My Friend Unwillingly Went Natural, Due To A Salon Mishap

Have you ever heard a scream so loud and so intense, that you thought the person was getting murdered?

If not, then you’re lucky, because I heard my best friend scream like that, and I don’t think I’ll ever be able to hear anyone scream without having flashbacks of that particular afternoon…

It was the summer of our senior year of high school, and in just a few short weeks my best friend and I would be freshmen in college! We both were super excited.

We both came up with the idea that since we were about to be college girls, we should probably go in looking like one and not just lost freshman, so we decided that it was time to try something new with our hair.

We both got relaxers religiously, every 6 weeks. My friend, Dana, wanted to try color, and I wanted to get a cute cut.

The excitement of my haircut was short lived because my mother immediately shut the idea down, and since technically I didn’t turn 18 until my second week of college, I figured I would just wait until I was officially grown AND out of her house to do it.

However, Dana’s mom was way cooler and lenient than my mother and she was actually excited and thought the idea was great. Dana decided that she wanted to go blonde, like Beyonce.

I thought that would look cute with her skin complexion and I was stoked! Dana and I had different hairdressers, mine was a bit more upscale and pricier than hers, but she knew what she was doing.

Dana, on the other hand always got her relaxers and trims done at a local beauty school because they were a lot cheaper than going to an actual salon.

I told Dana that she should go to my stylist because going blonde was a huge change from jet black, and not to mention she needed to get a relaxer too. Dana didn’t listen.

She said she couldn’t afford to spend a ton of money on her hair when she had a lot of things to buy for freshman year, and I couldn’t blame her.

So, she let her cousin bleach her hair for her at home. The color actually turned out pretty good. Then about 1 week later, Dana wanted to get a relaxer, because it was the 6-week mark. I cautioned Dana that it may not be the best idea considering she just bleached her hair the week before, but Dana ignored me.

I went with Dana to the beauty school, where she goes to get her relaxers, and just sat in the reception area waiting for her.

You remember that scream I mentioned at the beginning? Well, 25 minutes later it happened. I immediately ran back to where it was coming from, and couldn’t believe what I saw.

Dana was sitting in front of the shampoo bowl, screaming and crying, while staring at a hand mirror. She no longer had a visible hairline, or really much hair visible at all for that matter. Most of her hair was completely burned off.

She looked like an elderly person, not my best friend who was about to head off to college in a few weeks. There really wasn’t much the stylists could do, especially since they were students, and not to mention since it was a beauty school, they weren’t even held liable for the mishap.

Now, 6 years later, Dana’s hair has completely grown back and is beautiful. She wore a wig* her Freshman year, and from then started rocking a short fro as it gradually grew out more and more.

Dana swore off all chemicals after that mishap, and now she actually says that it was one of the best things that could have happened to her because she probably never would have seen her natural curl pattern.
