Erykah Badu, Solange and Ledisi Cover Essence’s ‘Natural Beauty’ Issue

There are a few people at Essence magazine who will be working overtime this month because not only will they have one cover which we are all used to, but in May they plan to have three! Essence magazine is celebrating individual expression and natural beauty in the month of May and as such they have chosen three women who they consider pioneers of those ideas.

The newest face of the Givenchy brand Erykah Badu will make her debut on one cover and singers Solange and Ledisi will grace the covers of the other two. Essence was able to share a snippet of what each woman had to say in the new issues, starting with songstress Ledisi:

Although I’m known for my long, colorful locs, I still don’t take my hair too seriously, I experiment a lot, dyeing it and constantly switching styles to grab attention. My hair is one of my best accessories and changing it helps express who I am.

Solange was no different, she has always expressed that she does not want to be defined by any one thing, and her statement said just that.

We all have the option of how we want to express ourselves through our life, hair, style or whatever we decide. We shouldn’t be pigeonholed into any one category.

And of course Erykah has always been a ball of artistic expression, not caring what anyone thought of how far she took that expression, remember Window Seat? Here is what she had to say:

I view my hair and clothes as functional art, I’m my own stylist and I love it, but I am not trying to make a statement.

This issue should be pretty interesting, Essence doesn’t typically disappoint anyway and we are used to quality work from them so it should make for a great read and a real chin scratcher deciding on which version of the magazine to buy!
