I first noticed a variation of this on Kendall Jenner from the Kardashians, only she wore cornrows instead of twists. I like to use twists instead, because they are faster to do. If you were to do cornrows, this hairstyle could be used for a week or so.

Depending on where you part your hair, you could use only three twists or as many as five... it is all up to you!

Feel free to tag your own photos of this hairstyle with: #CGHSideFlatTwists

This is a fun look that takes very little time to do. I have our hair straight, but you could do this with curly or wavy hair as well!

Don't forget to tweet me at @CuteGirlHair and let me know if you would like to see Homecoming hairstyles or Back-to-School hairstyles!

Enjoy!

Items Needed: Brush, rat-tail comb, spray bottle, 1 alligator clip or large hair elastic, 4 small bobby pins, hairspray {if desired}.

Time Requirement: 5 minutes

Hey everyone., I'm Mindy from Cute Girls Hairstyles. And today I'm going to show you how to do the Side, French Twist.. So this is a very fun style, that's kind of edgy and slightly punk.. It looks like you kind of shaved, your head on one side when you really didn't. So bonus, you don't have to shave your head. I'll. Tell you more about it as I get doing the twist., But I have started on her hair by just parting, where she normally parts which, for her is the left. And we have the heavy side, which is where the majority of her hair falls and then the Light side. We're going to be working with the light side today.. So I'm going to take just kind of from the back of her part about down to her ear. And I'll turn her. So you can see. So we're just going right behind her ear.. It doesn't have to be exact., You can just do whatever you feel comfortable with. And that's going to be our little segment that we're going to use.. So when you've got that all parted off, then pull the rest of the hair over to the side so that it just stays out of the way., And I should have grabbed a clip, but I didn't so be. Advised. You'll need a clip as well.. Ok now from this point, what we're going to do is tip-tip-tip her head. And I'm going to just divide a small section., I'm roughly going for about four twists. So if you keep that in mind., This is where you would normally lay that over and clip it. But I'm just going to have her hold it since I didn't grab a clip. So to start the twist --. Ok, so I first --. Let me explain.. I saw this originally on Kendall, Genners' hair. And it looked really cute, but she had corn rows. In. And corn rows are great., They look great, but they are just a little bit slower.. So I'm actually going to do a French twist., So you're going to take a little piece at the beginning and divide into two sections. And just remember that you're always twisting upwards towards the top of the head.. So once you've twisted once add a little piece of hair to the bottom and twist upward again., Add a little piece of hair to the bottom twist upward.. You can see that we're only adding hair to the bottom strand. Twist upward. And continue to do that until you run out of hair or you kind of hit that back part that we originally sectioned. And then stop.. I learned how to do these little twists because on my little black daughter's hair, --, OK so take a bobby pin and you're going to just put the bobby pin over that section. Whoops. Sorry. And then just push it down. In. My hands are funny. OK.. Take it and tuck it in. That's much better. And that's just going to hold that whole twist into place.. So we're going to section off our next piece.. Remember we're going for about four.. You can do more or less. You can do three.. You can do five. Just whatever you want, depending on the thickness of your hair or how high up your part goes, -- all that stuff. And so on. My black daughter, --. Of course, you know their hair's really different. And lots of braids and twists are involved in doing her hair., And I learned how to do these because they look so much like corn rows from far away that people often mistake them for corn rows., So they're kind Of like a secret thing that the moms of little black girls use when they don't want to do corn rows., They just do these cute little twists, and then they look just as good., So OK. We're twisting upwards still. Twisting twisting. And again when we run out Of hair from that section, then just grab a bobby pin. For some reason. I actually think these bobby pins are easier to do on. Yourself. OK. Put it over that little twist and then just push the bobby pin down inside that twist. And that's going to hold it really tight for the rest of the day. Head up. Just a little please. We'll divide off our last section., So get it where you want it.. I like that ending right, there., OK, that's better. And again take a small piece at the beginning.. Remember just always twisting upward only adding hair to the bottom.. What I like about these twists versus just a regular flat twist is that it adds a little texture because of the bumpiness when you're pulling the strands. In. I'll show you what I mean in just a second.: OK, so here.. Can you see how it's just a little texture where you're pulling the strands in That's what makes it look deceiving like a corn row. Is that little added texture to it.? So if you did a regular twist --, for instance, on a normal twist, you would just grab the hair and roll it all like this backwards. And it just wouldn't look quite as jagged on the top. As a French twist., OK tip your head back please. Last section -- twist twist. Her bangs tend to go off sort of on a diagonal, so this top twist on her might be slightly diagonal., That's OK. OK. And when you're done with that top twist again, bobby. Push it down into the twist. And it'll, be secure., Then simply undo the hair Grab a brush and re-brush the rest of the hair. And then we're going to comb all the rest of the hair. Over to this side. And, of course, add a little hairspray to hold any little flyways or anything that we need to in place. And you're ready to go.. It'S a really quick hairdo.. It doesn't take much time., It's simple to do on yourself.. I did these on myself this morning., So it's very easy because you're just working right here by your ear., So it's great and I think you'll love it., Hey, tell me what you think. You would rather see next -- another back to school, hairdo or I know with school starting people are already starting to worry about homecoming.. So go to my Twitter., It's @ CuteGirlHair. And leave me a comment or send me a tweet. Not a comment telling me if you'd rather see homecoming, hair or back to school styles. We'll see you guys, later. Bye, bye, [, MUSIC PLAYING ]

