British Shorthairs are one of the most famous cat breeds in the world. I have to admit this. Gorgeous kitty has an impressive stockier look. Due to their bulky appearance. British Shorthairs are regarded as the bulldogs of the cat kingdom., But what are British Shorthairs like? Would they be a good choice, I'll start with the history of the breed, especially since it's quite bittersweet. British Shorthairs cats or Brits for short, appeared a long time ago. Their ancestor is the European Cat. The typical'' alley'' cat living in Europe. European Cats were brought to England by Romans approximately 2000 years. Ago. British Shorthairs are believed to be the offspring of these cats and the European Wildcat.. That would explain why British Shorthair cats have more massive bodies than other cats., And now, let's get to the fun part.. Surprisingly, the British Shorthair was at first just an ordinary cat living on the streets of England.. They were so common that nobody paid much attention to them. ... until the 1800s. Harrison Weir, a dedicated cat lover and regarded as the father of cat associations had a great passion for these cats.. He was absolutely in love with them. Mr. Weir had a wonderful British Shorthair cat that participated in, what's known as the first modern feline competition.. This show took place in London's Crystal Palace.. Although his cat was quite an old lady, she managed to win a prize. This changed people's opinion towards British Shorthair cats.. Their fame skyrocketed and they were finally recognized as a separate breed.. Sadly, the extraordinary popularity these cats enjoyed didn't last long. By the 1900s long-haired exotic breeds, such as Persians made their way to England. These new arrivals caused Brits to fade into the shadows once again. Their downfall was so extreme that, after World War II, British Shorthair cats, Almost disappeared. It took considerable effort from some incredibly dedicated breeders to revive this breed. After the war. The remaining British cats were bred with other cats, precisely because only a handful of them were left. Among the cats contributing to British Shorthair's revival. We count the Russian Blue. The Chartreux and Persian Cats., The British Shorthair continued to exist and gradually gained more and more fame.. Today it occupies an incredible 3rd place in the world., It's a very popular cat breed in America and Europe. Let'S talk about their unique appearance. British Shorthair cats have a muscular massive and well-balanced body.. Their head is round broad with ears set far apart.. Their eyes are huge round and incredibly expressive. Brits have short and dense fur, which feels like a plush to the touch.. It'S not double as the fur of other cats. By the way, you'll also find British cats with semi-long fur and they’re called British Longhairs., Even though they're not accepted everywhere as a breed they're on their way.. The only difference between British Shorthairs and British Longhairs is the fur length, But let's go back to today's stars.. The most popular color found in this breed is a solid dark, gray or blue, as it's called by cat associations.. However, it's not the only color allowed.. There are no less than 30 colors and patterns. Permitted. Blue is the most popular because the cats used to invigorate the breed were mostly gray: Russian, Blue Chartreux and blue Persian cats., And now, let's move on to the most exciting part, their personality Cats of this breed are known for their calm. Manner. Brits are affectionate with their owners, but not in an excessive way.. Unlike other cats, they tend to be just as loving with all family members.. However, British Shorthair cats don't like to be picked up or held at all. If you pick them up, they won't hesitate to show you just how displeased they are. They'll, try to escape and will make adorable squeaky sounds, but without any trace of aggression. You'll hardly be able to hold them for more than 5 seconds.. Besides, British Shorthairs are not the kind of cats to sit on your lap. They'll sit comfortably next to you, though, Brits tend to be polite cats. If you sit on the couch and you're in their way, they'll most likely jump over you instead of walking on you.. Even if cats of this breed love hanging out, they frequently have energy outbursts., Don't be surprised if your cat suddenly starts running around acting crazy, Just enjoy the show You're guaranteed a good portion of laughter After these energy spikes, the cat will return to its favorite thing. Doing nothing In terms of activity level they're somewhere in the middle. British Shorthairs, prefer to play alone with small toys they can toss. Around. Cats of this breed will not cause too much mess around the house. They're too lazy to try to open doors or drawers, and if you open the fridge, it's unlikely your British Shorthair