This is a quick tutorial showing how to create "Flat-Iron Curls". Yes, you can curl with a FLAT IRON!!! Be sure to use a good heat protectant first! This style works alone or with any combo of hair techniques (braids, buns, twists, flips, topsy's, etc). This is very simply and helps the hair look more volumenous with an elegant style. This hairdo can be for moms, teens, and tweens as well!

Enjoy!

Hey I've had a lot of people write in and ask how to do flat iron curls.. So this morning I'm going to show this.. This is my daughter's hair. She showered last night before bed and it's just air dried. And she has just a little bit of wave to it.. But I don't particularly love the way it looks., So I usually either straighten it or flatiron curl it.. So I'm going to show you how to do that.. You just take a section of hair.. This is a one inch flat iron., And you put it up here and you twist the flat iron around the hair. And, as you twist pull down. And you'll, see that it gives a nice little curl to the hair.. You can do a little bit smaller sections. If you want. So again, apply it to the hair twist and then pull downward. And as you pull, it will curl the hair. And it gives that nice soft fun wave. So like on her hair, I will just come around it and quickly, flat iron, her hair. Just the top layer. And that's all I have to really do and it gives it a nice little wave with the curl attached to it., But I don't even bother with the under layers. Make sure your flat iron is really hot.. That'S important too.! You can see mine's smoking on her hair. And get that curl. Come to the front., Give her a nice wave., The more you turn it, the tighter you twist it and the more times the tighter the curl will be.. So I like mine, just sort of loose. And then I just kind of brush my fingers back through a few spots here and there. And on this side of the head I'll reverse the way I turn the curls. So it comes away from her face again. And if you get one like that, that just doesn't quite curl tight enough just repeat. Twist it a little tighter. And it will come out curlier, the second time.. Sometimes I get some that come out way too tight., And then you can do the same thing. Only just don't turn it quite as much. I found one. Wasn't very good again either. And then it will just be prettier the second time around.. Let'S get this spot up, here. Last one. Run my fingers through it.. You can see that that's just a lot lot, prettier, wave and curl to it. Actually looks like it was designed to be slightly curly instead of just kind of looking like she just woke up. And if I find little spots like if it was sitting like this I'Ll just go in and pull a little section out. And just curl that one little piece. Just so. I make sure that there's a little bit of curl even everywhere. And you're done

Mazie Kate: "This is my daughter's hair, I dont particularly love the way it looks, I usually curl it or flat iron it" Mother of the year

Lana B: I LOVE doing this to my hair. looks so cute and easy to do!!

Sylvia Leal: Wow! That is such a beautiful hairstyle! I'm completely incompetent with a curling iron, but this looks much simpler! Thank you so much. I will definitely try this!

jayanthi krishnan: Omg! This turned out so well for me!! I tried to do this many other ways for my sleek straight hair and it didn’t work. This time, within one time, it was beautifully curled. Thanks Mindy❤️❤️❤️

R P: It's so crazy how far this channel has come!!

abbeycharlie9: I would have loved to have you as my mom doing my hair everyday!

Rosa Crespo: I have been watching your videos for the past hour!!!! OMG I love them ALL! My daughter is 5 and she has alot thicker hair than your girls (she's a twin too-has a brother) and she is always asking me fix her hair pretty. Thanks to your videos I can finally make some really cool styles with her hair. She in Kindergarten now and loves to get all pretty before school. Thanks for the great ideas.

Kaitlyn Damiani: Cool. I tried it on my hair and it looked really pretty!

Julia P: Thanks sooo much! I was trying to curl my hair with a straightener and other tutorials were not clear enough/didn't work. But yours worked Yay! Thanks a lot I love your videos

Caroline DIY: Please please please more short hairstyles I love them and thanks for the flattering tip I just did it and it works great

Kara Grindstaff: i'm 16 and i love the hairstyles you do they are so cute! i have this brand straightner and i had no idea it could do that thanks so much for showing this!

Mariel McInnes: Love this hairstyle!!

Abby Coleman: Very helpful!! Thanks❤️

Jake Ferguson: When I was in second, third, and fourth grade I straightened my hair every single day and it is perfectly fine now. Her hair will be fine!

bitch17376: the videos are great! :) i can't wait till i have a daughter to use them on, but her natural hair is gorgeous, it doesnt NEED heat on it, especially since shes so young. that being said your her mommy and as long as she likes it who cares:D

Angela Isabel: it looks so pretty i never new flat irons could do that!

shelby lyn: Can you do an updated version of this hairstyle? Like a DIY.. P.S I love your videos.!

Katie Wilgus: Thanks! It helped a lot!

Mindy McKnight: @FashionableM I have straightened my hair for years, and those of my oldest two girls (not every day... maybe once every other week), and never had a problem. It has more to do with how well you wash and condition it also. If you perm it often, color it, rat it, straighten often, go out in the cold with wet hair... then you have a major problem! Thanks for the compliments on the hairdo and daughter!

Mariah Castellanos: Love it and it's so easy

Mindy McKnight: As you are pulling the hair, gently twist against the pull when you have 1/3 left in the strand.

ava richesin-dodd: Wow! I never knew you could do that! Thanks!

