POROSITY - The most important factor that needs to be understood.

Porosity is the personality of your hair, determining how well your hair absorbs moisture and product without this knowledge you could be doing more harm than good.

Find out your porosity:

The Float Test

1.Remove a single strand of hair

2.Fill a bowl/cup with room temperature water

3.Place the strand inside

4.Wait 2-5 minutes for your results

If the strand sinks QUICKLY to the bottom – HIGH porosity

If the strand sinks SLOWLY to the bottom – MEDIUM porosity.

If the strand floats – Low porosity.

It’s ok to have a mix

Low Porosity (“LOPO”)

LOPO hair is extremely resistant to accepting moisture. The hair cuticles are “low” preventing moisture from entering so before we even get to what kind of products you should be using, we need to be strategic when applying these products to ensure it gets into the hair strand (and stays there!). Anything that raises that cuticle slightly enables your hair to accept moisture (steam!).

Techniques to use:

1.Deep conditioning with a heat/steam cap, or overnight if that’s your thing!

2.Applying leave in conditioner straight after a steamy shower. My favourites are of course from OminiraNaturals.com The Honey Watermelon Infusion duo for extremely dry and brittle hair.

High porosity (“HIPO”)

HIPO hair has cuticles that are very highly raised and therefore easily broken so accepts moisture fine but looses it just as easily.

You’re faced with a double conundrum, hair that is naturally more brittle and because of its nature does not retain moisture which makes it even more likely to break!

You will of course need to ensure your hair is moisturised by using a Deep Conditioner and Leave-In, but because of this hair type a little bit more love needs to be shown.

Techniques to use:

1.Protein treatments - help to repair this broken hair shaft, allowing moisture to be maintained better. love the Ultimate Strength Intense Deep Conditioning Mask https://ominiranaturals.com/collection...

2.Hot Oil Treatments - Makes hair more oil-loving (vs water loving causes breakage)

3.Strengthening Herbs - Amla, Aritha, Fenugreek, Neem, Shikakai (found in Ominira Naturals shampoo & extra strength Hair Growth Potion, or you can infuse these in your DC or oils)

4.“Cationic” (Positive Charges) Ingredients - Attract to damaged parts of hair and make it more manageable (Cationic Ingredients

-Behentrimonium Methosulfate

-Behentrimonium Chloride

-Polyquaternium 7

-Cetrimonium chloride

-Stearalkonium Chloride)

5.Sealing with Oil - to strengthen and prevent moisture loss

SHRINKAGE

Keeping your hair stretched prevents it from our worst enemy:TANGLES. WHY?

Shrinkage = Tangles = Breakage = No length retention

So if your goal is length retention you might want to avoid styles that encourage shrinkage (wash n gos, puffs etc).

Opt for:

✅braid outs

✅twists outs

✅blow outs

To take it a step further, if you want the optimum environment for growth then protective styling is your best friend

A protective style is anything that keeps your ends tucked away and your hands/combs out of your hair

Opt for:

✅Wigs

✅Weaves

✅Braids

DETANGLE only 1 (1) When wet (2) Soaked in slippery conditioner (Tangle Slayer from Ominirnaturals.com is BOMB!) (3) Fingers first (4) Within sections (5) TAKE YOUR TIME! (6)Rewet each individual smaller section to reactivate the conditioner this is important. (7) Cut out any single strand knots (SSKs) this will prevent you from trying to comb through them and cause further breakage. (8) Combs 2nd! The purpose of a comb/brush is not REALLY to detangle hair, it is to REMOVE shed hair. (9) DO NOT OVER-DETANGLE - Our hair type is naturally intertwined and prone to tangles so it is impossible to remove every single one in its entirety. Have you noticed that as soon as you remove tangles, a few new ones form? So don’t stress yourself, work to get your hair to a point where it is a lot more manageable (no deep rooted knots) and leave it there. There is no need to try to get a comb through it snag free every time like typical straight hair, that is just something our hair can never achieve (and that’s ok!)

Three reasons why your hair is not growing, you don't know your hair porosity, you let your hair shrink up. You detangle dry, matted hair. Do you do any of these read caption for details?

Denysha Dials: Shrinkage doesn’t cause breakage. Mishandling it does.

TRUTHSERUM: Keeping me and my daughter’s hair stretched has been a gamechanger! We have retained so much length. I went from twa to shoulder length and she has gone from shoulder length to waist length in just a 2-3 years We have began mostly wearing two strand twists, flat twists or loose pony tails loose buns styles. Also during the wash process, we section hair in Bantu knots or twisted mini buns. We only wash ONE loose section at a time. We keep the loose section stretched most of the time by pulling taut on the ends with one hand and massaging scalp with finger tips with the other hand. After rinsing this section then we quickly put back in mini bun and put in hair clip/clamp if necessary to hold in place. We then proceed to every section one by one. This has kept single strand knots, matting and tangling to an utter minimum.

