It’s easier, quicker, and cheaper to cut your child’s hair than to bring him to a stylist. So why not just do it yourself?

Warning

Haircutting scissors are sharp, so handle them carefully. And keep them out of your child’s reach!

Step 1: Use haircutting scissors

Use scissors specifically made for haircutting. You may want a few different types for different cutting needs.

Tip

Beveled blades are best for layered cuts because they have one serrated edge. Short blades make it easier to trim around the ears and the back of the neck, and long blades are good for thick hair.

Step 2: Sit him down

Sit your child somewhere that puts his head near your eye level, like on a countertop or a stool. Just make sure he’s in no danger of falling. You can also sit him on the floor on top of a sheet and kneel behind him.

Step 3: Occupy him

Keep him from getting squirmy by putting on a favorite TV show or DVD.

Step 4: Wet his hair

Put a towel around his neck. Then, dampen his hair with a spray bottle, and comb it through.

Step 5: Begin at the neck

Bend his neck forward so he’s bowing his head, and comb the hair above the neck straight down, stopping at the desired length. Flip the comb up toward you, place the hair between your index and middle fingers, and snip the ends in a straight line. Repeat until all the hair above the neck is the same length.

Tip

Keep in mind that curly hair dries up to two inches shorter, so trim accordingly.

Step 6: Chop the top

Next tackle the top. Start at the back and work your way forward, stopping at the bangs. Comb a one-inch-thick section of hair straight up, pulling it tight between your index and middle fingers. Slide your fingers up to the length you want, and snip.

Step 7: Trim the bangs

Move on to the bangs. Have him hold his head straight and close his eyes. Then, comb the hair down over his forehead and trim a one-quarter-inch wide section of hair in the middle of the forehead. Use this as your guide to cut the bangs on either side, holding the hair between your index and middle fingers.

Step 8: Do the sides

For the sides, go from top to bottom and back to front. Taking sections of hair no bigger than an inch wide, comb the hair and pull it tight between your index and middle fingers. Slide your fingers down the hair to the length you want, and snip the hair that’s below your fingers.

Tip

For a more natural look, hold the hair in your fingers vertically, and cut with the scissors held vertically, the tip pointing up.

Step 9: Show him how he looks

Take a step back and look at the big picture to make sure you haven’t missed any spots. Now show him how good his hair looks—and be sure to thank him for being such a good 'client.'

Did You Know?

Blondes have more hair follicles than brunettes, and redheads have the fewest.

TawneyS24: I love that you left it long! Our 2yo has longer hair than my first, and all the videos I saw previous to this were with clippers and guards. We like it longer because of his curls!

Caitlin Hostetter: Totally helped me get layers into my son's hair-- just cut as much off as you want.

Cursewordbekka: Thanks! My boy has special needs and is afraid to cut his hair, so going to a stylist is bot an option. But now he needs a haircut for Christmas. This was very helpful!

003dancer: that little boy is just adorable! great video going to cut my son's hair right now thank you!he can't stand going in for a haircut so hopefully I can do a nice job

Laurel B: Thank you for this video! Your little boy is sooo sooo cute!!

iuyklklk: omg if only it was this easy lol. My two and a half year old has hair down to his shoulders (when wet) and badly badly needs a hair cut. Im gonna go for it...... Wish me luck.

joy garcia: Thank you for this video! That was very informative.

Peanut: I have cut my son's who's three since March 2020 and each time I've got better and better at it. I'd not bother with a salon again. I sit him on his low chair and I sit on the floor. It works well. I use hairdressing scissors and thinning scissors.

MoonlightWhispers ASMR: My little one has the exact hair as that boys , same color length and style but I'm scared to try this I got confused pretty quickly lol ugh

Jane Doe: The steps did become a little intimidating but i think there are some good basics to follow in there

Startme1UP: Boys hair looked great before haircut and THANK GOD his parents cared enough to leave his hair looking good and not hack it off and leave boy with a natural good looking cut that's why

Varelia Rodríguez: He's soooooooooooooooo CUUUUUUUUUUUUTTTTEEE!!!!!! I wanna have a beautiful son like that

TheTheatreQueen: This is great for those who are studying to be cosmetologists without the video distraction

feb feb: And then 10 years later i still dont know how to give my son a haircut

Potsbox: I’m a mother of 20 thank you I made my child sit in the corner for 5 hours so he would learn a little thing about being patient

Marthe Endresen: Bend head forward? haha, good one. No way I could get my boy to have his head in the position I want for a prolonged period of time without physically restraining him (he is 20 months)

p0lkad0tt: the boy is adorable <3

Jenni4Design: I wish my son had that much hair, lol

Hvids: This guy needs a good haircut!

Dean Salvator: That boy was so damn cute :3

Daydream: love that little boy... so cute...!!!

Fashbia: Watching in quarantine for my nephew

TheSLme: What a cutie! Beautiful child.

Rocío Mier: LMAO his smile at the end

endinghunger: Okay I watched this and then cut my babies hair, very helpful, but I messed up the bangs. :( how do I cut it where the bangs lay to one side? his hair is very near the length of the boy in the video here.

Chris: i hate when my hair is long i love it short asf like a 0 length

Bagz Bony: a very helpful tip and a very cute boy! thanx!

Monica E: After watching this, I feel I’ll prepared to cut my child’s hair. SOSalon!