will jump into it.. Also, most British cats can be easily taught to stay away from counters. You could say they are sensible, well-mannered cats., But don't count on that. After all, every cat is unique and can behave differently.. How noisy are they Well? Opinions are divided here.. Some of them are very talkative, while others not at all. And even if they don't like being hugged, they love to be pet. They strive to receive affection and will reward you with a loud purr. Brits are actually renowned for their powerful purr., But British Shorthair cats are also independent., Of course, they'll be thrilled when you come home and they'll greet you at the door, but at the same time They don't mind spending time alone., You can get only one and rest assured your cat is happy.. As for other cats, British Shorthairs prefer to be the only cats. That'S because British Shorthairs are not very interested in other felines.. If you have another very playful cat sparks. Might fly, Let's say you really want two cats. What should you do In this case? I recommend taking two British Shorthair kittens from the same litter.. However, don't be discouraged by this recommendation? If you really want two cats, you can make them accept each other, even if their personalities are different.. Of course, the dog must be well-behaved and taught how to interact with a cat., As for children, Brits tolerate them very well and get along with them.. Besides they're gentle and patient.. Instead of behaving like a puppy and continuously seeking your attention, the British Shorthair will be more like a roommate., A very fluffy one with irresistible eyes. Please remember that kittens adopted from catteries have higher chances of fitting these characteristics as they're socialized early on.. How long do British Shorthair cats live? Fortunately, they tend to be relatively healthy and their life expectancy is between 12 and 20 years.. Of course, this also depends on where you get your cat. From. Authorized. Breeders do their best to sell healthy kittens.. Specifically, they won't let cats with health issues breed. Someone who does this only for money may not be so. Responsible. Breeders also give you a contract to sign and have a reputation to keep.. I insisted on this subject because there are some life-threatening health issues Brits can suffer from and they're both inherited from their ancestors.. The first one is the infamous HCM, which usually affects middle-aged and senior cats.. It can also occur earlier.. Unfortunately many times the first symptom is sudden death. To detect it earlier. You'Ll have to take your cat to a veterinary cardiologist for an ultrasound every year.. The other severe condition is polycystic kidney disease which can lead to kidney failure.. In addition to these conditions, don't forget that British Shorthairs are relatively lazy. Cats You'll have to carefully monitor their weight as obesity will worsen any symptoms, your cat may have., And how do you take care of a British Shorthair cat, As with any other cats, you'll need to clean their ears, clip their nails and brush their teeth with a Special toothbrush and toothpaste., As for the fur it's recommended to brush it once or twice a week. Brushing, will help the cat get rid of hair that was about to fall out.. Thus you'll have less cat hair flying around the house, and the cat will not swallow as much.. In other words, caring for them is a breeze And now the crucial question: how much do they cost A pet quality kitten costs between 1100 and 1500 $ while a show quality, one costs up to 2000 $ and even more A quick note here. Pet quality refers to kittens who don't have the perfect appearance to win prizes and are sold to regular people looking for companions.. Besides this there's no difference between the two types.. If you can't afford the price, I think the best option for you is to adopt a kitten or an older cat from a shelter. Alina Jodłowska: Very accurate description! I have a gorgeous lilac queen. She's 3 years old and I have her for 6 months now. She's very easy going with kind nature. She doesn't like to be picked up but loves petting especially around face,ears and head,but touching thighs, belly or paws is a bed idea- she'll run away. She welcomes me when I get home and follows me around everywhere around the flat or balcony. When she's resting she likes to keep body contact with me,so there will be always paw or back touching me. She sleeps with me in bed,somewhere around my legs. She's not scared of guests and is relaxed around new people too. She's not interested in my food,likes only her dry food. I often have to throw away wet food if it's not particular texture,flavour or brand. Not very chatty cat as well, only from time to time. She loves watching cat entertainment on TV such as birds, bees or fishes. Easy to co-exist with my Molly.

