IN THIS EPISODE

People are always saying natural hair is hard to manage. The girls weigh in on whether or not this is true.

ABOUT BLACK HAIR IS...

“Black Hair Is...” is a debate, led by six women with relaxed hair and six women with natural hair that explores ideas of what Black Hair should be and what it actually is, by looking at the divides that exist in our community.

We’re having this conversation now because although we’re in a moment when we’re embracing the possibilities of our hair and praising its versatility, certain hairstyles and hair choices are still being penalized.

Our goal for the series is to contribute to creating an environment that allows our differences and choices to stand on even ground.

We are super happy to have partnered with Smooth 'N Shine to bring this to life.

Is natural hair hard to manage? Is natural hair hard to manage Hmm? When I did the big chop, I do believe that my hair was harder to manage. Just ... detangling. It alone takes an extra hour or two.. I'Ve seen people who have routines that take them. Like 20 hours just to do their hair. And at the beginning, when I first went natural, I was one of those. To me. It was hard to style. It was hard to find products for the short hair. The amount of time it takes just to wash. My hair goes up for about a half hour for every two months that I'm outside of a relaxer., And you can put this on there if you want.. I think that when people say that natural hair is hard to manage, that's just some bullshit.. It takes me about 15-20 minutes to groom my locs.. I can do my hair, I can wash it groom it and style it right before work. You know., But when it grew out, my hair was easy to manage easier to manage.. It just took a little bit more time. ..., and it was just the challenge of dealing with my own texture for the first time.. I think if I was to cut it all off and start over as long as I put the time and effort to it. Just the same way as I'm putting the time and effort to care for my relaxed hair, I don't think that it'll be hard to manage for me.. I think it's on the person. Everyone's hair is different.. Everyone'S hair texture is different.. You have to do what works for your hair.. It just depends on the style you're trying to achieve. If you're saying that natural hair is hard to manage. You'D probably say that straight hair is hard to manage or that wavy hair is hard to manage, or you would come up with any and every reason that your hair is hard to manage. Based on the fact that you just don't like your hair., Is natural hair hard to manage Yes and no. It's healthier., So it's easier to maintain the health.. It'S harder, as in that it's harder to detangle., And I feel like straightened hair is the opposite. Straightened. Hair is easier to detangle and it's easier to manage in that way., But you have to be on top of the health or you'll see damage

OSIR: I have 4c and low porosity hair and I personally think that people are more frustrated about moisture retention and growth/health ..or they simply don't know what to do on bad Hair days...my advice to anyone who's going through a setback is that simplicity is key ..and Reaserch is your best friend Love the natural you

zhugsandkisses: The freckled lady needs to miss me with that bull. I have been natural my WHOLE life. No perm, relaxer or texturizer. And even with all these years of experience, my hair is hard to handle. Just because I KNOW my hair is difficult to handle, doesn’t mean I hate it. She needs to stop making generalized opinions because she chooses to be natural

GarnetsWeb: I'm sorry, but I know my hair. Yes, it is hard to detangle. Yes I sometimes don't know what to style it in, and sometimes I hate twisting before bed. So for ME I consider that it is hard to manage. So Nikia, that offended me when you told me "you hate your hair when you say it's hard to manage". I've been natural for about 11 years now ( I had a short lived texturizer) so I have been natural long enough to know my hair, and for years it has been hard to take care of. But do I hate my hair because of that? No. I love my hair and I wouldn't trade it. No hate, but that statement just urked me..

Nelda Garcia: Natural hair can be more time consuming depending on length, texture, etc. To say that one does not like their hair or would find fault if it were any other texture bc they believe it is harder to manage is false in my opinion and an overstatement to say the least. Whether it is harder to manage or not is subjective and like I said above is dependent on many factors- Time, availability of products and tools, knowledge of natural hair care, etc. Let’s not make blanket statements.

