Hey guys welcome back to another video, so today i decided that i wanted to sit down and do um or share some of the common myths that i've kind of grown up believing and some common myths i've come across. It'S been on my hair journey. I think this would be particularly useful for those of you that are just starting out as well, who are kind of getting caught up in all of this nonsense, that's kind of maybe going to affect you on your hair journey going forward um. I know some of these kind of kept my hair kind of stagnant, so um yeah, hopefully after watching this video you'll realize that you don't need to be listening to any of these. You just need to have a good, haircare routine and be taking care of your hair, but firstly, if you're new to my channel thanks so much for stopping by my name is julie and on my channel you'll find lots of haircare tips, tutorials and hairstyles. All that type of stuff, so if you like what you see, then please go ahead and subscribe. Okay, so the first myth is that cutting your hair makes it grow faster. I'Ll be honest, i actually used to believe this one when i was growing up - and i remember kind of looking forward to my hair being trimmed, sometimes because i thought okay, my hair's trimmed, it will grow. But then i realized that my hair only ever stayed at the same length, which was probably around my shoulders, and i thought to myself. You know why is this happening? I just don't get it so. Basically, cutting your hair right keeps your hair exactly where it is. If not shorter, all right, the best way to look at it is that on average, our hair grows half an inch a month, all right. So, let's say in three months: that is an inch and a half of growth right now, if you're someone that is trimming your hair every three months, what are you doing? You'Re literally trimming off that whole inch of growth that you've just had and left yourself with half an inch that is it so in a year, that's literally going to be like two inches of growth, because you've removed four four inches of growth: yeah, because we retain Six inches in the year, so, if you think about it, that is nothing and you're, probably wondering why you're not retaining length because you're cutting your hair thinking, it's going to make your hair go faster when in fact it's keeping it exactly where it is only trim. Your hair, if it needs it, but if you're trying to retain length, then seriously do not cut your hair too often, because that your hair will remain where it is so. The next myth is that washing your hair, too often dries it out. That is just not true. Our hair needs water. Water is like the ultimate moisturizer, you know it hi. It adds hydration into our hair, and that is the one of the ways our hair receives moisture and it does not dry your hair, okay, using sulfates on your hair can dry. It can kind of strip your hair of its natural oils and moisture, but you don't always have to be using sulfates. You can use sulfate free products, you can use. Co washes sometimes um, but you know if you're someone that was let's say you were kind of washing your hair every day, just using sulfates, not deep conditioning, not moisturizing, then yeah your hair's going to dry out. But who is doing that? Who is doing that? You know so what you want to do is just don't use sulfates too often all right use some sulfate free ones as well. As i said, use some co-washes wash your hair. You can wash your hair like once a week twice a week if you wanted to that, is not going to damage your hair. It'S how you take care of your hair after the washing process that matters. So the next myth is protective. Styles grow your hair. All right again, this is one i used to believe as well. Um. The best way to explain it right is that our hair is always growing all right all the time my hair is growing, but what happens is when you wear a protective style. Okay, your hair is protected within that protective style. So, as your hair is growing, there's no manipulation taking place because you can't comb or style your hair, because you've been protected. So you are able to retain length right. So when you take your hair up that protective style, so let's say you're kind of wearing protective styles back to back, for maybe i don't know six months or longer when you take your hair out that protective style you're going to notice that you're you've kind of Retained length and you're thinking, oh my gosh like this is growing my hair, but it's not what it is is that when your hair is not in that protective style and you're, manipulating your hair, often you're combing, you're, styling you're, doing whatever some of those processes can Damage our hair and cause breakage and then, when it breaks our hair, we kind of lose the length. So it kind of appears as though our hair is not growing when it actually is, but protective styles protect your hair, which is why it's called protective styles that so that you can retain the length. So it does not grow your hair because our hair is always growing, as i've already said. So the next myth is that afro hair can't grow long. I believe this one as well yeah way before i started on my hair journey. I just thought to myself: my hair only grew to a certain length around my shoulders. It was stagnant. I didn't know why, but it was when i started um looking into um starting a hair journey and kind of researching that i saw lots of women. Many black women with long hair, okay and it was because they were taking care of their hair. You know prior to me, seeing these things i wasn't taking care of my hair. I