Braided, Updo, Boho Hair Tutorial for long hair

*Giving is hold forever*

Harebrained has kindly invited me back today to do some um showcase, some bridal styles - that i think are going to be really big trends this year. I am definitely seeing boho not going away, and i'm absolutely here for it. I love boho styles. I just think they're really romantic and pretty and just easy breezy and i i love it, but i'm going to show you a boho style today and then i'm going to show you two other styles that i think are going to be really really trendy this year. So for my client here i for the sake of time, i've already kind of sectioned her off. But for my for my client in the chair, i would normally send her home after the trial, with some of my osis tame, wild and magic, and i like to cocktail these two for my for my boho brides. I really like natural texture um, so i asked that the client actually just come to the appointment with their natural texture cocktail, the tame, wild and the oasis magic together, run it through the hair and then just let it air dry. I think it's just perfect. The texture is fine, if the if they have slightly wavy hair, that's even better. I love that so for the sake of timing, i've already done all that and i've sectioned out a couple of sections in the front. You'Ll see i've already done a fishtail braid right here, and i start that these i have two braids right here and they start just beyond the hairline right up here, because we want this to be a little smoother. So two sections there and that's going to be for a braid and then directly under that and right in front i've already got these two sections that are going to be twisted back. I'Ve also also done the uh, the tendrils in the front for just some face. Framing so i like to section off all of my updos, it just keeps my hair or my head clear, cleaner and more focused, and then i have a good idea of where i'm starting - and i know my foundation is in the right place. So what i'm gon na do obviously i've already fish tail braided this one, but we're gon na start on the other side and i'll show you how to quickly do that so i've already taken my section of i've moved it out of the way. This is what i'm gon na braid. Now i like to use a little texture powder on my braids, because when i'm gon na fan this out afterwards, so it helps me to really fan it out and get a lot of volume right now, i'm using osis dust. It it's a really nice texture powder, that's nice and light, and i like to hold it just about six inches or so off of the base and then just gently tap all the way down the hair and then just kind of let it sink in. So we kind of shake it a little bit. Let it let the fibers kind of seek into that and then we'll start with our fishtail braid. So fishtail braid is basically two sections instead of three like a regular braid and i'm gon na take a small section from the outer corner of the right hand, side and bring it over to the left hand, side and then i'm gon na take a small section From the outer corner of the left and bring it over to the right - and i continue all the way down there - you don't want to hold your sections too tight, because you're not going to be able to fan everything out so just nice and loose and not Take too much on the outer corners, because then your braid is going to be too thick or too fine, so try and take the same amount of hair from outer corners each side, so we're working down the breed. Are we all looking really forward to to rides 2020 because there is a million of them and i'm talking about like not even friday and saturday weddings? It'S like tuesday, weddings thursday morning, tea parties there. It'S like crazy! The amount of crazy, different weddings that we're having so it's great that we can have styles for all these different occasions. So now we're coming towards the end where it's getting a little finer. I make my my sections just a little bit thicker so that they match the ones up on top and i don't want to go all the way down to the ends of the hair, because i'm going to fan this out. So it's going to pull some of this hair up, so i'm going to get a hair tie tie this off and if you don't feel like there's enough texture in the braid at this point you can just go in and and use your little dust it powder Again and just kind of sprinkle it on like fairy dust, and i like to kind of tap it with my finger to make sure that all of that residue is gone and then just like. As almost like a sweeping motion with your fingers. You'Re, just gon na pull on the bottom on the edges of each rotation of the braid and then pull that out until you get to like the fan. Thickness that you want and don't be. Don'T be afraid that, like you've pulled some parts out too much and some too little because it's not supposed to look perfect, this boho braid is supposed to look like you almost kind of the client almost did it themselves and it's not it's not perfect. That'S why i love these these styles because they're, just so they're simple and they look like just easy breezy now i can see from here that this braid is going to go towards the back of the head and that's another point when i'm braiding i'm mindful of The direction the braid is going to go to so i stand behind exactly where the braid is going to go, and i braid in that direction. If i was braiding in the front - and i move it that way - you're going to get this weird lump so always braid in the direction that you're going all right, so i'm going to fan out the other one in the same way. I'Ve already done this. Obviously so we're just going to