This is how you do a very elegant french twist on hair that is long, thick, straight and/or heavy and normally wants to fall down when it is put into an updo. Perfect for proms or weddings!

Tools needed: round brush, teasing brush, curling iron (3/4" to 1" barrel), 10-15 bobby pins, hair tie, hairspray, and a hair product like mousse, gel or paste. Optional: big flower pin or other accessory, water spray bottle.

I would describe this style as medium to hard difficulty, make sure you do a trial run before your formal event!

Hi, I'm Lea today, I'm going to show you how to do this. Updo, it's a French twist. A lot of us have thick straight heavy hair and it doesn't want to stay up in an updo. When you go to a formal event, you want to be able to dance and move around without being afraid that your hair is gon na fall down. First you're gon na need some aerosol hairspray. This is Majella fusion. It'S a Japanese brand, then you're going to need some gel or mousse or paste. This is read, can rewind it's a paste. The two brushes are round brush and a teasing brush with boar bristles. It doesn't have to be round, it could be flat. I need a curling iron. This is by Hot Tools, we're going to need one inch or 3/4 inch barrel. A hair tie like this and a lot of bobby pins, maybe 10 or 15, take your pace gel or mousse and put a whole bunch of it. In your hair, if you have really really long and thick hair, you could even wet it with a spray bottle. First and that'll help it stay. So we're gon na section out the top part of your hair twist it up and pin it for later then you're gon na take your hair tie and you're gon na make a very loose ponytail a little bit to the side. The hair tie really helps control. The hair and keep the style from falling out and you're gon na twist it and tuck the ends in if you're left-handed, the other side might be easier. If you're not used to it. This might take a couple, tries don't get frustrated, keep arranging until it looks good. Try to push the rule towards the middle, so it'll go as straight up and down as possible and you're, going to put in a whole bunch of pins, try to hide the pin. So they're not too visible, take the top section curl it with the curling iron and then tease it and spray it first thick hair. You always want to spray, while you're teasing smooth the top layer. So then, you're gon na take the curls and roll them all together, roll them down and pin them to the side. So then, when everything looks good and the hairs are all in place, spray, the hell out of it smooth out your veins and all the hair around your face, if you want to add a flower you can, you can also use it to cover up an awkward Looking area so there you go a French twist for our thick heavy hair. Hope you enjoyed watching, see you next time.

Lena Bickford: I love how polished and retro this looks. My french twists always look so flat towards the crown, now I see the remedy.

lanef58: Definitely, the most elegant and beautiful french twist I have seen. Thank you!!!

Supraja Rajendra: Clear, concise instructions, deadpan delivery and gorgeous hair..I've found my hair tutorial holy grail!

sugar.chef.jess: OMG THIS IS PERFECT! I definitely have very thick hair, & a lot of it too, & this is so incredibly perfect! It's exactly what I was looking for!

Rachelannerox: This was SO HELPFUL! and to all those people saying that this isn't thick... It looks a lot less thick than it is. People don't think I have thick hair until they touch it and feel the WEIGHT. Thin strands but I have A Lot of them.

ruth johnston: I wore French twist for years, putting it up by twisting it like to you do. but the top piece swirled around is what was missing. it really adds an extra je ne sais quoi, no? I love it. Thank you!

Danielle Lenart: This looks incredible- Thank you for catering to thick heavy hair, I can't wait to try it!

Dani R: You make it look so easy ! Loved the tutorial 3 thanku!

Terminally Perky: Thank you!! I've been trying to find how to do the top curl for a LONG time!!

Bookish Britt: Those bangs are kind of awesome and tie into the style perfectly. Thank you for doing a style for thick hair! I watch some of the hairstyle tutorials and they are doing the opposite and adding bulk to their hair whereas I'm lucky is there's enough bobby pins on the planet to hold my hair in an updo.

Jorgelina Gomez: It's Perfect! Thank you for the tutorial

TrangPak2: Omg you made this sooooo less complicated! THANK YOU!

Chile Pepper: Stunning and easy. Thank you xx

Lindsey Loon: Wow! You are stunning. You project both intelligence and artsy/sexiness. Thank you for this articulate and clear tutorial. I was just looking for a solution to tame my wild mane and I found a style icon. Stay graceful and keep inspiring! :)

Danielle Warner: I have very long, very thick hair, and this worked fabulously. It only took me a couple of tries to get it right, & it looks amazing. The hair tie trick is so helpful! I'm going as Adele for Halloween and wanted a nice beehive in the front. This is perfect & will last all night, I'm sure! THANK YOU.

canoodleson: I am so glad I found this. I've been trying to do a french twist and it's been so frustrating because I read it was supposed to be easy. My hair is super slipper and heavy and thick, but seeing you do it gives me some inspiration to try again. I can't wait to see how it goes! Anyway, I'm really bad at hair and don't own much stuff. Do you have any recommendations for a hair spray that I can find easily in the US? I don't know if I can find that Japanese brand you used.

