All about black hair in Japan!

So casually, I think, a magical, black and beautiful video. So thank you for tuning in first of all, I want to apologize. I'Ve been quite busy, but I do appreciate you guys tuning in and all of your positive warm comments and questions. I'M working on getting to them, so thank you so much for for just participating and being a part of my channel. I really appreciate that. I really appreciate it. Yes, anyways very this video. Okay, I'm sure you guys have already noticed the big change in my hair, for once in my life, I decided to wear my natural hair. You know, I know I look like female Tarzan, but that's okay, kind of loopy, because my hair we're not in a wig. Yes, so now you guys know and not fall under mainly, as I'm sure you guys can tell by now. My channel is about Japan and I don't really want to steer away from what I originally intended. But surprisingly, my hair has become a big topic of discussion. All of these different kinds of hair comments have left me thinking. I should make a video about black hair in Japan, so that is what I Wednesday say. So, first things first a little bit about me. I am natural. I don't use any heat, I don't use any chemicals, and I've been this way for about 10 years now. Next year is my 10 year anniversary. So most of the time, if my hair, it doesn't look like this cuz. This is like no diet. No cutting no heat, if you guys see my hair any other way. No, it's away! It'S a wig. I wear wigs and waited companies. Please slide up in my DMS and let me know if you try to sponsor your homegirl. Ok but anyway I love changing my hair style. I like wearing short, elaborate long, a little on it with black color crating red occasionally. But I love my hair so much. I don't want to damage it by all that treatment, so I'd rather just wear all it. It'S really that simple, it's not because I want to be white, it's not because I hate my hair, because obviously I love this like I actually lived through this, like you see how healthy my hair is. This is intentional. Okay, I care about the air. I care about my hair and that's why I don't worry about very much because I love changing my hair and I don't want to compromise the health of my hair for the sake of a style like I mentioned before. Today'S topic is about black hair. What do I mean by black hair? I mean afro textured hair based on the hair type track, which is a picture here, hair types that constitute as three and four three being like tends to be mixed with black and poor being like full-blooded black. I am so sorry if you are not black and you don't have our hair texture, just wait to the next video or watch this video if you're interested in learning more but sorry, this video is not working about you today. Next, we're going to talk about first impressions: okay, first impressions. When I first came to Japan and I saw a black person, what was their hair like there, isn't one given style that everyone wears okay, people, I've seen people with dreads dress is very popular here. I'Ve seen people with natural hair, I've seen people with relaxed hair and I've seen people who have totally shaven and often are doing that whole length shades. Look. I don't want to seem like I'm being smug. The hair that I see here seems kind of unkempt, with the exception of a few people. Of course, I seems like to me at least that people here both wear their hair and, like really stylish styles, I mean I'm guilty as well as I've mentioned in previous videos. When I go to my school, I wear my natural hair, but I wear it in a style that is very little maintenance that I can wear for the whole week. Another thing I've noticed was that the first impressions is no one really wear turbans or hair wraps like at all, which is very weird because in the state people wrap their hair up all the time, and I used to do the same when I used to wrap My hair up, but people here, don't really do that so yeah next is the Japanese perspective, the Japanese perspective from the time that had been here too now what I've heard from Japanese people in the experiences I have a job people based upon my hair. Most people assume that your hair is real, a lot of people assume inherits and not extensions, and even if you're wearing a wig or a weave or some kind of extension, people will assume that that's your real hair. A lot of people are very naive when it comes to your hair, but I'll change. My cell, all the time like I mentioned before I changed my style up all the time. I changed myself from short to long to really the straight and if I go to the committee they'll be like. Oh, you cut your hair, always change your hair and I'll, be like it's a wig but they're, not dumb, and when I say they're, not dumb, I mean the first day of school. I went to school with a big pointy right, like you, just put your hair in a bun right. You put your hair in a bun, and you just attach the point out on this big fluffy fold until I love that borders College really stylish, but I wore to school this one day and one of the kids was like. That'S a wig, that's a wig! Oh, no, no, you said, show me and I was like barely but they're not stupid. My hair has been punched, but it's only been touched twice and let me explain the first time was by my principal. I was wearing that same fake, ponytail and walking, and she just reaches into my ponytail. He feels it I'm just like why, but I mean she's a Loki, my boss, my dear the second time I was at the club, I was wearing an afro wig, really cute. After away and this girl had really long hair and she used a chopstick and put her hair in a bun with the chopstick and she was like, let me show you know, but she was going in for the kill and she brought the end of my wig And I wasn't home, but then they caught me on stage like who dodged a bullet if you've got hair, that's not naturally straight people assume that you have a perm as well at people. People didn't quite understand that I, my hair, is my hair grows out of my skull. This way like this, this is my natural texture, because people in Japan, some people, do have this texture of hair, but it's a perm and a lot of the Japanese perspective. Now, for maintenance tips first is to be self-sufficient, be self-sufficient, meaning you're styling. If someone is consistently doing your hair in the West and you want to come to Japan, try your best to wean off of them wean off of their dependency. So you can do your hair yourself, like now, I'm a 100 % independent. Like I do everything I wash my hair. I cut my hair. I do everything by myself and that's the best way to be because there are a lot of resources here. So it's better to be able to be self-sufficient and to be able to get along on your own next is to adjust to the climate. Japan has intense weather, the summers are hot and humid. I wore this twist out in the summer. It would be an afro by now it's really humid and in the winters it's dry and windy, so just be aware of the weather and adjust accordingly. Next is to stock up on products. If you are a product junkie, you will struggle here, but if you have those key products you can get and bring with you you'll be so good. I am still using products that I brought from the states. They have hair products here, of course, but those hair products are meant more so for people with silkier textures. So if you have a kinky, curly texture of hair, it is better that you bring your own products and less is more if you can find a few key products that work really good for you, just stick with those and you'll be fine. I promise next tip is to relax, relax and what I mean by relaxed is that here in Japan, people are not as strict with hair. There are more strict with dyeing and they are without your styling. So if you have a dread or if you have box braids or if you have even a twist outlet a curly, afro textured style, people aren't going to tell you no, you can't wear that. You know in the States people tend to discriminate with more afro. Centric styles than they do with other styles, but you're totally okay, here so relax and feel free to experiment like I'm thinking of doing many twists or maybe box, braids or some kind of style. I'M on my hair - I don't know yet, but I've got that afraid of here and you do as well. If you're, coming with three or four type hair, you've got the freedom to explore and express yourself freely so take advantage that when you're here, but that is it for this video. Thank you for tuning in. If you like this video, then like it. If you want to see more, then hit subscribe and become part of the YouTube fan, but thank you so much for tuning in and I'll see you in the next one bye my baby