Elizabeth Gama: I'm black and I don't see what's wrong with her saying black, besides black people are not just African American. They can also be African like me or Jamaican or Haitian so there isn't anything wrong with saying black. Same with white people. They come from all over the place. It is just easier to call people black or white or Asian depending on their race. There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. As long as we are all being respectful to each other.

Reshan George Javier: This becomes my favorite everyday hairstyle, since I got a very short hair and I can't do a lot on my hair (which is really frustrating). My classmate said it's cute and she liked it.

Xilin Long: The tutorial is really really great ! It's very clear and very easy to learn ! Thank you so much !!! I love my new hair style ;)

McKinley T: Mindy responded to some comments a while ago that she didn't say African American because her daughter is not from Africa, she's Caribbean so just using black was more accurate. I'm sure she didn't mean to offend anyone.

noturaverage AJ: This looks so cool on my hair. Thanks for the tutorial!

DinaSonrisa: love this hairstyle! i'm gonna try it for school tomorrow :D

Ma. Jhonna Angelie Mangampo: Thank you so much! Worked on my hair. I loved it!

Candace Marquette: Thank you so much for this tutorial! You are very talented. I found you because my mixed daughters, who have a black mother(me), wanted new and cool hair styles. You are amazing, and a cool mom!

xenji taylor: For all you people who keep saying that she was being racist when she said " my little black daughter's hair", she isn't. If she was racist, she wouldn't have two adopted black kids. Again she is not racist, she was saying that her adopted baby girl has different textured hair. Why does everything have to be all about race? There is only one race and that is the human race. We are all the same people, just different shades.

Kyrah’s Thoughts: I love this video so much, it has saved me because I have to braid someone's hair tomorrow morning and Im like I don't know how to do cornrows! Thank you so much for making this video

shelby emmett: Omg!! This is so beautiful! I love how it is like a cheat sort of way of cornrows as I really struggle with cornrows! Maybe, could I try securing them with a elastic instead of a bobby pin as I want to wear them for the whole week for school!? Thank you ❤ Sx

annaaiiss 1: this is way easier than conrow ones thank you so much this helped me a lot!

ennagrom: When people don't realize that the reason she said "my black daughter" was probably to imply that the hairstyle is good for that hair type. Triggers-- triggers everywhere.

Jenna Bela: this helped a lot! new years outfit woooh! <3

mary: I can't braid for my life and I was able to do this, so, thank you!

Rachel O'Loughlin: Hey! Thanks so much for your video!!! I love this look from Vikings and wanted to try it on my thick wavy hair. This is a cool trick ! You rule cute girl mom )))))

Monkeyart: It's so cute! Love it!

Adrianna flowers: I really like this hairstyle and I think it's really pretty. GREAT JOB MINDY!

Abigail M: love getting this done while on vaca!

