Wigs can be a fantastic way to transform your look, boost your self-confidence and achieve the hairstyle you’ve always wanted. As @Allure_magazine says, “Whether you’re a naturalista who wants to switch it up without putting stress on your strands, or you’re simply looking for a change without the commitment, wigs are an incredibly versatile and convenient option to consider.”

When choosing a wig, you have an almost endless choice of styles and colours. So, should you select a wig that closely matches your natural shade or opt for something completely different?

Your natural hair colour

If you haven’t dyed your hair much over the years, you’re probably more inclined to choose a wig that closely matches your natural colour. This can be a great option if you want your wig to be fairly inconspicuous and to reclaim your former look.

In general, a person’s natural hair colour will complement their skin tone. People with darker hair will often have darker skin while blondes and redheads will have lighter complexions. This means that choosing a wig that’s more or less the same colour as your natural hair will automatically ensure it complements your skin and gives you a fantastic overall appearance.

Choosing something different

While a lot of people will find that wigs matching their natural hair colour are the most flattering option, this isn’t always the case. For some people, dramatically altering the colour of their hair can give their skin a whole new look.

If you regularly use tanning products to change your skin tone, or if you spend a lot of time in the sun, you may find that choosing a wig in a different shade is the best option for your look.

This is also true if your skin has changed colour because of illness or blemishes. If you have redness in your skin, or if your face is paler than usual, you may well find that changing your hair colour is the best way to improve your appearance.

If you’re not sure whether you have a cool, red, warm, or olive complexion, talk to a specialist to find out which hair tones will best suit you.

A dramatic new look

If you’re looking to really change up your appearance, choosing a wig in a completely different shade from your natural colour is a great way to do it. There is a huge choice of wigs available on the market, allowing you to change your hair colour to almost any shade under the sun.

From blue, pink, red, and grey to yellow, purple and black, you can choose a wig in any colour you like. While many of these shades won’t give you a ‘natural’ appearance, they will give you a stand-out look and ensure you never fade into the background.
