Today, we're going to be testing out three of the best box dyes that i could find at the drugstore as a professional hairdresser. I don't really have any experience using box dye. Well, like no experience, but this year i have a goal of becoming a master of box dye and doing an entire box dye series to decode, which is the best box dye at the drugstore for you, so that i can help you achieve great hair results at Home, let's do it. The very first thing i did today other than drink coffee was make my way over to shoppers drug mart and take a look at their box dye aisle to see which ones were the most intriguing and looked the best. Now i have to say that this was pretty overwhelming even for me, but i settled on three different box dyes. I settled on schwarzkopf, on garnier olia and on l'oreal and i'll. Tell you why, in a minute, i wanted to test a dark red tone on all three to see which one was better and the reason i chose red is because it can be a bit of a difficult color to achieve a really great results with, even as A pro the first thing i'm going to be marking it on is box, and that's because cosmetic companies love to they are just known for massive amounts of bullshitting number two is going to be based on coverage. How well does it cover number three is gon na? Be on ease of use, how easy is it to mix and how easy is it to apply, and then number four is gon na be on vibrancy, because red is hard to get vibrant and i'm gon na be making the ranking system really easy to understand. It'S gon na be ranked from one to three: one is crappy, two is all right and three is above my expectations and i'm also gon na be doing a test watch using professional hair color and that color is gold. Well, that's the color that i use in my studio, because, if you're not comparing box dye to salon dye, then what is even the point of this experiment. We want to see if box dye really. Is that much worse or doesn't look as nice compared to salon quality dye? So let's talk about the three choices that i picked. Garnier olia is interesting because it's a no ammonia oil powered color. What does that even mean by oil powered color like? Is that actually true or is that just like a whole bunch of and if it is true, does the oil do anything good for the hair or is it just a marketing scheme? Because does the flower oil make the hair healthier? Does it not impede on whether or not the color is going to absorb properly into the cortex? Is it going to create any type of chemical reaction that isn't optimal for vibrancy and coverage and shine when it comes to hair color? So i want to give you guys a little bit of a lesson on ammonia. Ammonia is really misunderstood in the general population and even in the hairdressing community, and it's it's kind of annoying. For me, i'm not gon na lie. Coloring, your hair is a chemical reaction, that's just the reality of it, and it has a lot to do with the ph balance of the hair and how color gets absorbed into the cortex. So i'm not going to go too much into it, because i want to bore you guys too much, but when you are coloring hair, you need an agent that swells the cuticle layer, which is the outermost layer of the hair that looks like shingles on a roof. We need to open it up so that the color molecules can then go into the cortex of the hair. Now, typically the agent that does this is called ammonia. Ammonia is a gas, so it has a strong smell. So ammonia really does do a very good job of creating vibrant and long lasting color and since ammonia molecules are small, they are easily rinsed away from the hair in the hair washing stage, and you end up with a really great vibrant, long-lasting color result. So the fact that we've, you know, plagued ammonia as super evil is silly because it's not evil. It'S just the agent that works towards swelling the cuticle, so the color molecules can then go into the cortex and you can have nice colored hair that doesn't immediately wash out the reason that ammonia can be a little bit problematic, and i think the reason why the Community has created this negative connotation with it is that, if it's used improperly, it is going to inevitably inevitably inevitably lead to damage in the hair, but that is like anything if you bleach your hair too much it's going to damage your hair. If you color your hair every two weeks, you're going to get a ton of damage, you're going to get a ton of breakage and that really isn't because ammonia is like evil. It'S just because it's a chemical reaction in the hair, that's lifting the cuticle and you're going to create damage. If you do that too often, or if you do it improperly so without the process of swelling the cuticle chemical hair, coloring cannot happen, it will not happen. It cannot happen so i read a really great article and i'm gon na leave it in the description box below that was talking about ammonia and the misconceptions of ammonia. When you take away a key ingredient in something you have to replace it with something else. In order for it to work so the way that this article described it was making sugar-free cake. We all want things without sugar, because sugar is evil now, apparently in society. So what do we do? We take away sugar, but if you don't have sugar in cake, the cake tastes like crap, because cake is sweet, so we replace it with a sweetener. Now is sweetener better for you, i mean i'm not a nutritionist, so i don't even know, but that that's what's happening in hair coloring. Is the agent they're replacing ammonia with better than ammonia, and this is questionable because, regardless the cuticle layer has to be opened in order for that color molecule to go into the cortex, so we take ammonia away, we're going to put something else that works and acts Like ammonia, so that the chemical process of hair coloring can actually work and take effect, so ammonia products can definitely be damaged if used incorrectly, but they can be beautiful if used correctly, and we are replacing ammonia with something else which could potentially also be damaging, or Maybe even more damaging, so my fear with this, and the reason that i really wanted to test. It is because i want to see if it's going to be as vibrant as the other options that have ammonia and if it will be as long-lasting i'd, be worried that maybe this wouldn't last as long and fade much faster, because it doesn't have that key ingredient. That you know really gives effective hair coloring. I am clearly very passionate about ammonia. I didn't know about my passion until i started talking to you about it. So in terms of box, i give garnier olia a one, because i think this is trying to get people to buy it based on fear of something that they don't understand. Let'S talk about box number two box. Number two is a short scoff and the reason that i picked this is because schwarzkopf is actually a professional color line, so they made a drugstore brand as well, which is pretty cool, and i actually really like schwarzkopf. I like a lot of their styling products as well, so i thought this is pretty good. This is pretty cool. It says up to 10 weeks of color intensity. I like that, they say this, because this is just like professional hair color after 10 weeks, regardless of what color you dye your hair and whether that's in a salon or not, your hair color is going to fade, wear and tear sun shampooing conditioning swimming living life Is going to make your hair color fade in 10 weeks, so this isn't bullshitting you to say that it's going to last longer! That'S what it's going to last! It'S going to last like that, regardless of the color