Historical Hair: Regency Up-Do

This is a much requested Regency style that will work for any length from shoulder to beyond. It is also best suited to curls, so my curly girls will be tickled and the rest of us have to do some prep work. :o) It's a lovely style that seems a lot more complicated than it actually is and is a good one for dinners out, fancy dress parties, or proms and what have you. Enjoy!

Hello, everyone. So today we are going to do the first of our two Regency styles um. This one is the more complex you really kind of need curls for this one. So all my perlier girls can rejoice because yay and the ones we're gon na have curly hair. This is how we're getting a curls. I went more for braids ways with curly ends, because that's the only part that has to be curled. So I'm going to take this down and be right back with you, oh and before we go there, that was weird um. This is going to be like my greatest hairstyle ever, not because it's the prettiest, I mean it's pretty, but it might not be the prettiest, but because this will work from shorter length all the way down. Oh, it's actually for more shorter hair, but I had to adapt it for my long hair, so yeah I'll, try and cover everything, ok right back and so we're back with all our curls um. Let me tell you what you need before we even go anywhere: okay, you're going to need at least four bobby pins hold our ribbon in. You need two piece of ribbon too huh, I'm not using regular ribbon because it tends to slide really badly on my hair. So, as you know, I started sewing so I got this trim, that's shiny on one side and felts on the other and the felt tends to say so. That'S what I'll be using this my ribbon today - and I know it doesn't quite mention - I don't care you'll. Also need some u-shaped pins now my shorter hair girls you'll just need bobby pins, because these are probably to be too long for what we're going to use them for, but the rest of y'all, u-shaped, pins and you're going to need some other type of clip. You can probably get away with some smaller job clips, but I'm using my half knitting needles because they make really sturdy your shaped pins all right here we go so no matter your length. It'S all going to start the same. You'Ll need to split the middle, which line should be fairly well split. Since I did mine when I braided last night, then we're going to go just behind our ear up and over separate that out from the rest of our hair on both sides, try and get it even we'll see how even light ends up there. We go all right, mmm seasoned enough. I think okay, just to get mine out of the way from now get mine out of the way, I'm just going to clip it with a barrette real, quick up under my chin, so I can mess with this. Alright, my shorter haired gals, all you're, going to need to do, is put in a pony right about here a little high, but that's it. You'Ll just need the pony now as long haired gals. Well, we have to get our hair into a shorter pony, so the technique we're going to use is JJ J's, pretzel bun. I know right that woman teaches me so many things so you're just going to pull back what you have that you didn't separate out with your left hand, you're going to wrap around like so underneath back up now, if your hair is longer than mine like, if You happen to be JJ, you may have to wrap twice and that's fine, but I only have to go once because you know I'm not quite there yet and then we're just going to pull it through little loop like so, and that's where our first set of Pins go now. If you would rather use jaw clips, they should be underneath our curls, so you can probably get away with it, but I'm going to use these little pins, my knitting needles, because they work good for me all right. So now that that's secured you have this left over and we can undo this mess under a chin as well all right. So this next part is actually fairly simple. You see, we have a mess of curls, but we want them pinned up. So what we're going to do is go section by section taking, I don't know about that, much and then twirl to get a little loop and then pen now you want them to be kind of loose. So you don't want to. You know like huge and and we're really really tight either, but that's just what we're going to do little loops and then you just pin it all over that pretzel bun. That'S these nice long pins because they'll tuck nicely and it's that little bun we've got under there. My shorter hair girls will just pin your curls down curls young with the straight up bobby pins because they don't need all this mess. Yet, even though a lot of y'all are over your hair out and you will eventually have to graduate to the big pits. Alright, I'm going to get this part done and then, when we watch the next step, see anything so here's where we should be. We should still have these nice and loose and looking kind of silly, and then you should have a nice curly ball. On the back of your head, tada neat huh. I always recommend having a little mirror, so you can like check and make sure that everything's covered looks uniform, alright. So now we're going to take our ribbon or you know, trim and we're going to put it on like a headband now in order to get it to stay. This is where we have our bobby pins X pattern no suckers on your ribbon, so it'll stay plug. Like so and the other side now, some of you gals may be able just to wrap it around and tie it and it will stay. Mine won't stay just slides right on back my head, so I decided to do it this way, but I also think what would work really well is just an actual headbands, which I don't have, which is kind of funny. Isn'T it I don't own a single headband. I think it's because they always hurt me behind my ear, so I just quit, buying them alrighty. So now your ribbon is in place now we're going to take what we have left here up front and we're going to hide that ribbon by going back underneath I'm going to come back over top, I don't rent one more time and then on this side, I'll Just do the twirl and pin it like. I pinned my other pearls. Look some and we'll do the right. So there you go, there is our Regency hairstyle with the curls turned out, really pretty didn't it. I like this one and it's fancy and of course you could do any kind of ribbon or heads beyond motif. To kind of you know make it match your outfit. It'S too bad. I didn't have turquoise to go with Mya lacy, pin, tucked nasty, um anyways. There'S your Regency hairstyle. I would like to give a thanks to mrs. Chan, see over at in timely fashion, because she has this tutorial over there in picture form granted her hair short or so. I had to figure out how to get this mess to stay. Well. So, thank you, Jay JJ long hair for you to see for your pretzel bun, which you know still amazes me that something so simple and comfortable can have so many uses. I mean it's under there, even if you can't see it. Okay, um anyways. That was your first region see the second one coming up is a braided style, so I don't think it's quite as pretty as this one. Okay, it's still period and that's what counts. Alright, I will see you all next time, bye,

