Mushroom Brown Hair Trend | Formulation For The Perfect Ashy Brown

My client wanted to go darker and stay ashy. The mushroom brown color can be such a hard color to create cause the ashiness can grab and cause the hair to look muddy. I was able to create the perfect ashy brown that my client was so happy about.

Formulation and application included in the video.

If you are wanting a mushroom brown hair color, i think i came up with the perfect formulation: keep watching to see what colors I mix together to create this beautiful look. Okay. So when my client had set up this appointment, she said that she wanted to go darker, and so I grabbed a few things thinking that maybe that meant she wanted to go like darker to her natural color. Well, after talking to her a little bit, she said that any year from now she wants to go like brighter blonde again. So I told her that I wouldn't recommend going like darker like her natural color, which is like a level three or so because it's only six months of or six inches of grow out a year from now. You know on average, and so by the time her hair grows out. Six inches would just be like down to here, and then all of this is still gon na. Have that old, one that had been there, that we colored darker over so we're gon na have to lighten all this up, and this has already really been heavily bleached. So I told her I wouldn't recommend going too dark if we're gon na relighting that up, because it will be too damaging on her hair. So today we're just going to go probably like a level six, seven dark that way it wouldn't. She wants to go lighter again. It will be a lot easier of a transition. This is what I'm using to tone her down, I'm using mostly ashy colors and then just a little bit of that 5-n just to kind of balance the tones, because I will say that this is my new favorite line to do a route shuttle with, because it's It really kicks out the brass, but that 6 1 2, if the overtones it goes really really blue. So adding that neutral will just kind of balance it out a little bit. I'M applying this darker shade to blend with her roots, and I'm just applying this. Basically, right where the line of demarcation is, and I'm just swiping it through her mid shaft, not going down too far, one thing that she said she doesn't really care about is having like brighter around the face. So I'm not really paying too close of attention to making sure that she has more of a grown-up money piece look. However: I am kind of angling, the darker color down a little bit further in the crown area. You can see a little bit better how I'm dropping the color down a little bit further in the back. That way, she will have a slightly brighter appearance towards the front, but it's not going to be like a definite money piece where it's like right about the forehead and we're just gon na preserve a little bit of that brightness a little bit more around the face. After I apply the color at the roots, I'm gon na go through with my comb and blend the color down through her ends. It'S not gon na go all the way down through her ends, but it's just gon na kind of melt. The color through the mid-shaft. This is just gon na help. The color have a nicer blend. I really hate when I see a root shadow and somebody just applies it really harshly at the roots, and then they don't like blend the color down. I feel like a root shadow is to be really really soft, just kind of really diffuse the line and blend the tones together. So I go through make sure you comb it through the ends. Don'T use too fine of a comb because that's gon na actually strip the color, but if you use something a little bit more of a wide tooth, that's gon na help melt the colors together without pulling the color off of the actual hair. And then, once I dragged the color down and melt it together, I always like to go through and just take larger panels and bring the color down quite a bit further through the ends. This is just going to create nice ribbons throughout the hair for added dimension. This is the formulation that I'm using for her lightest shade again, I'm just using a little bit of the 5n, because I want to add that depth into there. However, I don't want to go too dark and I do need to add a little bit of neutral. So it doesn't grab too blue too ashy to gray. We just want it nice and cool. I just applied her ends at the shampoo bowl and she sat for about 10 minutes or so, but look how ashy that looks. I can already tell when I can see how ashy that her hair is grabbing. It'S gon na, be so pretty here's the finished result. Her hair looks so pretty. I love how cool it looks, but it doesn't look over toned. It has a nice color to it. Without appearing too ashy and too drab here's her hair when we took a picture outside it still looks really really pretty. Thank you guys so much for watching that. Platinum Chaos: Wow! I love her hair color. I'm doing this to myself but using levels 10 (ends), 9 (midshaft) and 8 (roots). I'm not a professional but I've been learning what to do from professionals on YouTube. Thank you to all of the professional hairstylists teaching people what to do so we don't mess up our hair. I'm using Sally's ION mushroom blonde hair color series in 8MB light mushroom blonde and 9MB very light mushroom blonde. I also use ION 9NN Very Light Intense Blonde, 9A Very Light Ash Blonde and 8A Light Ash Blonde. I learned to use 1 inch of the 9NN Very Light Intense Blonde so I won't go too ashy. I use the 9NN Very Light Intense Blonde in areas I have natural silver virgin hair coming through. After bleaching my whole head in search of platinum blonde (which I feel looks unnatural) I started adding in depth at the root with level 8 because I learned I'm a natural level 5, so I use a 30 volume developer to lift me to level 8 at the root. I use ash base (blue) to tone the underlying pigment. It works! Instead of killing my whole head of hair with bleach I'm slowing adding in levels 8 and 9, then I can pop in some lighter level 10 streaks. I learned all of this from people like you (Kristi Jennings) and Elle Bangs and Guy Tang! Thank you!!!

Ciara Chamberlain: This is gorgeous! I truly appreciate the the formula and application was provided as I just spent a LOT of money in a balayage that I am not too fond of. So glad this was done on grown out/balayaged hair. Love these videos!

Victoria Paul: So amazing. This is exactly what I want for my hair. Beautiful!

D J: Thanks for sharing this video! Really helpful! I've just dyed my hair a dark ash brown (but almost looks like my natural black colour) and want to go for something lighter than my current shade but darker than the one in your video. What formula should I use to achieve a darker brown mushroom? I'm planning on trying out bayalage at home and then tone. Should I use less of the 5-0 and more blonde shade or the other way around since my base is dark? Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!!

Tricia Grubbs-Thrift: Absolutely stunning! I recently used Malibu C CPR to remove unwanted color pigment from my hair after a color took too dark. It generally will leave you with a lighter brassy shade that you simply re-color to the desired level and tone. Problem I’m having is I’ve also got highlights so I’ve got about a level 7 (orangy) root with level 9 (yellow) highlights. Most shades I’m choosing for the root -to counteract the orange- seems to leave me with a little green tinge... especially if it rinses over the highlights (which I understand the yellow highlights + obviously the blue in the formula = greenish & kinda makes me think I’ve got a more orangy/yellow root..?.). I’ve been trying the colors with a blue/violet base thinking I was on the right track ‍♀️ Watching your video, the info about adding the N to keep things balanced and keep the 6.12 from over toning too much blue.... made me think this might possibly be the trick for me..?... My ultimate goal (eventually) is to go back to more blonde -or really heavily highlighted- once my hair can take it. I can never be blonde to the root cause it washes me out. So I’m generally a dark root (level6) with heavy highlights.... always on the cool side —what a battle to keep that up.. lol So I’m in love with the fact of possibly pulling the color in this video off until I decide to highlight again down the road. Do you think this will work for me with the situation I’ve got going on here?.... any info will be appreciated. You’re very talented! And I look forward to any help you may offer.

Lisa B: This is beautiful Kristi! I am naturally a 6/7 ash, graying now. Currently do an 8 natural ash base with highlights. I'm thinking this would work for me, maybe do a 6 or 7 N instead of 5. If I wanted to maintain this look would you recommend periodic highlights or just let them grow out?

ALLA SRBVCH: This video just saved me from a hair crisis! thank you SO much Kristi!

D Smith: This looks beautiful! Awesome job!

Katia Mariucci: hello! I had an ombré which has been overtoned and got super muddy dark so i bleached my hair and ended up with a very orangy level 7/8 (it's way brassier than your model!) Would that formula cover up the orange? Also .. can I use igora vibrance cream developper 6vol instead of gel developper? Thank you very much and keep up the good work! Love your videos!
