8 Questions About Keratin Treatments - Answered

Recently I went to my local hairstylist and we got on the topic of Keratin Treatments. I had always heard about them, but never really knew exactly what they were, or how they differed from relaxers.

A Keratin treatment is actually a hair straightening treatment that can really cut down on frizz and curls. It will actually give your hair a sheen and shine, but it is not permanent. If you are considering getting a Keratin treatment, here are some facts you may want to know:

1. Will it work for my hair?

Keratin treatments are best for thick, curly, frizzy or coarse hair. Because it actually repairs hair, keratin treatments are also good for damaged or chemically treated hair (colored, permed, relaxed, highlighted or bleached). Keratin treatments are not intended for fine, straight or thin hair.

2. Will it damage my hair?

No. Sealing keratin into cuticles can actually repair and strengthen hair.

3. Will I still be natural?

Yes. You can’t “grow it out” like a relaxer, but instead with regular shampooing, your hair will return to it’s natural state.

4. Can I still color my hair?

If you color your prior to the treatment, the Keratin treatment will actually seal in the color. But, if you are contemplating color after the treatment, then it is best you wait at least 2 weeks

5. Can I do a Keratin Treatment at home?

Yes. However, like most treatments, I would advise you to let a professional do it.

6. How long will it last?

They last for about 6 weeks.

7. Can I still swim with it?

Chlorine or salt water, or excessive sun exposure can shorten the lifespan of the treatment- so keep that in mind if you are getting it in the summer or before a hot exotic trip.

8. Are there any risks?

The straightening agent found in all keratin treatments is formaldehyde, the chemical typically used for preserving bodies and cigarettes.