Anthony Fox: it seems like it would be difficult for someone who's been relaxed their whole life and didn't grow up knowing how to care for their hair but once you do know how to care for it I think it would be pretty much just as easy as caring for any other type of hair

Dina S: Hard? No...DIFFERENT from anything I was used to but I had to learn

NALA: I honestly love my natural hair but for me its definitely challenging to manage. My wash day isn't too difficult but getting it into cute styles is whats hard and time consuming, because I'm not really into wearing the same hairstyles everyday. The drying time is ridiculous so its hard for me to do any kinda stretched styles. But overall it's just a learning process.

Brooke Hunter: I think when we try to make our hair look like something it was never meant to look like (i.e. distortion of our curl patterns, straightening, etc.), it's hard to manage. But it's hard to manage, then, because our hair was never *meant* to look like that in the first place, and so we struggle and we're so frustrated when trying to "manage" it into that something that it shouldn't be. I know probably 100% of people won't agree with me, but y'all.. I know we all love twist outs and braids outs, but changing the curl pattern of our hair is not what our hair is even supposed to look like. We're trying to get our hair to be something it's not and to look like something it shouldn't be. Now, yes, that is hard. But we don't have to keep doing it

Rachel E.: It's hard if you try to force it to do what it doesn't naturally do.

M. L: Its harder to manage than european hair. I dont want to spent a day washing my hair. When I had relaxed hair my life was so easier ! Freakle girl was beyond condescending. I love my my full head of hair I just dont want to spend 2 hours a day doing my hair and spend a day a week washing it.

hi: I don’t hate my hair I am just lazy and don’t want to comb it for 4 hours tf I’m tired I got a full time job

carlymx: when I asked my mom if having kids and raising them was hard, she answered "yes, I guess one could say its hard, but I love it. Being a mom is my favorite sport". If someone asked me, is it hard to take care of my hair, I would pretty much answer the same thing "yes, it is true, taking good care of my hair, is hard, but I fucking love it, and Im not complaining, cause I love my hair". Admitting that something is hard, isnt necessarily saying that its unlikable, thats like... completely besides the point in my opinion. Its just stating a fact. So, no, I do not agree with miss Nikia

Nika B: It’s hard when you’re first starting out and you’re listening to hair gurus but honestly all you need is conditioner and water.

Tiffini D: Saying that I hate my hair because I think it's hard to manage couldn't be more wrong. I love the little curls that pop when I wash n go, but it takes forever to get to that point. When I relaxed, I washed, deep conditioned, air dried all in a couple of hours, then put ringlets in with a flat iron, slept with a satin pillow with a loose hair tie and my hair was bra strap length. Now natural for 3 years, and barely past my shoulders while straight, it takes over an hour to wash, detangle, deep condition and rinse, then an hour to roll/twist/add product for a wash and go, and 12 HOURS to airdry. Can't just go to sleep on a satin pillow anymore, and since I live in a swamp climate, all that goes to shit as soon as I step outside since my texture is 4B.

SILKY MILKY: *I had to relax my 4z after 7 years. I was tired of detangling for 4 hours & getting migraines for hair I don't even like. Relaxing has solved all my issues.* ‍♀️

Prettii Lexii: Detangling is hard and time consuming for me, but I love my hair.

Shadow Starlight 201831: I love my hair even through the struggles. Never thought of it as being hard to manage. Irritatating at times ofc yes.

BABYBREA: Short natural hair is hard in the beginning especially for me to style it for school etc it’s really time consuming but if u hav the passion and will power it helps a whole lot

Taajah: Everyone’s hair is different, even if you and someone else has the same “hair type” (3a, 3b,3c,4a,4b,4c and so on) it’s always different. Natural hair could be straight, curly, kinky, wavy or whatever. Some hair takes moisture good some don’t. Someone with the same hair type as you may find detangling their hair easy asf while your hair may be tougher to detangle. But is natural hair hard to manage? I can’t speak for everyone but in my opinion I think not. I don’t think so because if you’re used to your hair and know how it works it will get easier on you. Learn about your hair and what it likes and what it doesn’t. Learn about your hair ladies (men too) and managing your hair will be so much easier for you and your hair.

Jill: Once you go through the pain and really thoroughly detangle your hair, everything is 100x easier!