Georgia Morris: This hairstyle actually looks really cool

ffs oana: I basically did the same, except I continued down to the other side and then braided it normally. Thanks :)

Tanya Dolan: I wore my hair like this and was called out for cultural appropriation. I'm Mexican, have course hair and have been doing twists in my hair for a decade and pretty much got called a racist because they assumed I was white

Anel Goosen: Thank u sooooooo much. I have been trying soooo hard with the cornrow but now i found an easyer way

Avery Nellum: This is cute! My auntie does her hair just like this but on the opposite side! I love this style

SissyBoutchou: amazing & easy!! thank you so much for such great idea!! ^-^

Nash Bant: Seen so many comments saying that she is racist but the video is about A HAIRSTYLE!! I love this hairstyle and it works on short hair too!! Thanx xx Ps. Ignore the haters babe!!

Norah Holder: This looks so cool. I want to try it out, maybe if I get my split ends trimmed

Mays Alhorainy: It's very easy thank you very much ❤️

ella: This is way more simple than it looks!

Samsung Mendez: thankyou. awesome video. i always loved this look and could never master it on myself. this video really improved my technique

Becca M: I think she says "little black daughter" because it specifies the type of hair she has.

Harriet White: This is amazing! I have short hair and I'm so excited to try. It might not work but at least I tried! ☺

Janithya: I love this idea I tried it and it looked great

Alaa Fouad: I did it and it looked amazing even my friends and family loved it thx very much :) :*

Alaa Fouad: I did it and it looked amazing even my friends and family loved it thx very much :) :*

Nicki Mason: Im waiting for Amandla to pop outta nowhere and start talking about 'black appropriation'. Im black too (Haitian) and the fact that she says black does not bother me. Thats just what it is, BLACK. That's how you identify. Get over yourself; this is why we look so bad cause we take things out of context :/

janet050384: I'm so trying this hairstyle today for my daughters first day of school! Super Jazzed! Blessed day everyone! :)

Julia Moira: I did the side french twist it turned out awesome

Roses eches: i was searching for this tutorial for a really long time , thank you soooo muchh

Mellanie Tostado: Thank you so very much. I am Mexican and Black and me and my daughters have curly locks of hair. My youngest wants me to learn how to twist and braid to the head, and I have not been able to, but I found you!! And I have made great progress in twisting!! Thank you again it is truly appreciated! I know how it to be mixed in this World and I appreciate the fact that you are proud to be a mommy of a black child!

lillost: Apparently acknowledging someone's race is AUTOMATICALLY racist... SMH. If she just said "Daughter" people would automatically assume she's referring to a young girl who's also white (LIKE HER). She's just showing that some styles done on little black girls can also be done on little white girls (or other races with with very fine straight hair). While we all do look the same on the inside there are things that differentiate us from one another on the outside; eg: height, body shape, and Yes, skin color.

Jentrian Everlark: I am a huge fan of Cute Girls Hairstyles! I always braid and style my own hair. I just tried this hairstyle and I love it! I am thinking about trying it on my little sister's hair. Her hair is thin so it is hard to find hairstyles that will work with her hair. One style that works amazingly with her hair are the straw curls. It is tedious so I don't do it often but when I do style her hair with the straws she looks like she has Annie's curls because my sister's hair is naturally red. I am hoping I can do this hairstyle on her and that it will work! I also hope that she will like it!

Amelia McCready: This is my FAVORITE cute girls hairstyle video ever!!!!! I love it so much!!

Kitty Carly: Loved this hairstyle!

Raven Razor: I like doing cornrows (French braids) because you can braid the rest of the hair instead of using the bobby pins and it stays in for 2 weeks on me. (probably longer if you have really curly hair or your black lol)

Aiisha Baybiiee: you make it look so easy

Elise Van Den Berghe: Very easy to follow video! Thanks! Also, I think it's awesome that you've adopted black children. That's very admirable. In my opinion, when you say the word "black" or use "black" as a way to describe someone it doesn't make you racist.

Omar Safan: Love this hairstyle :). Can u do a french fishtail?

madison hilton: love this hairstyle!!!

Leini Ramos: I love this style. I did this but the braided version. I did it today, i love it. My friemds actually thought i shaved my hair. . Lol.

Hayzee Skies: she is just being accurate. its not like she is talking down about about her daughters race, she is making a point. i have mixed roots and my hair is more "black girl" textured. but if someone made a comment like that i wouldn't be offended because its the truth. black girls and white girls have different types of hair usually. instead of getting offended by her choice of words, be proud of who you are and stop nit-picking over stupid little details.

shanice nucci: i did it! it looks so COOL!