add a little more dusted powder sprinkle it like fairy dust, as i like to say, and then just kind of shake it and tap with lightly with your finger. So all that residue is gone and then again i'm just easily pulling out on the sides of the sections. That'S why i really love this product. It just kind of makes it so easy and gives you some volume in it. So, even for someone who has fine hair, like me, i have like four hairs fanning out a braid just makes it look like there's so much more and this product just helps you do it so so much easier all right. So these i'm just going to kind of leave to the side and we're going to start working on our back section, which i feel in updos is basically your money piece. It'S your foundational piece, so once that's in set in stone, then your you can kind of gravitate everything towards that. So i like to take an even section on both sides, just at the occipital bone right here, because that's kind of like where you need that volume and then i just kind of smooth it out with my fingers again, i i'm not looking for it to be Super super smooth. I really want some texture in it, so i don't mind if it's a little bit lumpy and then i tie it off with a rubber band and then we do like a a topsy tail. So i do a lot of this and it just makes especially for someone who hasn't got an awful lot of hair. It just gives you the idea that there is a lot more hair because you're able to texturize it and pull it all apart. So i'm going to go into the middle with my two fingers and take the the ends of the hair here and drag it and bring it under. So you have this really nice pretty topsy tail and then i just kind of tighten it a little bit. Then i'm going to use my dust, it again hold it out like this and i'm just kind of sprinkling a little bit on. So it gives me a little a little texture, a little volume tap it in there. We go now with your finger and thumb you just kind of want to pull a couple of little pieces from the top section. You don't want to go all the way inside. You just want to go right on the top and then start pulling until you see like the volume and texture that you want. This is why having finer hair with this style is perfect, because you can really make it look like there's a lot more hair in there. Okay, so there we go, we have basically our foundation. So after that i'm actually now. This depends on whether you have finer or thicker hair. You can do as many sections as you want. She has pretty thick hair, so i'm going to do a couple of sections, we're going to take one from either side and break and bring it over into a ponytail directly. Underneath this topsy tail we'll tie this off and do basically the same thing. I love these clear rubber bands. They just make it so easy. So again, my two fingers right here - i'm gon na topsy tail. It underneath pull to tighten it and then we're just gon na see where it needs a little bit of volume. Let'S see right here, we could pull some out and then tighten it as you go so that you, don't you, don't see the rubber bands at all, so we're going to do another one right here, because there's a lot of hair, but if she didn't have a Lot of hair, then just one would do, and you could just kind of do something with this, but we're going to go on either side again trying to take even amounts so that both sides look, look. You know balanced. If you need to comb it a little bit just to kind of tame, some of that hair, just comb it out a little bit and then tie this off and we do another topsy tail. So really it doesn't take an awful lot of prep beforehand. With this, this is why i love these types of styles. I don't have to do a full head of curls beforehand. I mean, if you have someone who's very straight hair, then maybe you want to do that and my favorite product well one of my favorite products. I can't say a favorite product because there's just so many good ones for different reasons, but i really like to use um fab foam for a nice like just kind of body in the blow dry, all right. So now we could. If we wanted to separate that and go down again and if you wanted to leave that into a ponytail, we would just keep doing topsy tails and then separating each one and going back down like that and it's almost like a bubble braid. But this, i think we're gon na do separate it into two sections and i'm just gon na do a quick rope braid. So it's basically two sections you're just twisting and putting one section over the other and then we'll tie that off towards the end. Not too far down because you're going to pull that out as well. This i actually like to use a little bit of texture craft hairspray. I love this product. It just gives just enough give without pulling anything out and just lots and lots of texture. So i'm gon na do the same kind of thing as i've done with the braids. Just wherever in the section you see need some fullness you're, just gon na kind of pull from there making sure that you're holding on to the to the base of it. So you don't pull everything out and if you do, who cares you go back and you do it again? It takes two minutes. That'S why i love these styles too. Is they just really don't take a long time i mean when i was coming up in the industry used to do a full head of you know, three-quarter inch bubble, um or curls and then go and do it and up style with a million bobby pins, and It was crazy, i forgot to let you know about the bottom, so let's just show this again with the ends in order to keep these frizzy ends out, tie it off and just when you're done, i like to loop the ends in and not all the way