Hi everybody, so today i'm going to be showing you six ballet hairstyles three are classic high bun low bun and french twist super easy french twist and three are character: styles, a giselle, the classic, balancing sugar, plum and, of course, the ever popular juliet, which a lot Of you have asked me how we did our hairs juliet. I am going to be doing these with extensions some. I wear extensions. Some. I have my hair pieces because my hair is short and very thin right now, because i chopped it off after nutcracker. So if you have a lot of hair great, you don't need them, but you can always buy cheap extensions on you know any beauty, supply store or even amazon, because remember this is going to be on stage you're going to do this in class. They don't have to be great. You know beautiful, expensive, hair extensions, so no pressure there, but i did have to use hair extensions just because of my hair right now, but that's up to you. So, let's get into it. So we are going to start with the classic low ballerina bun. This is actually very, very simple. You want to make a low ponytail at the base of your neck, but give yourself enough space down there to so. The bun can sit. So do your ponytail, as you normally would smooth out your frizzies, make sure it's exactly how you want it, but look at this ponytail. I'Ve got a little bit of space down there. This bun is actually really really easy. You'Re just going to take the hair and start twisting either way doesn't really matter. Don'T worry about the little ends as you'll see my ends kind of stay out, but you can get them in and then you're just going to twist around the base of the ponytail and pin as you go. I'M sure a lot of you know how to do this already. A little trick, though, is when you get to the bottom oftentimes. We look lopsided because we pull the bun too tight, so i want to show you instead of pulling it really really tight. Let it a little loose see how i go back to the left a little bit just make it a little bit looser. It'S still going to stay, i promise so just tuck and pin tuck and pin tuck and pin, and that is the basic low bun really really simple, very very elegant if you're not a dancer. This is a great look for an evening out as well. So now i'm going to show you how to turn this into giselle. You want to make a middle part that is so not in the middle, but hopefully i fix it. There we go make a middle part with your hair and then we're going to take some of the front sections and we're going to leave them out of the bun. So you want to take some hair towards the front of your head and leave it out of that ponytail back there. So just make the low bun, as we did low ponytail put the hair around pin it do your classic ballerina low button. Now this is something that you might actually have to practice a little bit, because it is a little bit tricky to get it right. It took me a couple of times, so you want to take the hair pulling it down and over your ear over the ear is the most important thing for gizelle and then you're going to pin the hair in the back um towards your bun. Don'T worry, we're going to clean it up later, but you're going to pin it there right at the base of the ear right towards the bun and then whatever hair, you have left you're going to put it back into the bun so just kind of twist it Around pin it do the whole thing and that's how you get that swoop over the ear. You can clean it up if you want, but, like i said, we're going to get it at the end. So let's do the other side, so you want to pull the hair down and forward down and forward that's really important, and then you want to press it see forward over the ear those little baby hairs will be sprayed in a second, and then you want to Pin it down there close to the bun and close to your ear, you'll figure out where you can best, pin it as you practice this. But the most important thing is that that hair covers the top of your ear, and then you want to just work it into the bun, as you normally would like. I said this takes a couple of times to get: don't wait till your giselle performance to figure this out, then you can clean up the top. You can smooth it out. You can spray it down. You will need a lot of hairspray and gel to keep this in place, but that's how you get that very old-fashioned ballerina over the ears. Look for gisele! It'S just that separate hair and there is your classic giselle. It'S just the same low bun with some pieces left out and put over the ears. So now we're going to switch gears and do the high bun and the high balancing bun. So we're going to start with the basic one. You want to make a high ponytail and because of the length of my hair for this, i can't quite get it as high as i want to so you can either bend forward or just stay standing, and you want it sort of to be on a diagonal With your chin, which is why mine's a little bit short, but i'm going to use this clip here to clip up those ends if you have short hair, this is how you can do it clip up the ends, and then you can use a bobby pin to Kind of secure it in place, which is what i did so i'm going to use my long hair piece for this, and if you have long hair great otherwise you can get a long hair piece as well. So this is kind of the basic high bun. You have two options here: you can do the round. Bun like we just did in the low bun and just sort of wrap it around and do your normal. You know circular bun, but i'm actually going to show you how to do an elongated bun. So we're going to start the same you wrap around as you normally would, and instead of going this way we're going to go angularly, we are going to go straight across with the hair, so you want to go to the right instead of thinking ground, we're going To do a line, so you want to go across, pin that hair and then, instead of going up and around we're going to loop back to the left, so it's kind of going to create a squiggle. So really, what will help is, if you put it in your finger and then switch it back around and then go back the other way, so we're thinking more flat than round and you're just going to really go back and forth. With this bun down your head, the length of the bun will depend on how long your hair is, how much hair you have. That'S. Why i like using a hair piece but see you have the round on top and then we're going to squiggle to the end. So once i get back to the left, i'm going to squiggle back around to the right - and you do this until you have no hair left and then just tuck the ends in somewhere. You know and you'll have to figure this out again. Look at your head! Look in the mirror kind of figure out your shape is the best way to do this and then tuck those ends in, and this is sort of the basic high bun more elongated. Again, you could go for the round on top, but i personally prefer when it is a high bun to go a little bit more elongated. But now i'm going to show you how to do the balanchine sugar plum bun, which is what i did for nutcracker. So i'm using two hair