SunFlower State of Mind: Multi textured tightly coiled natural hair can be difficult at times cause it takes time. Most type 4 hair is fragile so you can't just comb it out in 5 mins, you need at least 30-40 mins depending on length to properly Detangle it. My hair is type 3a-4c, but mostly 4, TIGHTLY COILED. No sugar coating YES! Natural hair can be difficult cause it's time consuming. Unless you have it in a protective style, you are going to spend lots of time and $ depending on your maintenance preferences. Some naturals like well defined curls all the time; some like twists, it takes products to acheive certain styles.. you can't just pull it up or back in a puff depending on the length.

purlplens: My natural hair was hard to manage because I had been relaxed for a long time. I had to relearn how to take care of my hair and embrace my 4c texture. Also, it is not so much about products but more about technique.

Erica Barnes: "I think when people say their hair is hard to manage, that's just some bullshit." YESSSSSSSSS SIS!!!! I just knew this was going to be a natural hair bashing video full of ppl who hate their hair and can't manage it. So glad she said this! If you're hair is hard to manage you're either lazy or ignorant. You either don't feel like learning how to take care of it or you just want the easy way out (wigs, weaves, perms). IT'S YOUR HAIR. The texture God blessed you with. Learn how to tame it!

Ashley Nicole: Yes. It’s very hard. Y’all don’t know how many times I’ve wanted to just shave my head

Bluckamey: It was hard learning my hair at first but I was so excited that I didn't care. But after six almost seven years natural it is so much easier than doing my relaxed hair ever was.

dwoollery: Having been relaxed until 2000, before dealing with my hair in it's natural state, yes, it was hard because frankly I didn't know what I was doing. Today, it can still be hard depending on what I'm trying to do to it. When my hair was relaxed, it was wrap and go. Easy peasy. I would not go back to relaxed hair though.

LaToyua Griffin: Having 4C type hair....HELL YES!!!! My natural hair started off healthy but ended up very damaged. It was hard for ME to manage.

Uchechukwu Oguchi: I think my hair is hard to manage, but I still believe that it's beautiful. I know the type of hair I have, and I know how much of a time commitment it is. I don't think people who haven't experienced what its like to have the same type of hair as me (length and texture) can really speak for everyone when it comes to difficulty in managing it. This is a nice video, but it kind of feels one-sided.

N: When I first went natural 6 yrs ago it was of course hard to manage in the beginning since I only knew how to work with relax hair. It was just a learning process of getting to know what works best and what doesn't work best for my hair. It might have taken a while but I know now how to keep it from being hard to manage.

Alaina C.: it depends on the texture of your hair. i have 4c hair and it's hard to detangle and it's very dry. Sometimes it's discouraging because the only style i know to do with it is a puff. Do i wish for a perm? sometimes. would i do it? no, because i'd miss it too much. just because people say their hair is hard to manage doesn't mean they hate their hair

Amanda Hinds: Its not hard to manage once you figure out what works for you. It took me years to finally figure out what works for my hair

Wazakauye Zulu: No People just try to avoid the learning curve. Once you learn it. I can promise you its not. Once you accept it for what it is instead of trying to make it do something else

Adia Ayanna: Been natural for two years now...completely chopped all my heat damaged tresses off and started from scratch. Now i have a huge, thriving fro...what takes the longest for my hair is just washing and detangling. The girl with the freckles wasnt trying to come for anyone, but theres always this negative connotation that is attached to the thought "natural hair is hard to manage" because we've been groomed to believe our natural textures (and I'm talking moreso about kinky hair) are too much, too "nappy", not professional, etc, which lead us to get relaxers. I was more stressed out about my damaged hair than I am with my natural hair.

Leah Dawson: 0:53 Oh really? I cut off ALL of my hair because I wasn't about to sit in a chair for goodness knows how long, brushing and styling my butt-length curls! Yes, it is hard to manage, especially if you have never done it before. Kudos to the people who take time with their hair.