Ifreke Le: I went to japan from dec 1st to dec 18th 2018. My hair is natural. Always in a fro. I had a family that was curious about me, so they moved their table closer to talk to me and my friends. The cute kids were so nice and well behaved. And the little girl asked if she could touch it. I don’t usually let people touch my hair but I felt they needed to know that everyone had different type of hair. The girl asked if I get perms to make my hair so curly she was shocked to know my hair naturally grows that way. Great experience. Would love to go back to japan.

strandedcaveman: I think it's safe to say chocolate geisha is a national treasure

Alex Nizamis: Those were wigs? Wow they look so natural! Great vid btw

cleoclaus69: Your hair is so pretty! Low key I was hoping you were natural, and I was so pleasantly surprised that you are able to keep it so healthy in Japan, even with the lack of resources. Nice video, and very informative.

imamonstar: Maybe if you are in an English teaching job (or something else where a foreigner is expected) your hair won't be an issue, but having afro-textured hair is definitely an issue at times. Since people here generally have the same sort of hair and features, hair is often considered part of a uniform or dress code and you having totally differently textured hair may not be taken into consideration. It really depends. Also, you're lucky to only have had people touch your hair twice. I've had kids run at me and shove their hands in my hair, random people visiting the office touching my hair, people on the train... like, why???

