Wigs can seem expensive, but will a second-hand wig end up costing you more in the long run?

There are different types of wigs including synthetic wigs and human hair wigs. Your lifestyle will dictate what type of wig will suit you better.

If you’re going to be wearing the wig every day, then human-hair wigs tend to last longer. You’ll pay a bit more, but there’s a wide range of prices that should suit all budgets, and you can’t beat the feel of real human hair. You might be tempted to buy a second-hand wig because of the price. Or maybe you saw one that caught your eye because of the style or colour.

Before you make a purchase, make sure you know about the possible problems with buying second-hand.

Head Lice

Imagine finding that your second-hand wig has given you lice. Lice can lay eggs that you may not see. Lice can be transferred to your hair and leave you with a very itchy problem.

Not only will you feel embarrassed about getting lice, but it can take a few weeks to get rid of them. In the meantime, you are left with an itching scalp, neck, and ears.

Some states in America have made it illegal to sell used wigs due to health and safety, but that is unfortunately not the case in the UK.

Condition of the wig

Wigs have to be taken care of to make sure they last longer and are kept in good condition. If the previous owner hasn’t done this then it means you won’t get a lot of wear out of it.

Human hair wigs can be damaged by heat from hair straighteners and other styling equipment so by buying from second-hand sellers, you can’t be sure of what you are buying.

What it looks like

It’s important that your wig looks natural and suits you. When you buy a new wig, you can get expert advice from the seller to make sure you get the right wig for you.

You can cut your wig to flatter you if it’s human hair. If someone has already done this to a wig, then it won’t necessarily suit you and you can’t wait for it to grow like you can with natural hair.

Beware of scammers

There are fraudulent companies and people out there who have sadly taken advantage of customers buying wigs. Recently, @Poshmarkapp reported occasions where this has happened and warned, “PLEASE don’t buy used wigs.” It’s important to go to a reputable company, so if the wig doesn’t suit, or if there is an issue with it, then you can return it.

It may seem like you are saving money by buying a second-hand wig but in the long-term, it can cost you more both financially and, possibly, health-wise.

There are a variety of prices for wigs, so there’s an option for most budgets. Purchasing from a reputable company ensures you get a good quality product that makes you look great and feel confident.