Nora Treviño: Hermosa jovencita y hermoso peinado gracias bendiciones

Keianna Miller: I spend too much time getting ready for school. Ending up having little time to do my hair. This video helped me out with that. So now I have a look for back to skool

katie Palomo: So going to try this!

Juanita Sirilo: people are truly ridiculous *smh*. half of the people calling her (what i assume is supposed to be)"racist" literally cant even spell it. get over it people. is "black lives matter" racist as well? Anyway...... hair style is easy and beautiful!

Maina Ahmad: This is awesome I loved this it's really easy to do and it is beautiful and cute I love. This

meridian crow: I love it so much it was really easy

shootingstarrox: Awesome! im wearing these to school tomorrow and ai was wondering if u could do more long hair tutorials

Aisha Rafi: that was lovely ...gonna try it for sure

Annalise _23: Could I use elastics instead of bobbypins?

PatriotsMakeup: thanks for the video! :) really helped.

Shannon Carter: This reminds me of how Tatiana Maslany had her hair styled in the first episode of Orphan Black. I've wondering how to do it. This is simple and easy. Thanks. :)

Empress Lala: I LOVE IT!!!

noronahahaha: i've been trying to find ways to emulate sarah manning's hair from orphan black, i think the french twists are my favorite (doing a french braid with such whispy hair on myself is very frustrating).

00weirdo: I love watching the tutorials, but I just can't do them!!! :D

Aoi Enriquez: I love this hairstyle :) thanks for the tutorial!! iwill subscribe you ;)

selena diaz: 1. thats a very amazing and cute hairstyle 2. i would like to see some more back to school hairsyles for girls please

jenny zhao: that is incredibly pretty!!!

Bun-E: Everyone talking about her ethnicity please gtfo, most of us came here to admire this wonderful hair technique, but then only to find these bigoted fools displaying ANGER? Please stop getting offended so easily, and embrace those around you.

Jesus Mejia: for your next video can you make three side bradies fast and easy!!☺

Kayla Victoria: I was thinking of doing this hairstyle for my first day of high school on friday(:

Zaira Ramos: Love it:)

sammy jaimes: This is amazing now i could do this on my sister befor going out!(; & what mascara dose she usee her makeup is perfect & her eyes

MsShopaholic2011: It isn't racist HOWEVER she could have used different words to describe the differences of her daughters. For instance, she could have used names or she could have said her other daughter who has different textures. So I can understand why some people are taking offense to it.

Cari Hendrix: Oh my goodness! Scrolling through these comments, and I can't help but laugh. People get so butt hurt nowadays! lol Anyway...I tried this hair style on myself and my sister, and it turned out super cute! Thank you for the great tutorial!

Freya xo: so cool asking MY mum to do it!!!

madison barbrick: Thank you so muchh!!!! Nothing else worked but this really helpedd!!

Annabelle Michaelis: Wow ,very good!

Nazit Farid: I make this hairstyle on me like everyday its so cute

Arwa Ag: thank you i love it

Chip Squeaks: My friend wanted me to do her hair in a similar way to mine ,for a play we want to do with our school, only she doesn't want to commitment (My left side is shaved.) and this looks very easy to do. However is there another way I could secure the twists, or is the bobby pin the only option?

Caroline Chalue: I actually shaved my side of my head , it's called a side cut , some people mistake side cuts with under cuts

Caroline Heater: I love this look omg

jessica shum: omg!!! I love cute Girls Hairstyles!!! keep going, Mindy! ur the BEST!!! :)

Noblebird02: Thanks for this video. Trying to do these twists on white hair was not easy.

Lizette Aceves: Can’t wait to try this on myself

Mikayla: Im so glad i found this video i really love this hairstyle

Janis Reeves: I know this is an older video, but is there a reason why you secure with bobby pins and not a small elastics? I like this idea for Summer and all the running and playing that will be happening. It will help keep hair out of the way.

Grizel Gracia: this is my 3rd time watching this I can't stop watching it I just love it

Haley Jarnigan: Firstly I would love To apologize for the people focusing on your words... As opposed to your hair styles! I looked high and low for this style and I am so thankful you've posted it.
