This is a great question about laser hair removal which touches on PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and hair color.

Hey guys, it's the doc, and here is our next installment of the hashtag s, dr muggle series of posts, and this one comes in from youtube. This one comes in from jodiel and the question is, i have a question and watching this made me think of it. I have pcos and get facial hair. I tried like 10 years ago to have laser hair removal and it didn't really work. They said it could be because i have red hair. Do you think, now, being 10 years later, it would work on someone like me now just curious if things have gotten better well jody, that's a great question and um there's sort of multiple parts to answering that question, which is why i i offered to make a Video about it because i think there's some great information and a lot of folks, i think, have the same question that you have so. Women that have pcos can have hair growth and typically, that happens on the face, the chin, upper lip, etc and laser hair removal. In women with pcos generally doesn't work great, and sometimes women with pcos can actually have paradoxical hair growth, where the laser hair removal treatments actually stimulate hair growth. The mechanism behind that isn't really really clear. There'S a bunch of like proposed hypotheses as to why that might happen, but the science hasn't really really been worked out as of yet um. So i think in your case you know, delays because you had an underlying diagnosis of pcos. The laser hair removal didn't really have an opportunity to do its thing. So in my practice, patients who have pcos or if i suspect that they might have a pcos tendency, because sometimes it can be hard to diagnose um i'll, frequently put my patients on some kind of anti-androgen medication. I frequently use a medication called spironolactone, which is a diuretic, but it has anti-androgen effects i'll have my patients on that for a few months before we start doing laser hair removal and it's a very, very effective strategy. My patients have done very very well with that. Now, in terms of your hair color, as long as your hair is dark, so if it's red that it's you know, black hair is easier. Laser hair removed than red hair red hair is easier to remove than blonde hair. But if your hair is like is red and your skin is very, very fair lasers should be able to treat that you might need a few more treatments and someone would say very dark, coarse hair. But in your case i don't think it's necessarily the color of your hair unless it's very, very light red. If it's a darker red again, i don't. I think it should be fine in your case, if that, if your hair is on the darker side, i think more likely it was your underlying diagnosis of pcos that limited the efficacy of laser hair removal. So i hope that answers your question jody. Let'S get it! You

Jodi L: Thank you so very much for this video!! I did get more hair after I had the laser hair removal. I need to find a dermatologist that knows about putting me on that medicine so it would work. Our health insurance now covers it if we have pcos and they didn't when I had it done.

Caleb Lily River Swack: WHATS THE BEST LAZER FOR RED HAIR (STRAWBERRY BLONDE, DARKER RED) BUT FACIAL HAIR IS DEFINITELY ON THE DARKER ALMOST BLACK SIDE WITH A FEW RED ONES HERE AND THERE.. AND FAIR SKIN? I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH MY DERMATOLOGIST IN 2 WEEKS :)

Christina Melas: Electrolysis is the only way.

Susan Pearson: What is PCos thanks