Noel Kucharczyk: Actually... It works on most types of hair. It's all about your technique when you curl it. It can be a little tricky to master. But I know like on my one friends hair she can't curl it and she thought it was her hair type but I took the flat iron and got it to work. There are also other techniques to try when curling with a flat iron. You can find them on YouTube.

Sarah Byington: She makes this look SOO easy. All I end up with is weirdly bumped hair and the lovely smell of burning hair. More practice?

Kyla T.: Wow , Is there any hairstyle you can't do ? You're amazing :P <3

Carleigh Johnston: This is so weird to see how far you have come on YouTube! I'm pretty sure this is one of the first videos I watched on your channel..

mdsnyderjr: She has my dream hair even without the flat iron curls.

Melane Alvarez: I have the exact same straightener for ove 8 years and is the best one I have ever had

jenniferlew88: Very cute!!! I love trying new styles! Thx!

Melissa: This video is awesome and the hair is sooooo cute!

Grace Taraborrelli: oh my goodness her hair looks adorable!! thanks so much for posting this. it so helpful to know diiferent kinds a haor styles i feel like i do mine the same way every day!

Ashley32395: that is so cute. i spend hours curling my hair with a reg curling iron. but only 5 min straightening it. i will have to try this :)

Gisela Vivanco: your girls are soooooo well behaved, and they are beautiful :) they are very very lucky to have a mom like you, my mom couldnt even do a pony tail. lol

Emily Sato: My sister does this on her self all the time and it looks really cute. Can you do hairstyles on hair that is like a 10 on a scale of 1-10? Please respond! (P.S my hair is a 10 on a scale of 1-10 and is VERY curly) If you can thats great! Please respond!!!!! <3 Thank you!

Jenna Kandeel: That looks really cute and I love that hairstyle! (2 flips on both sides) And my hair looks like that in the morning:( I hate it:(

Tori: I really love the way this looks but whenever i try to do this on my hair it just straightens it, do you have any idea what im doing wrong? please help(:

Saj RF: i love how all of the family are making the video! i find it really nice

Shelby L: What temperature would you recommend for the flat iron for this hairstyle?

onearkgirl: this is really good for chi's and i use my moms chi to do it and it turns out really pretty

bmxftw8787: Omg I love this and btw I love the little hair piece in the front that she has soooooo cute

Marlin: I love the way your daughter's hair looks naturally, I wish I had her hair <3

Rebekah Rice: I'm young enough that I can remember being that little girl's age, and I would have liked if mom could have done some hair doos for me that weren't with a giant bow on top of my head. Granted, using hot irons on her child's hair every day isn't great for the hair's health. There is nothing wrong with teaching your daughter to want to look good. Every little girl wants to feel pretty, and if having her mommy spend a little extra time on her hair in the morning does that, so be it!

Abby Cruz: Who's watching this in 2016? And who came here from Bailey's tutorial on how to do the triple knot? lol

holly lynn: I h ave that flat iron and its amazing for this. I also use it to crimp and make a beachy look to my hair.

EmmDiy: Great video plus I love her hair color so pretty

Jax: My mom never really did stuff to my hair except put it up in pony tails, when I was little. She hasn't had her hair long since middle school so she's not much of a help with my hair because she doesn't know how to do my hair, therefore I have no clue how to do my hair.

Mindy McKnight: @MIXIEandOLIVE So... you have never had a day when your hair was just dull... and you did not know what to do with it? That happended this day, and a few minutes with a flat iron turned it out pretty cute! My daughter asked me to put curls in her hair because she did not want any other hairdo that day. If you look at my other videos with this daughter, I think you will all agree that she has 'excellent' hair!

Heidi Zhang: My mom never did my hair. The most she did was put a clip in my hair or a pony tail like twice a week. She would do a simple braid once a year until I was about 6. I rarely even blow dry my hair even today and I didn’t use any hair styling tools until I was 13 and bought my own hair curler and straightener. I remember being obsessed with wanting curly hair. Now my hair is super damaged.

IceWiz101: Sweet, we got the same flat iron! :D

SuperBeautylover13: Love it

SuperBeautylover13: Love it

piercebex: I WISH my mom did my hair when I was her age. My mom told me to let it sit how I wanted it to. I ended up going to school embarrassed everyday because girls with perfect hair would make fun of my mess. Sure, letting girls be who they are and letting them know that it doesn't matter what other people think is a good thing. But forcing them to learn because of peer abuse like I went through all my childhood is not the way to do it.

Mindy McKnight: @jillybean1011 They were two sideways "flip-under's" using a Topsy Tail tool. I will be posting a video of how to do these in the coming weeks. Thanks!

Mindy McKnight: If and when I leave it down I do straighten or curl it--however with five kids (four of them being girls) we rarely do the down-do's. Too slow. Much faster to do up do's. So my comment in the video was accurate, it just that we don't end up doing this often.

janet lautner: gah! i have the exact same flat-iron!!! :D ♥

Kaitlyn Roylance: That girl will NEVER be made fun of for the way her hair looks (like I was when I was her age all the way us threw 9th grade) your a good Mom.

