How To Dye Your Hair Red Without Bleach

Get so many questions on how I dye my hair red without bleaching at first and I'm going to show you how my hair naturally is a very dark brown. I use L'Oreal High color in magenta, with 30 volume developer, just keep in mind, I'm not a hairdresser. I'Ve been dyeing my hair red for almost eight years. I just know what works for me. Just follow the instructions on the actual tube, but it's one part of the dye and then one part of the developer. I always start off with my root and then I work my way from the front to the back for the ends. I mix it with a 20 volume developer or sometimes a 10, depending on how much lighter I want the ends to be, and then I just lather it all throughout my hair, I let it sit for about 40 minutes and then this time you can take all The hair dye off of your hairline and then I wash it off and honestly. This is how it turns out every single time. I do have an in-depth tutorial on YouTube. Just search up my name:

Cymon Tolbert: Hi! I love your video. I am cosmetologist and I would just like to let you know that the bleach is mixed in with the color and that’s why it comes out so bright because it lightens and deposits color so your not mislead by the packaging. I also don’t recommend putting 10 volume on your ends anymore because as I said there is bleach mixed in and you’re slowly destroying the ends of your hair if you would still like to do this exact same color on you ends I recommend 5volume instead of 10 or 20.

Finding Mania: "I don't bleach" proceeds to use developer

kenny: still waiting for the tutorial on how to achieve this look WITHOUT bleaching

rowan: "I'll show you how I get bright red without bleach!" *proceeds to pull out a lifting hair dye containing bleach* (as an ex sally's employee i knew what was coming before that box ever hit the screen lol) But regardless, the color looks gorgeous on you and your hair is pretty damn healthy! ❤️ Edit: To be specific, no the color she uses doesn't contain bleach, but to get hair to lift that many levels, it often takes a higher volume developer alongside it and contains ingredients with similar oxidation processes meant to damage hair less but when done over itself on a regular basis, can leave your hair with similar results to bleach and color separately. Hope this clears things up! Sorry for any confusion with the way I worded things.

Noe Dactyl: I love how the title says "WITHOUT BLEACH" and then she bleaches it with bleach

Thiccybrains &salty maru: Hey love I'd send out a PSA to anyone that has used henna dye (metallic salts) you CANNOT use this. Ammonia and metallic salts do not mix and will react disastrously and dangerously. This product doesn't use bleach but it does use ammonia so do a patch test on your skin prior and a hair test on a small portion of hair that isn't visible when ur hair is worn down just in case. I'd hate for someone to not know and see this and try it and end up with severe burns and hair melting.

Alyssa 27: The developer is still lightening your hair it’s just dyeing and lifting at the same time

RS: "bleaching" refers to Lightener mix with developer, typically the first step to acheive this look. Otherwise the pigment will deposit on top of the natural color, making it dark red. To get this bright red colour you need to lighten the natural hair and then deposit red pigment. hilift colour when mixed with developer will lift and deposit pigment in one step (so you can avoid the 'bleaching' step) developer is not bleach, it is hydrogen peroxide in varying strengths 5 volume is 1.5% peroxide and 40 volume is 12% peroxide. Lightener is a mixture of persulfate and alkaline salts which aids the developer in oxidizing the melanin in the hair. Manic Panic and Pravana are colour brands that don't require developer, but you have to bleach the hair first with lightener if you want that bright vivid red.

SheaButta_88: This brand is so gently on your hair.I kept my hair dyed for two years.I never experienced any breakage or damage.I let the color grow out and it turned a very nice penutbutter brown. I got so many compliments on both colors.

RC: SUCH a good product! I used it for years when I first started dying and moved to other colors but no one believed it was just developer haha. It’s such an amazing product. I’d mix one of the reds with the magenta cause I like the pink. You can play with highlight or different effects too which is so fun. I love this product so much for when i first started out.. I don’t think any other brand compares for darker hair and safer results!

Angel_: Been using this for years! It’s fantastic. Looks great on you! Hugs✨

Angela Fleming: Gorgeous. I miss my red hair, but I was tired of my bathroom looking like a crime scene. I love the brand you use as well.

Dawn Becraft: YEEEES!!! I have used and loved this hair dye for years!! I have some sort of allergy to bleach so it is so nice to be able to do something fun to my dark hair :)

Mpho: They're cooking you in the comment section babe

Auroranne Corinne Renée: To reduce damage, I would use 10 or 20 volume for the length of your hair and any other pre-dyed parts. Hi Color is meant for darker hair and uses more pigment and lightening agents, and in combination with the 30 volume contributes to the brighter color and lightening of the natural hair. But this can still cause damage later on because of the amount of lightening it’s doing. 10 volume is used to simply deposite color, thus brightening what already exists on your hair.