Dr. Jay: Great video. If your hair is hard to manage due to detangling then maybe you are using the wrong conditioner. You have to find that one conditioner that makes detangling a breeze. Remember that natural hair loves moisture (water) so you may need to wash/co-wash more often to prevent tangling and knots. Trial and error is helpful but patience is key.

Isidora Veronica: It is hard to manage. I have been natural for 3 years now and I still feel like I am getting to know my hair. It gets harder as it grows but I love my hair without a doubt.

Myfilteredview: The last girl was spot on !!! My hair is healthier but natural but it’s an arm and a leg to wash and detangle and keep a decent style going. Relaxed was much easier to manage day to day but my hair was so unhealthy because I over styled it !! So it goes both ways.

Talyah Yisrael: My biggest pet peeve with my hair is just the shrinkage I can style my hair up nicely in a wash n go and like a half hour later it's shrunken and looks short despite my hair being past collar bone length. Some women can pull off short hair but personally I don't like it on me.

Queen Fox: For the girl whom has the white outfit on... I love my hair. Yes it's 4c... Yes it's hard as hell to manage... Yes it takes hours to wash, hours to detangle. That do not nean I hate my hair. My daughter's are natural they hair is that hard to deal with. You need to check your statement. Everyone does not has the same issue with hair. Boo bye

sjc04d: There was definitely a learning curve to managing my natural hair (mainly with moisture retention) but I don't think it's more difficult. It might take longer for some with natural hair to detangle and the styling is different but difficult? Not really...but that's just me.

AliasAneW: locs are sooo much easier to manage than strictly natural hair. the only hassle with locs is retwisting (and that's only IF you have manicured locs). That's why I cant wait to put mine back in but I made the mistake of shaving my head a week ago lol

Isidora Veronica: It is hard to manage. I have been natural for 3 years now and I still feel like I am getting to know my hair. It gets harder as it grows but I love my hair without a doubt,

Naisa Love: In the beginning it was harder but after time it got quicker and easier to manage. I really had to learn how to do my hair from scratch. thank god I caught up it’s a blessing

Stéphanie: Yes it’s very hard to manage especially in the beginning but once you find those golden products is so much easier to manage. I got my last relaxer circa September 2011 , last keratin treatment about the end of 2012 . I didn’t find my expensive golden products until this year lol many years of struggling . Plus my hair doesn’t like coconut oil or leave ins with alcohol it was a struggle for sure but now my hair is flourishing.

Ruffey: I grew up being told "our hair is difficult to manage" and crying every time my Mum had to comb my hair. But it's been 7 years of me doing my own natural hair and I know what the jig is by now. What styles to reach for if it didn't stretch over night. What to do if I'm too tired to braid my hair down over night. How to set it, what products it likes etc. If somebody had taught me all of that when I was a kid, 'difficult' wouldn't have come up.

Doreen Patterson: We are still learning how to manage black hair. However once you get to know your hair likes and dislikes and find the products then it gets alot easier. It's in the early days especially if you use to relax your hair, when you are learning to love your own hair, that's when it's difficult.

Kay Brittany: It’s funny because my 4c hair is wayyyy easier to manage VS when I had relaxed hair lol ‍♀️ the steam in the shower wouldn’t mess up my hair .

ItAYaGiRl VeRoNiCa: No no no . I am very frustrated because natural hair youtubers love to make it look difficult and expensive when is not. It’s all marketing they are sponsored so they wanna convince you to buy products. My hair grew the most when I cut the bullsh*t. I decide time is too precious for me to waste my weekends on hair. I wash my hair every 2 or 3 days shampoo, conditioner, dry with towel LCO on damp hair(don’t put too much products otherwise will take forever to dry) 4 braids to stretch and sleep.Next day unbraid, brush the hair put it in bun or wear braid out and go. Sometimes, once in a month I give extra love ( hot oil treatment and deep conditioner with heat) thats it. Now this is the 1st time in my life that I have voluminous bra length hair.

alison halward: The last girl sums it up perfectly. I'd say it does take me a while to detangle my hair and twist or braid it but the process isn't hard because my hair is pretty healthy and it has become a routine.

