Black Women, Hair & Exercise: Part 1

People have all sorts of reasons for not exercising. For African-American women, time-consuming and expensive hairstyles can be another barrier. In this video, we meet Patricia, a pre-diabetic who had to choose between her health and her hair. Music: Joey DeFrancesco, "OGD," from the album "The Champ."

When Linda started doing my hair, I had shoulder-length hair when I thought about exercising. I would always think about my hair every single time I would say: oh, but I'm gon na, have to do my hair and my hair is gon na. Take another two hours and three hours I'll do it tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow never came. I'Ve heard this from a number of my patients. The average african-american woman has some sort of permanent relaxer or maybe even a permanent curl, and whenever she is going to exercise sweat, swim or do anything that involves the getting wet of her hair. It'S always a second there's, always a second thought and there's always a pause and a hesitation, because there's going to be a lot more work involved in getting the hair back to a nice style after the exercise is over. I'M pre-diabetic. I need to exercise. I need to lose weight in order for me to do that. I mean shorter here. Shorter hair doesn't take quite as long for me anyway to take care of african-american hair that we can't just you know we're not watching where it doesn't blow dry and go like that. Differences between african-american hair and, let's say your average Caucasian a person's hair - is the african-american hair is curlier. It comes out of the hair, follicle curling it and it the curl, has to be dealt with in order to have a sort of neat look or be acceptable. In society now, which is something where they have mastery, everybody wears we've cut less thing. Debbie Allen's hair is natural, but she also has what we call good layer. It'S soft, it's not as kinky. This is something that black women have to deal with, because we do need our Fitness. We have to embark upon getting hair styles that aren't so complex. So was my health or my hair. It was a big decision. We found styles to help us maintain our way. Our health, but it was a challenge to get to this point and that's the straight look without the chemicals, so we're going back to the natural hair and not worrying about everything having to be in place. It'S a more funky style when I say funky, it's like you can wash and go if you use the right products finally said: okay, I'm going to cut this hair off because my hair can grow back and then really in the end, if it didn't grow back. I would rock a bald head, but I would be in good health

AkIce Queen: Honestly since I started working out my hair growth has increased. I just throw a hat on and get in the zone when I’m at the gym. I love my hair natural.