pieces and if you have a lot of hair for this, just divide your hair in two sections. So for one section, i'm going to use my shorter hair piece we're actually going to combine the two buns we've already done. So the first thing i'm going to do is create just a normal round: donut bun, really on the top of my head, and this is for height and volume. So don't really worry about how it looks just make a round lump on the top of your head, and i kind of like to look at it in the mirror and see. If i can see it, i'd like to get it that high that you can see it when you're facing straight forward so just make a lump, then use your second hair piece or your second section. If you're, using your real hair and we're gon na, do the elongated bun over the lump so start it on the left, bring it around to the right and then do your squiggle back and forth over that bun and again play around with this. How you want to do it using the two sections just makes this bun bigger, so you want to do the round donut on the top and then use your second section of hair and just do the squiggle don't go around so go back and forth back and Forth back and forth, and you see how i got to clean this up a bit. Do you see how i went over that bun and this turns into the big elongated sugar, plum balanchine version of this bun see how it's a little bit bigger a little bit more voluminous and a little bit further down my head. So two sections, instead of one so now, i'm going to show you the easiest french twist in the world and it'll change your life totally so start with making sure the hair in the front looks good how you want it to and create a low ponytail again. But obviously we're not going to put it in a ponytail this time and normally french twists go with the ends going up. That'S how people normally do it? Oh, no, no watch this. What you're going to do is you're gon na twist it from the base of the ponytail. Put it in one hand, with the other hand, grab it and then twist up and under so the ends fold in and then you tuck the ends in as you go up and form the twist from there, and that is it watch one more time. So from the base of your ponytail hair is in one hand, base of the ponytail, then grab it in the other and then twist up and under so the ends fold in and don't worry about those short hairs, i'll get them in a second. I will pin them in and then you just pin just form your french twist as you normally would pin as you go, you might have to work the top a little bit to how you want it, but that is it and it really keeps it tight. The ends really stay in and see even if you've got short hair. Look. All i got to do is pin the ends in um and work in the mirror figure out what shape you like. But i'm telling you guys this french twist will change your life and it looks pretty from all angles: it's a nice, elegant, updo, okay! So now i'm going to show you the last look, which is of course juliet. This is exactly what they did on us when i danced it, so we're going to use a clear elastic and we're going to do a half up, half down, don't put too much hair in this. Otherwise you don't have very much down. So it's a small section and make sure it's in line with your ears. You don't want it to be too high. Um top of the ears is a good benchmark for this, because this section is going to become the braids make sure you clean up the top. Now, because the more you do that the better the braids will sit so dividing this section into two pieces again, the more hair you have here, the bigger the braids will be, but the less you have down so spray one side. A little bit of a braid is fine. It doesn't have to be perfect. We'Re going to pull it out in a second put another little elastic on it. If you want to to keep it in place and then we're going to pull this braid out to make it a little bit thicker, so it shows up a little bit better and then all you're going to do is you're going to loop this around and place It on your head make sure you're happy with it again. That'S why we wanted that half a path down section a little bit lower, so the braid sits lower on your head, then you're just going to pin it pin it into place again. You have to look in the mirror, make sure you're happy with it make sure it's sitting right where you want it to don't worry about the ends, yet we're going to tuck it into the other side in a second. So don't worry about the ends yet so that is one side now we're going to do the same thing on the other side, so take the other side and start braiding. This is where they would put fake hair in for me into these braids. They didn't put fake hair down, but i had fake hair in these braids to help the thickness. That'S another option that gets a little complicated. So do your braid put a little elastic and make it thinner and then place it on top of your head. The trick is to make it even with the other side near your ear. Don'T worry about the back, we're going to fix that in a second, and you can always hide the bobby pins as well. If you see your bobby pins are sticking out, you can kind of maneuver around to put the hair over it. It is possible and then you're going to pin this section up. Just like you did the first side now we're going to tuck the ends in as well so make sure those ends get tucked in underneath the braid they'll just wrap around. You can also use them to hide the elastics on top of your head. That'S another thing that i do and just kind of pin them in place again. This takes some practice. It takes some time to make sure you're happy with it, but we really only had this singular braid. Some companies with juliet the braids are entirely fake and they do a double braid. Now take a little piece of hair from the bottom and wrap it around that elastic. So it hides it. It'S a much cleaner look and that sort of fixes the back as well. Then you can't see the elastic. Finally, if you want to soften it, pull out some of the little hairs little curls. It just gives it a softer look rather than a slicked back look, and that is juliet like i said, some companies do double braids. I believe the macmillan version does that and the braids are entirely fake, they're their own headpiece, but for us at new york city ballet, our braids were part of our hair, and this is what we did. So i hope you guys enjoyed this. I know i haven't done a hair tutorial in a long time, so i was inspired to do it, especially the pretty character styles. They do take some practice for me, especially the balanchine bun guys. We did it every day, almost so it's one of those things that once you get the pattern once you get, you know it takes practice like ballet um, so just practice you'll get the hang of it. Um don't beat yourself up. It took me forever to get these, but anyway, if you enjoyed this, give it a thumbs up. Let me know what other things you might want to see in the box below. If you missed the latest video, it's right there, you can click it to watch love. You all so very much and i'll see you next time.