that you use. Another thing that i absolutely love about this packaging is that it tells you the color levels right on here so color level. One is the black is black and it goes all the way up to color level 10, which is the lightest blonde. The packaging is trying to educate the consumer that this is what color levels look like, so that you can match your hair to it. I like that this box is educating the clients or the consumers very well done, so i give box a three out of three above average better than i would expect well done. Schwarzkopf and the third box that i bought was l'oreal. Now the whole thing about this box is that it's claiming to be multi-tonal, one of the biggest critiques that i have about box dye is that box dye often is very flat and very opaque and there's a number of reasons for this, and i talked a lot About it in my other box, dye video. So if you guys like this video, you can go check out that one next, because you'll learn a lot about the fundamentals of box dye in that video. But this one's claiming to cure that problem. To basically give you a highlighted, multi-tonal effect, which is very interesting. I also like how on the box, it says that it is not recommended for heavily highlighted or predominantly gray hair, so this is basically telling you that it's not going to work well with gray coverage, and i think the reason for that is because it is red There isn't a lot of natural pigment in it for you to cover gray, you need an n pigment or a natural pigment in order to really get that opaque coverage, so this isn't formulated for gray coverage. That'S very important to know, and i like that, it's clear on the box, so when you guys are choosing box dye, make sure you read the entire box so that you know whether it's a good option for you or not. This is not a good option for someone covering gray, but we're not covering grade today. So it's fine, so in terms of box, i will give this a two out of three. I think that it's not bullshitty. I think it's pretty good, it's quite clear. It does a good job of explaining what it's doing it's talking about the multi-tonal effect we'll see, if that's actually true, but i don't think it's as good as schwarzkopf, because schwarzkopf gives you that level chart, which i think is so so so important to know. If you are starting to explore the world of coloring your own hair, let's put these to the test, shall we so so? This is how the olea color turned out, i'm pretty shocked, to say the least. It is quite multi-tonal. It'S pretty reflective. It'S got a nice deep quality to it, almost like a burgundy, which is exactly what i would expect of a level four red. So let's compare this to our control swatch, which is goldwell, so you can see that goldwell, the gold wall red, is a little bit more on the brownie side. This tone here this one has a little bit more of like a purple hue to it. The goldwell one looks more natural. This one looks more like a fashion color, but in terms of its reflective qualities, i feel like they both look stunning like absolutely stunning. The schwarzkopf color is the most different. It'S the one that i was expecting to look the least like this. It is a lot more vibrant, so it looks like a much lighter red than the other colors. The other ones are definitely a true level. Four, this in goldwell is more like a level six like it is a vibrant, lighter red. It doesn't have that cool tone of the violet or the purple that the other tones have. This again is absolutely beautiful, looks fantastic if we compare it to our gold. Well, color: you can see that there is a huge difference in the level. Goldwell is much darker and has more of a violet undertone. This is more of a true red, so, if you're looking for a really true red tone, this one is great. That looks really really nice and then finally, we have l'oreal. So this is our l'oreal swatch again it's great. It has more of that purpley undertone as well. This claimed on the box to be multi-tonal, and i would say that it is. It is quite multi-tonal. It'S not a flat color at all. There'S lots of tones through it there's almost like a blackish tone that goes through it and then there's a red tone that goes through it and a little bit of violet really really nice. This looks a lot like the olea color, so if you put them together, you can tell that they are almost identical, there's very, very, very little difference between them other than the fact that olea, maybe is a tinge more violet, but very little like if this was On the same person's head of hair, you wouldn't know which one was which again, if we compare that to goldwell, you can see that goldwell is more of a natural red. You can see a lot more of those brown undertones shining through it, whereas l'oreal is more vibrant, which is shocking, really really shocking. I just didn't expect that i didn't expect those results at all. I would say that the one that i, like the least, is goldwell. So i've never really been a big fan of the goldwell reds. I'Ve done them a billion times over the last. You know eight years and i do find that they don't have a lot of vibrancy and typically, when someone's wanting to go red, they want to go red and gold. Well, for whatever reason, the reds always seem to look really natural if you're a stylist, and you have an opinion about this - leave it in the comment section below, but all of the time, all of the times that i have done a goldwell red. Unless i add a lot of booster, it just goes pretty natural, it's like a brownie red and that's exactly what i got on my extension swatch as you can see, especially when you're, comparing it to the other colors. So, let's go through our ranking system and let's get them all ranked up so for ease of use. Garnier olia was totally fine. It was really good. I found the applicator bottle good, so three for three and i would also give l'oreal and schwarzkopf three for three. They all did a fan, fantastic job. As for coverage, again, i would say all three of the box dies did an amazing job. They all had opaque coverage next to none of the brown was shining through so three for three for garnier, for schwarzkopf and for l'oreal. Now my favorite is vibrancy, because if you are going red, vibrancy is the key, so garnier olia, i would say the vibrancy - is a two out of three. It'S good. It'S not like out of this world vibrant. I would say that schwarzkopf is a three out of three now. Schwarzkopf is bright and vibrant and red um. If you are going for a red red red, the schwarzkopf one is the reddest of all of them. The other ones have more of a violet undertone because you're in the level four, so it's a little bit deeper, but having dyed all three using the same swatch of hair in the same level and the same color schwarzkopf for sure is the most vibrant red of All of the colors overall i'm shook. I'M surprised, i'm really surprised that these are as good as they are that they worked as well as they did that they covered as well as they did and that they are as vibrant as they are now. The biggest problem with box dye, for you guys to remember, is that it's not so much the formulation, that's the problem, it's that it can't think, and there are a lot of factors when it comes to dyeing your hair. That'S not just about formulation! All in all box dye has come a long way since i've used it in high school, so i'm pretty impressed and i'm excited to go more and more into the box color world and see what else i can discover for you guys. If you have any questions. Don'T forget to leave them in the comment section below and i'll see you next week, bye