Alexandria Farkas: The developer is what makes the bleach work. It lightens your hair. That’s why for example if you put a manic panic bright color on brown hair it doesn’t come out a bright color but kind of overlays your dark hair. Adding the developer lightens while the color deposits onto your hair. It’s basically bleaching you hair…basically. But instead of making it blonde or white or weird orange you’re making it red…

Cheryl-ann Diamond: That dye is good! ❤ I remember using it in 2010 when the Rihanna red was all the rage and it worked a treat. Just a word of caution: if you find the red fading on the lengths - please DO NOT apply the L’Oréal to them again to top up, you will fry your hair as it’s already been lightened. Find a suitable caring semi perm/ colour conditioner and only redo your dark roots with the high lift colour. I found out the hard way

Reyna Thomas: I love this but I got a quick tip! I’ve bee relaxing my hair for 14yrs so this is a must for any chemical treatments, dying included and helps with clean up! Use Vaseline, sunflower oil or olive oil long the edges, covering your forehead, nape of the neck down and completely over the ears. This helps dyes from staying on your skin and protecting it from harsh chemicals that can damage it or hurt you!

Amelia Strickland: Beautiful! Until I turned solid grey, I too dyed my hair red. Love it.

Amnesty Frederickson: I just want to say this if you are coloring completely virgin hair from the roots to the tip you want to start at the ends of your hair process that for 20 to 30 minutes and then do your roots for 10 to 15 otherwise your roots can come out way lighter than the rest of your hair because the heat from your scalp will process it faster it is also the same thing when you bleach your hair

s love: Omg... I went to high school with this girl ! . It's great to see she's still doing her thing !! ♡

Fruit Jelly: Another thing you can do so the dye doesn’t stain your forehead is get vasoline and just rub it where your hair and forehead is and behind your ears I always do that and it helps a a lot but just take it off after your done

Scrilla Bee: I used to do this same exact thing when I had red hair. I was amazed at how low maintenance it was. I’m surprised to see someone else finding this out! Your hair is beautiful❤

Rachel RoseLynn: I used to use this for my hair! Would always go with just any version of the red I was feeling that month, and it turned out so cool. Like fire with a bunch of different shades of red mixed in

Melody’s Melody: I think when she said she doesn’t “bleach first”. She means the type that strips the hair to the blonde/ whitish pigment first before adding color…at least I hope that’s what’s she’s trying to say…I’m trying to save her, LOL

Delicate Disaster: That's exactly what I use to do my red, I just do a different shade. I love it and my hair stays so healthy too

MES・HURAM: ️: "I always start off with my roots" Brad Mando: *crys in baked roots*

Beelzebubz: I'm showing this to my mom, I definitely wanna try! I didn't know you could do it like this. Would've saved so much time

MsInaa: Beautiful this looks amazing on you !!

Harley Xx: as a former cosmetologist you are indeed “bleaching” your hair. everyone needs a quick “developer” lesson asap

mama Wolf: *She’s right. I did this to my best friends hair back in 2012-2018 and her hair is black. It came out very bright scarlet each time. I recommend. Her hair is so beautiful and mine was always damaged because I like to be blonde.*

Brooklyn Hassell: Girlll!!! I'VE LITERALLY BEEN DOING THE SAME EXACT THINGG!!!!!!! ‍♀️ Since Highschool!!! SAME EXACT COLOR AND EVERYTHING!! & FYI it's Doesn't fade that Orangey Color!! It's Just Fades to a Darker Red!! ♥️

whitney baxter: It’s as if I heard the sound of Hair stylists everywhere gasp as she worked it through to her ends…

Diva Deb: It's a great product I also use it my hair was black it's so easy to dye your hair you don't have to put any bleach like she said I use magenta and intense red I mix them together so it won't be that bright but it comes on really pretty and I get a lot of compliments on my hair and I'm turning 61

maeeshalt: Says no bleach. Immediately pulls out 30 volume developer. ️️

Daja R.: I knew that’s what you used!!! I loved using this hair dye back in highschool. My color was also magenta!

Catherine: Love it. It looks perfect

Disappointed: i swear by this stuff bc i have very dark brown hair and i know this lightens my hair as it goes, it's great because prelightening my hair before dyeing it at home is very scary and this gets it all done in 1 step. I use the red from the hilights ones and my hair still feels healthy (redyed twice since april, last time about two weeks ago), it lasts a while for me, and looks really good ((:

Gira Crystal: I used to color my hair this way when I was in high school!!! I finally felt like I lived my little mermaid fantasy lol

Mallemaroking: YES THIS IS SO AMAZING I USED IT AND IT WAS GREAT!!