Into the into the ponytail, so then it just got a smoother loop and i can hook a bobby pin onto that. So then we're just really going to see where it wants to live. I'D like the hair to tell me where it wants to go. No, maybe that way there we go that looks good, so just kind of play around with it a little bit and figure out where exactly it wants to lay, because that's the whole idea behind a boho style is that it looks. It looks so effortless. So that's what we'll do and they're just going to use some bobby pins. I don't like to open them. I keep them straight like this and then directly push them all the way into where the base of the the bun is so i know i have a good foundation there we go and i'm seeing that little ends, so we're going to tuck that in this is Where i might open it, because i'm going to hook these ends in and then just push it right in through there. So now we have basically our foundation and we can start by pulling that apart a little bit. So this is where i'm going to go in with my dusted again only this time i actually just kind of push it put it on my fingers. Just on my fingertips - and i rub that in because then the texture is exactly where i want it and it doesn't fall all over the the bun and i i can figure out where the texture needs to be. So i'm really just kind of fanning things out here, seeing where i need more texture and more fullness. Okay, i think that's pretty good, obviously, will take a little longer time on a real client, but she doesn't mind because she's not really living all right. So we're then we're going to go to well, i like to do the braids last, so we'll just kind of get those out of the way a little bit and we'll work on this side piece right here, so i've already curled this you, i usually curl with A one inch curling iron and i don't even care if it's like crazy, you know all in in uniform. I just need it for the texture. So again, i'm gon na do a little bit of dust. It shake it out a little bit, pat it in and then i'm separating this into two. You can do this many different ways you can. You can separate into four or five pieces and then twist it and turn it back, but just i don't know. I think this is pretty i'm just gon na overlap, one over the other one over the other one over the other and then holding the base. I'M just gon na see where i need it to fall a little bit, i'm gon na add some like kind of swoopy pieces down there, and maybe another swoopy piece right here and then, as i work around, i'm just gon na overlap one. So it's basically like a rope braid at this point then, and then i'm just gon na pull on pieces to give some more texture and then i'm gon na actually tie that off. I'M all for making everything much easier with with the tools that i can use. So i use this an awful lot. This is like a dollar from the dollar store or your local um beauty, supply and i'll i'll put it in there. Now, where exactly the point comes out, that's where the hair is going to end up. So i want some tendrils just kind of hanging out here. So i'm going to put this in through here and then pull through and then there's a pretty little tendril just hanging right there. We can fix the the where it's laying in a little bit so now we're going to do that same thing. On the other side, let me move around flip the braids back over, get them out of your way and we'll do the same thing on this side, leaving the tendrils out in the front. You can obviously leave some down here if you wanted to as well. That'S up to you and i also like to do it at different thicknesses on both sides. This is her heavier side. So that's a lot i feel like that's. You need more hair there, but you know it's a little. I i like it when it's just not so perfect and exactly the same on both sides. So i'm going to do the same thing, overlap, overlap, overlap and then i'm just going to pull on that a little bit. Well, let's do a little bit of dusted again. Okay, tap tap tap way over and then we just pull down for those little swoopy pieces. I'M going to tie it off again, so you can see that this is giving it a lot of texture and it doesn't look super perfect. So i'm just kind of pulling on these pieces and then i'm going to use my topsy tail and pull that through and pull it all the way through the bottom. And then i can just figure out where exactly i need a little bit more fullness, which is perfect, and this is where your creativity comes in, because you just depending on how textured and how full you want it, you can. You can go crazy, but see already. It'S it's looking like a really pretty boho bride right then, just for added interest. Now we're gon na we're gon na bring those braids in and topsy tail those too. If i can get this closed. Okay, i like how it's looking right about there. So i'm going to topsy tail that all the way through maybe i'll, just bring it out a little bit just enough to hide the rubber band and you can pull the rubber band down a little bit more if you need to now. If you wanted to secure that a little bit more in place, you can just add a pin, a bobby pin just right through again, not not opening it. I'M just pulling it right through here and then securing it in place. So it's nice and sturdy in there. I'M going to do the same on the other side and bring that through there and there we have it really pretty boho braided bun updo for a bride, and this is one of the most kind of requested bridal styles. This year it has been for a couple years, but it's not going anywhere and i'm loving it. So that's my bride, that's the boho bride, but i'm starting to see a little