Briana Smart: Shrinkage doesn’t cause the breakage anymore than stretching it does. If anything it’s way better to allow your hair that naturally shrinks, to shrink as it meant to. Our naturally curly hair shrinks. Stretching and excessive manipulation can actually increase breakage. I’ll put some tips and warnings below; Tips to stop excessive breakage; ▪️don’t over manipulate your hair (learn to take care of it in it’s natural state) ▪️Detangling wet hair with a smooth conditioner using your hands first and then a proper detangling brush ▪️wash/condition regularly (weekly washing if possible, people have seen quicker hair growth) ▪️if you use silicones you will need to use a sulfate shampoo to remove them off of your hair, but then try to ditch both. Warning: sulfates aren’t good for the body so ditching silicones to avoid sulfates would be best for your overall. Residue of sulfates have been found in the heart, brain, and lungs. They can be contaminated by a known carcinogen. It isn’t worth it nor is it necessary to get the extra oils off of your scalp. Sulfate free shampoos give a natural clean without the extra danger.

Pretty Almond Dutchess: Y’all gotta stop listening to a lot of these YouTubers on Hair. What works for them may not work for you. It is best to get to know your hair and it will grow and be healthy. Hair is always growing, hair does not stop growing. Having healthy hair is better than having long hair. KNOW UR HAIR‼️

your neighbourhood clown: “You detangle dry matted hair” Heavy handed African parents: **nervous laughter**

1GoldenBreeze: I don't know my porosity, and I don't stretch my hair because I wear a wash-n-go, but I don't detangle dry matted hair. My hair has grown very well.

alliyahismyname: I think not allowing your hair to shrink is denying an aspect of natural hair, and doesn’t cause breakage but makes detangling require more gentleness.

Vera Hannaford: My hair totally shrinks when wet and I gotta live with that. Really so much of this is genetics.

Gates Family: Heeey Janet Thanks so much for all you tips! I'm a fairly new subscriber and have enjoyed learning about this journey. You're much appreciated.

lullabiez: My sister had extremely long kinky hair that went all the way down her back and I have shrinkage and short hair and I wanted to grow my hair out so bad and my mom said to put in hair food every day but I honestly just want a hair routine for my hair type

Ms. Mi Witdatbul: I stop detangling dry hair thanks to another video Janet made and now I will keep my hair stretched.

Rie xo: Your hair is so thick long and healthy thank you for the tips I love ur channel!!

kim williams: I Agree! My Hair is Down my Back! Very Long and Thick!

wonderspace90: But I like my hair shrunk and curly. After shampooing & conditioning, I put leave in conditioner or moisturizer and then oil. I like to comb the moisturizer so my hair gets more curly and shrinks. Plus I don’t know how to keep it elongated. Thank you for the tips.

k. chiney: How do I leave my hair porosity? And I do have extreme shrinkage! How do I fix that?

Liz: Hair porosity was never a factor until last few years.

darktnt: I think u can stretching you're hair by doing tying hair styles became when I was little I used to have long hair and it was puffy but when it was started getting tied it started to get stretched and I also used to used Vaseline every day on my hair witch makes ur hair soft everyday peoyat school be touching my hair to much fr

Cassea Moore: HOW DO I FIND MY HAIR PROXIMITY ? AND WHAT DO I DO AFTER THAT ? WHAT DOES THAT DO TO HELP ?

black queen: Hair porosity thing is not always accurate because I know for a fact I'm high porosity fine thine hair girl but hair doesn not sink in water but doesn't take long to wet either.

Sunni RedboneCalifornia: Well, I purposely keep my hair short. So, there's my reason.

_fayeeth: I’d also add having unidentified sources of breakage

Tabitha Touray: God Bless you and Family Janet ,thanks for this tip Shalom

Jes Virgo: How do I stretch my hair?

Miracle Lechinger: The only thing I do is let my hair shrink, I know my porosity and detangle with drench or damped hair.

amaya jackson: I’m so tired of people talking about hair and don’t have a clue what they’re talking about what the title of this video should have been is reasons why you can’t retain length. Hair goes through a cycle and it will constantly grow because it grows from the scalp not the strand. It’s what you do with it once it grows out of your scalp. The cycle of hair: growth, shedding, rest, and then it starts all over again. God created the hair strand perfectly healthy so I don’t understand why we put butters, oils and creams on our hair for “ growth” just get a good shampoo and conditioner and keep it simple! Do lots of wash n go’s and use a gel or a mousse for your styler gel is for hold mousse is for manipulative styles like twist outs/ braid outs. STOP BEING AFRAID OF SHRINKAGE AND KINKY HAIR PERIOD! All type 4a , b , c hair is not the same! Just like all woman that weigh 140 pounds don’t look the same shape wise because of height and etc, same with thicker woman, or woman that have DD breast they not gonna all look the same. STOP GOING INTO YOUR NATURAL HAIR JOURNEY THINKING THERE’S SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR HAIR! IF YOU THINK SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR KINKS THEN YOU WON’T ENJOY THE JOURNEY!!!!!!!!!! ❤️

Tatyana Hannah: Hi my is Tatyana, I'm learning about my natural beautiful hair. How do you stop breakage though. I want healthy overall but I do want long hair I always dream of.

Jinnel Shennae: You don't need to know your hair porosity for it to grow and shrinkage doesn't cause breakage if that was the case most people wouldn't have hair at all. Just keep your hair moisturized and in a state that doesn't cause excessive tangles and you will retain length

Tanti G: Okay all well and good but can someone tell me how to cut my hair in January and have it down my back by summer. Now that’s the video I want to see. Love the 4z hair Gyrl❤

The Best: Beautiful

Lady in red: Shrinkage shows your hair is healthy there’s should be shrinkage if there’s isn’t there might be a chance your hair is damaged not sure tho
