Drugstore Curly Hair Product Battle & Review | Cantu Vs Sheamoisture

I am finally comparing two popular lines of affordable drugstore curly hair products that are humidity-resistant for frizz-free results, CANTU VS SHEA MOISTURE. This video is a first impression UNBIASED product review of several products from both lines styled on my curls at the same time to determine the longevity, pros, and cons of each brand in a true side-by-side compHAIRison. I reviewed many products (hence the length of this video) and keep you updated on how it lasts throughout the week and ultimately, which products I recommend.. and which ones I don't. So stay tuned to the end! Thanks for watching!

What'S good everybody and welcome back to my channel unless you're new here and in that case it's a pleasure to meet you. I am your main girl Mel. Now today's video is going to be a battle of the breads. This is a type of video on my channel, where I compare contrast and review to brands. At the same time now the brands I'm going to be reviewing today are some of the most popular brands in the curly girl world and also two of my most highly requested product reviews. So without further ado, today we are going to review Cantu versus shea moisture. I just wanted to write it, but it's shame waster. I picked up a bunch of products from both lines, some of their most popular some of the ones that I thought would be interesting to test out and review to see what kind of results we can get. Who will be superior? Can to do it? Yes, you can now. For the most part, this is going to be a first impressions review. I have not tried most of these products. I have not used them all together in action and I'm really excited to be able to share each and every product with you guys talked about. The benefits talked about how to use them and even follow up throughout the week to see how it holds up in the hair alrighty stepping into the shower. We will be reviewing the first product because she needs a clubs boom. First, up for review is the complete conditioning co-wash from Ken hmm. You see I'm pretty excited to test this out, because it claims that it will help to remove build-up. So when I take a look at the ingredients, I'm looking for some special clarifying cleansing ingredients and I do see tetrasodium EDTA. This ingredients is a key leading ingredient. It is used in products to remove mineral build-up and, oh my, my hair really is quite dry. So I hope that this will clarify, but be gentle, so I pop the cap, give it a whiff and OH, if you like, pina coladas you're getting caught in the rain. This product is gon na, be for you. It smells like a pina colada. It is quite a creamy consistency. First, I'm testing the lather by massaging it in my hands, but so far no suds. So then I test it on my hair hair, hopefully not my face god. I just did my makeup. I focused mostly I'm massaging my scalp, but I still didn't really feel like. There was any kind of lather or much cleansing so then I added some water because when in doubt before, adding more product, add water that definitely helped to do the trick in emulsifying it. It made it much easier for me to work through my hair. Specifically, I wanted to focus on my scalp as well. You know, even though this is a co-wash, we still want to be thorough and if it's hard for you to get into your scalp with just your fingers, bring out the big guns and after lots of massaging from top to bottom, I even used it a little Bit to start brushing through my ends, and I must say after my final rinse you know I felt up the squeak enos and my hair felt pretty good. Like okay, I see you my hair felt clean but still dry. I need a good deep conditioner this wash, so I actually have two deep conditioning masks to show you both some of my favorites from Shea Moisture. First, I shall apply the jamaican black, castor oil, strengthen and restore treatment masque. Now this is an interesting because it kind of smells like play-doh. That'S one little little downfall to it, but it is a strengthening masque. It has a couple different proteins in it, but it is also very hydrating. It is a very thick, very rich, creamy product. My hair was pretty tangled, so you know it was a bit much to work through, but eventually I brush it all through and I clip it away to test out the other side. Ah, the manuka, honey and mafura oil mask now. If you aren't sure how much I actually love this product, look how much I have left this mask is the bomb and it smells much better than the jamaican black, castor oil. It doesn't have any weird smell. It'S very pleasant, light and sweet, and, interestingly enough, this side of my head was a little easier for me to detangle. It didn't take as long watch that little instant curl action boom, okay and let's clip it away, also clean my brushes hello. This is four days of hairs. I'Ll leave this in until I'm done, filming the intro haha, probably about three hours or so we don't know. What'S good everybody, what's good everybody, what's good everybody, three hours, late, okay, maybe I'll! Do the intro media one more time? No! No Mel, you did it, you did it. Okay, just the first couple: I need to rinse okay, so my hair is freshly rinsed. This is the jamaican black, castor oil side. This is the manuka, honey and mafura oil side. Honestly, they both make my hair feel really good they're, both very effective, deep conditioners. And if I had to choose one, I would choose the manuka honey and referral intensive hydration mask only because I, like the smell better. So now it's time to start styling, which one first eeny meeny miny moe catch a tiger by the toe for the big toe Shea Moisture. It is so, let's get started, I'm clipping away the other half of my head for when we use the can two products and let's go ahead and start with our prep style and finish so. First, we need to apply our prep product, which would be our leave-in conditioner. Now I have three different options. I got the Jamaican black, castor oil, strengthen and restore leave-in conditioner. This is Ana tub. This is a very thick super super thick buttery type of consistency. This reparative leaving conditioner softens and detangles, while leaving a protective barrier that helps control frizz. It is rich in shea butter and coconut oil, as well as castor seed oil. So this is a very heavy type of leave-in. Conditioner has a little extra something fruity in there. It still smells a little bit like play-doh, but not as bad. Now. Another option I got was the daily hydration leave-in treatment. This is a much more liquidy product is more of milky type of leave-in conditioner and, of course, it also has coconut oil and shea butter, and, although it is in the name, this actually doesn't smell. Like coconut oil may be very slight coconut note, but it smells more like a floral fragrance perfume and my final option is the sugarcane extract and meadow foam seed, simple free miracle, styler leave-in treatment, that's a whole mouthful. Now this product is also more on the liquidy side, but is not as runny as the coconut oil leave-in. It also does not have coconut oil. I know some people are sensitive to coconut oil. Their hair just does not agree with it. They do not like coconut oil in their products or anytime they are leaving in their hair. So I thought this would be interesting to grab to see what it is like, and let's give this one whiff. Oh, that smells nice that smells really nice. It smells light. I can't put my finger on what that smells like, but not overpowering at all, not nearly as fragrance as the other two now I still want to be reviewing these for you guys, so we're gon na do some swatches they're all so different. Now I think, based on my hair type, because it is fine to medium, but I also have a medium to high density of it. I have a good amount. I really want to go in with this one. I think I like this one, the best it's perfect in between and it is coconut oil free, I'm gon na spray, this all over beware! This is a very intense spritzer. I just sprayed my mirror and it's just she ain't moving. Now I do want to keep my hair pretty saturated with water throughout this entire experience, because of the nature of these products with really rich and heavy ingredients like these products have, when your hair is nice and wet, it makes it easier to distribute the product throughout And hopefully, use less okay so far, so good. That gave my hair a lot of slip, I'm going to section it away, so I can style. I usually section everything above my temples so onto our styling product, I'm so excited to finally try the infamous coconut and hibiscus curl enhancing smoothie with silk protein and neem oil. This is such a popular products from shea moisture that I've never gotten to try until today. So this is a very special moment mm-hmm. So this smells like the name. It smells a little