What is a wig?

A wig (short for periwig) is a covering that covers the entirety of your head. The base of a wig, also called the wig cap, is made to mimic the shape of the head. You can get wigs with a lace front to the wig cap which makes the hairline around the forehead look more natural as each strand of hair is tied on to the lace fabric. It also helps the wearer to feel a little cooler by allowing more air to reach the scalp.

Wigs are worn for fashion reasons today as well as to cover any hair loss. More and more people, including celebrities, are turning to wigs to experiment with their look without risking damaging their real hair.

Take a look at these top ten famous people who, you will be surprised to learn, wear wigs. The brilliant thing about wigs is that they cause no damage to the hair underneath.

What is a weave?

A weave is a process through which hair is sewn or glued on to your natural hair by tightly braiding your natural hair and then the extension weft is sewn into the braid.

Due to the chemicals that are used in creating a weave, it can actually damage your natural hair and as such should be used with caution and checked regularly by a hair-care professional.

Weaves also have a shorter lifespan than wigs and they usually look good for approximately three to four weeks. However, wigs can last for years if maintained properly.

As with wigs, you must look after your weave correctly by using the right products and wash it in line with the advice your stylist has given you. Weaves also provide the same amount of creativity and freedom as wigs as they come in a huge variety of colours and textures.

Although, due to the time it takes to have a weave fitted and the harmful chemicals used in attaching a weave, it is not something that you can easily or quickly change, unlike a wig.

The most important aspect of any hair replacement system is that it fits in with your lifestyle, whether a wig is better for you or a weave depends entirely on your unique situation. If you want to talk through this decision with us, call Wigs4U on 01945 587584 to find out how we can help you.
