime length to start out with dreadlocks with straight hair, because it's gon na look very suitable for you I'll tell you what I mean by that. If you were to start with, maybe two inches or maybe three inches, it's going to be standing up and I doubt you're gon na like that, because with straighter hair, the hair tends to be more stiff. Now, if you have more of a coarse or curly hair pattern or whatever it is, your hair will lay down a lot better because it's not only gon na be heavier because of the density, but it's curly, so it locks up and mature is a whole lot Quicker than stray hair without maintenance, because that's a whole different ballgame stray hair can mature very quickly with maintenance. But you do want to try to mature your hair as much as possible organically, with your hair, doing it on its own and, of course, adding in maintenance. If you would like to go that route, but crochet hooking is the bunk'd which that is the number one method for dreadlocks. I can tell you that for sure and it's debunked it didn't work now. I did tell you how the dread sponge would work on my hair, but I don't want to do it today and plus. I don't only not want to do it today, but I don't have a dread sponge with me, so I'm gon na have to order one, which I do plan on still showing you guys a video of that and that's most likely gon na, be what I test To see if acts you want to do it first and before I go into any other methods with starting up my dreadlocks and mostly because I want to show you guys how I originally started my first set of dreadlock, which was with a dread sponge and my Hair was about four inches at the time. It'S crazy to think that was like literally seven years ago or somewhere in there like six or seven years ago. Now you guys another method you can. Try is twisting with gel, but I can tell you already if my hair, like wasn't locking up, especially with my hair type now considering people with straight hair, it's not gon na work. It'S not gon na lock up. It'S not gon na stand, especially if you're shorter than mine. It'S it's no use. It really isn't, and I know a lot of people at this hair length will want to try to use beeswax because it holds really well or they'll. Use like some really whole hard. Holding gel I'm telling you it's it's pointless to start at this rate, because it's not going to turn out that well and this you're just gon na be frustrated because of being and patience and I'll tell you. One thing is the root of frustration is being impatient. So just be patient and wait and just keep on waiting until your hair is at the prime length. Now I'll tell you the prime length right now: first-rate, hair again the prime length for straight hair or straight hair patterns. So we could say anything from 1 to 2 C would be about 4 to 6 inches. That'S a prime length! Now. How long does that take to grow out? It can sometimes take up to a year ago, but I can definitely say that you can most likely start your dreadlocks within 3 to 4 months, if you're starting at a bald head. But if you have already about an inch or 2 inches on your hair, give it about 2 to 3 months, like I said, but 2 months is probably a prime time for you to actually start because it seems like people with straight hair. This is like a myth that people are straight hairs: hair grows faster and longer, but it's not true the reason why people of coarse hair seem like their hair, isn't growing. That fast is because it's curling, while it's growing so it appears shorter, everyone's hair grows at about the same rate, which is about half an inch a month that coming out to 6 inches a year. So with that being said, if your hair is growing 6 inches a year, then grow your hair out for a year and then do it. I can even say you know if you grow your hair out for half a year and start your dreadlocks, it's possible, which I think six months of hair growth is a prime length to start for almost anybody and that's starting from bald. Now, if you're, starting with hair - and you just want to measure your hair to see how long you want to have it, I would say, with coarse hair start with two to four inches now for your hair, this schraeder, your hair, gets. You want to start with longer hair, so if you're straight just to say again start at about four to six inches and you're in prime season, so I just did bunked everything with starting your dreadlocks with short hair. It'S tough! It'S frustrating! If you want to get drilled, locs just be patient like for me. I want to get you a box, but I'm being patient and enjoying my hair through the process trying different hairstyles doing my own line ups, going to the barber trying new things and do these things in the process and it's gon na help. You guys out tremendously, because you're not gon na get bored with your hair, you're gon na find new things that you like like for me. For instance, I cut my hair really short and got waves. Then I found that I really liked it. I, like my hair short, I like having it this way, but of course I want to get back the dreadlocks, but there are certain things that I discovered in my patients so be patient and you'll find that you'll discover some amazing things in your patients, but guys That studies video, hopefully you really enjoyed it, and I liked that question. Don'T forget if you do have any questions, make sure to ask them and I'll definitely get back to you guys and if you guys do wan na. Follow me on Twitter, which is funny go follow me. It'S got the degree you can ask me questions through there, but on that I'll see you guys next time, hopefully guys do have an amazing day matter of fact have a great day. Peace and God bless you

GroovyB: Started my dreads 5 days ago but man I been watching your videos for about 2 years prior to ever wanting to get dreads and I finally made the decision now all I been doing the past week is watching all your old vids

Ellen R: One thing about dreadlocks, it takes a while to grow enough hair to start them, and they take time to matt. The process will help you grow as a person and/ or spiritually. Dreadlocks are not meant to be a temporary hairstyle so if you cannot make up your mind and keep them for a few years, don't bother with them. Or go for fakes or wathever. This video is completely pointless.

And use a “micro fiber towel” while it’s growing and by the time it’s long enough you might already have a process/progress starting. No promises it’ll work but that’s how I’d go about it. Anyway peace!

SagefrmdaO: Brushing your hair 24/7 makes your hair grow a lot faster then u think I had waves since I was little I got tired of it and said I wanted to switch it up and try coils or twist so I started brushing everyday and doin the wash method where u brush in the shower and I would put healthy oils in my hair to make it look silky to give it that shine and smell but it also makes your waves come in faster me doin that everyday I went from waves to pulling my hair down past my nose in like 2-3 months and mind u my hair was super low that I couldn’t even comb it and I grew my hair that long it took me just one summer before school to get it that long brushing your hair pulls it and makes blood flow through your head so it stimulates hair growth so take my advice your welcome enjoy your hair journey oh yeah and exercising playin sports and eatin the right stuff helps too
