How I Manage Wash Day With Two Daughters

black mom with child
When I had my first daughter I was so excited about doing her hair and I started just after she turned 4 months old.  However, when I had my second child I was happy to have another baby, but I didn’t know how I was going to manage 3 heads.

Having that said, just last week I installed box braids in my girl’s hair, yep that was a big job but I did it. I used this as an opportunity to teach my eldest daughter how to do braids so that she can help me braid her little sister which is pretty much the foundation on how I handle wash day.

After my second child, I had to make management changes in how I maintained their hair as well as my own so here is what I did.

I set different haircare days for each family member

I know some people dedicate the whole day to doing hair but I do not. I want us to be able to do other things which are not hair related on wash day. I have a different wash day for the three of us and even after wash day I do styles on different days for each child which allows us to still go on with our lives.

Different wash days also allows me to focus and bond with each child individually while teaching them how to take care of their own hair. This leads me to my second point.

Educate your kids and involve them in their haircare

I taught my eldest daughter how to care for her hair early and now she can wash her hair, mix her deep conditioner* and apply it.

After she mastered that I taught her to kill two birds with one stone and wash her deep conditioner* out in the shower and bun her hair under running water. Once she completes that we would allow her hair to air dry all day in the bun until it is time for me to style it.

With my youngest daughter, I would apply the shampoo to her hair and ask her to scrub her scalp. She would get the first round and I would take over towards the end giving her an opportunity to learn how to cleanse her scalp. She also sprays oil on her hair and ties a head scarf for her edges to lie down.

Involving my children is not only fun for them, but it inspires them to be independent about their own hair care making wash day easier for all of us.

Do you have more than one daughter, how do you manage wash day?