SamSings: This is super useful, thank you! I have really long, thick hair which is also quite wavy/messy. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for a slightly more messy look? I want to style my hair as short as this, but it's for a cosplay, not a formal event, and my character has quite messy/untamed hair...

OHALEXA: simple to the point and easy..great video :)

mrs. bfd: such a good tutorial! thank you

Kary Daniela: THANK YOU SO MUCH!! my hair is long & heavy, you explained it so easy and quite simple not like other tutorials that take so long and bore me...

samantha: This looks so easy, but I know as soon as I try it, I'm going to get frustrated hahaha! Very well done, thank you (:

tigress63: Hi Lianne, I really liked how you made this into a very professional sleek looking French twist. So many of the ones that I see are sloppy and messy which really seems to take away from the chic look that a FT is supposed to be. It would be nice to see this on different lengths of hair as well - how one can improvise for the same look. It's simply beautiful!

daisy xox: This is beautiful!!!

Jocelyn Schmitz: Thanks! I am a white girl, with thick, straight, yet coarse, blonde hair, and every tutorial I would find the girls had such thin or fine hair (their ponytails were about a third of mine). Seeing this finally helped me to find a way to do a french twist!

AsKatherina: I am starting my cabin crew training soon and this is a really great tutorial, however one problem i have is that I can never really secure the twist well. I would love it if you made another video explaining in detail how to insert secure it. Thank you !!

T Patnaik: Wow that was really easy! Thanks!

ontheoffbeat14: looks great - I will try it out even that I have very thin and very long hair (that makes everything so difficult) :-) thanks for this tutorial!

Family&Music: Love this, u made this easy and cut clear to under stand exactly how to make this du possible thx

Esme Packett: Love the videos - can you do some edgy up-dos for curly hair (or ones that don't need to look so perfect and in-place - which is really difficult to achieve with curly hair)?

No more War!: Fantastic!thanks for sharing :)

zheahra: Nice. Very pretty. You make it look so simple.

Ale Collins: Great and easy, thanx!

luvPrincesa13: wow that really looks nice. The little curled part at the top just makes it even more gorgeous

Palucu: This was sooo helpful, I have seen many french twists on you-tube but most of the woman who offer a tutorial on that subject have light or thin hair. So I'm hoping to improve my up do hair style with this video. :)

Noelle S: Wow you sure made that look easy! Great vid! Ill have to try this sometime.... Love how you said don't get frustrated because I can see myself getting ready to rip my hair out if it didn't work the first couple of tries lmao!

Xoshil Morales: This was great !!  Loved it !

Nathalie Rae: THANK YOU! This is such a cute, quick hairstyle. I can already tell this is going to be my go-to style for work now.

Virginia Brown: Best twist tutorial ever, thanks for posting!!

HilBG: this is a different technique than I usually see, so this one might actually work on my hair! thanks!

fwuzzfwuzz: OMG, Thank you! So many poor tutorials by thin-haired girls for the french twist made me convinced that this was not possible with my extremely thick straight hair. Now it is.

Chelle Padriga: I'm going to try this one day! Thanks.

N7: Thanks for taking the time to make this!

happy2behere: Thank YOU! I have done all kinds of things with my hair, and my french rolls are messy. This one is beautiful. YOU are beautiful and I love the tattoo also! So since summer is coming and I ALWAYS keep my hair up because black hair is SO HOT!!

24jessejames: cant wait to try this!

chrisg45: Wow, that looks so chic & glamorous, I so wish I could wear my hair like that! I have extremely long hair, to my waist nearly, & it's wavy & slippery, & like, spits out bobby pins even if I hairspray the pins first. Also, it doesn't seem to ever want to hold a tease, like I can backcomb the hell out of it, & it just falls & I can practically run my hand right through it. I just can't seem to figure out how to get it to hold a tease & the pins to stay in

Liger Liger: LOVE!! Thank you!! :)

ariellexturtle: This just made my day. I've got a big presentation coming up in a couple days and had no idea how to do my hair... Now I know.

Poonam Gupta: Beautiful style

Lisa M-Q: thanks for this; helpful!!

Kayla Herrera-Daya: I've wondered how to do this. . .but it was difficult because when ever I try buns it ends up a sloppy mess of hair. I have to try this!

Ginger Tea: Very to the point! xd love this

Ivlia Blackburn: this looks really really fabulous and so professional. my daughter has hair long enough to sit on and its fine as well as heavy.  this looks as though it might work and stay up, nothing else does, so I'll give it a go.  probably need a can of hairspray though.