Hannah M: this is actually so beautiful torrin! i can't wait until my hair grows out. i'm shoulder length, can't wait to get to waist!

Gil Michaud: What beautiful hair. I had a high school friend years ago with very long wavy hair and exactly the same color.

Aurorae: So pretty! Finally, something that works with my curls! The only problem I had was my length. It's lower-waist length, so just putting it in a pony gives me a LOT of hair to pin up. But if I do a pretzel bun, my leftover pony is too short to do very much with it...so I've kind of been doing a weird flippy bun thing to eat up some length. :)

Rebecca (eezepeeze): This is such a cute look and even though it's "period" you really could wear this to work or just running around.

bweeta: Wow, I'm so excited about this one! It looks so good on you, too! I loved your braid waves at the beginning, by the way!

finalboy: I have to say this: You look stunning with your hair wavy.

JDLHJDLH: Torrin, you're a genius =P You make all these styles seem so easy and do them so effortlessly, even tough I'm sure you work hard on them =D Thank's for another great turorial, I really liked it! Maybe it's a nice thing to try out myself on washing days, since I have these natural ringlets before I comb everything out =P Thank's for sharing!

Adeoturani: And now I know what it would be like if Mamrie Hart did hair instead of mixing drinks, and I am impressed with the results, haha. I love that you do old fashioned tutorials; I love them! And I love your hair! Whoa so much love! Good going, lady :)

Kristina P: That looks awesome, I'm so excited that I can try it on my bsl hair! I love your videos :)

Vorkbom: Great! It looks so good on you :D I will definetely try this one, having a historical party coming up (my clothing is late victorian, but hey fancy hair is fancy hair ;) )

Gabrielle Greiner: I've just completed this, minus the wrapping of the hair thing. My hair is way too short. lol. It was so easy and beautiful! Having curls naturally definitely took out a lot of steps.lol

Samantha Gordon: Holy cow, woman, you have a lot of hair!!! Lovely, by the way, always wanted long hair likw that. =) I'm doing a Regency themed birthday, and this is the closest to what I wanted, thanks so much!! (and the easiest to follow!!)