Ninna Faye: My hair got damaged in japan bcuz of the harsh water. And there were a few locals who braided black hair but most of my black hair experience was wearing wigs and OMG sis this one old cute Japanese woman came up to me at a market and touched my hair and said it was cute lol she loved it ❤️ but getting braids in Okinawa was expensive! No wonder my hair died I couldn’t protect it as much because paying $240 for a style that should cost $100-$180 is ridiculous. And the weather definitely didn’t help black hair there. I had a cute twist out one day and walked the dog around the damn corner and it was a damn Afro by the time i was done AND IT WASNT THAT HOT with a breeze.

Emily von Richter: your eyes are so pretty, it's like they're glowing

M: This natural style is way sexier than the wigs. Suits you very well

Flamboyant Potato: Ohhh nooo girl if your wig ever gets snatched please make like an awkward moments in japan video and include a story of it, it'd be legendary.

The Dreaming Beauty: Omg I had no idea you were wearing wigs But I love your hair girl!

red hair halojeff: is there even a black salon in japan? cause if i were to have dreads and i live in japan i wouldnt really trust someone who doesnt know how to twist hair.

UFBMusic: Your hair looks amazing! I would go with it if I were you.

Ai Ai: You're so pretty!! And you're living in my dream! I want to teach in Japan I love your channel. As a black girl, I want to watch your stories and your experiences in Japan so that I can get the idea of how my future would be like there. But mine would be 10x more funny since I'm Muslim at the same time lol. I am so glad your channel exists its too useful

Faith Mwaura: Thanks for this! I've personally decided to chop my hair and just keep it real short, as I couldn't keep maintaining it because of lack of funds and time, and I genuinely hated the amount of effort it required to keep it healthy. I loved braids, but my hair between braids I just didn't like. I didn't know a lot of protective styles or hair techniques at all, and from what little I knew of weaves and wigs I hadn't liked, so I decided my best option was to get a buzz cut. Part of it was that I genuinely did NOT like the way it looked, and I hope to overcome this by age and looking up techniques that won't drive me up the wall. Wraps is something that has interested me, and something I want to look into, for example. Keeping it simple and straightforward was something I wanted. I've now been experimenting with products that'll actually keep my hair hydrated (a struggle) for the past few years, and my biggest complaint is that I wished companies would make trial/travel-sized versions of their products so I'm not stuck with some huge bottle that I'll feel obligated to finish but have been stuck with for nearly a year. Like seriously, is that too hard to ask? Do you have any suggestions?

_still_somewhere _: You're a gem girl, keep up the great content and positive attitude ❤

Phire Tiger: Not all full "black" ppl have four type hair. Biracial ppl can have type four hair and ppl with both Black parents can have 3 type or even 2 type hair. Just for those who are not Black. Just like shades our hair come in all types. Love the video though!

singergrrl77: Your hair is so beautiful anyway you wear it. I love it how it is in this video. Thank you for giving info and context. You’re so funny!!

Pink Riot: Congrats on getting now 12k subs! Your hair is gorgeous. I wore protective styles a lot too before I decided to get microlocs.

Olatunde Fajimi: Interesting video idea and good execution. It's good to hear that Japanese welcome all sorts of hair styles without the push-back that they might get in their home country. Has anyone thought about bringing in black-specific hair products in bulk into Japan and becoming a one-stop-shop? Would there be restrictions to that for security, or other, reasons?

lary.: Just began watching your videos and it's so fun to see and hear your perspective on so many different things! Can't wait to hear more about your experiences! :D You should definitely do more TL;DR's like this!

KhenedeBornAgain: I freaking love that you rock your natural hair in Japan, educate them beauty standards Queen

anavan7: @Chocolate Geisha ディドラ Can you make a video about the differences about living spaces like furniture, stove, fridge, storage in Japan vs the States? Maybe even a video about Japanese aesthetics?

Nat Qi: Omg i was just binging your videos after finding you today for the first time and you post just now! Loving the content <3

A. Dara: Amazing video as always!!!!I love your content, it’s so useful and fun! I’m hoping to go to Japan someday lol, so your videos have been so helpful! And congrats on hitting 10k!!

charles thomas: This is a huge concern of mine moving to Japan as I also wear my natural in two strand twists. My hair needs to be redone about every 3 weeks. From researching, I've only seen a few places (mostly located in Tokyo) that specialize in African textured hair... Any insight on this?

moonfairymomo: You’re at 14k subscribers now! Congrats I’ve been thinking about going to Japan in 2019. Because I’ve been wanting to meet my friends face to face for many years now Either way, I really liked this video!