Sharon V: Loved this video!! I think it’s important for those that can’t afford to get colour done at a professional salon to have really good information!! Great job

Beemergrl: I use L’Oréal box dye and have had hairdressers ask me who colors my hair. I’ve even had two ask if it was my natural color. Go figure! Thanks for the testing!

missjoasia123: Every time a hair dresser uses box dye they’re shocked. Well, it’s all of what some people use. I don’t have money to be going to a salon and actually nor do I want to. I love doing my own hair. Thank you for being Honest ! And rating the box dyes fair. I’d say I’d love to use any of the box dyes. They all did great. I’ve used Garnier before in medium brown and love it.

JimBearOne: Box Color is NOT terrible but you need to have the RIGHT expectations. 1) If your hair is not already dyed and you stay within 2 Levels of your natural color you can get Good Results. 2) If your hair has been chemically processed ( Color, Bleach, Perm, Relaxed ) you need to do a STRAND TEST before proceeding. AMMONIA - FREE Color uses ETHANOLAMINE instead which is less odor. OIL BASED Color uses an Oil Base to better preserve the hair’s natural Lipid Layer so it is better conditioned and because the Dye Stuffs used dissolve in OIL better than water you can get a better color result with LESS FADING from exposure to water. FÉRIA is a TRANSPARENT, Permanent Color that uses a PURE DYE that works WITH the existing shade - Example: a BLUE BLACK shade would use a Transparent “No Base” color of Deep Blue to Add a Blue Tone to Dark Brown or Black hair, if used on a lighter shade the result would be very Bluish or Greenish

Silken: thank you for the honest review! I think box dye has come a long way. I have used it in the past and sometimes had even better results than in a salon. That said...I now prefer professional color because I want to be able to chose and mix it individually for my hair. I use ammonia-free toner with 10 vol. developer because that's more than enough to cover-up my greys (I have very fine hair) with the least amount of damage. Also, imo box dye looks great after first use- but over time, even if you only touch-up your roots and just refresh the length for a few minutes...it will damage and dry out the hair. The developer is too strong to constantly overlap the already colored length.

Tori Tori: U should add another category for DAMAGE. I wanna know how much damage the box dyes do too

Tquirkyt: This is great! I’ve been coloring and highlighting my own hair for 40 years. I can afford to pay a stylist, I just hate roots, like the control, and hate the cost of a colorist…for me. I’ve gone through periods of using a colorist, but always go back to doing my own. I don’t understand why most people choose not to read instructions, then complain it was awful for their hair. I love that you placed so much stock in reading the manufacturer’s directions..so important. Thanks for the great tips!

