Coming To Terms With Cutting Your Hair - 4 Questions To Ask Yourself

I have been really wrestling with the thought of cutting my hair mostly for aesthetic reasons. I have had long hair for a long time and as I get older and busier I find myself wanting something different and drastic done to my whole look and that includes my hair.

I have been spending a ton of time thinking about it and I even asked my family what they thought, (most of whom think I would never do it) and I came up with 3 questions that I had to answer before taking the plunge.

1. Why is this such a painful decision?

This was my first question because I felt slightly hypocritical, to be honest. I am that girl who will tell you that if you want to do something just do it. Hair grows back, really it isn’t a big deal. Now that I am the one considering the big chop, the decision is a full on production in my mind. Sometimes you have to just jump and see where it leads you!

2. What Am I afraid of?

This one is easy, I am afraid I will look crazy as hell hec. Asking this question does force you to identify the real issues that you do have with cutting or not cutting our hair. For so many of us having long hair is a crutch and it isn’t until you really think about it that you realize how dependent you are on it for your overall look.

Once you let go of that fear, then making the decision is easy, you fully come to terms with the fact that you are more than your hair.

3. Can you maintain it?

Even though caring for short hair takes less time than it would if your hair was longer you still have to maintain the shape especially if you get a short style. The barber shop might become a permanent part of your life and you still have to maintain your scalp in the same manner that you would if your hair was long. – The regimen never goes away.

4. Will I want long hair again?

Maybe! And if I do then I better be prepared to understand and remember the patience that I will need to grow out my hair again and that it takes time.

The difference is, if I were to grow out my hair for the second time I would absolutely take the time to really enjoy the process.

Have you cut your hair drastically recently, how did your decision-making process go?
