Hello, silver friends: this is Jolie from Quicksilver hair and today we're going to talk about the top 11 causes of why your gray hair turns yellow I'm going to follow this video with two more. The second one will be solutions for yellowing and the third one will be ways to prevent yellowing. So hopefully, with these three videos, you will get. You know to pick my brain and get the best information that I have on this topic. I know this is a struggle point for many people with gray hair. So before we get started, I want to say if you are growing your hair out and you're concerned about this, do not be afraid of it. There are ways to mitigate it, prevent it, and hopefully you never have to deal with it, but sometimes it happens, and you know it doesn't happen to every hair type, but when it does, this is a good resource for you and I hope you find it helpful In the description box below is a link to my email list to sign up for my emails. When you get your welcome email, there is a free download that is a book on yellowing and much of the material that I'm going to go over plus. Some is in that ebook. So if you want to check that out head down to the description box and go sign up for my email list, let's get started so I break yellowing into two categories: external causes and internal causes. So we're going to go over external. First and then I'll go over the internal causes. The first external cause is sun. Damage in your white hair are blue molecules when the UV rays bust, those blue molecules up, yellow molecules are left in their place, and that is what causes yellowing from sun damage. The second cause of yellowing on gray hair is from water, either your city, water, well, water, hard water, swimming pool chemicals, Etc, can cause buildup on the hair. Much of the this water contains minerals which adhere to the hair shaft, so chlorine, iron, fluoride, calcium, Etc, can adhere to the hair and cause a discoloration. The third cause of yellowing is heat damage. There are two categories of heat damage. There is where you have burned and singed the hair with a curling iron flat iron or hair dryer, or where you have actually just burned the product that was on your hair. With one of your heat tools, the burn to the actual hair strand cannot be removed. It is permanent, however, if you have burned product, you may be able to remove that with certain clarifying processes that we'll discuss in the next video number. Four is air pollution. Air pollution is something that you know, there's very little. You can do about it, but all of the things in our air, whether it be from fires and smoke uh smoke in restaurants and bars uh exhaust fumes from maybe you walk to work or you live in the city. All of these things can contribute to yellowing on gray hair. I'M sure most people know number five causes yellowing, but I'm including it anyways, and that is smoking. It can adhere to your hair because it contains tar and the tar has a yellow tint to it, which is what yellows your nails and your white clothing and your skin and so forth. Number six is hair products, and I think this is probably one of the primary causes of yellowing caused by buildup is the products that we use. Some of the ingredients adhere to the hair and cause that yellowing ingredients that you want to look for are added dyes. That'S the first thing I look for um. I have seen heat protectants, even that were supposed to be a clearer liquid, be added, yellow dye, so watch out for that you don't want yellow dyes added to your products. You want to look at the products and make sure that they're on the white side, some of your more natural products are going to have that natural off-white color they're, probably not going to affect your hair color unless they contain staining oils and those staining oils would Be like hemp in particular avoid that one always it will turn white, hair, green avocado, oil, olive oil, Etc. Some of these oils come in colorless form and are used in hair products. So if the product is white or clear, don't worry about it. You probably won't have any issue whatsoever if you are using heavy silicones and they're in, like your shampoo, your conditioner, you leave in your styling creams your serums for heat, styling and so forth. You might be getting too many silicones and those can build up on your hair and, I think, with heat in particular, even though they protect your hair from heat, if they're on your hair all the time and you never get the chance to remove them, I think They do have a propensity to turn yellow the final ingredient that I would watch for is fragrance. Fragrances are made out of essential oils, some of them have other synthetic ingredients added to them and those are synthetic fragrances. Others are natural oils and have no synthetic ingredients, but those core oils do have color to them and can discolor your hair. So, if fragrance is really high on the ingredients list, which I have seen fragrance in you know the third fourth fifth ingredient, which means it's very concentrated amount of fragrance. It'S very pasta possible that that could be yellowing. Your hair number seven is surprisingly enough: hair accessories. The dies used on these Fabrics like linen cotton and leather can, when you put your hair up, wet or you've worked out and gotten kind of sweaty that die can transfer to your hair. So one way to find out whether or not it is your hair accessories is to wash them fill up a sink with some warm water and some gentle soap dunk the hair accessories in and if you see color of the hair accessory bleeding into the water, it Likely will bleed onto your hair, so I would pass that hair accessory onto a friend who does not have gray hair and find something else as an alternative number. Eight is medicated shampoos and scalp treatments. If you have something like psoriasis um, some of those shampoos can discolor your hair, and you want to talk to your dermatologist about spot treating. So you would put the shampoo right on the spot and not run it through the whole length of your hair and that might help mitigate the staining or ask for an alternative. Now we move on to internal causes. Number nine is medications and supplements medications for chemotherapy malaria thyroid hormone care. Can all discolor your hair from the inside out um. You may have to look at this as a this is just the risks of caring for yourself and embrace the color that is coming out. If you can supplements like biotin, p-a-b-a, panothenic, acid and iron can cause the hair to produce pigment and return pigment to your hair, which can make it look like your hair is discolored and it may not be number 10 is porosity if your hair is growing out At low porosity, which it should be, you probably will not be having discoloration at the roots, and I see this all the time there's rarely discoloration at the roots, because that hair is the lower porosity as your hair gets longer, especially when you get past your ear. This hair down here the porosity, starts to go up because of oxidative stress and age of the hair. I mean at this point. You know this hair down here is probably five years old, so it's been through a lot. A lot of environmental damages, heat, Etc. Can contribute to that porosity going up so the higher your porosity is the more chances your hair is going to grab onto yellowing and become discolored. Finally, number 11 is life illness, stress hormones. All of these things that happen in life that can cause hair loss can also change the follicle and cause hair discoloration. So those are things that you really can't do a lot about as far as your hair is concerned, but as you heal as life goes on. As the stresses re Abate, you might see your hair returning to its natural white color. Linda Meyermann: Nice video! Another lesson that I have learned is not to apply your foundation too close to your hairline because it can cause yellowing. Also vitamin c and other serums can bleed into your hair. Silver hair is beautiful, but not always easy! lol

Carolyn Stockton: Thank you for clarifying important aspects of yellowing and what to expect in greying hair. Very helpful.

Silver Curls ZELDA: Great Video Jolie! I didn't think about accessories! I don't use too many hair accessories, but it is good to know!

Pandorica: Can't wait for the rest of this series!

Tracy: Oh no! I don’t have an issue with yellowing, but one of my new favorite hair product is the Paul Mitchell Hemp multitasking spray which has hemp oil as the second ingredient!

PaulaSophia: Best video I've seen on this topic .... thanku Joli

Silver Curls ZELDA: Life, illness, stress, hormones, yes, yes, yes, and yes! Lolol.