Shay Kay: Listen everyone's hair is different. YOUR hair might not be hard to manage; doesn't mean another's isn't, so Nikia's comment bothered me too. I've been natural for 6 years. It takes me 2 hours to detangle and braid every night, and wash day is its own separate 3-4 hr adventure. My hair tangles incredibly easy, so I can't afford to ever have it loose/not stretched. Even then, I usually end up taking scissors to it weekly. I have done my research, tried all the products, watched all the videos, read all the blogs. I have simply come to terms that my hair tangles easier, grows slower, and makes me have to work harder. I love my hair, yes, but I can get very frustrated,, and sometimes (like right now) I need a break and put my hair up in protective styles so I don't have to deal.

Super Peachy Draws: I’ve tried every possible trick and tip for curly hair . On my hair and every time I think i have the hang of maintaining it it falls flat. and starts looking crazy again. You’d think by 20 I would know by now how to take care of my hair. I still haven’t found the right way to do it. YEAH my hair is hard to manage

Phalyn Williams: The freckled lady's comments were offensive and she came across as very defensive as well.

M Perry: My hair is difficult to manage particularly due to this covid19 crises when my only salon has been closed down for several months and I was going there for over 30 years and they are still closed. Now I have to go to another salon and I am hoping that they will not want to cut my hair just to make it easier for them. I have always wanted to know why our hair is not like is not like Asian hair or like Hispanic hair. I want to have easy to manage hair to grow long because I do tie my hair to my femininity. It frustrates me so much, but when my hair is relaxed it does look pretty.

Melanin Queen: I have natural, say like 4a hair, & I have to say it's hard to manage, like to care for it almost every single day! I went natural almost 3 years ago. Yes my hair is healthier now than when it was relaxed, but my hair is just so thick & dry that sometimes it wears me out! And I know that's what I'm gonna have to deal with if you have natural hair. So I keep my hair in protective styles like finger coils, since my hair is naturally coily. But I'm hoping that it'll get better!

Inez G: I feel like it’s only hard to manage to people when you don’t know how to do your natural hair, especially when you never dealt with natural hair. Natural hair isn’t hard to manage it’s just different from what society thinks is acceptable so people say it’s hard to manage

Treasure: Well, I have 4c low porosity TWA and I don't use all day on hair, I have better things to do and my hair turns out really fine.

polin: I was brought up with a natural hair routine so I can't have an opinion but I think if you care for your hate it's not that hard.

D. Joseph: Yes it is. But guess what, I had to learn. I’ve been natural all my life. I am 19 years old and I love my Afro curls

Lujayn Othman: for me I find transitioning hair is very hard to manage because of the 2 different textures especially when ur hair is growing out more & more.. but im big chopping soon and I hope that changes!

Momo Mon'amie: I've been natural for about five to six years and i can say i struggle on my wash days lol. It takes about six hours to wash my hair, detangle it, and put on 3 layers of product. And that includes conditioning waiting time, and deep conditioning waiting time, some days it takes longer depending on how many things i put in my hair (like spraying on aloe vera juice for example) and how tangled and dry it is. BUT- I do move slowly so that may be why it takes so long. Then add at least another 12 hours for drying time. I can FORGET leaving the house if the product in my hair hasn't dried. And don't get me started on how long detangling takes if i get lazy and let my hair sit and get dry. I once had somewhere important to go and my hair didn't have enough time to dry so when i took out my twists it was a giant, damp curl-less afro that i didn't know how to style. I was frustrated. Throughout the day it started shrinking to my head too. And another day i had to go to a funeral and i tried to do my hair the night before but my product didn't have enough time to set so when i took my twists out in the morning i had WHITE CAST. Like, my hair was basically white because of all the product. Firstly, i still attended that funeral- white cast and all. And Second, i ditched the product i was using because i'd been scarred for life. I know my hair better now though, and that i can't put certain things like oils in it before i have to go somewhere because they'll prolong my hair's drying process. As opposed to hating it, i want to see how healthy i can make it, how long it can grow. I'm trying to see how far i can take this natural hair journey.