coconutty, it's most kind of like hibiscus a little bit floral II and it is thick any time I'm using a product with this type of consistency that doesn't it doesn't move. I start really small, so I'm just gon na finger dip, literally just finger dip, whatever dips on my finger, make sure your hands are clean. I'M going to apply this so far so good. Now, I would add more if my hair did not feel satiated like if I couldn't feel any product. If there were some areas that felt dry and especially because a lot of these products are catered to more highly textured hair, that is very thick, it can feel coarser. It can also be very fine, but in general, because the texture is so tight. Sometimes you need a little bit extra product to help lay it down. If that's the goal so definitely apply more. If you need to okay so now the definition is there, let's lock it in with our gel, it was only right to get the coconut and hibiscus curling gel souffle with a gobby nectar and flaxseed, because it's from the same line, let's take a look at this Texture, I just bought these products, so they all came sealed satisfying, so the souffle is more like jello. Why is it so hard define curls while controlling friends with this hybrid oil, gel souffle, styler, formulated with coconut and flax seed oils apply sparingly on wet hair? Now I've experienced a lot of different products in my day, but recently there's been a lot of firsts, and this is a first. This is like hard jello. I don't even know if I can work with that, like it's gon na be chunky. This is the only Shea Moisture gel I could get and I couldn't get any the Moose's. So I got ta try to work with it. Okay, okay, okay, hold on hold on. I got it to do something kind of melted a little bit. So let's go ahead and very gently apply this to my hair. Well, listen! Listen to hear! If you couldn't hear that it's squishing, they can hear the moisture super SuperDuper interesting! You know on the bright side, I think if you were traveling, this would be very easy to take with you on carry on, because it's not a liquid, it's literally a solid now. Would this be good if you're traveling to the tropics? How will it do in humidity we're gon na find all that out in a couple of days, stay tuned and moving on to side to let's take a dive into? Can two products? Okay, so we're nice and wet. Yet again, let's start off with our prep product. This is the leave-in conditioning cream for natural hair. This product does have a higher concentration of shea butter. It is higher up on the ingredients and there is coconut oil in here as well, so, okay, no seal but huh. Now it doesn't smell as much like pina colada as the co washed it, but this is the consistency very thick, very buttery, we're gon na go in with these same finger technique because we want to really start slow. This is super duper thick. No, if you look at that consistency compared to some of the other products that were more slippery, this almost feels like it's whipped know. If you can see that now, it says to apply a generous amount of a product to ends of damp hair and work towards the roots here that unless your roots are really frizzy and coarse start on your ends, comb through for even distribution do not rinse. That'S what I'm talking about so to follow up. We are going to be applying the coconut curling cream, which defines moisturizes and strengthens strands. Now I love a product, see strengthen, but then don't have any proteins in the ingredients. I mean, I guess when it is super moisturizing and it's blocking and moisture it will maintain good elasticity in the hair, which is stronger but I'll, see any strengthening protein treatments in this product. However, there is petroleum in here, so this is going to be a heavy one, oh yeah, and it smells like peanut Canales, just a little finger dip honestly, just like just the tip. This is how much I'm putting pudding. This is more of that silky texture. I was talking about this is much more slippery silky and we're just going to apply that okay, so we're defined, I feel like my hair, didn't have, although it's just as wet it didn't have as much slip like. I didn't like the feeling of it as much when I was brushing through these Shea Moisture products, but anyways. Let'S walk in that definition with our gel. We have two different types of gel here. One is the define and shine custard. So pardon me not a gel. It is a custard that delivers brilliant shine and perfect hold, and I also have the mega hold styling stay glue, gel mm-hmm, I'm so intrigued to try them both, let's swatch them out. First, the custard whoa. I don't want that. I can't even show you hold on, that is extremely watery whoa and there it goes. There was some in the lid. It'S dripping, it's dripping. This says: apply to soaking wet hair in small sections, smooth each section with fingers beginning at the root and work towards the end for additional moisture and curl definition mix with the can to coconut curling cream. Now this says to mix it with that like mix together. Maybe I should have mixed it together to get a better consistency, because this is really really watery, but it is supposed to be ultra moisturizing and it has no mineral oil, sulfates parabens so comes out at leats. Looking care paper, probably there's that one and this is the mega - hold styling glue gel whoa. It'S really like glue Wow, hmm, hmm! I have an idea. It might just be crazy, but I think I want to mix the two together. Is it a bad idea, because this literally is gooey and gluey very interested to see the hold, I'm also very interested to see how it holds up in humidity, as it says it does see what happens when we mix them together? Oh wow, I'm making a big mess, but things are happening and I'm gon na do it very gently: glaze glazing over the crab hands to kiss the ends of the curls okay. So now that both sides are in, I say we start casting some bets. I mean both sides look really good so far and we'll be right back to see our day1 results. Huh we're back, I'm gon. Na be honest. I had to diffuse a lot of the way after about 10 minutes of air drying. I just felt a little way down. Gravity was definitely doing it. These products are heavy, but nonetheless we are back with four is free, diffused, hair literally perfect. The cast is still in we're gon na fluff that, but if you want to know the best way to diffuse your hair with zero frizz in case you haven't already seen it my iconic diffuser video and the mistakes you were making. Is it both now technically? If you really want to seal this all in when you are scrunching out that gel crunch, you can always apply a little bit of oil or serum to help one soften out crunchy fuel and to really help to seal. In that moisture, I'm not going outside and there's already a lot of oils in these products, so we're just gon na we're gon na we're gon na keep it this way until I do go outside, but I'm not going anywhere right now, I'll be home indefinitely anyway. Shut up milk, Oh righty, perfect timing, Amanda, we have a live, judge men de which side side. This side looks like it's fluffier and you don't have as much hold uh-huh, but you saw a good definition. That'S how you definitely have more mould mm-hmm. And how can you tell there's more hold they look of it as in the curls yeah, they don't look as fluffy. They look skinnier mm-hmm they're being held together more exactly so um. Do you want to feel No? This is so much better. It'S better than I get her to do it, so you can hear it from someone else. Yeah just just throw your hands clean! Yes, okay, continue! Sorry, give it a little yeah. Okay, you can feel the product. Does it feel like a lot a little bit? It doesn't feel gross no like it's there, but it's not gross. No and smoother. You still good gold. Oh that feels better. That feels better now. Can I guess, what to a sandwich which side is which that's the canned tuna sushi and moisture it gets spicier know who it is shook right now, really this video keeps taking a whole bunch of turns this is can, and this is shea moisture, so they both Look good in different ways: they are both a little heavy so compared to using lighter more water-based products in my hair, that is fine and also quite porous. I don't get as much volume when I use parts like these. However, this is on day one results in a couple days after live with it. After I go outside we'll see how the hare reacts we'll see if it grows in volume or if it gets flatter and flatter and we'll determine the first factor. But where is the frizz right now? Nothing? The definition is definitely there yeah for both say it's there, all righty everybody quick update for you. This is only day two, but it's the end of day two and I conducted a little experiment because, right now the weather is not really cooperating with me, but I really wanted to test out what these curls would