How To Flat Iron Hair And Maintain Volume!

Just because your are smoothing your hair straight with an iron, doesn't mean it has to be flat!

So I'm back with a redo of one of my oldest tutorials titled, how to flat iron your hair. The question I get all of the time when people are talking about wearing their hair straight is happing. I get volume with my hair with the flat iron or, if they've seen me with my hair and ass high styled it, and I used a flat iron that day they'll say well, how did you get so much volume or how did you get the little bend To it so here I am to tell you how to do that with a flat iron, a flat iron or straight hair doesn't have to mean like smooth and stuck to your head. You can get a ton of volume using a flat iron, and so let's get into the tutorial, so the flat iron I'm using today is by GHD. This is the classic styler. This is so old. I'Ve had this for years and use this when I work behind the chair, always my go-to, probably probably the flat iron I've used the longest. So I don't think you can go wrong with that, and then I put a quash uplifting foam in at my roots and then from about mid chef 2 ends. I sprayed Kevin Murphy's anti is an anti gravity spray. That'S like a wet spray to add volume to the rest of my hair and then glue it dries upside down and slept on. So, to start, I'm gon na divide my hair in half, I'm using a duckbill clip and I'll go around my temples and lift it up and then just clip it out of the way when you're flat ironing your hair. If you have thick hair, coarse, hair, curly hair, anything that will need like a great deal of attention on each section, just do yourself a favor and take small sections from the start. It may take an extra like 3 or 4 minutes, but it's totally worth it. If you want to have like a really smooth polished result, the product I've probably spent zero time talking about is a heat protective spray. But as my hair's gotten longer, I've started experimenting with a few, and I really like this GHD heat protectant spray um. So this is the same brand as that flat iron. I'M using and it's light it isn't a wet spray. So hold it far away and work with. You know each section: you're gon na work just do a light mist. Let it dry for a second and then Flatiron, so I'll apply this to each section, as I get my way to the top and to start over here, I don't need to put the flat iron and quite at my root, because my hair is already straight and My goal here is just kind of bend the ends under a little bit so I'll put the flat iron in horizontal turn my wrist just a slight bit and just add an even pace. Pull it right down that section and you'll see just by having my wrist bent as I was working my way down, instead of pulling it straight down, I'll get a nice little bend at the ends and that's all I'm going for just a little bit of event. I'M going to let down that top section I clipped off and then section from the top of my forehead cut, creating a mohawk section along the top clip that up and then we'll work on this next section as I'm getting closer to the top of my head. I'M going to bend my wrist a little bit more, so I didn't want to lose length by creating too much of a curl at the end and wanted that to be mostly straight just barely and what sort of aimed under. But for this I'm going to turn my wrist a little bit more, so it can kind of tuck in around that the jawline area. Let'S see what I mean here, so I've turned it quite a bit more, so I can get this entire C shape once I let it down see how it wants to bend under a little bit more and then, when I smooth it out it'll just kind of Naturally, beg it in that's the look I'm going for so not not. Stick straight, not boring a little bit of a bend around the ends, but I also like to do in the back since that's where the majority of the layering is in. My hair is change up the direction I'm holding the fine, so historically, I've been bending it just down going for kind of a uniform shape around the front, but in the back to encourage a little bit more variety of movement, I'm going to hold the butter and A little bit of an angle and just naturally bend my wrist, and this will encourage it to kick a little bit to my right, so it won't all day and kind of stack on top of one another and then on this side. I'Ll do the same thing. So it'll be encouraged to sort of aim to the left and that'll just create some movement and variety run back so with the top section letting that down establish my part. Do that final spritz of heat protector - and this is where you can encourage the volume. So this is the smallest section and notice that I'm holding the hair straight out from where it grows and I'll put the flat iron in very close to my root area and then lift it straight up. So you can get a ton of lift right there. If your hair hasn't been styled with a root lifter, which is what's also helping the lift right there, you can spray a little bit of hairspray and right at your root area. Maybe a flexible hold. Let it dry do not put your flat iron on wet product. On your hair and then do this routine and a little bit of that flexible, hold hairspray will help hold your root area up so pay attention to my arms. Here they are going straight up. Each section is going straight up with still a bend in my wrist. So it essentially has that C shape I like to take the sections around my face in smaller parts, so this will be the last piece that I do because I want this to be pretty straight. So it's not too bendy sort of into my eyes, but the section right behind it. I want to have a little bit more of a bend, so I'm just dividing it in half on an angle. Then I'll pick up that last section and this will go straight down with a little bit of a bend and then, while it's still hot I'll push it out of my face, I wanted to sort of softly bring my face without being too straight down right in The middle of my eyes so because my hair is quite dry, I, like finishing with an oil and the Bumble and Bumble hairdressers, invisible oil is perhaps the lightest oil I've ever used. So if you have really coarse hair, you might not see a great difference in using this, but if you have fine hair and you don't want the weight of an oil, but you want sort of the finished look of it. This hairdressers oil is perfect for that. So this is the end result. If you want a little extra volume, you can tease a little bit or you can just wear it. Smooth and straight you'll already have the volume from strategically using the Flatiron at your root area. So don't think straight. Hair equals flat hair. I hope these tips helped you and thanks for watching

Chrissie Des-Forges: Just bought my first set of straighteners and before I use them I needed to know how to have volume and hair to have a slight bend inwards at ends. This video was such a great help and the hints and methods of how to use the straighting tool was exceptional. Fantastic help. Practice makes perfect and here I go ......