nessagirl1911: All of these styles look so pretty and they even work for us non-dancers. The Balanchine bun and the French twist would look great for special occasions like weddings, the rest are also nice for everyday wear.

The Bookwyrms Lair: I love seeing the historical references within the ballet styles. The 1830s comes through Gisele, the braids almost make the hair look like an Italian Renaissance netted coif. So pretty!

🚀The Sofia Notes - Student Lifestyle & Culture: *_Imagine how elegant you'll look running errands with these hairstyles_*

littlebumgorf: I do the French twist just like that as my everyday style, but with a jaw clip because I’m lazy. I have super heavy hair, but it works! No more ponytail migraines!

balletlau: "This French twist will change your life." Cue my skepticism. But oh wow, this is the first French twist method that has EVER worked for me. And it is so easy! Thank you!

Laura Brown: Love her so much, these styles all look so pretty. I’m going to be a prima ballerina at Walmart from now on

Jade-Adele McConchie: The french twist one honestly changed my life!! Thank you for saving all my time and energy i will be wearing this all the time time now

Viet Coffee Beans: I’ve never had to perform in the “Giselle” hairstyle, but every time I’ve ever tried it on my own out of curiosity, I ended up feeling like a Founding Father caked in too much Göt2B. Kathryn, on the other hand, looks gorgeous!