do in humidity. So I'm talking like we're in the tropics, so I imitated that environment by steaming my hair. Okay, if you guys watch my last video using a steamer, has become my ultimate go-to way to refresh my hair, but I usually only use it for a minute just to infuse a little bit of hydration back into my hair. I used it for about 10 minutes. Just infusing my hair with a lot of moisture as if it was like really humid outside. I know spending time outdoors, so we've got shea moisture over here. These are what the curls are looking like and ken tool over here. Okay, so I did break some rules here right. I didn't actually seal everything in with an oil, as we learned in my updated spring routine, where I explained the elusive step is very important for sealing things in when you're going into humidity, but a lot of people don't know that until now and then so you Watched that full video after this most people would you know style as I did and be on their way, and this is the problem with that, especially in humidity. Now both sides are soft. Actually, the residue has really worn off. So I don't feel like my hair. Is really greasy, which is excellent, but I would say that the Shea Moisture side is more frizzy and have lost a little bit more of that definition. Now, why could this be when we compare the ingredients in our stylers, both the smoothie and the coconut cream are mineral oil, free and mineral oil is one of like the best sealing occlusives. However, and this this was a little misleading, although the can to is mineral oil free, there is petroleum and petroleum, it does the same type of thing very sealing and it held down that frizz a lot more, even though there is glycerin in both of these products. The occlusives in them, or at least in the cam to you really did your thing: honey as well with the gel. This gel did say that it was humidity resistant and yet there is glycerin in the top three ingredients. I'M depressed, I'm pretty impressed anyways. That was just a quick little update. I will come back in about a day or two with a final review and maybe we'll figure out. Why Shay be so shabby? What'S in this Joe stay tuned? Alright, everybody we're back today is my day for, and I think it's time that we give a final verdict. I really wanted to test out which brand whether shea moisture or Cantu would give better results in my hair and well, I've always recommend to judge a book by its cover, but based off of these looks after living with my hair cool. Will the winner be? It'S not a question, it's it's can, can you can you did it, you did it against all odds. You pleasantly surprised me now, although the Cantu products made my hair, look and lasts a little bit better than the Shea Moisture products I still have some reviewing to do. I have a couple recommendations for you all and some rejects so, let's get into which products I actually liked going back to our wash day. This little baby right here smells like pinky was a win. It was a hit. I think it was great if you're looking to smell like a tropical drink, I will definitely be using this throughout the summer. I it's a really good option if you are swimming, if you were out and about washing your hair more frequently, because you will still get a decent cleanse while still being a little bit gentle and I'm pleased that after four days my scalp still feels good. It doesn't feel extra greasy or anything. I don't have any crazy it geez. So I really like this product. However anytime you are using a co-wash, I would still always follow up with a conditioner. It wasn't completely conditioning, but it was you know, gentle cleansing. That is when you work it through as thoroughly as I did. You'Ve really got to work it and maneuver and add water and massage and be really thorough, and then you get a decent claims. However, this is not replaced a clarifying shampoo. I would not only use this. I would use this if I'm washing a lot, but you still need another kind of real shampoo, cleanser clarifier to get that balance. Now i already talked about the deep conditioners there in the shower. I'D only grab them. I do recommend the manuka, honey and mafura oil. If it wasn't clear. Obviously I use it a lot more. It smells better, it still has protein, but it's very moisturizing and it's great of all the leaving conditioners that I've used. I think they all have a purpose for different hair types for my hair type and again, if you don't like coconut oil in your products, I really like this leave-in conditioner. I think I had the perfect consistency. It was not too thick, not too runny. It gave my hair a really nice flip and it is protein free, so it's coconut oil free and protein free. I definitely would recommend this leave-in conditioner. If you need extra moisture on your wash days, very so glad they found one because the other ones now the daily hydration leave-in treatment, this one is so liquidy, it does have coconut oil and it does have protein. So if you are okay with that, this could be a good option for you, especially if you have finer hair because it it is very liquidy, so it should be lighter weight, but keep in mind I mean it still has those ingredients in it. If your hair does get over moisturized quickly, but you need extra softness, I could as a good refresh, because it also has protein to help strengthen and not get too much twice so daily hydration. I guess you could reuse it not bad. Now these bad boys were both heavy hitters. These are really thick, leave-in conditioners and based on the ingredients, I would say that the Shea Moisture is better. The second ingredient here is that castor oil - it does also have a lot of protein, because this is a strengthening, leave-in conditioner. But if those are the things you're looking for and you do have really thick coarse, extremely curly hair, then I like it okay side by side, the smoothie and the coconut curling cream. You know if I smell them. They'Re both very similar. The Cantu product is a little thicker and consistency. I would say it's a little bit more hydrating. It does have that super sealing ingredient petroleum. That being said, I probably wouldn't really use either of these products and my hair too much unless I want it get drunk. Oh, my god, Isis worried. Oh, they smell like a pina colada. I should really close these. They both made my hair feels super similar, but again, based on the results, I would say can't do. Okay, now of the gels, I feel, like my reactions, cut, let you know how I felt about it. Let'S start with this souffle, this is jelly after using this product. I did some research to find out if this is normal and according to a lot of the reviews on the Shea Moisture website for this product, there's some tea, I'm not quite sure. What'S going on with Shea Moisture, it seems this product is not what it used to be. I don't know if this has gone bad. I don't know why it would be so hard. I just bought it, but all in all, I can't recommend the shell. It was too hard to work with. There are other options out there do the same kind of job, that's the team and, lastly, the finishers. These two products did the job I mean they did. They did their job. I have to give credit where it's due. However, I did use two and I mix it, because this consistent is really really weird. I don't know whites in a tub, it is super liquidy again is this normal for those of you that I've used this is that is that supposed to be normal? This job was super super thick. I think it could be great if you're, trying to slicked back a style but too thick to put in like a wash and go so mixing them together, really giving the results, although that's kind of a lot of work, if you're. Okay with that and you love these results, because I do love these results, then these two, these two will do it for you and with that I hope this review did it for you. I know we went over a lot. This video is a little bit long, but I hope you found it helpful at the end of the day. It'S not just the product, it's how you use it. For some of these, I really had to make it work, but I'm really pleased that, after using all of these products, I did still get good results. If you do want to take up any of these products I'll make it really easy for you, everything will be linked in the description box below, so you can check it out further into it, and now I I'm gon na give, I wonder what product battle. I should do next. If you have any ideas, let me know drop it down below and please let me know if you want to see more videos like this. You know I got you each and every texture, Tuesday. What'S a brand new video, this has been the drugstore product battle with your main girl Mel's, and I am out peace. I don't know what's going on, but right now can to feel it in the air too. Tonight I can see it in your eyes. Look at these curls look at Luger, bye-bye