Tamara lozada: I wish this video was out a few months ago when I spent almost $300 total with a stylist in 2 attempts to get my hair red from medium brown. She lifted the color for the red to take. Each time the red washed out on the 1st wash. I went back after I told her it washed out and spent more $ to try again. After my failed attempts my daughter dyed her own hair with a red box dye and it looked AMAZING. I don't mind spending $ for great results but I felt like a sucker after literally throwing $ down the drain. This was an amazing video. Maybe I'll give it another shot on my own. Thank you!!!

Denise S: Hi Gabi, great tips and advice. I've been dying my hair for years and have never gone to a hair salon to do it. 1, because they're expensive, 2, they take too long so they can justify the price, and 3, I can do it myself at home! If I colour my hair today, it'll last for at least 3 months and when my greys are starting to show I'll wear a headwrap and give my hair a rest for about another 2-3 months. My hair is in great condition. I've got a friend who swears by getting her hair 'professionally' done at the salon and what's funny is, her colour comes out the same way as mine....no difference! She's paying a lot for them to sit her in a salon chair, offer her a drink, and then colour and wash then style . Box dyes for me are brilliant. I've made the odd mistake now and then over the years where I've gone for a lighter shade thinking it'll cover the grey but it's done nothing. Now I've realised I need to use a darker colour (dark brown) so everything is covered. But box dyes for me are the way to go! Thanks for sharing ❤

missjoasia123: I just want to say there is a whole world of box dye you can buy online as well not just at the drugstore and some of those are just BOMB. I am a person who has used the “Real” hair dresser dye from Sally Beauty because of Brad Mondo always preaching about actually doing hair “properly “ and honestly it doesn’t compare to Box dye. Box dye cones of so much more shiny, dimensional color and lasts! I am back on box dye after using Demi hair dye from Sally Beauty per Brads advice. Nope , I’m glad you’re testing out the box dye world.

Anabelle: Gurl that was so informative and interesting! I love to see a hairstylist give another perspective on at home coloring. Love it! Just subscribed

blueice: Thank you so much for being so educational, helpful, informative - and sympathetic to all of us who, for whatever reason, can not use professional hairdresser services. That's so kind of you - much appreciated! You're lovely. Beautiful inside out, kind and caring human being. <3 Regarding box dyes, they've come long way and are more than OK now. It's all about finding the brand that suits your hair the best regarding ingredients and aggressiveness, also regarding shades that are achieved as a final result. For me, personally, Garnier is least invasive and most gentle to both my skin and my hair. L'Oreal will provide great color, but it's more damaging for my very thin, fine, dry, naturally curly/wavy hair which is almost fully gray now. I'm going for natural/ashy light blond. Schwartzkopf's colors are a bit too vibrant for me, I prefer natural looking shades. Stay safe and lovely! XOXO

Alicia Guy: I loved this video, your honesty, and your knowledge! You were also really great at explaining and educating us as you went along. If you don't teach yet... you should really look into it. I for one could listen and learn from you.

Mr. Emerald The Green: This was such a great video!! Thank you for doing this! So if you need an idea for a video, I would really really really really love another video like this but with you using box dyes in blonde! The reds are amazing but going blonde from say a brown or very dark blonde is a whole different cup of tea. And it will help me when I finally get well, (or at least not as Unwell) and want to eventually go a light sunny GOLDEN blonde. Just discovered your channel and am loving it!

Jackie Morrison: I would love to see you use box dye to tackle grey roots as I've discovered the box dye does "take" differently on the grey roots (ie what is needed to treat the grey/white roots in order for it to match the rest of the hair). I have natural medium blonde hair with highlights and no matter what level of box dye blonde, my white/grey roots always come in like a dark root smudge...thankfully that is kinda fashionable at the moment lol.

Julie Cordova: I’ve let my natural hair color grow out but I colored my hair copper red for years with L’Oréal and used to get many compliments. It’s a pain though, it fades fast and needs to be dyed often.

Esmeralda Larios: Thank you for testing these store box dyes. I'm getting ready to dye my hair for the first time as I have some gray right at my hairline only about 10% of my hair. I'd like to stay close to my natural color which is medium to medium dark brown. I would love you to see you do the same test with natural brown shades.

Tracey B: You cracked me up several times, thank you. I loved your brutal honesty and “no bullshit” approach it was funny and refreshing…as well as informative

Yuuneko: Gabi I agree with you that not all professional hair colour brands have vibrand reds.Lativel is a brand that my hair dresser uses and the colours are really natural, all of the reds and L'Oreal Majirel, they have 0 reds like woah, but they have TONS of blonde tones which I love.I live in Greece and box dyes are 1/3 of the price of what you got them, but then again,i order my hair dyes online, they cost the same as the box hair dyes tbh.Box hair dyes contain max 155ml of total product (with the developer) and they can cost up to 15 bucks and the better option here is to get individual tubes of professional hair colour, they cost 6-8 bucks the 100ml and the developer for 1 use costs a few cents. If people have a cosmetic store near them that sells hair dyes, they could do some eye shopping and compare prices.Right now though,I bleach my hair using the wella bleach and i dye my hair purple with the brand directions.Anyway, great video, keep it up,you just got a new subscriber ♥

Melissa Moore: I’ve used Garnier Olia several times. Each time I was disappointed. Love the smell since you don’t get the harsh chemical smell. It does leave your hair soft. BUT the color longevity is crap.

nina: I'm no hairstylist but my mom is .. so I live in Germany and I can say Box Dye can be good as well! So yes go for IT! ✌ L'Oréal , Schwarzkopf and Garnier are Brands that work so good. The Thing is to bleach hair wirh Box Dye Bleach this is really complicated.