wasn't washing the deep conditioning in my hair. Often i was trimming my hair here and there i was using heat on my hair. I was doing a lot of bad hair care practices, so i wasn't seeing any um length retention. Okay. So if you're not seeing any length, it's probably because you don't know how to take care of your hair. Once you learn to take care of your hair, you are going to notice growth and that's when you're going to realize that our hair does grow and i'm sure you've seen it in many places on here on youtube on other social media platforms. So this is just a complete myth, so the next myth is that long hair is based on genetics. Oh my gosh. This one frustrates me the most, particularly because before i started my hair journey, as i mentioned, my hair was stagnant. It kind of remained at shoulder length, it never grew any further and i kind of went through a lot in basically kind of learning about my hair had to take care of it. I started out on a relaxed hair journey. Then i went to natural and i've achieved great results because i've taken care of my hair and i've had people say to me: oh you're, lucky, you know, you've just got good genetics and i think to myself. You know what yes, genetics plays a big part in many things, but that is not what has grown my hair or made me kind of achieve the results that i've achieved. It is a lot of hard work and effort. I'Ve put into investing into my head to take care of it, and people just want to put genetics on that, and it's not true. Okay, somebody that has good genetics right that um can grow their hair. Long may not be able to get um to that stage. Without knowing how to take care of their hair all right if they are following bad hair care practices, like i mentioned, not washing and deep conditioning and using heat on their hair, all the time they're not going to be able to see the length that they can Potentially achieve okay, so it's got nothing to do with just genetics. As i said yes, genetics plays a part okay, but you may not know how long your hair can grow if you don't know how to take care of it all right. So it's down to good hair care practices as well as other things, so the next myth is that heat damage can be reversed. Unfortunately, it can't, when you use heat at a very high temperature, to the point of where it damages the hair structure, so it basically damages the disulfide bond in the hair, which kind of gives our hair its shape. Its structure kind of you know the kinky coiny pattern once it damages that it becomes kind of um kind of it kind of relaxes the the curl pattern. Just like a relaxer does you know it breaks down the protein bond and makes the hair straight it's more or less the same thing, and it cannot be reversed. The only way to kind of um fix that is to cut it off. That is, it cannot be reversed. It doesn't matter how many protein treatments you're doing. If the hair is damaged, it is damaged. You just have to cut it off and basically just be careful when you're using heat next time and last but not least, the last myth is that you need to grease your scalp for growth. Okay, so i used to do this. I used to do this when i was a lot younger. I used to grease my scalp every night, desperately hoping that my hair would grow and guess what happened? Nothing. It stayed exactly where it was okay, we don't need to be putting anything on our scalp at all. Our scalp produces its own natural oils, known as sebum okay, and that basically takes care of the scalp. It kind of lubricates it and nourishes it. When we add um additional products to our scalp, it basically kind of messes, with the oil production and kind of tells our scalp that okay, it's getting additional um lubrication from somewhere else. So it kind of slows it down and that's when people start sometimes having issues with a dry, scalp, itchy, scalp and things like that, because we're kind of interfering with the um seven production um i mean i use oils on my hair for scalp massages, which is Fine because i want to help to stimulate and encourage hair growth, but i know that i don't need to put anything on my scalp. I don't put it on there to kind of lubricate, my scalp or to kind of relieve any itchiness or nothing like that. I just do it for scalp massages, okay, so but greasing your scalp does not do anything. It basically is very thick and it's heavy and it basically just kind of clogs the scalp and just causes lots of different issues with growth as well. So um, that's one that if you are doing that, you definitely need to stop doing it so guys. Those are all my myths um. There are many more out there, but those are some of the common ones that i see all the time and some that i grew up kind of believing and yeah. Let me know in the comments, if you guys have kind of come across these or any other ones, that you feel that you know what people need to know this as well put it in the comments. Let'S kind of like you know, have a conversation share information. So that people can write realize you know what we need to kind of stop, believing especially those that kind of starting out on their hair journeys, it'll be useful for them to know as well, um but yeah. Let me know in the comments, if you guys believed any of these myths as well and any others that you feel like sharing with everyone so guys. I hope you enjoyed this video and, if you did, please do give it a thumbs up share it with someone who you think will benefit from seeing it and don't forget to subscribe to my channel as well thanks. So much for watching i'll, see you in the next video take care bye,