shicadelic: I would love to see a video on drugstore products that are not advertised for curls, but work really well for them. Here in Europe, we don't have much choice

Mona Carriedo: Thank you, thank you! I’m starting my transition! Little worried since I’m 55, wondering how the world will accept my curls, but excited nonetheless. (I’ve been straightening my hair for 25 plus years). Wish me luck!

Brazil McCray: I cannot stress this enough...she is the FUNNIEST and most ENTERTAINING curly hair influencer! Love her!

Esperancita: wait shea moisture is drugs store thats like expensive top tier to me

sam M: shea moisture is one of the only curly hair brands i have available where i live. i have the curl enhancing smoothie and i cannot get enough of it. it may be 'heavy' but it gives me the most volume out of anything i have tried.

Marilène W: "cantu do it? yes shea can!" LMAO i love her!

a. randi: I work at a store that sells Cantu and I don't think I've ever seen it that runny. Either that was a bad batch or it was left in a high heat area for too long where some ingredients just melted. But I will say it shouldn't be that liquidy.

Marisela Rodriguez: For those saying that Mell’s Sheamoisture gel shouldn’t be that consistency, many of Sheamoistures products have changed formulas. My holy grail hair cream was Sheamoisture Coconut Hibiscus but the formula has changed for the worse in my opinion. Just an FYI for those who don’t know about the reformulation of some of their products.

Emily Snyder: I still don’t trust Cantu, it’s made my hair really dry in the past when I used it for a long period of time, and the same thing has happened to a lot of people I know ‍♀️ love Shea moisture though

Vidaliz: Just a reminder for the people reading the comments, remember that these products work differently on everyone’s hair

Heidi Rivera: The Shea moisture soufflé is definitely a liquid syrup type of feeling. Super weird when I saw it so thick

It’s Blasian: The Shea moisture made your hair look more defined to me in the end

A Aguiar: These results were really impressive, I was not expecting Cantu to do so well. Thanks Mel for showing us the curl ways

Gabrielle Barracato: I loved this video!! Cantu and shea moisture are some of my favorites. I always lowkey preferred Cantu but everyone would hate on it lol. I will say that the Cantu gel custard is not normally that liquidy. At least I’ve never seen it like that. But I’m glad cantu took the win in this video!!