Rain: Just an FYI:There are pro color that have a different analine derivative fron ammonia, that use an oil delivery system, which pushes molecules into the cortex, vs. Lifting the cuticle, and it's incredibly fortifying, as it delivers proteins , as well and covers even resistant grays. Redken Chromatics. They also make a 10NN.

Kelly Vaccaro: I have been using olia for the past 10 years .....I absolutely love it....2 months ago I tried madison reed...not impressed...just dyed my hair 3 days ago and with olia and it looks so healthy...shiny, smooth....I have very long dry hair so olia is perfect for me

Jamie James: I finally found the NO B.S. (general) hair expert to go with my no B.S. CURLY hair expert (Mell, of Manes By Mell)! I love this video so much and I adore how STRAIGHTFORWARD you are!!! Thank you for being this way!!! You’re awesome.

Pinksessh: I would have liked to see the hair strands in different lighting

JimBearOne: The Original Haircolor formula(s) were based on OIL (usually, Tall Oil Acid or Oleic Acid) Miss Clairol Creme Formula, Miss Roux, Rayette and all of the Liquid Professional Color used OIL as the BASE and Carrier of the dyes. This is why you had to shampoo the hair after rinsing the color to remove excess oil from the product even the “Shampoo-In” type colors needed to be shampooed because they were Oil Shampoo Tints meaning the product used a sulfonated oil as the base which allowed the shampoo-in application. More modern colors use Dyes that are more water soluble to skip the shampoo step and allow a Creme or Treatment type conditioner to be used right after but these are not as water resistant as the old Oil Based colors they are just easier to rinse out.

Melissa A: My hair is down to my waist, so when I get it colored to cover my gray hairs and cut, it's well over $200. That's just not in my budget. How many boxes should I use? It used to be really thick, but age and stress have made my hair pretty thin.

Fabi Williams: I'd like to see your view on best dyes for grey hair. I find the majority don't take well & the grey comes through

KJW 1066: I’ve always preferred box dye to professional. Much more vibrant, and lasts longer in my experience

K S: Great piece! I fall into the category, Dark hair covering grey roots very 2-3 weeks, my hair grows VERY fast is virgin hair and in great shape, and long. I only color the roots and mayb every few jobs drag it through the rest, but this color seems to hang in there long term. I like a Brown/Black color and found this exact color with a box color. It is soft and has some dimension to it. In the sunlight you can tell it is not black but it is not dk Brown. Because of my resistant grey it works well. I have looked at other vendors, however they only have the option of Black (various tones) or Brown (various tones). I have only found this Brown/black with one vendor. And they are on the less expensive end. Quality? No ammonia. How can I get this sort of combo color with others who do not do a Brown/black version? Or is it even doable? Thank you! Subscribed!

Erica Dubach: This was a great video on the formulation! I wonder if there's a marked difference with manic panic, lunar tides, lime crime etc formulas compared to box dyes and salon formulations, as I've fucked around with salons and box jobs over the years and the outcome for all of them have been varied.

JuIL O: I had to laugh...my husband just colored my hair this afternoon. I've used the Schwartzgraph (5.29 Vintage Red) for years now. Hands down, the BEST lasting red I've ever used. Color lasts perfectly 6+ weeks which is amazing for fade prone reds. I get tons of compliments on the color. My only gripe is the fact that Walmart seems to have pulled the brand (or at least my color) and I have to mail order from Rite Aid. Love, love, love it.

Bianca Streaton: Hi Gabi, thank you for your amazing video! Due to covid circumstances I can not afford going to the salon every 4 weeks. I have naturally dark blonde hair (which turned and awful mousy brown after pregnancy) and neutral pale skin, I really want a dark natural brown hair colour, which box dye would you suggest is best for continous us, just want a natural looking dark brown colour. Thank you

Lucia Tat: I don’t even want to remember my first experience with box dye, at home!! it was horrible! I started having my hair dyed at a salon for many years then, one day I wanted to try doing it myself! I was horrified, couldn’t believe how much that dye dried my hair, and it said to have oils in it, and be very gentle to the hair. Also, the color was so far away from what I expected it to be, instead of a dark golden blonde I got red hair :)) I promised myself, never again! If I can afford going to a salon, that’s the only decent option out there, otherwise there’s no hair dyeing for me.

