Your hair thinning is a natural stage that happens to many women as they grow older. This is due to the decline in the amount of oestrogen that the female body produces as women mature.

In addition to hair loss, as the amount of oestrogen the female body produces declines, your hair follicles also change as you age. They become smaller and smaller until they are so fine that they are difficult to see.

In addition to these natural effects of the ageing process, ill-health and some medical treatments can result in significant hair loss for people of both sexes.

The result of thinning hair on your self-confidence can be considerable, so it is wrong to dismiss any concerns about your appearance that you may be having as vanity.

It is natural to be concerned about looking your best no matter what your age is, if that is something that has always mattered to you and women are taught from a very young age that having thick, long, luscious locks is the utmost symbol of beauty and their value is often mistakenly reduced to their looks.

When your hair starts to thin, there are a few options that you can look to in order to resolve the issue and wigs and hair extensions are some of the choices available to you. This time we look at whether wigs or hair extensions are better for thinning hair.

Wigs for Thinning Hair

The advantage of wigs for helping you to disguise thinning hair is that they can blend in the appearance of your natural hairline, especially if you have your hairdresser shape your wig or adjust the shade to suit your natural skin tone and hair.

However, they do cover the entirety of your head rather than targeting one specific area. The disadvantage of a wig is probably the maintenance that you need to put into it, to keep it looking it’s best particularly if you plan on wearing it every day.

They are a particularly good option if you are thinning significantly or if you are thinning in several patches on your head.

Extensions for Thinning Hair

Hair extensions are wonderful for allowing you to target several specific areas where you are thinning and allow you to integrate the hair pieces into your natural hair to create a natural look.

The disadvantage is that because they are individual sections, it might take some time in the morning to apply all of the pieces you need properly, whereas a wig can be placed on your head quite quickly – requiring little adjustment.

Like a wig, you also need to maintain your hair extensions properly although the maintenance in looking after hair extensions is less intensive than the maintenance involved in looking after a wig.

If you wish to maintain your hair extensions properly, you need to wash them with a sulfate-free shampoo and treat them with care – no pulling or tugging. They are a useful stepping stone towards buying a wig if wearing a wig feels like too big of a step for you at that moment.
