There has never been a better time to purchase a synthetic wig. The technology behind wigs for women have made huge steps forward from the wigs of the past.

Thinking of buying a wig to cover hair loss or simply change your hairstyle?

This includes innovations in the strands of hair, the types of caps available, and the range of styles. Here is what you need to know when buying a synthetic wig.

Weight of a Wig

Weight can be an important factor in wigs. While it is important to have enough volume of hair to look thick and healthy, a heavy wig can become uncomfortable to wear longer term. Modern synthetic wigs are typically lighter than human hair wigs which can be a huge advantage for all day wear. For women with sensitive scalps, the weight of the wig and the type of cap design can be particularly important.

Look for : When shopping online, sites should list the weight of the wig. The lightest isn’t necessarily the best but a greater weight than comparable length wigs is a red flag.

Wig Styling

One of the most challenging elements of wig construction is the hairline surrounding the face. If you’ve ever worn a cheap wig with a costume, you probably noticed that the fact that it was a wig was obvious from the front. That is because it can be difficult to arrange strands of hair so that they fall around the face in a way that looks natural. Styles with a part in the hair or layers around the face can also expose the wig’s cap.

Fortunately, today’s quality wig manufacturers have resolved the problems related to the hair’s styling. Hand tying strands of hair near the hairline can help ensure a natural-looking hairline. Monofilament and lace fronts can provide a natural look whist keeping the wig’s underlying structure hidden from view.

Look for : Hair that flows around the face. Pay particular attention to the wig structure and if the style includes a part or very short hair. Look for hair parts that look natural. Lace fronts and hand tying can help provide wigs with a great look.

Wig Colour

A head of natural human hair is rarely a single colour. There will typically be strains of hair of varying shades. Slightly darker hair at the roots is natural, particularly for blonde hair, and can be very flattering. Modern hairstyles often include even more colour variation with highlights and lowlights. It is easier and cheaper for manufacturers to create wigs with the hair all dyed the same colour. Higher-quality wigs will have the richer range of colours to provide an attractive, natural-looking head of hair.

Look for : Wigs with depth of colour. Check for hair strands that include a range colours rather than looking flatly monochromatic. Depending on the style of hair you prefer, look for highlights, lowlights, and darker shading at the roots. Some styles of wigs are also available with umbrae or other trending hair colour options.