Kimberly Sue Iverson - Author: I like people like you who can go in with an open mind. I appreciate videos like this that include clear information too. I find for me even in brands they can vary. Like with me I find if I wanna pull red, go Garnier. I forget the specific one I used, Naturals? It always pulls more vibrancy (brighter red) from my natural red. Whereas if I wanna pull more chocolate/natural tone-ish, I grab for L'oreal Preference. Over time even inside each brand one learns how each can vary, lol. My go to has always been L'oreal Preference. Leaves my hair in better shape, and the colors give me a better result.

Kim Cherry: Sometimes it's hard to go to a professional, if someone has issues with pulling or thinning hair. Thank for posting this!

Fizzy Belrose: This video was in my recommendations so I decided to check it out. Your personality is so upbeat and nice. I learned a lot and I totally just subscribed to you. I can't wait to watch more of your videos

josh parker: This contents so great! I want another color series!

brightphoebus: Hooray! Fun review. I always wanted to try Schwartzkopf. I was a regular user of Revlon Colorsilk. It lasted great, looked natural, and didn't dye too dark, and didn't damage my hair. I have dry, sensitive eyes also so the ammonia free, in my little bathroom, my eyes thanked me. I used to do my roots every 2 weeks cuz they were obvious tho, and my scalp became sensitive to the MEA. I had to stop coloring : (

Carol Bierman: I buy my own developer & color from Sally's Beauty. I find that it's less harsh on my hair. And really no more costly than the box dies. I have thin hair that tends to go brassy especially if I color it too often or use a strong developer. I now use a low 10 developer for sensitive scalp and I mix it one part to one part with a demi color and gloss. It's took over a year of trying different color mixtures to get it to that perfect color. Also by adding the gloss it makes my hair shinier and a more translucent, which blends nicely with grow out gray. And no more brassiness.

Adia Rain: I actually love the Goldwell red. I'm a huge fan of more natural red. :)

Donna Thornburg: Great review! Thank you for your advice. Haven't made up my mind about coloring yet.

flying bird: Hey hey i have a question concerning color refresh conditioners: You mentioned in the video, that coloring your hair every 2 weeks will damage it. So what about color refresh conditioner ? Can that potentionally have a similar effect on your hair when used with every wash? Or what does one need to look out for so that this wont happen ?

Prettier than everything: Such a cool video idea we would love to see more ❤️

addii: Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I just purchased a red box dye (one of the brands you selected) and im trying to get all the information about it.

PaigetheMoonChild: Before the hair colour I have now I have previous hair dye and had to bleach it out. When I wanted to redye it I wanted a good colour but it to be affordable for me. I ended up getting the Schwarzkopf at the dollar store for $4 a box which for me I needed 2 so $8 for 2 boxes instead of like $9 for one at my Walmart in Canada. I got the colour chocolate copper (I don't remember the code for it) and it's EXACTLY the colour I was looking for. Its a nice natural looking copper that isn't too orange and kind of like the perfect "pumpkin spice" colour which is what I was looking for. Even though my hair didn't bleach completely even since there were different tones and colour in my hair before it still covered it pretty much completely even which I was surprised about. It's been a month and a week ish since I dyed it and it's still so nice and vibrant and I find it didn't damage my hair at all. Obviously I have roots showing now and I recently got a new box for the touch up and I'm just surprised by how nice the colour was but when I seen the video I wasn't surprised that Schwarzkopf overall won. They just seem like an amazing brand. Sorry this was so long just wanted to share my input of someone that used a different shade in their line.

Ren: Great video! I would LOVE a video just like this one but with black/blue black colour. I think us looking for a perfect black always get like underestimated. Again, awesome video!

Susan Hafferkamp: I use instant coffee, coconut oil, and yogurt a few times a week. While it's not anything boxed, and not long lasting, There's no freaking chemicals at all. My hair is naturally reddish, and that's exactly what it does, and I can mix it up in my own kitchen.

Stef V.O.: Garnier olia is always patchy with me, the color doesn't stay as long, I love syoss oleo as a box dye, both Garnier and syoss are non ammonia.

Brandon Schalitz: We switched to goldwell in the salon and I freaking hate it so far! The entire line completely washes out or just does r work

Real Angie: Really great video! I'd love to see more of these! Subbing (of course)!

Ms7of8: I was using Garnier Olia Light Auburn for a few years and it was, for me, the best boxed hair color I've used. However, stores stopped selling the color. I went to Amazon to order a few boxes, but they turned my hair clown orange ! Obviously, the seller was sketchy and had old product or it was substituted with something else. I used Schwarzkopf a couple of times, in the Caramel Blonde (even though I'm a red gal), and thought the results were very good. However, Schwarzkopf only has the burgundy type reds and I want the other color red, e.g., light to medium auburn, without the purple or burgundy hues. Wish they offered it my color. Your videos are super -- thank you !