Healthy Afro Hair: Happy Sunday I’m sharing 7 Black Hair Care Myths many of us grew up believing and some which many still believe today. So I thought I’d highlight some of the common ones to let you know they’re simply not true! Remember to drop a comment below letting me know if you believed any of these and any other myths you’ve come across that’s worth sharing! Please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE to see more videos!

darcey derosa: My biggest myth is believing that my hair could thrive without oils and butters. Big mistake! Also, not using hair grease and water to moisturize my hair. I should have stuck with what my mom did. Protective styles do work if they are not left in too long and if the hair is properly moisturized in between.

Tiwonge Dimba: You inspired me when I was relaxed..you inspired me to big chop and now you are inspiring me to grow my natural hair go girl!

Mimi Cakal: I always wondered why my scalp would itch after I applied oil to it. I grew up believing that you needed to oil your scalp and the itching meant that it was growing. Thank you for the clarity I will stop that immediately

SerenityMoon: I have keep hearing that cutting my hair will make my hair grow!! But it's not true! Like you say, it cutting the growth of ny hair and my length will be remaining the same. Thank you for this video

Marvette SB: Wished you explained the importance of taking down of styles for length retention because that's truly the key. Also I've seen growth with grease & oils on the scalp, guess we all have different experiences AND thanks for this video very informative for new comers

GOODNEWS DOSUMU: yeah i also thought protective styles grew my hair Ha! our hair grows protected or not. its the lenght retention that matters. once again, thanks Julie

klshufford: I had the same thoughts about the hair trimming situation. I was like how is your hair ever gonna look longer if you keep cutting off the progress. I think yes is necessary to get trims but not as often as is suggested.

Samara Lewis: Thanks for this video! There were alot of these myths that I believed as well. I was wondering if I don't grease/oil my scalp for like a protective style or for itchiness, what should I do for it? Are the anti-itch sprays a good idea or should I try to transition to avoiding this habit?

ElegantPaws01: Agreed. It is more than genetic. Good hair care practices can take your hair to its growth potential.

Lisa: I have been natural for six years I protective style in the winter but in the summer my hair is out and proud I love my hair the back is almost bra strap length my bang is pass my chin i don’t use heat unless I am Blow drying it after hours of trying to get my wash and go to dry I keep it on low not high I am so proud to be natural healthy natural!

Texas_Made_1988: 0:59 YESSSS lmfaooo, especially at the beauty shop,we used to have to literally tell our hair dresser to NOT over chop our hair..she is "that type" that believed black females couldn't have long hair..she was scissors crazy

Adrienne Smart: You are so right about all those myths about natural hair and growth. Natural hair grows faster then permed hair. I look at natural hair like a plant. If you water it on a daily basis and add some moisturizer and oil to seal it. It will grow like crazy you have to be patient and show your hair much love and it will love you back with long beautiful locks.

Dumisani Nyathi: Sooo shook about oiling scalp, omg been doing this for ages!! Can you do a vid on how to protect shirts and tops from oils as hair oils sometime ruin shirt collars

cerysnb: I learn so much from you video’s, thank you so much for sharing xxx

Divine Chabata: Thank you for sharing. Its the protective styles grow hair. Personally I am not too worried about the length of mine but I just want it healthy. I would trim and trim the ends. You give some very useful tips on this. I need that I was close to going back to relaxers but that has damaged my hair. That method never worked for me. I am glad you raised this. Very helpful. Some of us do protective to make life easy but it dosnt really do much. But moisturising and deep condition definitely works for sure.New subscriber here tryna listen to what my hair needs not just try every single method lol useful tips on this channel thank you

Starbird: Do you think relaxing your hai helps prevent damage? Because whenever I relax my hair it gives me a sort of burning tingling, and I used to think that was just my hair loosening up at the roots or something. But is relaxing uour hair really necessary?

Matthia Laporte: I trim my hair often and it has grown considerably

theafrogirl2021: I love this video amazing. Thank you so much very informative

JJ THA DON: I'm only a year and a half in my hair journey , it's hard

Chocolateme77: Actually grease does not clog pores . A group of scientist and chemist debunk that. Back in the 60s ,70s, 80s, even the 90s. People greased their hair and scalp and they had thick full beautiful hair. You just have yo know how to use it. The problem come when you pack to much grease on your scalp. Bug if you use a thin layer of grease on your hair and scalp it is joy going to hurt.

DebraFlower Floral Design: Very helpful as always.

Kc Britt ASMR: This is helpful. Thank you.

PAULINE KUSIIMA: Thx for enlightening us about many things

jj fontana: Thanks for this Julie x

Victoria little miss Victoria: I know how to take care of my hair but my mum does not believe in deep conditioning and other hair care routines

Adassa Stone: Thank you so much ❤

God’s Precious: Enjoyed Can we discuss what’s best if you have high porosity hair?

leiyah nyabuto: I had heat damage on my ends and with time I reversed it with fermented rice water,,,,,,,, also I believe triming keeps hair healthy,,,, it's a practice that should not be stopped

JJ THA DON: Myth 7 I don't agree because for people with dandruff has to have some type of oil on their scalp like, "Jamaica hair oil"

Patricia Fuller: Great advice and thumbs up too you

Flora: You are so beautiful , with a beautiful healthy hair! ❤️

ms.chelle: Some good myth busters!

Tabithah Care: Been looking for your channel. Great it pooped up. Thank you for this video

Afia Serwaah: So is oiling our scalp everyday bad?

Mark Nito: Fascinating

Rihanna Ajie: Long hair is truly genetics

Esther Natasha: Praise God brothers and sisters, Jesus loves us and wants us to spend eternity with him in heaven. So turn away from sin and accept him as Christ and you'll be saved.