R C: A doubt any boy would want hair like this

cat: and that's how you cut safely

Paigeyy: She didn't cut any hair . The boy looked no different

Jinzo: Now who would do such a thing .. Cut a boys hair in your living room leaving a mess .

Abden Mada: الصنعة فن كما قال أهل زمان والعلم نور شكرا لكم

jay rae: Yeah but how do you cut your kids hair but at the same time NOT make him look like a little fruit

kees mi: Lmaoooo I love this. All these wen who fuck up their kids hair come get them fixed by us professionals.

RaisedUP2: His hair looked better before haircut

Bea fernandez: My son would freak out if i cut his hair my own

Bea fernandez: My son would freak out if i cut his hair my own

Startme1UP: The boy's hair looked even better before the haircut but as boy haircuts go not bad

dudumaroodii: The little boy is so cute

Imer Berisha: Wooow.... The little boy is very very very cute :D

felix: Good haircut, this boy looks good with longer hair. Kids and teenagers have beautiful thick hair. It's pity to shave it short.

Neha Vikas: one more thing you need with kids... that is, PATIENCE. Be ready to stop if kids are fussy. Try next day with same love and PATIENCE

Pug_Princess: she didn't cut any hair.

Neha Vikas: Its not being cheap but being self dependent. My kid sits for 2mins max. He would not let the barber touch his hair. Will cry at top volume. Barbers dont have so much of patience as much as a mom/parents have. I cut my kids hair little bit every weekend. Duration of haircut is till he is not fussy. THere is no barber that can do that at resonable cost... Cutting hair at home is best option...

Mocha: I wanna cut my little brothers hair but my mom doesn’t want me to She doesn’t have faith in me ✌

Sinful Soul: @gigi2924 i always cut my own hair and i actually STYLE it. im 13. now, the people who read this will flip out and start being mean, just a warning, no one gives a shit when you cut your hair at what age :)

akeeper97: simpler plan.... step 1: go to a hair salon step 2: ask for a haircut step 3: pay the bill and leave a nice tip

RNEC: how cute!

ThatGuyTN: Is it just me or does his hair look exactly the same throughout

KitaDyer: I know for a fact I have more hair than the common blond.

Lauryn G: That little kid is soo cute !

Yelena Koudryashova: Cute baby face♥♥

Oinky Land?: Lol he was left the same .. I just give my son a fade is mush easyer then cutting it perfect

MKIVWWI: I liked his hair before it got cut. Poor little tyke!

Gul Afreen: Good one but the tutorial is not in detail. It should be step by step. From where to start , and how to cut . Please try a new one in detail it would be more helpful. Regards

Lorraine Sekera: Why do hair dressers cut with the tips of scissors *into* the hair instead of straight across with the flat part of the scissors? They never explained that.

Yan G.: The kid is so cute!

Operator CH: What happened to shaving? or high and tight? kids reaction at the end. " oh god just shave it please! "

VFX: Nicely edited video. Aaw That boy is such a cutey

A Singh: That kid a adorable

M.P. McDonald: The steps were good, but really, she only cut about a millimeter of hair. Not helpful for getting an idea of how to cut the hair so that it looks good. This little boy is cute, but his hair looked exactly the same before and after.

xilent234: awwwww! He's soooooooo CUTE!!!!

Deborah Meyer: as a mother and a grandmother I think the parent could help prep the child to buy plain Barber at Home in the high chair giving them something then to play with her read or munch that way if you do use a salon they will not be so intimidated

Super Stripes: Well guess what? I hate haircuts I will never cut my hair never.

U-day Benjamin: Super Cute.!

cringe n’ binge: That little boy is cute

Dan2theyella: they are cute like that my lil boy has that hair style i get lots of good comments on his hair

RA A: My son will be 1 on April 11th. All shops are closed due to virus. stay safe everyone

Nick Stc: He's so adorable! :P

DarkneszYTB: awwww so cute :D

REBOREDO, CLARENCE C.: Good one but this is not a how to cut hair tutorial this is a how to trim

mymarcus10: OMFG!!!HES SOO CUTE !!

Beto S.: that's all? the boy still look's the same.

That One: Does it really matter if I just use kitchen scissors??

ticket2: and when the boy gets older let him pay you back for those cheap and quick haircuts that you gave him when he was a little boy and cut your hair mom karma :D

MrOngky100: this baby,in teen he will look handsome than justin bieber

TechnologyStartsHere: My mom cuts my hair in my house, shes a barber. But I never want my hair cut! I wanna grow it out natrally

lox: OMG HE IS SO ADOWABLE! SHNUGGLE SHNUGGLE SHNUGGLE!

Ghosting: @Sugarlandjackson It's where your hair grows out of. It's not that big of a deal.

Jason Todd: @melindamelcher "To long" for a boy? That is a very sexist remark. Saying that boys are "supposed" to have short hair and that they cannot choose what length they can have their OWN hair?????? This video upsets me in many ways. Saying that kids can't pick THEIR OWN HAIR LENGTH! I am a 14 year old gifted male who's hair is below his waist and I LOVE IT. Just like circumcision, HIS body, HIS choice.

TheMay1010: so cute

Robbieplaz: My mom is doing it lol

supercj476: next, "how to cut a black boy's hair"

Kiran Nadir Khan: What kind of a video was it?! She didn't share any tips on actually cutting the hair. It was more of a guide to get your kid ready for a haircut

Fashion world with Sheri: Wao amazing i am your new subscriber