Fiona Akkerman: This is a beautiful and easy hairstyle. First time was a massive success and now I use it all the time, as my hair is perfect length and texture. Thank you so much for posting this tutorial, and your others. :)

Megan Still: This is Gorgeous!! Thanks SO much for sharing!!!!

Yakan Ume: This is great I can use this when I dress up for my presentation of the Regancy era!

icesk8er131: aww yay! a hairstyle for all of us! I have hair a few inches beyond shoulder length, but i'm starting to grow it out. I LOVE your hair. haha that braid part where you throw it back and it bounces back just kinda cracks me up.

max_dil: i love your personality! your so much more fun than the other tutorials out there!

torrinpaige: Yes, that is a chopstick! It's a giant one that came with my wok...and I've only ever used it for separating my hair. It's the best! Good luck with the curls, I know what a pain they can be.

chellierose: I love this one, thank you! I'm kind of thinking if accent-braids will look any good around the head, instead of the headband. What do you think? Any ideas where to take hair to start such a braid? I can't wait to try this one! :-)

Hunny Kidd: I love the knitting needle idea. How did you do it? I have got to get my hubby busy getting them done. I also love the ribbon idea. I can't wear headbands because of my glasses. My hair is nearly to my knees, so I really love this. It is a good look for church. My girls like it as well. Their hair is about my legnth.

YeSiKa Ziip: OMG!!! UR HAIR IS SO BEAUTIFUL!!!! AND SO LONG!! CONGRATULATIONS!! THUMBS UP!!

Kathryn Saks: i love it. its soo pretty. i may just try one day when my hair just dont want to work with what i want.

torrinpaige: @JudyWhat34 Soft Roller. That's what I curl up the ends with so I'll have curls instead of "spaghetti ends." You can find that technique in my video Working with Waves. :o) In that one I do multiple braids with curlers on each end, but usually when I merely do two braids, I split the end and do two curlers per braid. It just works out better for some reason.

Darcie Merriweather: Very nice. I have long hair and I love that bun

KateandBree: Yes, hairstyle for my shorter hair! Now, to figure out how to keep my hair curly long enough to do this hair style. <-stick straight, uncurlable fine hair. Were you using a chopstick to separate your hair? Another household tool that has 1000 uses--chopsticks.

Mallory S: Totally doing this for prom.

MissMookus: love it - thanks!

ReenBlom: Very nice video! You've got gorgeous hair!! And you've got charming manner! Made me smile. Thanks!

ReenBlom: Very nice video! You've got gorgeous hair!! And you've got charming manner! Made me smile. Thanks!

torrinpaige: Size depends on the hairstyle I'm attempting. I can use the 5 inchers, but I'll have to use both. If I'm doing a one stick bun, I need a long one -at least a 7 incher, but I more usually just use simple chopsticks which run from 7-8 inches on average. I have seen the Ketylo sticks, and their corkscrew shape is quite excellent for gripping finer hair. I don't have any simply because I prefer my sticks to be sparkly. LOL. Lots of my long haired compatriots swear by them.

Magosienne: I love it !

JudyWhat34: Great video! Btw, when your hair was in braids, it looked like the ends were taped or something, I'm assuming to make a curl at the end instead of just being straight. What type of tape was it, and do you have another vid where you show how to do that? Thanks!

baaasienkaaa: you made me I want long hair again!:]

scentedhoneysuckle: Wow Torrin, this updo is so cute!! Thank you for sharing it with us! Oh, and i need some support... i asked the hairdresser to cut 10cm (dunno in inches, sorry! italy here! :-D) anche she cut 25!!! My hair reached my bum and now it doesn't even reach the elbow...i'm so frustrated, and even more by all my friends telling me how better i look with shorter hair....i want my hair back! I know you can understand me... she erased 2 years of growth! I can't even use bun sticks now... :-( wanna cry

Noblebird02: love this as I too have terminally straight hair.