Dana Fujii: I have 3b hair and it’s easy to manage. Divide in two halves, wash, condition, finger detangle, and add leave-in. Blot excess water, and air dry. Twenty to twenty five minutes tops, every three days.

Rooted Locs: its not hard to manage...but theres this tradeoff between wearing my hair out (wild, fabulous and gravity-defying) and risking knots, tangles and breakage

AS: When I was younger I found it hard to manage because I didn’t know how to take care of it. I didn’t know what products to use and now that I’m older I often have to order products from America. When I cut my hair for the first time it helped. I was able to start again from scratch. I don’t think my hair is hard to manage but it is without information.

La Original: I don’t think natural hair is hard to manage if you know what your doing.

Josina Miles: I went natural in the 90s when it wasn't popular to be natural. The hard part was trying to make it look not so natural with tons of products. Buying and trying a new product every week was insane. I'm still natural but I only use one product now, sometimes none.

brianna hughes: It’s only hard because most of us never used worked with our textures before so it’s a learning experience. Once you figure out what works for your hair it’s easy.

Thither Shook: As someone with 3 type hair, I actually would kill to have a day with 4 type hair. And I like the women who have relaxers who stay true and know that they have 4 type hair. 4 type hair is beautiful to me, I really don’t know why people or even blacks who hate the texture them self can’t see it.

Avion Hay: I can’t do natural hair, my hairs to nappy and I can’t take the pain...yet I love to see girls rocking their own natural hair. Sad life

Delicia: Yesterday it took me 9 hours 46 mins to do my hair from take down ,wash, and style because of the style ( mini braids to wash/ detangle to cornrows). It's hard to manage because of the time invested. But ehh I chill and watch some Netflix or listen to music.

Moon Goddess: At first I was going to say yes, but I guess it's just more time consuming & a bit confusing. I let my relaxer grow out & just kept cutting until it was gone, though I have made it harder for myself by bleaching my hair. I can't use the same products for my natural hair that I did for my relaxed & my bleached hair requires more attention, but I'm learning. It's a learning experience, one that I appreciate. I wouldn't go back.

Ashley Baly: Yes my natural hair is harder to manage because the detangling process is much more time consuming than straight hair.... but that DEFINITELY does not mean that I hate my natural hair.

carmay3600: I have 4b hair. When I had permed hair it took about 45 minutes from wash to style to do my shoulder length hair. When my natural hair was about 2 inches it took about 15 minutes to do my hair. Now that I have shoulder length natural hair it takes so long to wash and detangle and style that I have to take a break. So it is easily around 2 hours. More if I wear it in an Afro. My curl pattern is So tight that there is almost no space in between my ringlets which makes it hard to detangle.

WakeupGrandOwl: Oh, it is hard. I have 3a-3b mix hair and even that is a pain in the arse to get to look the way I want. Keeping it curly is a lot of time and effort. I just wear it straight for the most part.

Shaina Jay: ive been natural my whole life and im not bout to let sister say its not hard to manage lmaoooo

Mulan: Single strand knots make it difficult for me because all it does is pull out my hair and then I get obsessive over them. That’s the only issue I have with my hair

Christine Awuor: I literally do my natural hair in like 1 -2 hours. 30min detangling, 5 min washing, 30min deep conditioning and another 5 rinsing. Then I go to sleep and let it dry. Why do take for ever??

herpderpy: Wow. Chick with the freckles needs to have SEVERAL seats and speak for herself and herself alone! I LOVE my hair, but that doesn't mean that maintaining it can't be tedious and time consuming. There are also some aspects of my hair that I don't like at times (low porosity, fine strands, 3 textures), and everyone has a hair struggle due to at least one of those qualities. "Natural hair" ranges from the medium to tight curly to the kinky coily and this woman has the nerve to act as though none of it can be challenging to manage?! What a judgmental, self-righteous, condescending attitude. To be fair, I will concede that managing natural hair becomes easier once you have the right technique tools and products that address the attributes of your hair, but even then it can still be demanding for many people. I don't spend long detangling my hair at all, but all of the deep conditioning, styling and drying time still push my wash days into 90+ minutes! Not everyone wants to spend that much time on their hair once or twice and week like I do and I don't blame them!

