I was like ... wait - where are they? I recognized that staircase right away but the younger girls were out of place in their Maryland home. Since they didn't grow up there, my brain had to re-adjust to them being in a different environment. So nice to see Joe and Alena back visiting their parents with all the kids.

Queen Nanna: So many cringe moments in this interaction with Joe's mom visiting. She really has not changed her feelings about Alena. She never wanted Joe to marry a black woman and a woman with four kids with different men. Joe's mom does not care how smart and accomplished Alena or her kids are. She wanted Joe to marry a Korean woman or even a white woman without children even if that woman was a high school dropout. She will never be able to see herself or Joe in a half-black half Korean kid. It was obvious how uncomfortable she was. Joe kept asking her did she see him or herself in the kids and she barely answered because she can't see herself as having black blood or her son as having black blood. She said to Joe that he was an embarrassment to the family for marrying Alena. And she still feels that way obviously. She does not care that Alana's kids call him Appa, speak Korean, follow some Korean customs, give their kids Korean names, are smart, eat Korean food etc. She does not care that Alana has a Ph.D. and that they live in California in a nice area and have a successful YouTube channel. None of that matters to Joe's mom because at the end of the day Alena is black and had four kids when she married Joe. And that is what Amaya is going to find out if she goes to school in China. Chinese people don't like black especially dark-skinned black people no matter how smart they are. Did everyone notice the elephant in the room? None of Alana's kids outside of her and Joe were invited to the visitation because Joe's mom does not want to see them.