Cara Copland: When I CANNOT BE BOTHERED beginning my wash day, I watch a couple of Mells videos and I'm ON IT! ✌️♥️

Tiffany &: One of my hidden gems from Cantu is the Curling Cream from the Cantu Care for Kids line. It rivals my curling smoothie from Shea Moisture, it's just that good! Gives me enough definition while keeping my hair soft to the touch and it keeps that hold for many days. The best thing is: it's only about $3-4! Definitely give it a try if you can find it

Mir eaJ: There was a time I used Shea Moisture and i didn’t like because I love in the tropic, specially in Puerto Rico. So, as you could also experience, my hair went all frizzy. I’m glad you made this video because I thought it was doing something wrong, so thank you and btw, the Shea moisture gel was a different consistency, extremely liquid and oily. It took almost a day to dry completely

Marcy Perez: They definitely changed the chemistry on the Shea moisture soufflé. I used it years ago and I loved it. I bought it recently and returned it because I didn’t like it and couldn’t work with it.

J H: No one: Not even Bob the Builder: Mell: Cantu do it? Yes, Shea can!

Holly: Ok , I was literally laughing out loud during this video! But these product reviews are what I need right now. I’m a new curly girl and still learning.

Melissa Madrid: I’m in my LATE 30’s and my hair changed texture after puberty. I JUST realized I have been taking care of my curls all wrong. You make it so easy to learn how to take care of them. Thank you!

Tristin Spargo: These are some of the only products we get in South Africa, thank you so much for reviewing! The CANTU range is a favourite, the curl activator is magical any news on Palmers in the pipeline? Keep up the good work! And Thank you for your videos!

Christie C: I love that I found you, I’m finally trying to embrace my curls. I went out and spent a lot of products you recommend. I however still have frizz, I live in FL. Under my hair is straight. You have so many products recommenced I’m feeling a little confused and overwhelmed.

Ana Diaz-Puskar: Love this review! These are the main two styling brands I come back to when I am trying more expensive products ( like Curlsmith and Deva Curl). I always thought Shea Butter was maybe better, but this was an eye opener! Also, I wish my curls lasted 4 days, but no such luck down here in Houston, TX... Have you done a review on Kinky Curly? I know it is "in between" high end products and drugstore products in terms of price point, but I find that I am LOVING the custard. Casts and holds really well, without leaving m hair feeling dry. Would love to see both you and Amanda do a seester video with that product, since it claims it works well on all hair types. Keep up the excellent work!!

Julia Pinzon: I love you, Mell! I just ordered the scalp scrubber and some invisibobbles through your Amazon list! You are always hair for us ❤

Chelsi Lopez: This video is SO helpful. I'd love to see more like it! I'm about 2-3 months in and still trying to figure out what my hair likes/dislikes, but the ingredients take so much time to remember or decipher when standing in the aisle for 20 minutes or trying to compare with 10 tabs open on the computer. So I really appreciate hearing that someone is either protein heavy or if a product tries to pull a fast one (like the mineral oil to patroleum in this video).

Maria Aparicio: I recently started transitioning and found your channel and can I just say- I'm so obsessed! so obsessed to the point that I wish texture hair Tuesdays could be everyday! I have so much more knowledge regarding hair than I was before, and I only have you to thank. And on that note- I want to see more pleaseeee! much love <3 p.s. can you make a part two explaining more how you can tell the difference between protein and hydrated hair and maybe some specific ingredients to look for? would love to know more!

Luca was my day: Thank you for these videos! I am completely lost trying to do my daughter’s curly hair and your videos are incredibly helpful!

Jadeikens (Jade the Taylor): I much prefer Cantu for my medium fine hair! My hair doesn’t work well with Shea moisture which is good cause I hate the way most of them smell ☺️ I’m obsessed with the pineapple smell of Cantu! But my mom and cousin with thick low porosity have loves Shea moisture and hates Cantu!

pais lee: So I have had "cantu [can you] do it? Yes, she-a can!" popping up in my head like an encouraging pep talk every time I look at something that I need to do. And it makes me laugh and helps with that "yeah, I got this!" feeling as I go and get that thing done, because yes, she-a can! So thanks, Mell! I tuned in for the curls, stayed for the fun energy and somehow ended up with some bonus encouragement as well. Plus my hair is beginning to have some hope now that I understand some of the basics about what to even do. (Also, apparently it is possible to pick up too many gels and styling creams and cowashes and... to not actually have any /actual conditioners/ and not even realise that this was missing. Those product aisles can be so overwhelming when you don't know what to look for...) So fixing that oversight alone has solved sooo much! So yes, my hair thanks you. I now have hair hope! Your channel is better than coffee and is amazing, Mell. Thanks a bunch!

andrea celeste: Cantu has another gel that comes in a tub and it’s amazing! I use it with the Shea moisture curling cream and it’s a great combo!

M Marz: The define and shine custard I use from Cantu is never that liquidy and I like to use it in my winter routine because it has less hold. I use the Stay Glue Gel in the summer because it's great for the hot humid air we get here down in Houston, Texas. Also you have to warm the Stay glue gel in your hands to get it to a easier to maneuver consistency. Loved your review

Emma Walcott: I've used the Shea Moisture coconut curl cream and gel souffle together on my 3b curls all of 3 times, but I could never get it to work (though the souffle I got was definitely soupier than shown here ). Very much meant for tighter curl textures, but the curl cream with a lighter gel is perfect for me when I need protein!