Cat: Love the ones that have more Persian genes with the small, set far apart ears. It's super cute when a British cat behaves like a "puppy" and plays fetch. I was pleasantly surprised when my British Silver brought a toy mouse back to me to toss for him again. I highly recommend getting them into the habit of playing with toys early on and staying active, especially after neutering, which is when they tend to become more "lazy" and gain weight. My male British silver loves his toy mice and can keep himself engaged for hours just kicking those around. I also find that he loves hairball toys that I create from hair brushed off from himself (lol), and he loves these more than his toy mice (a little narcissist there loving his own scent!). The British is definitely my favorite breed and the kittens are just so adorable with their oversized heads and perpetual smile.
Sharane Wiedenhoeft: My 12-year-old Brit was a stray that was left at the end of someone's driveway. She is vocal with a sweet little meow unless she is fighting with her tuxedo cat sister. Then she lets out a lion-like growl of discontent. Her chubby cheeks that remind one of a teddy bear are her best feature- so cute. Bedtime is her favorite time as she meows excitedly on the bed while I get ready. The two of us watch cat videos on the iPad as she snuggles by my side. She is a treasure.

Mark Barton: After 35 years of breeding Brits, I can say that the video is fairly true to form. During WW1 and WW2 there was an attraction to "blue" cats but most pedigreed cats, no matter what breed were desimated by the wars. The introduction of other cats on the UK isles built the breed back up. But also introduced other patterns and color varietites. The Brit is a "supervisor" and "manager" of the household. They know everything that's going on in their world. It is true they do not like to be held but they will sit by you near you and very in touch with what you are doing. Brits are a strong independent family companion.

Tonmoys31: As I have first hand experience with this breed. I will say this is the most coolest cat breed ever. Extremely goofy and sometimes outlandishly stubborn. Mostly a couch potato. Every cat breed is different and has unique traits and personalities but BSH breed is really something truly unique. Once you own this breed of cat, some how every other breed feels like they are just ordinary cats in terms of personalities. This is the BEST cat to have around as they are super friendly with everything. They will even snuggle up to complete strangers.

James M: I have been lucky enough to have had/have two British shorthair and two Maine coon cats (all males.) The pic at 5:50 shows two young versions of both. The Maine coon is a lot larger and very vocal. If I could pick it would be a 50/50 split, they both have great temperaments, the Brit has a cute pretty boy look with perfect fur while the Maine coon has a more rugged manly appearance as far as cats go. I have owned/own two of each because they are both great breeds.

K War: I can hold my British shorthairs for ages like babies. I breed them and have done for years and I’d say the only thing this video got wrong is that you can’t pick them up or hug them. I’ve trained mine to sit and one of my cat blesses me when I sneeze lol.
How You Feline?: Hi, I have a question! I've been contemplating on whether I should adopt a British Shorthair female cat from an acquaintance who can no longer care for them due to work. The cat is currently 3 months old. I also have a half-Persian/half domesticated female cat. She's 3 years old already...and gets along with random cats who drop by our yard (LOL), but she's really the only one at home. I was just wondering, since you said on your video that the British Shorthair would like to be the only cat in the home, do you think it would be a good idea to adopt the cat of my friend? know I have to socialize them together but I'm not a cat expert and sometimes I do duties in the hospital (though there is always someone at home), but Im just worried if the temperaments of these two breeds would be a good fit, or if perhaps I should just reconsider adopting it? Thank you!

Hä Ag: the only time my brit is talkative is when he wants food.. he's extremely lazy!! he spends 90% of the day sleeping in my wardrobe but he spends a lot of time on my lap which is very uncommon for their breed but every cat is unique and behaves differently. Occasionally she licks my face and lays on my chest in the morning when I’m waking up❤️ she not as agile as my other two cats which are rag dolls. Unfortunately, all the cats don’t get along. One of my ragdolls, a 3 yo neutered male will attack her. So uncharacteristic of a rag doll... We have a big house and good system to keep them apart so everyone is happy❤️☺️

One difference to what you said is about personal space, my boy will sit on you and will get as close to your face as possible, even when I'm sitting up he will climb up to my chest so that we are face to face. Reinaerys: I absolutely adore these. We have a 6 year old british shorthair boy (a colorpoint with blue eyes, so cute) and he's amazing. He's actually very vocal and loves to cuddle - mostly with me and not so much with my fiancé tho. He doesn't like being picked up, but enjoys petting. He's mostly lazy but has bursts of energy and runs around the house here and there, or he plays with our other kitty. He can also be very jealous. We got a new kitten this year, a Maine Coon girl, and he's not verry happy when I pay attention to her instead of him. But in general they get along pretty well - we got her cuz we noticed he was quite lonely and sad when we weren't at home, so this way he has a companion :3

Col Conlan: G'day. My British Shorthair male is 30 months old, from a recognised breeder. Contrary to breed characteristics, he loves being picked up and carried on shoulder, and will sit quietly on my lap for hours at a time. He tends to have seperation anxiety if I work away for more than 2 days , even in the company of my wife. 95% inside cat, but when outside will hunt and pounce on any moth, butterfly or moving item. He had never been outside before 18months old , and I think he believed that the Sky was going to fall on him, but with time and encouragement is semi comfortable in yard, as long as he has company. BEST CAT I HAVE EVER HAD, and reciprocates all the love he is given.
