White Women Are Using Fire To Get Rid Of Their Split Ends
As women, we are already a bit terrified of the thought of having to cut because of our for fear of losing length, but we will do it for the health of our hair.
With that said, apparently, there is a new trend for getting rid of split ends. Stylists are using fire! It has two terms: “candle cutting” and “velaterapia” and the method is literally using a candle’s flame to “cut” away the dead and split ends.
This method/trend originated from Brazil. Stylists are trained to control the flame in an artistic way to trim away split ends and it said that most stylists that practice this technique perform it on dry, straight hair.
The hair is often sectioned into small sections, because if the sections are too big, all of the split ends won’t come into contact with the fire. When the hair is parted into small sections, each section is twisted and then the stylist runs fire over the pieces sticking out of the twisted section.
The twists ensure that only the damaged hair is removed. Once that is done, the hair is washed and then deep conditioned.
Why fire though?
Well, these stylists say the heat opens up the hair cuticles so nutrients can enter in. The cold rinse after closes the cuticle.
I have many concerns with this method, first, we are taught that too much heat is damaging for our hair, but now candle cutting is supposed to be a healthy alternative? Really? If candle cutting is okay, why isn’t flat ironing praised?
Could it too remove dead ends? What seriously makes candle cutting so special and any different from any other form of heat damage?
These treatments run from $150 to $250 per treatment and is said to actually be an old method that comes from the 1960’s and 1970’s.

While the technique is interesting there are definitely safer and easier ways of getting rid of split ends and I am yet to see it done on curly/kinky* hair. Go figure!
