Hi friends welcome back to my channel, I'm Sara Martin with the country chemist. Yes, I am talking something different today, so I don't know why I seem to always just do hair videos on Instagram, but I'm switching it up and I'm coming over here to YouTube to do a hair tutorial. So if you want to check it out today, we're gon na be talking about Flatiron straightener. However, you want to call it. I usually call it a straightener. Some people call it Flatiron curls, I'm gon na show you how I use my straightener to wave my hair, which is my everyday, normal go-to, so we're gon na talk about hiding at different curls using the same straightener and some tips and tricks. So if you want to check it out, keep watching be sure to LIKE and subscribe. So you see you in my next tutorial drops and thanks for being here, alright, ladies, let's get right on into it. If you are new here welcome, I normally don't wear my hair straight, so this is kind of rare when you see my hair um not waived already, but I normally waived my hair on day one because I get oh gosh that made my hair a little flat. I get the I guess most where time from my hair, when I waive it something about my hair straight, I have very stick straight. Hair like this is nothing I did nothing to it, except throw it back. So naturally, my hair super straight. I just blew it dry this morning and we're gon na get right into how to wave it. Okay, so I prefer a 1 inch straightener Flatiron, whatever you want to call it this one's from launched. This is the Loretta. It is my favorite by choice because of this beautiful little LED red light. No, it's not LED infrared believe um strip right here and I've tried a lot of straighteners in the past. I will be real. This one gives my hair so much more shine, and it's so it glides through my hair just so much easier than any other one. I'Ve used and I just feel like it works better than a lot of the other ones. I'Ve tried. So this is my go-to I'll link it down below. If you want to check it out um, I love that I can control the temperature. My last one I had did not do that and I find this one does so I get less hair damage. So I already put in a heat protector: if you have dry or damaged hair, don't use hot tools without a heat protector, okay. Otherwise I just have my products. I blew it dry with and let's let's go in with I'm just going to peace out my hair and get the majority the bulk of my hair. So my hair is mostly thick on the top I'm gon na get that out of the way and just clip it up and I'm gon na start with the lower sections. So don't judge. I am in massive need of a haircut like this is long for me. You'Re new here, you might be like your hair - is short Thera nope. No. This is super long. So back here where my undercut has grown out the only way I can really get to those pieces. I love using a wand, but this is so much easier to get really short pieces. So if your short hair, like me and you find that difficult use a straightener back on those lower shorter layers, so let's talk actual curls. So, while this bad boy is heating up its already, he did, I am going to show you a couple different ways that you can use a straightener or a flat iron to curl your hair. Okay, so here is the gist. Don'T get too big of pieces? You'Ll see that this is pretty thin of a piece. Okay, the thicker you get, the looser your wave is gon na, be okay, and it's probably not going to last as long throughout the week. So if you're like me, I like to get a good three plus days from your waves. Yes, it will naturally relax over each day, but I'd like to do my hair once and I'm a dry shampoo lover. What can I say - and I don't like to wash my hair - that much because it's damaging right and let's be real momma - doesn't have the time so then section so this might look like a thick section, but I have very thin hair in the front of my Near my face, so here's what we're gon na do, it's all in how you hold your Flatiron. So it's all in the angle. You hold it okay and how much you turn. So what I like to do is I always like to hold it straight up and down when I'm going around my head this way. Okay, so those bottom layers, I'm gon na, hold it straight up and down, and I'm going to put it in close to the root. If you want more volume up here, then you're going to start your curl up here and you're gon na pull that hair away from your head. Okay, the more you twist that iron before you pull it down the tighter your curl is gon na be. Do you see how tight that is? That'S because I did a full twist of my wrist okay, so just think of that, like think of an like think of how much you're gon na twist your wrist okay, full twist, it's gon na give you the most curl a half twist is going to give You less so I love a straightener, because you know what you get too much curl, you simply pull it through a couple times and look at that. It'S nice and relaxed there's no way you can really mess this up. I feel like a wand, is a little bit harder because you don't have that flexibility to go back in and really straighten the ends. If you want or, however you want to do it, okay, so let's try it again and I'm just gon na take again thin piece and I'm going and it can be wider here. It'S just when you feel thick like I've got too much hair in there. I can feel it because it