LeeaH Shared account: Honestly looks amazing. Suits you so well. Love it

SleepyCocoa: Putting aside the whole bleach thing, be careful when dealing with your roots by yourself! And also be wary with keeping stuff in too long, it can damage your hair for life. :)

Meadow Pavlovic: Definitely gonna try this. My hair is dark brown and has been red…..for 7 years (approx 9 if you count the random one here and there before I went solid) …….most commonly it’s solid burgundy or solid neon red, but from time I time I put in some mixes of shades with black and red. I’ve also shaved the sides and for the first time in 5 years, I’ve sorta grown it out. It’s 1/4 the length of the rest of my hair (long part is mid back when wet and held straight). I hope this works, because I hate dying my hair with a long, complicated, and expensive process

Taylor Ellison: I’ve been looking for this for a decade! THANK YOU, GODDESS!

Desi Monique: I've been using this hair dye for years this is my go-to

Kristina Clarvoe: Thanks, girl! You are gorgeous!! Many blessings! ♥️

Amelie Zechner: I love it! If I had brown or black hair, I'd instantly die it like this. Actually every single colour I like.

Cera-Tan: Love it. Next time to save the integrity of your hair. In the last 20mins wet your mid lengths and ends and put the rest of the colour on the mid lengths and ends. This will deposit instead of lift and deposit your hair (you dont need it to be lifted as it already is) the water will dilute the 30 vol to about a 10vol which will deposit the colour into your mid lengths and ends saving the integrity of your hair. Hope this makes sense.

Aris Hoosier: That looks so amazing on you!!!

little .pixiedoll: My favorite part is when she says "Just keep in mind I'm not a hair dresser" as if we couldn't guess. Bro ain't no WAYYYY she's been doing this for 8 years and still has no idea she's using bleach. I would be so embarrassed ... I would erase every one of my social media accounts.

Tarra Mitchell: I have dark brown hair and I used to use the stuff about 10 years ago and it is awesome! I even got my best friend and my sister using it.

Stephanie: That's what I used when I kept mine red for about two years. It was way less damaging than bleaching first and using a deposit color.

samj530: I used the same colour. Always came out perfect.

Alex Plier: This is amazingly helpful ,thanks

PuPae S.: With these ‘bleach’ comments I had to look up more info. It seems to me this HiColor is a high lift tint which doesn’t usually contain bleach. It claims to lift 3-4 level and if this lifted her to a 7-8 and deposit Red - doesn’t sound impossible though the vibrancy is surprising. My only advice is to never run it through to your ends, just do your roots. Right before you rinse out you can put some water and emulsify really well so you can remove stains from your skin and run through to your ends to freshen up color (at this point it’s weakened from sitting for so long and by adding water so it acts somewhat like a toner), only leave that on for a few minutes then shampoo off completely.

Deb sanchez: I love this method but I personally wouldn't apply to all of my hair when touching up. Just applying this method to the roots would suffice while using a semi permanent color in all the hair to avoid the damage of the developer.

XicanaLush Zapatista: That's my hair, I've been dying my hair that color for over 10 years too! Love ❤️

Amanda Walter: This color is awesome and I too have used this it's great no bleach needed and affordable too

Ash: Same thing I did for years! love that stuff!

Viper.魔: “I don’t use bleach” proceeds to use a lightening and then depositing color all in one — so yes, you are essentially bleaching your hair under that res

Angel: Hicolor is magical, i love it.. i’ve used the red, copper , and a couple of the blond ones.. i stand by it for darker hair, it’s easy and quicker than bleaching then waiting for dye to process

Lyla B: Your hair is so red and pretty!!! I wish I could have just like yours!

Shannon Drake: I love it, beautiful!

Madison Rogers: I use the same product totally works saves time and less damage on hair

A G: Well to be fair, I hate having to bleach my hair and then dye it so this is pretty cool, I would try it but I started highlighting my head. I wish I saw this tutorial before!

Echo hate you: i use conditioner to work the access dye off my skin :) it works so good

Juicy31783: The dye she used works great without developer (bleach). Used a different color on a black/brown wig and it turned out bright

Lena Jones: I used to use that exact mix years ago and got so many compliments.... It never failed

Valene Balogh: It took me a good year or so but i was able to get my dark brown hair a vibrant red as well. The longer i fid it the better it got. I now miss it cause I decided to grow my greys out instead haha.

momlovsalex: Yes. I know what works for my hair. I color my hair red too, but I use a different shade of red. Yours is almost similar. Some shades a red is a no no. Be choosey about what shades you use.