fandom trash: i personally think its hard to manage. Before i cut my hair, my hair it was just so thick and curly that i couldnt brush or comb it without breaking both of them. I could not detangle my hair to save my life, even when i did use detangling sprays. I couldn't even style my hair even though i had the products i needed to do so. I would have to wake up an hour before school just to do my hair and even that wasn't enough time. so yeah it can be hard to manage depending on the person but it's still a lot of work for everyone no matter what

Mimi: 4c chick with the freckles...keep that same energy if/when your 4c hair starts to get long. My hair is quite long and I will definitely say IT IS HARD TO MANAGE. The unbelievable shrinkage is a pain in the ass. My hair is waist length but will shrink up so short that it won’t even touch my neck. You can imagine the tangles that creates. In order to keep my hair as manageable as possible, it must remain stretched at all times. If it shrinks up? Detangling increases by maybe 2 hours. Even after detangling, it’s _still_ tangled to some degree; it’s never completely detangled unless it’s blown out/straight. Me acknowledging this about my hair does not mean in any way, shape or form that I “hate” my hair, like Freckles claims. That’s bullshit. If I hated it, I wouldn’t be natural. Move around, sis.

lady dulayne: Its uber annoying to me when other naturals try to down the ones who still struggle with their natural hair. Everyone's hair is different. Some will be easier. Others not soo much. I have been natural for going on 7 years and I am not afraid to say that after all this time, experimentation and all, yes I do find my natural texture challenging and much more work than when I was relaxed. Even the simplest styles (a bun, ponytail or roller set) takes soooo much more effort and often tails is a total fail with my 4A, tightly curly, fine, thin and low density hair. When I was relaxed, I did my own hair with ease. I relaxed, colored, pressed, did highlights and every type of curl with little issue. Now, none of those things work and I feel I need to seek a stylist for help. None of this has been easier and that includes so-called "wash-n-gos" which still require 20 mins of styling.

Y. Harris: No a nice alternative to perms is to hotcomb straighten it✅ ...be sure to use hair heat protection products

Monique Williams: I think the hardest part is figuring out what works for you and how to style it .after that it’s a piece of cake.

Shadow Fox: I have EXTREMELY "kinky" hair and a tender scalp, but if you just don't allow your hair to get all tangled up, then you will find it easier. Just comb it out for the day and then part and tie it together at night. I'm a dude and I do this a large portion of the month so hey it can be done.

4GlutenFreeCurls: My hair is less complicated as a natural. I have simplified my routine based on my needs and stopped watching people who take hours to do their hair. My hair is thriving now and I love being natural. I will never go back to chemicals.

Chantal Phillips: Although Nikia's comments may have been a bit abrasive, I agree with what she is saying to a degree. Growing up, my parents relaxed my hair every now and then because of the claim that it was "difficult to manage". This caused a lot of damage to my hair, and to my self-esteem as a girl with type 4 hair. I think black hair takes more time to learn how to manage it, but that is because before the era of YouTube, we didn't have access to the same plethora of resources and black girl hair blogs that teach us helpful methods. The same goes for natural hair products specifically for black women. That market is booming now, but was not as widely understood 20 years ago. I've walked into many salons to get my hair cut, and most of the time, they didn't have someone who knew how to handle my hair so I just learned how to cut and manage it myself. The society and beauty industry that we live in and around makes it harder to manage our hair, not necessarily our hair itself.

dan tan: Yes it is compared to other hair types. Especially on to sides because they get matted and tangled when you sleep. It's very unforgiving if you skip your routine. I am 4c though but I still like how my hair looks.

