9 Ways To Re-Grow Your Edges And Crown After Hairloss

edges 123Recently we have had a ton of questions and concerns from women who have experienced hair damage along their edges and in their crown area.

Most of these women have endured years of using weaves and styles that have pulled and tugged at their most sensitive areas of the scalp.

The edges, crown, and nape often suffer the most hair loss due to tension and bad hair practices, but there are ways you protect, save, and grow out your edges if you are suffering from hair fall.

With that said here are our top 9 ways you can successfully grow out your edges and crown after years of damage.

1. Reduce tension

If you are used to wearing your hair pulled back or wearing super tight protective styles, it is time to let those go so that your edges can breathe a bit. Avoid tight ponytails, tightly braided styles and high tension buns.

The faster you move on from the styles that have caused damage to your hair the better it will be for your scalp rehabilitation.

2. See a dermatologist

This should have been number one because honestly, you want to be very certain that it is bad hair practices that have caused your hair loss.

A Doctor can test your scalp and tell you with no doubt what has caused your hair to fall and if they do determine that it is physical damage you can also find out if there are ways you can get your follicles healthy again.

3. Style your edges using healthy products

Healthy oils like Jamaican Black Castor oil* are great for regrowing your edges and it is a pretty heavy oil so it can also help the hair to lie down if that is what you desire.

Use a tiny bit of castor oil on a toothbrush and gently style your edges then cover with a scarf to train the hair to lie down. This way you have nicely styled edges and the oil will help your edges to grow in.

4. Hot oil treatments

Again using castor oil, do regular hot oil treatments to help your edges and nape to grow in. Additionally, essential oils* like, peppermint oil* or tea tree oil* are great for preventing hair loss and helping your hair to grow.

Make a simple mix using Jamaican Black Castor oil*, and a few drops of peppermint oil* and tea tree oil*, cover your hair with a plastic cap and sit under a hooded dry for 25 minutes before you shampoo. Hot oil treatments like that one can be very beneficial to feeding your hair the good nutrients it needs to grow.

Using the same oil mix I recommended for your hot oil treatment, massage your edges and nape area every couple of days to get your hair growing. Massages stimulate the scalp and they help to jump start your follicles to start pushing those little hairs out.

Regular massages also encourage blood stimulation to your scalp which means oxygen and nutrients will feed your follicles on a regular basis which will encourage growth.

6. Cover your hair at night

You need to use a hair bonnet anyway but if you are suffering from any hair loss you really need to cover your hair at night. Cotton sheets and pillows tend to dry out your hair and while you are trying to grow out your edges and crown you want to maintain as much moisture in your strands as you can.

7. Practice healthy styling

I know I have mentioned this throughout this post, but it does help to tackle it on its own because even the styles that you think are low tension might not be low tension enough.

For example, cornrow styles are on trend this year but even if the hair that is being used to do the braid is your own hair there is a ton of tension that can happen at the beginning of the braid. Loose twists and low tension bun styles are the best options for a growing crown.

8. Isolate the hair along your crown and edges

One neat little trick that I have learned throughout the years is that if you are able to isolate the areas of your hair that need the most help you will see more progress.

How you do this is easy, if you are growing out your edges and crown areas, maintain a flat twist or loose cornrow along those areas.

Obviously, the aesthetic of having a loose twist or braid along your edges might not be the best but if you are creative in styling your hair while maintaining those sensitive areas, it will be a win-win all around.

9. Finally patience

There is a lot that happens in your body that causes growth and it takes a lot of patience on our part to allow the process to happen.

Hair loss does not happen overnight and so we cannot expect that growth will happen overnight either. If you are consistent with what the dermatologist recommends as well as everything that we have suggested things will start to turn around.