Sarandib22: Awesome hair style! Fling those braids! ;) lol

unicorntear303: @torrinpaige thanks for the tip, i will try that. my hair is to my waist. i was also thinking of maybe trying a sock bun, and then pining one strand twice, if that makes any sense. would that also work? i love your tutorials,

Bullock Smith: it looks good. great job.

MsHobgobblin: thank you so much torrin, now i know what to wear when my Brother will marry!!

torrinpaige: Check out my video on Working with Waves..that's how I get braid waves and curly ends. I'm using Aussie's Catch the Wave Flexihold mousse for the ends, but that's it. You've got everything else spot on. ;o)

SilentApprentice: One question, a few top layers you pin onto the top layer of hair above the pony tail, and then with each layer you pin it INTO the bun, like a pin cusion, is that right? And is getting those braid waves a sure thing? Because mine never came out as nice, did you use a product? And how do you curl the braided ends?

torrinpaige: Most drugstores and beauty supply places will have good pins. I get all of my stuff from Wal-Mart, Target, Sally's and CVS.

torrinpaige: First, never go to her again! Next, find someone you trust to give you trims from now on (my hubby does mine). Finally, take a deep breath and think of this as an opportunity to pamper your hair and envision how awesomely healthy it will be when it grows back. (Oh, and pay no attention to those friends. They're trying to make you feel better.) It will grow back, so for now, play with the shorter hairstyles while you can!

Ambere Erickson: beautiful

AshNight1214: Ooh! I love it! Not to say that you were heavy before, but have you lost weight? You look good! ^^

torrinpaige: I did say that my shorter haired girls should start with a ponytail - I have to do the bun to eat up all the length.

20rubberducks: If you need a ribbon headband that stays put in your hair and doesn't hurt your head, Momo Bands makes soft ribbon headbands with tons of colors and patterns. I actually work for them, but when you got to that step in the tutorial it made me think of that. I have lower-back length hair and they stay put and don't hurt my head/ears.

Irenna keisser: Your hair looks like Igraine's from the mist of avalon beautiful long red-blond hair.

torrinpaige: @unicorntear303 Hmm. Maybe a mini French twist with the top bit out, and then you can pin the curls over the twist? That might work. I don't know how long your hair currently is, but I know a French twist was do-able for me until almost waist length, and you should be able to leave enough out to pin your curls.

MonkiiGirl: can you put a link in the side bar for somewhere to get good pins?

torrinpaige: I don't think anyone will nitpick, although, I do have a Victorian 'do as well....lol. Let me know how it goes, oh, and if you take pics, I'd enjoy those as well.

andré rasemont: Bravo, tu est si belle que même le créateur peut être séduit. surtout ne va pas au coiffeur, ses ciseaux sont criminels. Tout tatouage laisse ça aux enfers et aux idiots....

ulov3m3ulov3m3not: If YouTube would have existed when I was growing up, I would have never cut my hair. I dont know what I was thinking that short hair was pretty. Now I just cannot get it to grow to the length I use to have it (like you).

unicorntear303: i really want to try this hair style especially that I am going to a wedding this summer, but my hair is to short do do it with the bun underneath, but t o long do do it whithous something similar, what would you suggest i do.

torrinpaige: @bessiecooper Mists of Avalon shout-out! Thank you, Miss Bessie!

Diamond McCall: Could you please share where I can find these u shaped knitting needles??

wolfylu: hey, i used to have that shirt :D

Mañanita Scott: That's a cute little country style...

Heather S: Do you have a video for the short haired girls? That is probably a stupid question, since your hair is extremely long!

Accountess: If you want to pay to much check out a health food store. If you want to pay just the right place try out an ethnic food store. Bonus points if the owner don't speak English fluently.

Alara .Jasmine: omg ypu look so young in this video

torrinpaige: No need to apologize. :o) I talk so much you're bound to miss something.

Nela Lipe: Hey!!! You look great! Did you loose some weith? Tell me your secret! ;) ... I really need a good tip..

Marilynn Nguyen: 0:38 tripped me out...
