My Friends Think I Change My Hairstyle Too Much - Oh Well!

Ever since I was a little girl I was always fascinated with my hair. I had hair all the way down my back, and my mother was extremely protective and cautious about who and what touched my hair, hence the reason I didn’t get a perm till I was in high school, and that was only because it took 10 years to wear her down and get her to give in!

My mother always did my hair, and didn’t like me to play in my hair or touch it, so she got me a mannequin, or two, or three. I loved my mannequins.

I would wash their hair in the sink, comb the hair, braid their hair, and even cut their hair. At one point in time I thought I wanted to be a cosmetologist, because I was so fascinated with hair. Fast forward to my senior year of high school, when I turned 18.

At that point, even though I had won the battle of getting a relaxer in my hair, I was up against another battle- a short hair cut. I had long hair for literally as long as I could remember, and I was simply tired of it. To me it was just hair, and hair will grow back.

So, when I turned 18 my mother decided that technically the battle was over because if she wouldn’t let me do it then I was going to do it when I left for college later that year. So, I made the appointment for a Saturday morning, and and had a bunch of pictures of how I wanted my cut to look. I knew I didn’t want it too short, and my only thing was, as long as I can still put it in a little pony tail, then I will be fine.

I got a bob hair cut, and I loved it! My mom even loved it too. It made me look a little older, and it was just the boost of confidence I needed to finish out my senior year.

Also, it was like the match that lit the fire because from that day on I was always changing up my hair style. In my freshman year of college I started experimenting with sew-ins. I had a friend who lived in my dorm who did hair, and she loved to practice on mine.

halle berryFrom sew-ins I then decided to try cutting again and the next time I went even shorter – Halle Berry short. I loved it at first, but eventually when it got long enough to catch a braid, I got Senegalese twists. Those twists barely lasted two weeks, before I was tired of them and took them out.

After the twists I then started playing with half wigs*. After half wigs* I went back to sew ins religiously for a good 3 years, and didn’t try any other styles. After I graduated college and right before I started my career as a teacher, I cut my hair again, Halle Berry length.

Now, 2 years later I am still changing up my hair, and this time I am all natural. I know that I will stay natural forever, because I have no desire to ever get another relaxer, but I am still changing my styles! I’ve done full sew ins, box braids, crochet twists, crochet havanna twists, my natural hair in a wash and go, and two strand twists. I think  I love the versatility of my hair and I didn’t think there was an issue with it until one of my close friends asked me why do I always change up my hair style?

As if changing my hair style was a bad thing. I’m not going to lie, it did rub me the wrong way, and even made me think that maybe I was doing something wrong by changing up my styles so often. Then, I came to an epiphany, which was confirmed by one of my favorite YouTube bloggers, that there is absolutely nothing with changing up your hair style!

For me, changing my hair is liberating. As cheesy as it may sound, I feel like I can conquer the world when I change up my style! It also stems from the fact that for most of my childhood and teenage years, I didn’t have very much freedom with my hair, and what I could do with it. So, I guess you can say that I’ve been making up for lost time.

I wear weaves* wigs and my natural hair hair, with no shame in my game. I love changing it up, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that! So cheers to all the girls out there who just like to have fun with their looks, and don’t care about what other people think.