McKenna Huff: Your daughter's natural hair is beautiful.

IACO101: @xXgracexX333 I had one much to square and it didnt work out as well. I bought a new one at Walmart, the same as hers and it works great! I know the retail for about 15.00$ at most. Mine is 1 1/2 because then it straightens quicker but curls the same. The brand that I have is Andis Multi heat cerimic! Hope this helps

edeng: its so nice!!!

Mindy McKnight: @MoogleMan282 I would imagine that the smaller one works better. I have a large one, but have never used it in this way. You will likely have curls, but they may not turn out exactly the same volume.

Jenny V.: ❤love this

obsidienly: omg this is wicked all you tutorial are awesome

Alondra Perez: Cute <3 ☺️

RosieE: what if the curls dont stay? what do you put in it?

Sophie Magnet: <3 i like it

kaitlyn0409: does it work with a rounded edge flat iron that's made for curling and flatening??

Brook McJack: Bailey's so cute!!

clara kim: you're one GREAT mom. i would love my mom to do that for me, but she says she's BUSY. eh -_-

Martin Mc Namara: Hey i really like your hairstyles that you do and you are very good at showing how to do them.. But, i am concerned for your daughters' hair.. I was just wondering if you use haet protectant to keep it from getting damaged seens as they are still at a very young age??

Monica Ivanova: My god you curled her hair for 3 min it takes me a half an hour to curl mine :)

Mindy McKnight: @lloouuhh I appreciate your concern, I really do. I had my twins, one of which was in this video, read your comment. Their statement word for word, was... "What? I love my hair done in different styles... we get lots of comments and we feel good... plus we are amost 11, not 7-8 year olds!" Please know, a cute hairstyle allows moms to bond with daughters each morning, and the style itself can bring compliments which will build confidence in any girl. Thanks for the style compliment, though!

Mindy McKnight: @scencecutie28 As always, curls go flat after a time. I do not really have an answer unless you want to coat it all with alot of hairspray.

Mindy McKnight: @mommagiraffee She is 10-years old. We rarely straighten or curl... we did this for the tutorial only. Check out our website to see what kinds of hairdo's we make.

Victoria M: @CuteGirlHairstyles Hey my name is Victoria and I have the same type of hair as your daughter in the video. I would really appreciate it if you could make a video on how to control that type of hair without heat thanks alot. From a subscriber, Victoria

rebecca m: If you look in the description box you will see it says she recommends to use heat spray :) just saying x

xoxKirahB00: With my flat iron i tend to find that it is hard to turn on my hair almost that it gets stuck does that mean i need to clean it or something? Or it makes a sound while i slide it down any reccomendations?

Victoria M: @JuicyStuff09 Thx that really helped I'll try it

L. English13: The days when they did the videos on a bathroom counter :) Watching in 2K15!!

Mindy McKnight: @wnba1000 I do believe the rounded irons will not work effectively. There needs to be a squared edge.

Suzan Reji: i love this technique, but is there any way i can do this myself??? i tried it but it doesn't quite seem to work at the back..

Just watching videos: hi do you usually straight your daughter's hair? I asked this because I know that if you straighten or curl your hair too much or every day that it effects how long the hair grows and if you straighten it a lot hair can fall out.I'm not trying to be rude or anything this is what my friend told me so i not sure if its 100% right.

Heyers: Can you do this with a bigger straightener like the platform one plz answer

Mindy McKnight: I agree. Had run out, but now have more. Thanks!

Michaela D: thisis how my hair looks in the morning i think i found my daily styke lol its soo quick

Mindy McKnight: @RacahaelB11 It is with a Topsy Tail. Just a small, loose ponytail that is pulled through itself with that little tool. I use it quite a bit.

xoxKirahB00: I can set the heat on my flat iron. What is a good numer to set the heat on? And also what kind of heat protector should I use? And I have a perm so I don't know if all heat protectors are for different types of hair...but please answer as soon as you can thx! [:

nesa: Genius !!!

Elizabeth: i love how after all the stupid comments on this video she's always careful to say be sure to use heat protectant of course...even though she probably always did

HKS396: Awesome video! But can you do the curls on yourself and explain a little more what you are doing with the iron???

Hannah Heinemann: i have tht ssame iron like same size and everything i love it it wrks really good

makeuplover500: Who else is watching in 2015? And who came here from Baileys triple knot video for short hair?

tinafey14: I thought her natural wave look was cute but thanks for the tutorial

abi rucker: You guys have come so far!

Megan So: That looks a little painful, the way you pull her hair while you straighten... Do you have to pull that hard? Or will it come out okay if you just wrap your hair around the flat iron more?

Ariana's Bracelets: I did!!:)

Hannah Woods: It will ruin her hair if u keep doing that. Make sure u use heat protection oils.

Mary Bass: looove ittt! thxxxx!

Gabby Gansle: I live flat iron five in one. You can crimp, flat , curl , wavy, Modern updos

ilove u Last: can u do twisties and also are u hair stylist i love ur styles =)

Greta Helena: i wish my hair took 3:30 to curl instead of 50 minutes):