Kaos Creations: I had the same issue when I went to try the Shea Moisture Gel Souffle the first time, it was like a more solid jello! When I snooped on some reviews on their site and others there were a lot of unhappy customers because apparently the formula changed about a year ago? and its been solid like that since.

Kom1tto: When it comes to thicker leave in conditioner, I like to mix an ounce in a spray bottle with some distilled water. It thins it out and helps to spread it easier.

Lauren King: Cantu's Curl Activator Leave-In has been excellent for getting more curl in my hair. I used to be 3B, but certain *ahem* controversial curly company products moved it to 3A, and in some places 2C. I've been wanting to try the hair glue, because I live in a humid climate, but I can't find it locally.

Taylor Hardin: First, I love you. Second, I use the SheaMoisture gel souffle regularly and get a different consistency almost every time I buy it. The worst one I got was dry and clumpy like what you have. But usually it's more like a grape jelly consistency. I'm guessing it's how much pectin gets in the mix. Too much and it's useless.

Enid Jimenez: Your videos are life! You always make me smile and your knowledge is on point!! I don’t have curly hair (mines waivy) but my 3 year old has your beautiful locks watching your videos has helped me learn how to care for her hair and now we get complimented on her hair wherever we go. Thanks for being your beautiful self inside and out

Mia M: Love this!! Would love to see this become a series (or even be featured!). My hair is wavy-curly (mostly 2b), low-medium porosity, med-high density and I think the texture is medium maybe coarse.

Cara Ziegel: yeah they messed up the souffle gel recently. it used to be softer. you can microwave it with water to thin it out and make it more usable. I actually sometimes use this as a one-and-done styler in the winter

Sammy Metcalfe: I’m still getting used to my chemo curls but your videos have 100% helped me! Hubby doesn’t even have to look in the Amazon package to know it’s hair products now I’d love a video about creating extra volume (and keeping it!)

Elena Castillo: Can we all appreciate her singing at the end!? Lol ❤️ Thank you thank you so much! It was so helpful. I'm on a new more natural curly hair journey. I've always loved my curls, but I think my styling had too much crunch plus flakes from hairspray. I've watched every single one of your videos! I needed this one to complete the missing piece.

Kristin Ann Solien: I love Cantu, but it’s a tinge heavy for me. Shear made my hair break off! I had actual holes in my style where the hair had broken in clumps. I never knew how to pronounce “Chelating”!!!

Taylor Richart: I just started following you & copying your styling process & I am shook! My curls have never felt so light & moisturized. Thank you for sharing your knowledge & for being so funny!

Lilah: I live in South Korea and boy oh boy finding curly hair friendly stuff. I decided to start looking after my curls properly to grow them out (they're not too picky while short but there's a reason I cut my hair...). I spent the last few days researching stuff and finally managed to get a decent list of products to try and find. They're not advertised for curly hair but hey, I can't be picky!

Cynthia: Idk why so many curly girls don’t like Cantu I personally love it, it was the first brand I used when I started transitioning. I even got my mom and boyfriend to use it on their curly hair. Both brands have some amazing gems. The Shea deep conditioners you mentioned are bomb!

Natalie Dawn Tirado-Buehl: Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this review! It just so happens that I bought the EXACT SAME PRODUCTS the weekend before your video aired and just watched a week later. Too bad I waited and struggled the whole week trying to make them work on my 3C/4C hair. Your video would have saved me a whole lot of time! The souffle is just plain weird and after several days of looking like I had Jello-O in my hair for about an hour every day, I caved and ended up using the Cantu Moisture Retention Styling Gel as my final styling product. The results were curls that last but they are on the crunchy side. I wanted soft touchable curls, but I'll settle for a little crunch over goop. I have't given up on the souffle and think maybe as it gets warmer it will soften more into a custard. In any event thanks so much for reviewing affordable, accessible products honestly and in such a fun way. You are truly an inspiration! Keep it up Mel!

Geo: Omg this is the first video from you that I’ve watched and I’m obsessed with your content already so informative! Recently found out my hair is curly after growing it out in lockdown and I’m a little over whelmed but you make learning so digestible and fun

Janice Billie: The formula for the Shea Moisture souffle gel had definitely changed. It used to be more liquidy/jelly type and now its a hard jello! I took mine back to the store.

jessie stephens: Hey Mell, could you possibly do a video on products that would be great for curlies that have fine wavy/curly hair? I have such a frustrating time trying to find good products that won't weigh down my hair.

Amanda Macaluso: Loved this review! If you’re accepting suggestions for the next drugstore product battle, I would love to see Aussie Miracle Curls vs. Garnier Fructis Curl Nourish.

What Wendy Likes: Thanks a ton for the humidity check! Love the method lol. I'd like to see you try a few natural homemade brands like My Soigne or Ecoslay.

Scarlett: Cantu was good for my hair until they started adding alcohol to their products. It was my miracle worker and my curly haired coworker too. I talked to her about it. She said her hair started to become dry and brittle using it. I stopped using cantu before I finished what products I had because my hair became so dry and tangled I couldn't brush through it.

thisandthatandstuff: Hands down the number one you tuber in my opinion. So funny, smart, and inclusive as possible. Congrats on Sephora squad! Much love from London UK

Willowbyrd: I've used the Souffle before, it's supposed to be the consistency of like a thick... snot. Really love your videos. It's helped me with my own hair a lot. We have really close to the same hair texture.

danielle winkelspecht: The Cantu Curl activator cream is my holy grail. My hair is very similar in texture and type to yours, and the curl activator is just a little too heavy for my hair, but ive found that watering it down just a bit makes it absolutely perfect!

