This Simple Trick Helps Moisturize Low Porosity Hair

I have low porosity hair, which has its pros and cons. The con is that it is very difficult for my hair to absorb moisture. The pro is that, once absorbed my hair has the ability to hold onto moisture fairly well. It’s just the moisturizing part that often drives me crazy.

If you have low porosity hair, you’re probably familiar with these symptoms: Conditioner that sits on top of your hair forever, white residue after using moisturizing products, hair that dries very quickly after washing. These are the bane of our low porosity existence.

Usually it is almost impossible to moisturize my hair, which can be very frustrating. Lately however, I have found that by taking more time to adequately massage conditioner into my hair from root to tip, by raking and rubbing my fingers over my hair, my hair has responded by becoming softer and more defined due to absorbing more moisture.

This could be due to the fact that this extended massaging helps the conditioner get into my hair cuticle better, but it could also be the fact that by doing this I’m moving the sebum, the natural oils* produced by glands in the scalp, down the length of my hair shaft.

The sebum is naturally produced to help moisturize the hair but has a harder time traveling down the length of our hair due to the many kinks and coils that are the staples of our hair texture.

Sometimes it takes a couple hours to adequately moisturize my hair with this massage technique and you can tell when you’re done by examining the texture of the hair. If it is silky, soft, and has great slip you’re done.

I went from dry, uncooperative hair to a head full of curls that I sport now; it would seem that all my hair needed was some tender love and care.