The Bookwyrms Lair: Your French twist is how I would get my hair out of my face and hold it with a pencil in high school! :) For fine, slick hair that laughs at any curlers, it actually stayed in with one pencil! :) Of course, I was just sitting in class, so there wasn't much strain...

Dancer4Jesus: Thank you so much for showing the Juliet hairstyle I requested! This really helped a lot! I can’t wait to try it!

DestinyHopeLou: Thank you for mentioning that you are wearing hair pieces/extensions. I‘m all for being real. And sometimes in hair tutorials the people have so much luscious hair and don‘t mention any fake hair, it sets unattainable beauty standards and makes me feel bad about the hair that I do have.

Emily Adams: Thanks, Kathryn! I don't do ballet, but I could use these hairstyles for theatre when it starts up again after the latest lockdown (I live in Ontario). Anyway, I really like the way you break everything down step by step, to make it easy to follow along. :)

Catlady Lion: Thank you so much for making this detailed video on ballerina hairstyles!!! I have always admired ballerina’s fashion and would love to cooperate it with my daily outfit style. This video is so helpful . That French twist is changing my life, I have been trying to do French twist since 2015 but I never could make a good one, I will give all the hair styles a go tonight . Thank you and stay safe

Courtney and Co: Would love to see more ballet inspired ballet barre and center classes! Some of my favorite ballets are Giselle, Romeo and Juliet, and Sleeping Beauty. Would love to see a Nutcracker class as well!

Allison Stone: So beautiful ✨ Especially I like French twist and Juliet It's awesome tutorial, I'm gonna try it definitely!!!

Grace Horacek: Just what I needed to spice up my first week back at school next week! I’m so pumped to try these!

Leonie Hochhold: I'll definitely try the french twist for next class, always wanted to do it but never knew how p.s. you're so so pretty Kathryn, love your channel

Katie O'Connor: These are beautiful!! Thank you for posting - I agree with the below comment that these styles are great even for us non-ballerinas I love your dancing and encouraging positive body image. Thank you for being such a good role model especially to young, up and coming ballerinas. It is much needed. Blessings!

Melissa N: I went through 6 French twist tutorials today and this is the one that finally worked. Thank you!

roliboom: Lovely! You are giving me Vivian Leigh vibes in this video! Such a beauty ☺️ I'm going to try them all

Anna Hess: Thanks so much for this video! Its going to be so helpful to know how to these styles before we actually do the shows that require them!!

Galina Popov: This is so detailed and inspirational video. Thank you so much Kathryn! You skills, experience and talents are highly appreciated. Beautiful video!❤️

Selina Chih: French twist is always my struggle. Thanks a whole lot for this video!! I love all the beautiful buns, elegant and beautiful! Thank you for sharing! ❤

Alex Gatto: Loved this video! A tip for "pancaking" or fluffing braids from another fine haired lady, instead of pulling on the entire strands of the braid if you pull just a SECTION from the outer edge of each strand it provides much more internal friction and the braid will fluff much more effectively instead of just pulling apart and getting loose!

Mei M.: These hairstyles look gorgeous, I especially love the Juliet one!

Fashionista Ballerina: I feel like the most important thing when it comes to buns is a good ponytail. It is basically the base of your bun so if its clean and tight your already partially there to having a good bun. :)

Susan Wylie: Thank you for this as you have made me remember the rather weird Royal Academy hair style my mother battled with every time I did a ballet exam in New Zealand in the 1960s. Regulations required a hairband pulling the hair off the face, which was then smoothed over the ear and put into a small bun ...all in a fine hairnet...A bit like a Giselle style but flat with less style!! On 8 year olds! That along with the very pink tights and the ‘sharkskin’ tunic made us look very strange.

lightlysaltedchips: they’re lovely juliet’s hair looks so great on you!

Juliana M Sandoval: These are all so pretty! I’ve been wearing my hair in a French twist for months, but I found a cheater way with a clip. Can you show exactly how to put the pins in? I have never been able to use them correctly. They always fall out.