Julie Bruce: I really liked this video! I love how you used, reviewed and did research on these products. I learned al lot even though I have used some of these before. I knew the Shea moisture curl cream would feel producty. I just can’t use it on my fine hair!

Alondra Del Real: Love this! Just moved to a really high humidity climate and didn't know what products would work and this is great to see what I should try

Sharon Thibault: I just found your channel today and have binge watched several of your videos. You have great tips and you are hilarious as well! I love Cantu!

Kassandra Hernandez: Hi Mell! Just stumbled upon your page about a week ago and my life has been changed forever! I can't wait to see how my curls improve over time and I can't thank you enough! My only issue now is my girlfriend has very fine, thin, straight blonde hair (the EXACT opposite of mine) and I don't know what to do with it! Do you have any tips or do you know of any other youtubers we could look into for her hair? I want her to have that 'finally' moment like I did.

Nancy Budd: You are really helping me embrace my crazy curls Mel, I think you are utterly fabulous ♥

yucanative: Love this! My hair isn't nearly as curly as yours. But I started using the Cantu leave in conditioner while going through chemo (I didn't loose my hair but it did thin a bit) and radiation in 2012. I absolutely Love their products. I've dyed and had some bleach in my hair and I don't have ANY split ends since I started using Cantu. I use to be a split end queen lol. I highly recommend Cantu! My Daughter also uses it on her Daughter's hair. They both have super curly hair

Shanna Olsen: Mel, you are so great! You are funny, captivating, entertaining & informative! I'm gonna buy some of these products today & give it a go. Thanks so much for this great video!

Jayna Thomas: i love watching your videos! i have curly hair but it is different from yours (density and texture) but somehow you still make your videos informing enough that I can sort of apply your 'rules' and techniques to how i do my hair. Before watching your videos my hair was kinda a hot mess and now I have clearly defined curls that last (i love shea moisture lmao) and idk I guess I just wanted to say thanks!

Barnes247: I’d love to see you do a review on Melanin. There are 3 products offered, an oil, leave in conditioner and a curl cream. Thank you and awesome video as always!

Zsuzsanna Dani: Ahh, I'm so grateful, thank you! Cantu is the only curl-special brand available in my country, and you can find like 4 different products in a drugstore........ Or you can order from abroad, but everything is soooo expensive because of the shipping. I'm struggling to find any gel compatible with curly hair... But I won't give up, it's definitely worth it :DDDD Still, your videos changed completely how I look at my hair (I used to be bullied at school because of my curly hair, and after years of ironing, I've never owned it as it is,) but now I love it, and want to know everything about it. Never been so thankful for social media before, lol Greetings and love from Hungary <3

Shivangi Parashar: Cantu do it? Yes, Shea can! Typical mell, who doesn't love her Loving the content recently! can't wait for next TEXTURE TUESDAY!!!

Aurora Charming: I'm allergic to something in the Shea moisture products, the itch in my scalp was phenomenal, cantu shampoos are too drying and styling products are too heavy which is a pain because they are both so easily accessible

Alexandra Montenegro: I tried cantu and it left my hair sooooo crunchy. My hair dried and when you would touch my hair product would literally be on your fingers. I love shea moisture and will continue to use their products!

Jana Wilson: I’ve tried SO hard to like the Shea moisture curl smoothie, but it’s just awful in my hair, way too heavy, and the smell is too much. It leaves my hair greasy but dry the next day and it’s the worst. I genuinely don’t understand the hype about it.

Donna Blanton: Mell, I absolutely love watching you and your seester evaluate and teach curly heads different techniques and products. I've learned so much, and love my denim brush and the detangler brush you showed in a different video. I literally laugh out loud, you are both also funny. I do have an unrelated question - I love the green/olive tank and see-through long sleeve coverup you wear in this video. Can you please tell me where you bought it? I have to have it! Thanks in advance, and thanks for all you do for us.

Iscreamintothevoidandthevoidanswerswithhanevan: Cantu made my hair unbelievably dry till it literally started falling out with the smallest touch thank god I’ve finally used it all Up and now can start a diff hair routine

A.J. Sykes: I’ve tried the Cantu shampoo and conditioner in my search of decent priced curly hair care but it felt like it burnt my hair. It made all my curls just flatten out, break off and dry out. It took MONTHS to get my hair back to a semi normal state. If you’re Caucasian and trying Cantu, I recommend testing a piece for 24 hours first. Just to be safe.

Tanializ Rivera: love this kind of videos, thank you for your time and energy on all of your videos!

Amanda Cacioppo: I had the opposite problem with the Shea Moisture gel... The one I bought from target was so watery/oily. It fell to its side in my closet and leaked all the water/oil out! And the gel is textured, like gritty feeling. My only bad experience with SM.

Fernandes: I've just discovered your channel and after years of Yuko straightening my mane, I am all for trying to love my natural curls again. * have ordered aveda products and some cantu and that brush

Leah 4678: I love your videos, Mell. You have taught me SO much. Maybe you could try out Camille Rose products sometime. I have a more coarse and coily/curly texture and low porosity. And I feel so much more confident about my wash days now, thanks to you. Your videos make me laugh and your personality is awesome. Please stay safe during this pandemic so that you can keep making more videos for us to see. Love you and God bless!

Adriana Hurtado: Everytime I watch any of your videos, it only takes me a couple of minutes to think that you are AWESOME. You have helped me achieve better curls, to love my hair, to invest time and what little money I can. I started whatching your videos back in february 2020 while looking for ways to “straighten curly hair” lol. Your personality, recommendations and how you explain everything grabbed my and changed me. I would do buns, pony tail or half-up ALL THE TIME. NOW, I rarely tie my hair up. I do get frizz but still see a lot of definition, this was never the case before.. you are a GREAT INFLUENCER, please keep using this power responsibly, never change unless it is for the better (I don’t think there is anything to change).....I am rambling now LOL. Simply, thank you for this video, you did your homework, now I feel like I can choose better based on your suggestions.. Love you, stay safe.

