3 Ways To Overcome Styling Frustration During Your Transition

One of the major frustrations most transitioning naturals face is styling. We have been asked many times by women if they can wear some of the same styles they wore prior to their transition.  Our answer is simply, it depends!

If the style you used to wear required a ton of heat or pulling on your roots, we would suggest to avoid those and adopt healthier style options.

Here are 3 tips that can help you determine what styles you can continue to do during your transition.

1. Make a list of all your styles

I listed all my styles during my transition and ticked off all the ones I wanted to keep. I know I have always loved cornrows and I did variable patterns with these during my college days so those were a keeper.

I loved to wear a bun in my hair or put it in a ponytail and, honestly, I would be lost without those so those stayed. I also loved roller sets which as it turns out are amazing for transitioning.

2. Get in the habit of checking humidity  

Knowledge of humidity is very crucial because if you are not informed you will waste your time creating your style only to lose it the moment you step outside.

In my early natural hair journey, I used to do the roller sets even on humid days only to end up with a huge poof once I got outside. I tend to rock curly sets on days with low humidity and buns on the days with extreme humidity.

3. Learn about products

I visited natural hair sites and tried to follow the step by step guides with regards to products to achieve a particular style only to be disappointed because it didn’t work for me.

For instance, I used glycerine* but it left my hair soft, limp and lifeless, I shouldn’t have used this because it is a humectant and I live in a very humid place. Learning about products is a bit of a trial and error process but once you nail down what works for your hair, styling will be much easier.

Armed with this knowledge you can keep things as simple as possible so that you can get through your transition without a hitch.