feels thick keep the layers thin. Okay, it's gon na give you a more PC. Look because you're gon na have more separation. If you want more of like your entire head kind of doing that, then you want to get thicker pieces. It'S all in the look you're going for okay, let's try it again and this time we're only gon na do half twist and then we're gon na pull it through. Okay, do you see how loose so this just kind of curled here it left from here down more straight now? Another option you can do is how much you hold the ends, so I'm gon na. Take that same piece again, I feel like you guys. I know it's so hard to see dark hair, so I'm gon na try to hold that back. Okay, so another option, because that one is really loose up here is or down. Here is how much you hold the ends and if you completely curl the ends or if you leave the ends out, so I'm gon na do not a full twist and I'm gon na go all the way. I'M gon na leave those ends out and then I'm gon na let go okay. Can you see the difference there? I got more of a wave here with straight ends. Now you can also just do a full twist pull it all the way through and then go back in straighten that end and if you like your ends straight. That is an easy option as well. Okay, so hopefully you guys can see that. So today I'm gon na kind of mix it up. So sometimes I like to do my full head a certain method. Some days I like to literally do different curls throughout my hair, to give it more texture and more variety, and it's going to have more of a funky curl. So um you know play with it, see what you like. It'S really hard to get stuck in. I mean I find it with short hair, it's easy to get stuck in a rut and sometimes it's hard to find your new favorite way to curl until you experiment guys know me at all. You know that is like my motto since I'm a chemist and all okay, so twist it let that drop okay, if you pull as soon as it is dropped, it's gon na relax that down. If you hold it up and let it cool and then drop it, it's gon na make the curl tighter, because it cools in your hand before you release it, so I am gon na go ahead and keep curling okay. So a few things I wanted to mention is you can see. I always turned away from my face, and that is a way I like to do it. Sometimes I like to mix it up and go. I always do the front layers away, but then, as you get around the back of your head, you can totally switch those up to give your curls a little bit more movement, totally personal preference. So another thing is: I have super short layers in the back, especially down here near the nape of my neck. I tend to curl those under just so I don't have super straight pieces when I'm curling my hair and leaving these pieces really straight like where it's just curled here and then straight then I can get away with just leaving those back pieces straight. But again it's kind of dependent upon the look I'm going for and then the last thing was you can kind of see when I was grabbing each piece. I really was taking time to kind of smooth it between my fingers. Before I went in with the iron, you can use a comb, you can use a brush, but really the more um tousled your hair is in there the more it's going to look frizzy when you're done. So you really want to kind of smooth that. So you get the best possible smoothing action from your straightener. Let this baby do its job and it works so well. So now I'm going to just take my hair and I'm going to piece it out one more time. I still have a lot of hair right up here, but I'm gon na kind of let down that next layer and I'm gon na. Do it again. Okay. So if you saw I went away from my face for these first pieces, then I went towards my face and then back away kind of alternating so that very bottom layer, not everyone sees it. You don't have to be particular. I feel like once I start getting into these layers more of those curls show, and so I take a little bit more care. I guess you could say to doing that. Okay. So now I have this big chunk on top of my head and what I'm gon na do is. I am going to kind of just piece it out one layer at a time and curl it that way so again away from my face that out towards my face, okay - and I find that helps, give volume as well. Another thing you can do to play around with it is to curl it sideways, so you can totally keep your straightener more perpendicular and then flip it over. Okay, it's gon na give you a different kind of curl as it lays um, and I find if you are one of those people that love to switch up your part on different days, either to give more volume. You might really like this method because I feel like it does give more volume, because if you see you're pulling it directly up from the scalp right here, okay and then you kind of let that cool and then, as you flip it over you're gon na get A whole lot more lift and these curls are gon na, be more voluminous. If you curl everything exactly down in the direction it's gon na go, it's not going to give you quite as much volume. Just another fun thing. You can try to see how you like it: okay, I'm gon na, go this direction, these curls and I'm just gon na kind of mix it up on the top to see what I like, sometimes my favorite, looks, are when I don't go in a particular direction With these top pieces, okay, now I'm not saying I'm gon na leave these this