Brittney Thierjung: Dear Chocolate-san! Please do an episode about teaching your students in japan. And another episode about the stuff you like to do in Japan. Going to the city. Going to the movies. Whatever. Also, another episode about who you hang out with. Other black people. Other Japanese friends. And maybe like a shopping video and show us around the malls. C: please and thank you!

lauriply: Loved this vid so interesting! I'm so happy you get to wear your hair however you want in Japan and no one cares :)

Ariel Greenaway: Thanks so much for sharing! I’m moving to Japan in August and I’m trying to think of how much product to bring with me to Japan- how many of each product would you suggest? Or just how many products did you bring with you? Again thank you so much for sharing!

Sara Phillips: I live in Japan as well. The best products for our hair in Japan need to be highly hydrating. It’s either incredibly dry or incredibly humid here. My go to products are Amical conditioner. If the product says it’s Hawaiian try it. Protective styles are a must during humid weather. Apple cider vinegar, coconut oil, avocado oil and jojoba oil can be bought here basically at the same prices here as the states. Learn to make your own pre-poo. Don’t buy a Japanese shampoo. Be ready for your hair routine and needs to dramatically change. Your hair may need products that didn’t work well with your hair back home. I went from never using coconut oils and gels to absolutely needing coconut oil (a heavier oil) and making my own gel.

blessedwithcolour : I love your energy! You natural hair looks really long and healthy too✨

illoe: i dont even have that hair type im just here bc this is so interesting and youre such a good teachER

Laitalafraise: I loved this video! Thank you! ❤ It was very interesting. The way japanese people assume automatically that straightened hair is the black person's real hair is surprising. Here in France, it's the opposite. People will assume it's a wig when it's straight because black women in France usually wear their hair "natural" (in braids) and don't use relaxers as much as english-speaking Blacks.

Max: I just found your channel and I’m In love!!! Your content is amazing and so is your personality!!

Dragon goes to japan: Great job on the content Keep up the great work Its good to find other people talking about Japan New supporter of your work

Marie AdoariT: YES ! I always wanted to have an idea of how I could keep up with my hair in Japan lol

Mya Peccia: Your hair looks so beautiful and healthy. Looks great this way sis

descaro: girl you look damn cute!!!

Jaora: Great video. Your hair is fabulous. I wish I watched this two days ago. I wouldn't have stressed needlessly. I wore my hair in an afro on the train the other day on the way to karaoke and I thought everyone would be staring at me. But no one even cared.

Kayla S J: I wish I had found this two years ago when I was studying abroad in Japan. I had to ween myself off my hairstylist before I left and brought a big bottle of shampoo and conditioner. Then I found out they have some of the same brands there too (in Tokyo) like Garnier and Pantene and Herbal Essences. I tried a sample of a japanese branded shampoo and conditioner and tried their cameila oil on my hair and that actually helped my hair. I went back for a second time for vacation and found some hair cream and hair milk from the brand Oshimatsubaki. Its a yellow bottle with red flowers. It makes my hair so soft and I have 4c hair. My hair can't handle heavy products, so the japanese hair cream i bought was nice and light and was a good match for my hair. I just use whatever works because a lot of products geared towards naturalistas are just marketing stunts to get more money and for people to buy more product. They also have some pretty good body oils and creams too and they sell vaseline! So if i end up living to japan i won't really have to bring too much except makeup (yay for fenty!) and shoes because i have big feet lol I made sure to try everything (or as many things as possible).

Netta G: New to your channel and I love it you have such a positive vibe to you. How long did it take you to become fluent in Japanese?

Simi M.: Love your energy I’ll be moving to japan for a year in a few months and I wanted to know if there’s a place in Japan / Tokyo where you can buy good weave bundles. Any info would be great! Thank you x

Orionis X: Just found your channel today with my Scottish husband... I'm very intrigued of channels to do with people living in different countries, since I'm an American (New York) living in Scotland. I had a giggle from this, since my latin genes gave me big curly hair.. Believe it or not, curly hair isn't so common in Scotland! Weird, right? So I can relate to people constantly bringing attention to your hair lol. Subbed!