Kim Foster: As a stylist u should know that mysterious peroxide levels is the biggest issue with box color. If your using a peroxide to strong for your hair it's damaging and can cause the color to go in your hair fast but out just as quick, specially with reds as it's such a tiny color molecule. Also the ammonia levels.

Sarah Feliu: This was so informative, thank you!

Lenka: Please do this with blond box dyes. (I have level 6-7 natural hair and I wonder if there is any good box dye that won't make me orange or yellow...)

wiknoir: I use garnier olia to dye my hair, smells good, doesn't burn and gives me a nice bright result

Argos Weiss: I think that as a professional hairdresser, using professional colors, I can always ad more pigment to the colors, in a form of color corrector, so I can mix the perfect shade for the client

vrose: Would love for you to do a video on the best drug store bleach like ones we can buy at Sally’s

PS Mauney: You had me at Box BullSh*t! **LOL** Appreciate your candidness. Your videos are very informative!

T T: I used the Olia one for yeaaars on my naturally black hair. It was the best red which lifted the most.

Adriana Tomic: I used to use.. blue-black box dye...for 17 years, but black uses low volume 20volume max. For red...I only use profesional..because I do not need high volume, 20volume max(for my natural) and most reds have 30 ...some even more. Lots of people that uses box red for a long time, their hair is fried. I use my red or more than an 1 year, hear is shiny and soft..but I mix my own color with developer 10-20volume. I do not mind ammonia colors, have greys...and those cover my greys.

Maxine 96: I would always use professional color, so I can choose the developer. Most of the time, there is a 30 vol in box dyes and bleaching kits. I rather buy bleach powder and 10 vol or a permanent color and 20 vol, if I don't need the extra lift, so I don't damage my hair more than necessary.

This Girl: Great point about what is ammonia being replaced with? I always question those 'free of...' claims.

Hexsing: I like how honest you were.

Squidward 915: Such a helpful video! I picked up the Schwarzkopf and I’m so excited ☺️

sharon paterson: So glad I just found your channel tonight I used to use a hair colour which is called LIVE I used it for years and it was fine then one day I used it and it was so bad my head was burning and literally smoking / steaming it was so bad I was literally crying so I left my hair for around 9 months then tried OLIA wow that hair colour is gorgeous smells Devine makes my extremely fine hair really shines and looks lovely I have terrible issues with my hair constantly falling out and I’m talking a lot and I find olia doesn’t make it worse unlike live did I saw your video just now on blunt cut bobs and I’m now going to try this cut I’ve gone short before and regretted it at first but i loved it after a while I’ve not had my hair cut now since march 2020 when the pandemic hit us here in the uk so I’m so excited to try this new style I’ll update you when I can get an appointment thank you for posting your videos love them xx

Natalie Harkins: Hi, is olaplex shampoo and conditioner the best to go with when coloured hair? Also is majicontrast the same as box dyes as in the damage to hair A reply would be really appreciated TY

Wendy T: I have an allergy to ammonia, so can't use permanent color (MAkes my hair fall out!) I use Olia occasionally and it is very easy to use. My hair has to be super clean or it ends up very greasy. It lasts about 3 weeks. I'm 56 and am approx 80 % gray. Olia covers it which Clairol Natural Instincts Ammonia free formula does not. I think it's all around a decent non Ammonia color. My hair is naturally medium to dark brown, but I use light brown because my hair tends to draw in the darkness. Medium brown looks dark brown on me and dark brown looks black.

Kathie Harrop: Hi there. I’d love to know what to use to embrace my medium blonde hair that is gradually going grey. I don’t necessarily want to cover the grey, rather, I’d like to embrace it and blend my medium blonde to more grey or ash. So I’m reverse. I want to blend my length into my roots, rather than the other way around.

Jason Dozier: I like this education she an awesome knowledgeable person I want to listen more what she can bring to the table and also talk about shades of light blonde and platinum blonde

Olga D. Athanasiadou: My natural hair colour is dark brown, I've used a semi-permanent box dye to dye it black though. If I want to go from black to dark red, is there any box dye colour/brand you suggest me to use ? Something that won't make me look like Eastern European,please... Thank you in advance! Great video!

