4 Ways To Pre-Stretch Your Hair For a Twist Out

I don’t know about you but I live for a voluminous twist out. As someone who has fine coily hair, a full fro can be hard to come by. Day 3 or 4 hair is always my favorite because my curls are still defined and I have enough stretch and lift at my roots for fullness.

In the past, day 1 had always been a struggle because while I had so much definition I felt they were lifeless and drawn up.

In experimenting with ways to overcome this, I’ve used 4 different techniques to “pre-stretch” my hair prior to a twist out so as to help with lift and voluminosity. Check them out below!

1. Clipped Roots

Clipping my roots with those metal clips has always been a number one for me when completing a twist out. When completing a twist out on wet hair my hair can help but want to curl back up even within the twists.

By simply adding a metal clip to the base of the twist, I can let the twist set and combat this reverse action which offers me a little more stretch when the style is complete.

2. Crown Twist First

Another tip I’ve followed is to install my two strand twists after I’ve already work a stretching style. Crown twists are excellent for this.

On wash day, I let my hair dry completely and then I will wear my hair in a simple crown twist style for a day or two. I then will use a cream based styler and complete my dry twist out.

3. Stretch Plates

Many naturals are jumping on using plates to stretch their hair without the use of heat. You simply align your hair down the length of the plate and snap it shut. After a period of time within the plates your hair will be in a stretched state and ready for twist install.

4. Banding

Lastly, you could also turn to the banding method to stretch your hair prior to a twist out. By applying tension via the use of bands, your curls will be stretched and after completing your twist out it will be in a more voluminous state.

Do you like to pre-stretch your hair before a twist out? What’s your favorite method?