Aleasia: It’s good to know I don’t have to worry about the discrimination when it comes to hair. I’m thinking about going into the JET program when I graduate and that was one of the things I was worried about.

Roberto Heard: Very informative video and loving your natural hair like I'm ready to fight your man.lol Questions: 1. Since you had to become independent from your American stylist, how good have you become at braiding hair? 2. Can you braid others just as well? And what opportunities exists for those who can? 3. Has anyone else approached you; not like me, but strictly for braids.lol

slaï cerise: You are a gem: smart & funny!!! I love love your videos. Merci pour ces quelques minutes d'humour.

Hannah Bruno: omg your natural hair is beautiful <3

Mrs. LJ: I am cracking up! I love that you’re a real one...even on the other side of the KML

LonelyHotPocket: Omg so proud you don't use chemicals or heat on your hair. it's so gorgeous : ) love u!!

Dee George: Love your YT channel! So informative and entertaining. You are so pleasant to watch!

Annabeth Chase: I just found and you have such cool content, I love it!! Can't wait to see more of your videos!

Tequila Co.: Since I am staying in Japan for the next 4 months, I was wondering if you could let me know about getting my hair done? I currently have senegalese braids but I know they can't last forever. I usually wear ponytails like the synthetic ones, but I wasn't sure if I could take them with me so I didn't :( Do you ship your wigs here or did you already bring them?? I'd love some tips from you! :)

niwaallen1: I've been doing my own hair for about 2-3 years now, same as you, no heat, just weaves and protective styles because I love grey hair (grey/white hair anime characters) , sounds weird but I love it but I am not dying my own hair lol.

Ashley Walker: Girl, shout out to ya editing. You had me dying the whole video!

Aria M.: And guuuurl that style suits you look mad cute

Ieromi Dot Reads: I don't have afro hair, but I enjoy listening to your videos because of personality and the hype you share :)

Aria M.: Great video!! Keep it up, and its fine that you can't upload that often when you are busy~

YanoNick: Love the channel and hair. You are awesome, don't change... too much =D

Elyse Elyse: I hope I can bring my Shea moisture collection because I’ll definitely be needing it

Issa H: Your hair is so pretty ❤️❤️

Mika: Just seeing your channel and your hair and you are gorgeous...Live your best life in Japan!

Saxito Pau: Very nice informative vid. Like your series thus far. If only I had enough hair to try hairstyles with!... (started balding at 21, never had an afro or dreadlocks; never will )

Alfie Bones: Your hair looks awesome ❤️

Dynamo7: I applied to the jet program, so I will be living in Japan for the next year. The one thing I was worried about is taking my hair to the barber.

Krista Johnson: Wow, this was interesting. So I was watching some anime-type shit and there was a deeply weird and obviously inaccurate afro representation in it and I thought to myself: oh god, Japanese people have no idea how type 4 hair works at all do they, it must be hard to be black in Japan... My Chinese boyfriend with 2B hair is like IT'S SO CURLY HELP ME, (I have type 3A) but he refuses anything but a shampoo conditioner in one rofl

ʇɹɐǝɥ ɐɹʇɔǝןǝ: odd request but can you do a video on different animes you watch if you do

baby Cool kid: would summer weather in japan be like summer weather in miami? same levels of humidity and heat?

MsBloo: Congrats on reaching 10k! Well 11k now! You deserve it P..S. YOUR HAIR....YOUR HAIIIRRRR IS GORGEOUSSSSS

POY: I have 4c hair type. Your hair is pretty. I always do my hair. I had someone braid my hair once, I looked pretty but my hairline . So I went back to doing it my way. I'm going to join the Wig club too.

Raja: I'm not surprised people wanna know. Whenever I go to Japan this was my top thing. My hair and how I was gonna take care of it in Japan. Most likely I'll probably just bring enough products or use all natural stuff in Japan.

Abigail: You deserve so many more subs!!!