Karen Alexamae Allada: Hi Mel and Amanda Im a curly Filipina (from Philippines) since I saw your channel, I've been always excited for Tuesday. Your drugstore products are quite expensive if I bought them here, but I really want to try it out soon. Much Love for you both ❤️

Arlene Guizado: All that being said, I would compare the ingredients of both brands. Shea moisture is very environmentally friendly and has no harmful ingredients. Cantu, on the other hand, has many more toxic ingredients. For that, I am willing to forgive a bit of frizz.

Amelie_Nolasco: Me every Tuesday : I don’t feel like doing my hair New video from Mell MUST DO HAIR IMMEDIATELY

Stellar: I love your videos Mell!! Cantu products are too heavy for my hair type and even some Shea Moisture ones too - however I am definitely a fan of the Manuka Honey and Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Treatment too!! It smells AMAZING and always hydrates and brings my curls back to life! I’d love to see a product battle with NYM’s Curl Talk line versus Ouidad. I currently use the Curl Talk defining cream in my routine and I love it!

M K: Hey Mell! Thanks for posting another great video, you're truly am inspiration! So question, what products do you recommend that are more water based and without heavy oils/butters? My hair can get ringlet curls but it stays on the 2A side if I weigh it down too much whereas naturally it looks like 2B/2C....I think? Lol thanks and much love from Chicago!

Frizzandfrillzz: This was a great review lady! I love both of those brands! Cantu is brand new to me though and so far I’m a fan!

Jennifer Flores: Wow I actually use both of these brands ! It was so nice to see this review , because I had speculations that I enjoyed Cantu more.

Amber Abbott-Farr: One of the videos I have been waiting for!!! They did about as well as I thought they would. Good to know they are heavier products (thought that was just me). Cantu held up better with the moisture!!! I've used both, but lately use Cantu! I might use treatments and masks from Shea and style products from Cantu :) Shea did hold up better on Day 4, probably the better hold Thank you as always for the epically awesome video! Looking forward to more product battles! BEST ENDING EVER!!!

Trixie Jay: I had that shea moisture gel and it the consistency was the exact same as yours. It worked amazingly in my hair but the consistency was so difficult to use and little bits of it kept getting all over my washroom so i had to get rid of it. Great video!

Connie Jones: I tried the shea moisture gel, it made my hair oily feeling, it was just a mess. Thanks for another great video.

Anna Russell: Cantu was recommended to me soooo much but when I tried the co-wash and conditioner girl you'd of thought I got sucked into a tornado. My hair was SO TANGLED. I haven't even bothered with any of the other products. But I know people that adore that stuff.

Carolyn Provost: The smoothie smells freaking divine but it ended up being way to heavy for my hair. Haven't tried anything from Cantu yet so I'm definitely intrigued. :) Love your reviews!

Liane B: I think you got a dud in the curl custard, Mel! I have it and mines kinda thick and slimy like flaxseed gel not straight up liquid. Love this side by side! I always feel like shea moisture kills it with shampoo and conditioner, cantu is the go-to () for styling.

Terrasaur: I used to use the Soufflé and it was much more of a more liquid-like product. When it suddenly was a jello consistency, I thought I got a bad batch or something as I live abroad and have to ship Shea Moisture from the U.S. It kept arriving with this new consistency so I just stopped using it all together.

Lucrezia Mazzoli: I begin following all of you tips and I'm here to thank you ❤️ my hair got more definition. Thank you so much

Lineti Feletoa Tua'one: Thank you so much for your drug store product reviews... they've really helped me stay in my budget and still get great results. THANK YOU TO YOU AND YOUR SEESTER :)

Evis S: Cantu coco curling cream was the first curly “cgm” i bought and still have it almost full, it Is really too too too much for my thin hair... I wish I could make it work as you do .

Alaina Marie: Thank you for this! I started using some of the shea moisture products with my sons hair and it makes his curls NOT look like a mini Einstein.

clock 2453: I've tried using Shea Moisture before, but it did not work for my hair. It left my hair extremely dry and my hair would get super tangled and almost to the point of matted in some spots. When I would try to detangle my hair in the shower it would hurt so much that I would cry. However, I had to use it till the product was used up cause that how it works in my house. And now I never want to use anything from that brand ever again. I used one of their shampoos and conditioners, a hair strengthening mask, the detangling milk, the curl smoothie, and the curly hair mask. Also my wash day is every 3 or 4 days. I know that the products may not have been for my hair, but on the bottles it said all hair types. Also I dont want to try a different one only to have the same experience and be stuck using a product that hurts me.

Ray Mohamed: Hi Mel, thanks for this video. My hair is medium to course texture and I have tried the Cantu coconut styling cream and it felt SOOOOOO heavy on my hair (to be fair u used much larger amount of the product than u did), my day 2 hair was soooo greasy (although I have very dry hair) and lacking any definition what so ever ( I don't use gel usually)!! Could the product quantity have anything to do with that? Also, my frontal hairs are heat damaged and pretty much do not curl at all.

Emily Guardado: Used to use Cantu and Shea Moisture when I was transitioning. I didn’t know anything about curl products and these two brands seemed to be everywhere when I was looking up products to buy. But I stopped using them now because they are too heavy for my hair.

Annieswaney: I have both lines Thank you for the review. I have always wanted my hairs to lay down. I’ve been BLASTED on fb by the ‘wavy hair don’t care’ and ‘curly girls. Let’s just say neither are very supportive and shamed me pretty well Anyways...that was a lot of information Thank you for it all!