OA: I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS TECHNIQUE FOREVERRRRR. THANK YOU!!!!

WaterBabyBlu: You did a great job. That color is beautiful.

Tori: That Color is stunning with your skin tones, I’ve got too much red in my skin to pull this off ✨

Lexi B: So I've used this and it works but something I didn't know, is that your ends that are already lifted, you can use semi permanent hair color so you're not continually damaging your ends.

Alina Scaueru: If everyone is commenting on how wrong or right she's doing it, I just want to say: HER HAIR LOOKS GORGEOUS AND SHE'S STUNNING, AND IT WORKS FOR HER! WELL DONE FOR POSTING THIS

Sylvia Crafts: Gorgeous and it fits you so well.

DomO Jackson-Grant: Beautiful. Looks good on you!!

gasstationnachos: i used to use this stuff a decade ago and it absolutely ripped. glad to see it still does!

larkholland: I mean ... i have medium brown hair naturally and ive been dying my hair red off and on for years. Red is not a color that requires bleaching or lightening beforehand unless you want a BRIGHT ass result.

Claire Doo: My hair came out great!!

Linda Mortlock: Just beautiful ❤️

T.K.: I did that for my son’s hair and it looked good.

Screamer: You ever tried putting Vaseline on your edges? Helps with runoff and dying the scalp

Ty: I used to work at Sally's, I guess there's a reason that the magenta was always sold out so many people love that shade!

KawaiiandDark: I got lucky I can use a semi-permanent dye straight on my hair Learned that I can get bright red with an orange tint (think fall leaves red-orange) with just orange dye

Rosella's Online: I put strait box dye onto my head and my hairs dark brown. It took so well and was extremely bright

Carra Lumsden: really good coverage and colour. Only ever had this hairstyle in Black however it suits you very well in this colour. Love it! P.E.A.C.E

Jordy Elize: Been red for years, also always use Loreal Hicolor. Every time I've used another brand I'm disappointed. Did find there is a color depositing masq by Ion though that keeps my hair very bright and conditioned between dyes!! Definitely gotta wear gloves when applying in the shower though.

Sabrina L: High lift colors have lifting ingredients included in their formula. So just bear in mind, you ARE lofting with a high lift color. Aka.. they're totally fine to use just don't keep overlapping it. You just need to touch up your roots when they grow out, then you can just use a red direct dye to refresh the exosting red!

angelica maycock: Ive literally been using magenta hicolor since 2016 and its all that works without going completely blonde first.

AshLynne Boitos: This is how I got mine red after dying my hair jet black for years

Brian wilcox: You're right, there isn't bleach BUT it's a super high lift lightener with some toner and obviously color.. so it's still lifting your hair, toning out any brassiness and depositing color at the same time. That's why it recommends using a 30 or 40 developer. Just be careful because it's still damaging your hair and has a ton of ammonia. 40 mins is a long time to keep that on. Definitely a smart move using a 10 or 20 developer on the ends/already processed hair. That's saved you from some major damage. Regardless your hair looks beautiful and the actual color is great on you

Britney Guess: My question is ….how do you keep it from bleeding on everything?

Maddie Mae: I think the reason there are some arguments in the comment section is due to semantics. Many people refer to bleach being a sodium hypochloride solution (such as your liquid bleach) and are stating that this developer does not contain chloride, whereas some are saying the developer IS a bleaching agent--you both are right. The developer is a bleaching solution that usually contains hydrogen peroxide which oxidizes the melanin in the hair. So it is true that it is not the typical chloride "bleach" people think of, but it is also true that it's still a bleaching agent. While both cause damage to the hair, the hydrogen peroxide typically creates less harmful byproducts, as it decomposes into water.

peopleandanimalslovm: I love this brand, it's what gets my hair super red

Lucy luna: Omg this is my dream colour!!!!!!❤️

KayDogCreations: You remind me of me. I used to dye my hair red just like you do haha. Not a salon person but I got so many compliments

Eveline Espitia: Girlll I did this same mistake years ago and my hair eventually fell off

Christina Fraser: That hi lift red is amazing for dark hair to get around multiple round of all over bleaching.

Hannah Simons: How do you keep the red from fading? Mine always faded within like 4-6 weeks and I had to redye constantly which is why I gave up on the red; it was destroying my hair.
