If you’re bored of your look and want a quick change, purchasing a wig can be a great option. Instantly altering the way your complexion appears and giving you a unique look, a new hair colour can be a great way to change your look.

However, it’s essential you ensure your wig is suitable for dyeing before you break out the bottle. Take a look at our guide to find out more.

Human hair or synthetic hair?

Before you even think about dyeing your wig, you need to check to see if it’s made from synthetic or human hair. If it’s natural human hair, bear in mind that it will have already been through alot of processing to achieve the original colour. It is possible to dye a wig made of human hair but we’d always recommend going to a professional hairdresser for this.

If it’s made from synthetic hair, ordinary dyes won’t work and you could damage the product by trying to put it through a dyeing process.

The colour of any good quality synthetic wigs cannot be altered, the synthetic fibre is not dyeable. If you fancy a change of colour we would recommend  investing in a new synthetic wig in a flattering shade.

Choosing a dye

If you have a human hair wig and want to change its colour, you might think that surely you can use the same kind of dye you’d use on your natural hair. Whilst it’s tempting as these dyes can be easily purchased online and on the High Street, pop into a salon to speak to a professional as buying the wrong kind of dye or  a cheap dye may dry out your wig and also end up with colour disasters. Instead, opt for a reputable salon where it can be carried out by professionals.

Choosing a shade

Going just a few tones lighter or darker will refresh your look without dramatically altering your appearance. This is a great option if you want your hairstyle to look bold yet natural.