change in in because we're having such different events on different times, we're starting to see people have a little bit more fun because they're not taking the wedding so seriously. You know so this i thought would be a little bit more fun. I'M definitely seeing a lot more ponytails for bryant's um big thing is bubble ponytails. You definitely need an awful lot of hair in her ponytail. For that, and as you can see, she doesn't have an awful lot of hair in her ponytail. So i basically used a little bit of tame wild smoothed it on the hair, brought it all the way up to a high ponytail and left two pieces on the side out and from this i'm just going to do a rope. Braid again, i'm going to use a little bit of dust it and it you know you can add. If your client doesn't have any texture to their hair, you can add a curl, but you really don't need to. I like to separate it in two. I'M gon na twist one over the other, so do a nice rope braid and i go almost all the way to the end. And then i tie that off this you don't need to pull out so much, but just to add a little bit of texture. Just pull out a little bit and then i'm actually going to wrap it all the way around. Let'S see all the way around to the base of the ponytail so just see where it wants to sit, you don't want it to go all the way up here. It looks a little bit off base so just where it where it sits right. There looks comfortable to me so i'm gon na just pin that right in place there we go, don't see the bobby, pin and then wrap this all the way around keep wrapping. It then we get to just where the ends are. I'M going to use my topsy tail put the ends through there and pull out the other side. I'Ve already obviously curled her ponytail. So you know that's, basically the only curling i've actually done on this client. So this is really pretty quick, quick style, but if you have a client who still wants a really nice ponytail but doesn't have an awful lot of hair, this is where, like extensions, come in really well and that's an extra you know service, you can do before The actual day of the of the wedding, but this these ponytails look really great with a lot of volume and a lot of length, so i'm basically doing the rope braid again and then i'm going to tie it off. Like i said you don't have to go all the way down because you're hiding a lot of those ends out there. I forgot to use my dust it, but we can do it while it's still in here here we go and i'm just going to pull on it a little bit just to add a little bit of texture and then we're going to wrap this around the other Side - let's see i kind of like where that's going right there so get a pin and just pin that right in place, so it doesn't move anywhere. Then we wrap it around the ponytail again and use our topsy tail, clip that in there and pull out the other side. So then you've got really nice base on your ponytail and it just looks nice and full. So then, with this bottom part you, if you had a lot of a lot of hair, you could really do a really cute bubble pony, and i kind of like to i've already used some dust it on here, but i kind of would go in with just A brush and backcomb it just slightly to give it a little bit more fullness and then tie it off, and then you would just simply pull out until it's more circular in all the areas, and then you work your way down all there. Now, obviously, she doesn't have an awful lot of hair, so i can't get a really nice bubble on that, so i'm not going to do that, but just an easy way to show you how to do that today, we're going to do the same idea with this. I'M going to do the topsy tail ponytails, but within a ponytail we'll do it all the way down until we basically run out of hair, i'm going to topsy topsy tail it upside down, pull it through and then give it lots of volume right in there. Then take more pieces from either side of the ponytail try and make them even as possible, because you want the same thickness on both sides. Tie this off and then flip that upside down, pull it a little tighter, pull little pieces out, and then we continue going all the way down the ponytail, so not an awful lot of prep. You have to do it's mainly in in the texture. So, like that's, why i'm loving all of our texture products right now? They just do exactly what i need and i don't have to do a whole bunch of curling and you know smoothing or any of that, because you really just you - want lots and lots of texture. We'Ve run out of hair at the back of the ponytail. So we continue on now. This is really cute as just a ponytail itself and leaving it hanging. Then you see where it gets much thinner on there. When you have finer hair pulling the all this out is so much easier when you have one of these texturizing products to make it look like it's so much more hair right and then you continue. Basically, this is almost like doing a a pull through braid flip. It upside down and then pull out for texture. Now i could go all the way down the length there. If i had a lot of hair, we could just do that, which again is perfect. For someone who have has some extensions, ponytail extensions, it would be beautiful to have a really long ponytail. But since this is really kind of fine on the ends, i'm going to just kind of wrap it up and then i'll tuck it under here and then pin that in place. This is where i actually open my my my bobby pins, because i want to slide it in on the on the back side, and now i can really start pulling it out. I would ask my client to kindly bend her head down and then just use again fairy dust, the dusted on here now. The reason why