Raven Simonyi: I love olia because it doesn’t damage my hair at all, and it’s ammonia free

deadgirl82: I have used Olia 112 for YEARS, it's what's on my hair in my profile picture... Now wait for this - my natural hair colour?? Auburn. A reddish brown. I do not prelighten, I do not bleach. I ONLY use Olia 112, and that's the results I get. I have sworn by that particular colour for years, as its the only brand to get me to blonde without any damage. My hair is also in amazing condition, as this product does virtually no damage, and leaves my hair really soft and shiny. I sound like a rep for them lmfao, but I'm not-I've no links to them whatsoever. It would actually break my heart if they ever stopped making this, because I refuse to use any type of bleach or lightener on my hair, as I do not want to compromise its health. It would be great if they made a profession line, but none the less, I'd still do my own hair at home, and save my cash. I do have training as a hairdresser, from when I left school, so am pretty confident in home colouring, and honestly the first time I tried this, I didn't think it was going to work, but I was shocked by the results!! You should def try out their blondes-they will not disappoint <3

Laura Vitt: I need this video! Wonderful! Please talk about highlighting at home, thank you

C K: THANK YOU !! I don't know what it is about my hair but it NEVER turns out the colors I want..This was the reason I stopped going to hair salons I figured "If it's not gonna look like the color I was hoping why am I spending 40€ when I can spent 5€ and do it myself" I tried the koleston tube type dye "professional hair products" and my hair did not take to it at all !! IMA try box dyes.. but I know what to expectTake Care All

Michelle Nunley: Can you compare those that claim to be best for gray?

smileandsaycheese44: I colour my grey roots black every 3 weeks. Never any damage. Maybe you are doing something wrong.

April Tyner: What is the best box color for gray coverage with blonde color?

Glam Girl Gabi: If you want to hear what my opinions are about box color in general and learn some fundamental facts about home hair coloring, check out this video next: Real Hairdresser Spills THE TRUTH about BOX COLOR https://youtu.be/4QaQ0IT90vA **Check out my merch shop! F C: True reds and purple are really tricky colours and often disappointing. Reds are usually more like brown and purple is more like red or black with a purple sheen.

Elle : IGK just came out with a box dye, I am intrigued!

Laura Vitt: Just found you…yessss! Could you talk about highlighting at home please. God bless you

Maria Riggs: Have you tried the joico powerhouse reds line? Thinking of picking that up at cosmoprof

ivette santana: ultime is the best to me although olia is the best experience, it will not turn grays into anything and ferias fry the hair but thats my opinion lol

Danae Dunning: I have to use ammonia free because I have a reaction to the smell and it burns my scalp. I use either Herbatint or Naturtint.

Oonagh72: Can you review Clairol Natural instincts. It is the one I use and love. I’m just curious to hear a profession’s thoughts. Also L’Oréal owns Garnier. That is probably why the look so much alike.

buddy holly: Based on those price labels at the store, I'm gonna guess you're in Canada I just found you and I'm digging your videos. Wondering what you think of the Sally beauty supply colors?

2shadowcats2: Feria Ultralight blonde series are very, very good!! My mom had level 3 brown hair. It would lighten her to almost platinum!!

Readings by CARA: ❣ You are absolutely a *babe.* Love your videos, Gabi. *Newly subscribed.* ♥️

Tereasa Rudisill: I would love to see you do a box dye on blonde

LeAnna: Could you do black box dyes ?

Melissa Ramirez: Thank you for this video!! I’ve used L’Oréal box dye before & my whole scalp started burning badly. I had to rinse it right out! Ever since then, I haven’t used L’Oréal. Has this happened to anyone else?

Kathryn Moore: I wonder what the colours are like after washing the hair etc

Iqra A: My hair is naturally black and I have dyed it with the garnier olia vivid garnet but it didn’t show through on my ends properly because my hair is thick and I only used one box. Do you think if I use two boxes of the deep garnet the colour will show through?

deadgirl82: Also, I'm a new sub, and I know it's a LOT to ask Gabi, but would u do a video on how to apply wigs, also scalp care etc, for when u lose your hair due to chemo?? I was diagnosed with breast cancer on Nov 15th, had my surgery on Christmas eve, and am due to start chemo within the next few weeks... I'm going to lose my hair, and need help with the above topics badly. I'd like advice for an actual hairdresser, as you will have a wealth of valuable, trustworthy info, I'm sure. Many thanks, and keep up the great work!! X

Tracy: Yeah the L’Oréal Féria isn’t good for opaque gray coverage as well. Too be honest I don’t like opaque flat hair but the Féria really did wash out fast and didn’t cover a lot of the gray at at. I guess they are very sheer colors? It might be good for mixing it in with like you said an N or another brand or line better suited for gray. I mean the Féria really does have beautiful colors.

Toni Bello: Loreal got a professional salon brand called inoa which is oil base no armonia

Beauty Neytiri: i'm sorry to say but the so-called professionals are THE MOST full of B S. i have NEVER had a good experience having my hair done by ANY ''professional'' they all say completely different things and do everything in completely different ways. when i started teaching myself to do everything it bacame MUCH better and i realized that they have NO idea what they are talking about. granted, i'm not talking about coloring my hair. i'm mostly talking about cutting hair and knowing what to do when women have thin hair, but i'm sure a really good coloring professional will be very hard to find too. they all want people to believe they don't know anything and that they themselves know everything.

Erica Cruise: I was told ammonia free dye is just safe for pregnant woman.
