News Anchor Women Wearing Natural Hair Is Considered Historic?

I was reading the forums, as usual, and came across the above picture of an anchor woman who wears her natural hair while at work. The post was described as historic. Natural hair on the news always seems to make the ‘news’ because we typically do not see anchor women sporting natural hair. The only problem is I don’t see it as historic.

I get it though: we do feel it’s ‘a thing’ to have our natural hair sported on television because years ago it wasn’t very popular, but these days we see natural hair in commercials, in movies, on magazine covers, and pretty much everywhere, so it isn’t a stretch to see it on the nightly or day time news.

In a perfect world, having your natural hair while hosting a daytime news show or a night time one shouldn’t be a problem since your hair is literally growing out of your head like your other co-anchors. It shouldn’t be something that is ‘normalized’. But nothing is perfect, right?

Even though I do not see it as historic, I do see it as trendy. We saw the likes of Tamron Hall rocking hers the other day, and of course that was a big deal because it was the Today Show, and it was her first time. Was it historic? Eh not really, but it was interesting and blog post worthy.

Historic or not, I like the fact that natural hair is making its way to the nightly news without a ton of resistance. On the forums the women support the idea whole heartedly, acknowledging that it is good to see that women can wear their own hair if they choose to everywhere on mainstream television.

Let us know what your thoughts are. Do you view the fact that anchor women are wearing their natural hair on the news more often as historic? Or do you just see it as a trend that is here to stay?