Pamela Harrison: Loved this tutorial! I never flat iron my hair because I am someone who needs volume to balance my face shape. This gave me great inspiration to give it another try

Megan Harp: Recently purchased my second GHD iron, LOVE it! My hair is so thick and coarse, seems to work best for me! Your hair style looks so cute, been awhile since I've actually straightened mine.....think I'll try your technique today! TFS!!!

amy1651: I loved this. I need to flat iron my hair on hair washing day because of the texture, but day one I always do it way too stick straight! ||| so because of this I would love you to do this on someone who DOESN'T have naturally straight hair so that I can see you doing it from the root!

Shelby Brauer: Was just trying to achieve this look this morning! Will have to try this out tonight! xo

blondwiththewind: I love the lift you can get with blow-drying "upside down".  The way your hair is at the start of this video is basically how I've worn mine for years!!!  (a great cut helps with that as well :)............but even though I'm "all thumbs" with styling my own hair:  I have a new flat iron and I'm going to try this out.  Great style achieved at the end of this video.

DaniiBeke: Another great vid! I love that your explanations are always so easy to understand and follow! I'll have to try this out soon!

Frazzled but Fabulous Beauty: Thank you for sharing! I can’t wait to try out these tips!

Juliana Fonseca: Very Helpful!! Thanks for sharing your tips!!!

Jessica Renee: Just as a side note: you aren't supposed to comb/brush/touch your hair after using heat. Let your hair cool first so frizz does not set in and the style can set in naturally.

Danielle Clark: Love this! So gorgeous ❤️

Teri Davis: How do you maintain the volume throughout the day, let alone overnight?! I feel like when I've just done my hair, I'll have good volume, but an hour later, it's gone completely flat again. :/ Any thoughts?

Madams.59: Can't believe how long your hair is now. It seems like it grew really fast. You're so lucky because I can tell you have tons of hair and it also looks like it has a little natural lift to it. How would you say or describe the cut, textured, point cut or not etc., I love it.

Just Alessa: VERY helpful!! Thank you!

lil Ray: very helpful video. all of your tips worked...thank you!

Claire Bolding: Try the Kenra heat spray. It even helps my style stay longer.

Tanis Gentle: What about if your hair is really long so the weight pulls it down? Are there any additional steps or products, or would you suggest cutting interior layers, or cutting weight out of the bottom?

H K: That's how I flat iron my hair too. Except mine is short with layers. I have a lot of hair too.

SaturdayMorningBikeRides: Will this work for somebody who has very flat and fine hair to begin with? Your hair looks like it has plenty of volume to start, whereas mine is flat against my head all the time

Adriana Hargrave: Thanks for the tips! You have the best hair!!

Tazbocat: thank you! great video.

Lauren: Hey Kate was wondering if you could do a video on how you grew your hair long ? And any hair growth tips ? Thank you x

Janna S: please put products you use in your description box.

Jenna Gray: If you could help me out with this little dilemma of mine that'd be great! So I have naturally curly hair, not spirals but definitely not waves. I want to be able to curl my hair once in awhile but since I have to straighten it first, it never works, so I try brow drying it with a brush to be to the point where it's not straight but not too curly to curl, and it still won't hold the curl! How ironic right.

Jennifer Fey: Kate - Where can I find the combs that you use in your tutorials?

Amanda Myers: You look like Jennifer Aniston with your hair like that! Love it (:

candie crowther: What is the best thing to put in my hair to help hold my curl with my curling iron . After few hours the curls fall out.

Analika Singh: thanks it worked

Jamie Garcia: your hair is amazing!

Preeti Khatri: great tips..can you please share your lipstick shade

김민지: 멋져요~ 고마워요!

Tanis Gentle: You are not “bending your wrist” at all. What matters is establishing the bend in the strand from root to end and how you direct the flat iron. Is also important to keep the strand bent until it cools. You could also discuss what “before” products do more in-depth. Not entirely helpful.

April Lemons: Kate, who colors your hair? I'm in Creedmoor which is outside of Raleigh and Durham. Also, does someone else cut your hair or do you cut your own hair?

airbrne: great job