direction. This is what I look like with my hair parted down the middle, which I never do, but hey it's an option. Okay, so I'm going to then take all this top section that is laying down I'm gon na flip it back over and then I'm going to curl it this way and just to mix it up. Now I have a lot of hair on the top of my head compared to the rest of it, so I'm taking even smaller pieces than normal, it's straight okay, so I think we're just about at this part now I kind of figure out where I'm gon na Part, my hair: let's try, let's just keep going with these pieces. I think I've gotten almost all of them and I just keep going until I'm like there's no more straight hearts anymore. You can keep your hair separated out. I just tend to go more willy-nilly on the top sections, let's just say I'm not as precise on my hair as I am with my makeup. Okay, so I think I'm golden. I think I've gotten all of my hair now. Can you see that volume and you guys still have flat my hair - was before okay, so I've been getting a lot of questions lately about how my hair so shiny for one I've noticed a huge difference when I switched to this flat iron. I think it's the titanium and how it feels in the moisture in my hair it doesn't fry my hair and then the second thing most likely is definitely this minaj marula oil holy buckets. If this was sold as a perfume, I'd be wearing it every day. My daughter is obsessed with it too much. She keeps asking me to spray it on her hair because it's just amazing so, if you're afraid it's gon na be too heavy, which this is a weightless formula, moisturizes conditions - and it just gives amazing shine, just spray it in your hands a little bit and then Just kind of run it through I mean you can immediately see even with this horrible lighting. Oh my gosh, okay, so I've been using that and I love the Salton Sea texturizing spray. I did put this in my hair before I blew it dry, but you don't know me I'm kind of obsessed with texture in my hair and I think it's because my hair has no natural texture whatsoever yep. That piece is gon na drive me nuts, and this is why you leave our irons on and we adjust if necessary, there we go just straighten any wonky ins. I always bust out the mirror and check the back, but I usually work product in and kind of break up those curls first, because sometimes they look wonky once you break them up and they start relaxing a little, then they look good. Okay. The other thing I like to use is the DejaVu dry shampoo at the roots that gives awesome texture. I even used the root booster and I know this is technically like using damp hair product, but I have issues just right here on my crown and this stuff is like magic. I just take the smallest amount, so I'm gon na part my hair right there and I'm just gon na spray. It right there, I'm gon na, take in tease it a little bit and then I'm gon na work that product in. Can you tell the lift? I just got in the back, so my hair is pretty heavy and it likes to fall flat at the crown of my head. So if you have that issue just use a little bit of product right there hold it in place. Okay, then, I just spray with my three Way: hair spray, mainly just for flyaways the front of my hair, and then I do like a really light. I keep it on the one on the light hold and I just do a very light mist there. Okay, now we come in and we polish, so here's where I get a little bit more picky. Yes, I love texture, but I don't want any of my ends. Looking frizzy or unruly, I just want volume right, so I use the gentleman's pomade. Yes, it's for men, but it's amazing for short hair as well, and I just use the smallest amount and I'm going to just kind of do my flyaways and the ends, and this is what gives more of that piece. Enos and kind of pains down the frizz cuz, my hair, I can kind of put so much in it for texture and sometimes pulls a little too frizzy for my liking. So there you go. I will show you all three directions, so you can see. That was the love Rev and if you have any questions or need any help, choosing hair products feel free to comment below or message me and I'd be happy to help find me over on Instagram. The Contoured Chemist: What's your fave way to add waves.... a flat iron, curling iron, or a wand?! I'd love to know!

Holly G: I curl with my flat iron, too, but my hair is so fine it doesn’t last more than a day. Thank you for this tutorial-super helpful.

Tracey Harris: Thank you for sharing how to use a flat iron to get those beachy fun waves and volume. I have never used a flat iron and one of my colleagues let me try her L'ange flat iron and it was amazing. This was several months ago and I have been thinking about getting one ever since, but as you said, we get stuck in a rut and stick with what we know are familiar with! After watching your video about how easy it is and the various curls and the longevity you get with your curls, I am finally going to get my own! woohoo! I have medium length hair with longer layers so I hope I get the same longevity because I only like to wash my hair twice a week and am a dry shampoo fan as well! I have been using some of the Monat products and LOVE them! I hope these products work well with the flat iron/straightener but I can't imagine they wouldn't. Thanks again for sharing your love for all things beauty!