Sonte'.FroLocs: Nah, natural hair is pretty easy to manage, it's just time consuming. I have super tight coils so at first detangling it was hard for me and I wouldn't do it unless I got someone else to do it, but then I got a detangling comb and the game changed. It became easier to do my hair, all you need to do is shampoo, condition, and moisturize it. If you want to do all those fancy hairstyles then it's optional, but you don't really need to do anything extra to your natural hair, I find my curly fro to already be a style. Personally it's not hard to manage and I don't mind spending about six hours or more on wash day, but then again my hair is pretty thick so it could take less for others, besides that, natural hair will flourish if you take care of it. There's no such thing as bad hair, just healthy hair or neglected hair, the end.

C M: Yes it is hard to manage. For me anyways, it takes years to do. 1:42 I don't know what she's talking about. I love my hair. Everyone has different hair. Everyone has a different hair texture. It's hard for some people to manage their hair. That doesn't mean they're just making excuses or that they hate their hair. I think that was a truly ignorant statement.

Pseudonym: IMHO, natural hair isn't harder to manage, you just gotta get used to it! It used to take me forever to wash my hair, and now it takes me 15 - 20 minutes.

Ese Kanayo: Amen to the woman with freckles! Once you unlearn old habits and learn the new ones you are good to go! I have been natural since I was 11 years old, and I was the first one in my family to go natural. I was alone. I began by washing my hair and blow drying it, not even conditioning it. That’s when I used to say “my hair is so hard to manage”, but the more I educated myself and gave my hair the patience that it’s texture needs, the less I found myself saying it was hard to manage. So im sorry any one who tells me that their hair is innately “hard to manage” has lost the plot. If I go could do it age 11 by myself with dense 4c hair, anyone can.

Stephanie Maybin: I don't think that natural hair is hard to manage. I think each hair texture has challenges to deal with cleaning and styling. To compare one to the other to call one easy and the other hard devalues them both. All hair textures have value and beauty. Diversity is one thing that makes life interesting. How BORING life would be if we all looked the same and all had the same hair texture!

D'antae Johnson: I agree with Nikia it's bullshit in the beginning you're so accustomed to seeing these long washday routines that tell you you have to do this & x,y,z but it's not worth it. You don't have to I feel the more you learn about your hair you find it's simple

Richelle Giles: I plan on getting my relaxer back after transitioning for a year & being natural for a year because it's just more time consuming. Personally, my hair does not look good unless I twist it in smaller sections. That takes me over an hour every night to do... I just don't have the time or the energy anymore. Getting a relaxer doesn't mean you hate your natural hair. I love mine but if I'm not going to take the time out to keep it up then why have it?

Chelsea Roses: I actually like these kinds of videos because you can teach people who don't have natural hair or whoever is just curious (or even ignorant) about it. What makes it better too is that there's women with different textures and styles so it's not just one opinion. Like people ask these questions and some natural haired girls just don't feel like explaining the whole thing lol, and here we have this video and others :)

Sonja S: For me no. It’s just different from relaxed hair. It’s not difficult at all for me to detangle. It’s easier for me to detangle my natural hair during wash day than my relaxed hair. My relaxed hair would tangle up like crazy when wet. I can comb through my natural hair like butter when it’s wet and conditioned.

nubienne34: I have 4c hair texture and it's not hard to manage. I'm loc'd now and it's even easier. I think it depends on the person.

Anna Davis: Hard to manage, HECK NO! I love it and would never go back to relaxers, not that relaxers are bad just not for me anymore! Natural is no harder than relaxed hair.

Ash M: Once you learn your wash routine and how to retain moisture, no It's not hard. My frustration is detangling. Sometimes it is quick process but majority of times it takes hours. I notice as well that when I need a trim, it's a nightmare to detangle. But, all in all. It's not bad. Only if you are new to it or just plain hate your hair.

gigglyfitzgirl: People do all this extra stuff and make it harder than it needs to be. Keep it simple.

sheeshaa: Natural hair is not hard to manage at all in my opinion, it's just different. Everyone's hair has its own learning curve. Once you learn yours, you'll know exactly what your hair needs. Other than shampooing and deep conditioning, there isn't anything that I do for my natural hair that is the same as my relaxed hair. It just takes time and experimenting