Keara S.: That’s how I’ve always done my twists (back when I danced. And had hair). Either that way or from the top down. So much easier to tuck everything in that way.

lubeeluonline: If you have lots of hair, I find it useful to do the high ponytail in two stages. Put hair half up first so you get the placement right & secure with an elastic. Then scoop the rest up, add it to the original ponytail & add another elastic. Then get twisting. I struggle with the back looking baggy & this allows me to get a sleeker look.

Allie A: I used the French twist tip for class last night and it worked so much better than what I’ve been doing!

a. Phillips: All the styles look so pretty on you!

susanna rita: These are beautiful, but as a fellow short/thin hair gal I would love some tips and tricks for hair in class. I'm starting ballet as a beginner this year and honestly the hair is the most intimidating part lol

Jessie Borrell: Love this, Katie! Your skin looks gorgeous by the way. And I love your top!

Maria Rev: Okay, that French twist was really interesting and I feel like it might work even with my shoulder length curly hair. And I mean curly, not wavy. A lot of straight and wavy styles do not work on my hair.

cece121234: Really beautiful hair styles. I've always been challenged with doing anything with my hair...

Iris Cunha Dias: I loved it!! Could you teach the hairstyles from the ballets Le corsaire and Coppélia? Please I would love to learn more.❤️

Judith Valerie Engel: Love this video!! Do you have any advice how to do the french twist when you have really, really long hair?

Kira Helen Rose: Low bun looks so lovely on you!

Moondustangel: Love this so much. Can you please do a video where you explain the differences in the makeup you use depending on what character you are dancing? I would find that so interesting.

Lindsay Owens: Love these hairstyles so much!

Claire Waldroup: So pretty! Love this video!!

melodyleong: That's how I do my french braids too! Total game changer. Could never do it the traditional way.

DollyJohanne: Thank you for sharing! Nice to see, even though I don’t do ballet anymore Love from Johanne, Norway

Catherine Carney: I wish I had known this when I did Pas de Quatre. I can't remember how I did my hair but getting the hair over the ears was not easy. Of course, it's been nearly 40 years since then. "What you don't remember?" I love your smile.

Ilaria Rigoni: what a beautiful video! I just discovered you and I am new to ballet. :) I think my hair is still a bit short for the bun, it's just above my collarbone. I love your hair colour, you look like a princess. I would like to know how often do you wash your hair? I've heard that 2nd day hair helps to have a better bun. I can't wait for my hair to be a bit longer so I can try these styles! :)

jasmin sheng: These are beautifulThank you!

CuriosityRocks: Beautiful styles and very helpful

Sarah K: I have long (down to my butt) densely packed hair, so we'll see how this goes!

starmelody Elizabeth B: This was so much fun I like the low , Giselle buns and Juliet. Can either of these looks work for The Red Shoes? Also I have seen another hairstyle when Alicia Alonso RIP performed in the ballet Carmen where its in a low ponytail with Roses on one side can that too be an acceptional?

o ss: Yaaaaay new km vid and a relaxing one to watch w insight into ballet thank youA

jazmyn rose: Wow these are great hairstyles!

Kwami of Creation: All these styles look great, thanks a lot Katie… however Juliet… I don’t know. I absolutely can’t stand my hair sticking to my neck when I’m dancing. So this one is rather unpractical, or is it just me ✨

Cristina Cavalli: Kath can you please film a collection of your tiaras/ hair combs for performances and explain us the best places to buy them? Thanks ❤

Ayla Davis: I have all of my hair back after chemo! Until now, I only knew how to do the artistic swimming high bun. Time to play.

Alexandra: this is great, but now I need a tutorial on how to attach the hair pieces!

RitzyHornet6409: Thank you! I am a ballet ballerina, so thank you!

Elena Alejandra: Can hair be too long for a French twist? My hair goes down to my tailbone, so sometimes it pulls or feels a bit heavy, and French twists look so comfortable!

