Why I Quit My Natural Journey, The first time, After Only Two Months

If I can be totally honest, I decided to go natural because a lot of people around me were doing it. I thought that it was the “cool” thing to do.

I didn’t do any research for myself about different hair types, natural styles, transitioning, or anything. I simply scheduled an appointment with a local stylist, and told her to cut it all off.

By all, I meant all of the relaxed ends. I’ve had a relaxed short pixie cut in the past, so I figured the natural chopped style would be no big deal.

To say I was wrong, would probably be the understatement of the year. The stylist assured me that the initial shock after the big chop, was normal, and to give it a few days and I would start to love it. Well, a few weeks passed and I still barely even liked it.

I thought that all I had to do was wet my hair, and it would automatically turn into popping curls. Wrong. I later learned about curl patterns, and how depending on your curl pattern, certain styles require more effort than others, and the wash and go was one of them. In order to get my short fro into a desired curl pattern, I had to first apply gel, and finger coil it.

This hair discovery all happened during that first month. By the time month two rolled around, I still only half way liked my hair. Yes, the finger coil wash and go style was cute, but I just felt stuck. I’m the type of person who never kept the same hairstyle for more than 3 weeks, so because all I could do to my twa was coil it I was pretty bored and frustrating.

I ended up scheduling another appointment with my stylist, but that time it was for a relaxer. I gave up on the natural journey that second month because my heart wasn’t in it, and I wasn’t satisfied with it. Like my stylist originally said, the big chop is usually a transition for a lot of people, but the only difference for me was that, I wasn’t even doing the big chop for me.

I was doing it because I thought it was cool. Don’t make the same mistake I did that first time. Going natural should not just be a fad. It’s a decision that you have to make for you, and you alone. Also, it wouldn’t hurt to do a little bit of research ahead of time!
