Yes, this time we are looking at that dreaded question. It’s an issue that is brought up time and time again, like it’s something shameful. Look at Ivanka Trump in the US. Everyone the other side of the Atlantic has been bombarding her on Twitter asking her if she’s wearing a wig.

Many of the wig wearers we see in our store and speak to over the telephone comment on the fact that they do occasionally get asked if they are wearing a wig.

For some wig wearers, they do not mind the spotlight being thrown on to them and are happy to respond in the affirmative. However, others wish that the ground would swallow them up.

Some people just ignore the question and pretend that they didn’t hear. Once the question has been asked though, what do you do? How would you respond? Wigs4U is here to save the day! Let us talk you through the options.

Getting personal

The question, “Are you wearing a wig?” seems to come out of people’s mouths much more easily than say, “Are you wearing control underwear?” or “Are you wearing a push-up bra?”.

People don’t ask those personal questions because they are too intimate and yet people are happy to directly ask if you are wearing a wig.

Appropriate answers

We all worry a lot about the way that we look. So, when you start wearing a wig (particularly a natural one that resembles your hair) you may begin to worry about the look of your wig too. That’s why it’s important to have an answer up your sleeve in case you ever get asked the question.

Out and proud

Our option is to simply change the topic. Distract the person by asking them something about them. Find something about them to compliment them on and ask them about it.

For example, ‘I love your jumper! Gosh! It’s such soft wool. Where did you get it?’ Make sure that you leave them no room to repeat the question. They will either forget what they asked you, or they will soon realise that they just forgot their manners.

Alternatively, you could say ‘Yes! It’s my hair.’ Because you are wearing your wig to be just that, your hair.

Or, our favourite option is to embrace the change happening to you and to proudly say that you are wearing a wig.

There is no reason to be ashamed or embarrassed about wearing a wig, particularly if you are losing your hair due to an illness. It’s okay to be proud of wearing a wig. They give you so much freedom to experiment with your look and to be creative.

Be brave and bold with the new looks that wig-wearing can open up for you. Unless you do something completely fabulous like buying a bright blue wig, a lot of people won’t even know that you are wearing a wig.