Micaela Ferreira: Thank you for your video, I will be using some of those hairstyles myself :) However, my daughter (the one that dances around here) has really thick and a lot of hair and she really struggles with her bun for classes. Even her teacher gave up on her. She loves her hair but I wonder if you could ask for someone from KM's friends to give some advice for the thick hair girls. She has wavy, 2b/2c hair, but a lot of it. And when I say she has a lot of hair, I mean a lot. I used to be the designated "ballet bun mom" who did everyone's bun before class and my daughter's ponytail was like 3 ou even 4 times thicker than any of her classmates.

Kitty Hurry up!: I remember as I first saw your hair video was years ago. How time flies Kathy ❤️

cquinnth: Lovely hair styles!

French Classes from LogicLanguageLearning: I know you have extensions but Your hairline and neckline look totally back to full health I’m so happy for you. My friend had a similar health issue. What worked for you in the end ? One of these hairstyles would be gorgeous with a wedding veil x

Alice Tawany: Lovely! Thank you!

Kara Amundson: Thank you...I have very thin, fine hair and, though I'm not a dancer, could use some relatively simple daily 'dos. I never thought about hairpieces before but this could be the answer for professional work. How do you care for them?

AwenoftheWoods: Love these. I kinda feel like some could be worn to the office, too.

Flimango: Can’t wait to watch it!

judy valencia: You look beautiful in any hair style.

Dorit Bergen: Very interesting, Kathryn, thanks.

Zsófia Strbka: I’m so excited for this!!!

I like Cheese: I wish we could wear the Juliet one in class omg

Leigha-Janae Armstrong: I love the look of a French twist but my natural hair says otherwise lol

Entertainment For All Network: Kathryn, you are so beautiful. You are an inspiration!! I love your videos. You should do some videos with Sean. you two were so funny!!

Violive: love these!!!!!

Meaghan Parent: Gorgeous!

elephante2002: These silhouettes are gorgeous

ClaryFlynn98: I love this!

Anna Townsend: High buns always look so weird on me. But I am looking for French twist tutorials for my performance

Nina-Ciara: Splendid!......Greetings from London from classical ballet eternal aficionado. ‍♀️

melisande balleste: I remember using hairnets for my hair bun during

Rottem G: love the franch twist!!!

Robin Sawyer: What are your tips for hiding bangs/fringe?

Rachel Hiestand: I have very long hair and just one of my braids is able to go all the way across my head for the Juliet hair style, should I only use one braid?

Samantha's crazy and dara: This is going to be so helpful I'm going to yagp competition this month

Fernanda Carvalho: That french twist is a gamechanger

S-Belle: I'm wondering if by now Katie bought her hairnets yet?

Carolyn Drone: Do you ever use a hair net when you do a bun?

Kandace Head: Do ballerinas necessarily have to have long hair, or can they go pixie-short?

ReaL*KEAS: Do ballerinas commonly have fewer hair volume due to stress?

Brenda Anne Du Faur: Couldn't get the fench twist despite trying numerous times. The presenation of doing it I couldn't understand and wasn't clear to me and was done too fast. I need to look for another video because I really want to do it.

En L’air School for Dance: THANK YOU!!

J C: So beautiful! Can you share your lipstick color?

gavi victoria: the juliet hairstyle is to die for

qooqy21: What kind of Bobby pins do you use?

Deanna Pietrorazio: Does anyone know what type of hair extensions they should buy for doing ballet buns? Like, what should I search for? I've never used them but want to try it!

Ευτυχία fan ❤️: Beautiful ❤️❤️❤️

Ester Fleurke: Pretty!!

waterwaysforyou: People"i put my hair up when im dancing" me" i leave my hair down all the time and if it gets in the way i chop it off the next day if i dont feel like putting a ponytail in my hair. (its named that because it looks like a horse tail.)"

nowhere inspace: You look so graceful

K K: When does Juliet dance with her hair down though..? I never watched that ballet but I also can’t recall seeing variations with her hair down. Even in Katie’s Juliet variation video it was all the way up.