i do this is because well she has blonde hair. You can't even really see it, but if she has dark hair you're going to see some of that residue, so i like to tap it, so it really sinks into the fibers. And then we can just pull all those pieces apart and that's more of like a fun bridal updo right, a little higher, really cute. If you wanted to, you could leave it all the way down as a ponytail. But if you don't have the length - and you your ponytail only goes to here, then you can just attach it here and separate all of this and then pin these in place so that they stay tighter to the head. So hopefully you like that now for my last one i definitely am seeing a lot more parts in people's hair. You know that's been a big thing, so a definite part we're going like the opposite way. It'S basically full on like old hollywood glamour. So what i did with my client here is: i basically used a one inch curling iron, i um. First of all, i blow dried here with osis grip. That gives me really nice volume. It'S a really nice mousse. I blow dried with a a curling brush and then i used a one inch curling iron to just do some curls and combed all the way through. So, in order to get a little bit more volume, though i like to separate it and just take it in you know: it's not perfect sections, but this is where this is good, too, a little dusted, so you get tap and then use either a teasing comb Or a brush and just kind of make it a little fuller right in there, so it just widens the whole look all together. Just take that you don't have to take tiny sections, i'd like to take bigger sections so that the curl stays in place a little more shake that tap it and see how much bigger i can get this wider. I can get this set to be because that's what this does it just gives it a lot of volume. Now, if you wanted someone who wants more of like a a bridget bardot, look, you could really tease them off a lot right up on the top section here, adding a lot of the the texture powder and then tease really a lot and smooth over the top. But right now i'm going for more of just kind of a glam wave, but this this client she's she's glam. She doesn't know whether she wants to be full-on hollywood glamour or she wants to be more fun, so we're gon na give her a little bit of a fun thing at the end, all right, a little backcombing smooth it out a little bit and you can continue On that way, and then smooth it when you come to the very back, so you've just got nice beautiful kind of waves. It'S understated, but a trick for me that i like this client, wants to have a definite part and her sides going back. So it's really nice and sleek. I'Ve used a flat iron on there. I used a little bit of osis magic to smooth everything down. So i like to take up all the rest of this hair and pin it out of out of the way and just when i've. I know where exactly where i want it to be smoothed out i'll hold it exactly where i want it and then use one of these clips to hold that in place and we'll do the same thing on the other side. So you get really nice. I'Ve always had an issue with clients saying that this ends up getting really not tight enough and it kind of gets a little loose. So what i like to do is now that i've had those in place where exactly i want it. I bring it back here. Nice and tight and i'll tie this off with a rubber band, so it stays really nice and tight back here and then the part doesn't go anywhere and it doesn't lose its shape. Let this go down and we'll take this out nice and easily. Ah, i just got it caught, be careful not to catch it in the rest of the hair. Oh my clip just really caught in here. There we go. Let'S see now. Obviously i have a little slip there. So i'm gon na pull that in place and use a bobby pin to pin that in place right in the back of the ear there we go so now. She'S really got a nice kind of hollywood glam wave, but that beautiful, smooth side parting, so she's just kind of more glamorous a little bit more understated, but maybe for that's for the ceremony, but maybe for the party. I'M gon na do something fun, so i've just actually. I don't know if you've heard about this product, but it's called color alchemy by schwarzkopf and it's a temporary cool color for someone who has darker hair this one i'm using is scarab. I used a little drop of it, put it on my brush. This is so cool. You guys it's amazing, and especially for those people who have darker hair and just want a little bit more interest, i'm really just gon na kind of sweep it on the hair. So i'm really not disturbing the updo at all, i'm just going to sweep it on there a little bit more sweep it on the other side, give it a minute to just settle in, and then we always see this use, it's heat activated, so it's actually works With the heat of your head or out in the sun, so it looks great at an outdoor wedding and it's a little bit more fun, and you know for that. Someone who wants just something extra right use a little bit of heat and you'll, see the color. Actually change so she's got kind of a little bit of a nice color going on and then once she's out in the sun. The heat from the sun and the heat from her head will make it all kind of change. Colors. You know it's kind of difficult to see right here. Let'S see see that and then it's just just a little bit more fun right. She'S got some cool, purples and greens and blues going on in there. So that's more for her party. This style was nice. Just for her her her wedding ceremony and then the party she wants just a little bit more special, so we got a little little color action going on there.
